I've always been wondering what makes movies look like movies and not like videos. Reasons usually cited are aspect ratio, grading, framerate and sometimes frame interpolation which is indeed responsible for the dreaded soap opera effect but it's only when I learned about anamorphic and saw the results that I understood that this is the real thing. When I see these images, I get such an intense feeling that I cannot really describe like: "I am ready, take me into your world."
Hey NoName DrumGuy. Let's put "cinematic look" aside for a moment. The advantage of using such an adapter, is the ability to NOT throw away sensor/picture information as usually many of us tend to crop the top/bottom of the frame in order to mimic that aspect ratio. Thank you! Johnnie
@@CineD Agreed! I do admit that the added width to the frame does look better in most of these examples. But in the end, the main reason to get such an adapter would be to alter the image to fit a certain aesthetic, not just to save sensor resolution.
Thanks for this nice review! So it’s an aps-c sensor, what is the wider focal length you can get on your taking lens without vignetting ? Theorically, 30 mm is the limit but it seems you get wider in some shots. Thanks in advance
Hi, Great Video! I have a XT-3 with the 18-55mm kit lens and i am not sure if this adapter is suitable for this set up. Can you please help me about this? Thank you!
does the xt30 shoot FLOG? if not how did you get such a flat profile? and the grading on this is amazing. would love to see a tutorial (if you havent already) on grading for this sort of look
Hi Marco Zhang. Used the camera F-Log picture profile (Sharpness turned all the way down), then, used FUJIFILM's original F-log to WDR BT709 (Can be downloaded from here: www.fujifilm.com/support/digital_cameras/software/lut/) and then used a LUT from lutify.me/ and played with it. Thank you! Johnnie
This is a neat portable setup that anyone can get and use! Now, me personally, I don’t like the slr magic adapters. They are so soft and you have to stop your lens down too far just to get a decent picture. There are plenty of vintage anamorphic adapters that are tack sharp all the way up to f1.4, so I have no idea why slr magic are unable to achieve the same results even with modern lens technology.
Very nice video! I also have the SLR Magic Anamorphot 40. I currently am using it with a Kamlan 28mm f1.4 lens in a Sony A7C (in APS-C mode). It is a very good combo, but I would like to have more wide angle XD Which focal length do you recommend to use, to do not have any problem with vignetting??? Greetings from Chile ;)
that is interesting, you still have AF available with that anamorphic adapter on? also, would you say the codec found in the x-t3 fixes the issues you found in the codec within the x-t30?
Could you adapt this anamorphic adapter to cameras with larger filter thread or would it not longer work? For example i would love to use it on my xf 18-55
Hi RatherLargeTortoise. It all depends on the inner lens thread. Hope my previous article can help: www.cinema5d.com/slr-magic-anamorphot-133x-40-adapter-beginners-perspective-and-first-look/ Thank you! Johnnie
glad i got the xt3 & 18-55! but even so, assuming better resources, looks like theres some SERIOUS film potential! Definitely a quality snob so i dig it in spite of the glaring issues. Finally found out the reason no camera footage looks right...anamorphic.
Hi log0log. Can't say which camera is definitely better, BUT, please note that the FUJIFILM X-T30 is definitely cheaper. Together with the lens I used for this video, it can be purchased at B&H for $1000 while the GH5 body only is $1500. Thank you Johnnie
Right? For a while EVERY commercial was suddenly anamorphic. and it was right after I bought the Vid Atlantic filters and then never did anything with them, lol. So if I had started to, it would just be following the trend -_-
Do you really want to know? It has to do with aspect ratios. It's annoying to either use an image file or output blanking on footage. 1.33 with the 1.5 gives us close to a 2.40 cinema aspect that can be desqueezed in post. This gives a look to buildings, people, and lens flares. You can fake anamorphic lens flares with filters, however you don't get the squeeze bonus of anamorphic also not all of the background will look anamorphic. Anamorphic has a look it's why new cinema glass is still coming out in anamorphic. If you just add the black bar ratios in post and your fine with that go for it. Anamorphic adapters are for those who want more but can't buy a cinema camera lens combo
Hi, I think the whole setup shot have been aimed at an evening shoot, why? thats when an anamorphic look comes into it's own, flares, thats the giveaway, lock the shot on a tripod and shoot into lights and traffic and then we can get a feel for what the add on from SLR Magic is all about. just my thoughts, I'm no expert like you guys.
Hi am ge. Thank you for your feedback. Was trying not to go the obvious "flare rout" and come up with "real world" images. Saying that, I understand your request to point the camera at a light source and see the aesthetic outcome. Thank you Johnnie
Hi SOL SHALEM. Using a gimbal with this camera is a bit of defeating its purpose in a way. It is a very small portable filming solution and I wanted to keep it that way. Thank you! Johnnie
cinema5D sure but if your taking video even with an iPhone and your getting paid. Or you want it to look professional then you need a gimbal even if it has the best IBIS. Or a glide cam. Or even a video head and tripod/monopod. I could shoot a wedding with this camera no prob with the above accessories. Xt3 I could shoot a feature film lol. Video quality is excellent on these.
@@AllisonRoadWest Smaller more lightweight bodies result in more micro jitters than if the same person picked up a heavy setup, that's why cinema cameras don't need image stabilization as much as DSLR form factor cameras do

I love this solution. Thank you for a Fuji specific setup.
I think the bit rate and color grading did more for a cinematic look than the anamorphot did.
Seems like to me as well

Can we use this adapter with any fuji lenses?

no, front element has to be max 40mm.
Do you have to record in 16: 9 internally or in DCI? I barely got the camera and I'm learning
