@@KitchenTipsOnline You are most welcome. I had despaired on buying lettuce because I just couldn't keep it green, crisp and fresh for more than a few days, and being the only one eating it, it was impossible for me to use much in such a short time. After cleaning cilantro and parsley in the salad spinner I put paper towel (usually four in a row still connected) and roll the parsley or cilantro in the paper towel and then put it in a ziplock bag. It will last WEEKS this way. Roll a little bit of parsley or cilantro into the towel then add more and roll on. Keep adding and rolling until all the cilantro/parsley is rolled up in paper towel and then into the ziploc. You will be amazed....I was !

Here’s a tip to help all your berries stay fresh longer! When I bring the berries (any & all berries ) home I put them in a bowl covered w/ water and add a splash of white or apple cider vinegar and let sit for ten minutes. Drain and lightly rinse, then let them sit out and air dry for a while. I then put them back into the container they came in or a glass container and put them in the fridge. They will last a good week or two with no mold! 🍇🍓

@@donjulio8807 No, you do not, because I have not had any fibers from the paper towel come off at all. Remember it is there to absorb excess moisture, so the wetness prevents fibers from separating.
I'm going to give this a try as I love salad in the summer. To keep Cilantro bunches from getting black and icky I pull as many of the lower leaves out of the bunch and put the whole bunch in a glass partially filled with water. I store this in the refrigerator with a "keep fresh" bag over the top. It lasts for weeks.
It's been some time since you said you were going to try this. How did it work for you? Do you store your lettuce this way all the time now? Thanks, Mike ☺
Thanks for the tip on cilantro!!! I stopped buying it since it went black & icky so quickly---much faster than parsley. It's hard to believe you can make cilantro last for weeks. I will try it this week.
Thanks for all these fantastic tips! I am originally from Tampa FL but live now in Europe. I have been coring my lettuce and celery and wrapping in aluminum foil, lasts for weeks. Also wrap fresh herbs in a damp paper towel and put in a baggie. Thanks for tips.
i very much enjoyed the explanation you gave on the gas and how lettuce gives off just a little but when stores combine it with other veggies, it goes bad faster. i enjoy the "technicalities". thank you. =)

I bought some Debbie Meyer green bags that I am testing with my veggies & fruit in the crisper drawer, hopefully they will extend the life of what I have.
Here's how I store my lettuce and other veggies and it works great!! After rinsing lettuce I spin it dry and break it into leaves. When I put it in a ziplock bag I add 1/2 of a paper towel to absorb the extra moisture. I do this for all lettuce. For things like peppers that I may have cut up, I also use a 1/2 of a paper towel. I keep an eye on things as I work through my fridge supplies and change the paper towel as it becomes saturated. The build up of extra moisture is what I find makes veggies go bad faster. I have had Romane lettuce stay fresh and crisp for weeks!
My lettuce was starting to turn brown on outter, top leaves, I trimmed it up, lined cookie sheets with parchment between layers of lettuce. Worked perfect. Take one out, chop it up, add to casseroles, soups, whatever. Not one head lost, frozen, and used. Can't thaw it for fresh, but great for filler vegetable in other recipes.
Nice , I haven't had lettuce in ages because one person can't eat it all before going to waste. Now I can store 1/2 this way and pickle the other 1/2 for salads. Pickled : Place lettuce in container with lid , put half water and vinegar in container with garlic and dill , place in fridge for a few days to pickle.
Wow! I love your tips. I was so frustrated by my lettuce turning pink, then brown, before a few days in the refrigerator! I eat salad a lot because I love the crunch. But I have never been able to keep it longer than 2 days before it is just gross. Thank you So much for the solution to not having to buy lettuce every couple of days! I LOVE your channel, and will share with all my friends and family.

I add a paper towel or two to the top and bottom of a fresh salad in a sealed container. I change the paper towels once a day and my salad will stay fresh for a week or more, whatever the ingredients.
How about using the bags they have in the vegetable section for putting apples and stuff in? Could put the lettuce head in there and squeeze the air out?
I freeze portions of homemade stir fry's and bolognese mix in 300g containers when it is frozen I transfer into bags taking up less space. This is good if you are trying to lose weight as you have meals handy and economical for one person
So you wash the lettuce leaves as you use them? I like my lettuce crisp and once rinsed, no matter how many paper towels I use, or spins in the crisper, it’s still limp. Any tips for that? Looking forward to trying the straw trick, thank you!
Yes like I indicated in the video you should only wash the lettuce when you pull off what you need. The only way to keep the letter crispy is to keep it in the crisper drawer in the bottom of your refrigerator. That's the coldest place you can find for lettuce. You might try using Saran wrap instead of the Ziploc bag with a straw. Saran wrap will keep it tighter and it may stay crispier that way. Mike 🧔

Store bottles of onion powder or granules and garlic powder or granules in a ziplock bag in freezer after opening. This keeps them free flowing and not a hardened mass.

I used to suck the air out of the plastic bags. But I don’t think it’s wise with Covid or really any germ transfer. Now I push the air out with my hands leaving one corner for the very last and then get that smashed out too. Thank you very much for validating my pre-Covid method. You’re great.
This tip isn’t about lettuce, but boiled eggs! To get perfectly boiled eggs. Put your eggs in a pan, cover with cold water put on the stove to cook. Bring them to a rolling boil, cover and remove from heat. Let stand 20 min-and your eggs are perfect! Never green, never running-but just right!!

And to make them easy to peel, plunge them into ice water and let sit for a few minutes. Drain, then peel or store in the fridge. When you're ready to peel them, give a slight crack and the shells should just slide off.
Yep you are correct Barbara, Saran Wrap would work great! It's closer to what they do at the grocery store then what I demonstrated in the video. Thanks for your tip and feedback, Mike 🙂
tupperware made a deep bowl for lettyce -when you put your lettuce away run cold water over the head put it in that plastic bowl snap the lid on then burp it-it worked great in my opinion
I do the exact same thing with shredded cabbage, broccoli and cauliflowers, when I've was it and drained it I put it into a zipper bag, I zip the bag and just leave a fringe size open at one end, I then use this little hole to suck the air out and zip it up fully before taking it away from my lips so that no air can seep back in. I've been able to use these vegetables for nearly three weeks using this method.

Great tip! For years I have had a Tupperware bowl for ages that is designed to store and save iceberg lettuce for at least 3 weeks. It’s one of those items that I never want to get rid of, cuz it really works! But, I have only used it for iceberg lettuce. I'm going to recommend a food sealer. I use one to vacuum seal meat for my sous vide. You can stop at any time you are satisfied with how much air it has removed.
Haha, you're welcome. Please come back and tell everyone how it works for you. Remember it's important to leave the core in place and not to was the lettuce before you put it in the fridge. Each time you need some, remove what you need and wash it then. If you use a knife to remove the core, the lettuce thinks it's been injured and start to deteriorate right at that spot. Thanks for your feedback, Mike 🧓
New subscriber here, and I hope you can use one of my true and tried methods of preserving and storing food longer. Moisture is also the enemy of produce. I wrap my lettuce know matter what kind of lettuce in paper towels, and each time I use my lettuce I make sure my paper towel is dry on my lettuce before putting it back into the refrigerator. If you buy container lettuce, line your container with paper towels, even covering the top, and keep it changed with dry paper towels as you use it. If you cut a cucumber in half to use just part of it, wrap a paper towel over the cut end, then place in the refrigerator in container or ziplock bag. For celery I use a tall yogurt container, cut celery to fit below lid, cover 3/4 way with filtered water, set into refrigerator, change water every 5 days, this will keep your celery crispy. For bananas let ripen enough so it's not green tasting, then place in ziploc bag in your refrigerator, the banana peel will start to turn dark, but the banana inside stays fresh, this stops the banana from turning bad over night, I've had mine last 2 weeks in my refrigerator, only the peel turns dark. I also freeze my bananas out of their peels, break in half in sandwich ziploc bags, add a half of frozen banana to fruit smoothies, bananas should be just ripe, not overly ripened when freezing, or they will turn dark. Also place in deep freezer, not recommended for refrigerator/freezers where they can turn dark. Store potatoes, sweet potatoes, and onions in paper bags in cool dark room. The paper bags whisk away moisture and let the vegetables breathe. If you don't have paper bags line a laundry basket that has holes with newspapers. 👍❤💕

Montauk Long Island, thanks for the tip! I am going to check it out, Mike ☺
I leave my lettuce in my salad spinner. It lasts for a long time. And wrapping celery in aluminum foil keeps it fresh and crisp for a long time
Thanks for your feedback and tip. I already did a video on how to store celery using the method you described, Mike 🙂 ruclips.net/video/x7k2iO27R-k/видео.html
Neat kitchen, especially the pots and pans , etc. I like all of that hanging above his head....Pretty cool........thanks for the tips.
Thanks again Jean, 🙂
For pre mixed salads. I put a new paper towel in the bag everyday, keeps it crunchy & lasts about 5-7 days longer than normal.
Okay, thanks for the tip. Mike
@@donjulio8807 No, you do not, because I have not had any fibers from the paper towel come off at all. Remember it is there to absorb excess moisture, so the wetness prevents fibers from separating.
I have also noticed that if I don't put my hands in the bag, only shake out what I want, it lasts longer.
This is awesome! My greens always expire when I least expect it
Thanks for your feedback, Mike 🧔👍
great tip (y) you are the only youtube who reply to all the comments
Thank you very much I appreciate the kind words. Sometimes I miss a comment but I try. I appreciate the feedback, Mike 🧓
Thank you much for your tip and feedback. Mike ☺
Groceries you buy here usually don't last nearly as long like in the states so I am now watching all your interesting suggestions on how to keep things fresh because I dislike having to throw food away. Keep up the good work and thanks again for your great videos!
Eddy Rose, thank you for your feedback and kind work. Mike ☺
I never understood why my folks keep telling me to seal my lettuce in air tight bags, but this bit of information really helped. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the feedback, Mike 🧔
My German Gran would put stale thick bread chunks in with the various lettuce, greens, etc. Works well. Gotta move it around, here n there, mix gently, also, change the bread chunks
It sounds like a pretty good tip that worked for your grandmother but now you know an easier way to accomplish the same thing. Thanks for your feedback, Mike 🧓
I have been coring my lettuce and celery and wrapping in aluminum foil, lasts for weeks. Also wrap fresh herbs in a damp paper towel and put in a baggie. Thanks for tips.
Thanks for your feedback, Mike 🙂
i very much enjoyed the explanation you gave on the gas and how lettuce gives off just a little but when stores combine it with other veggies, it goes bad faster. i enjoy the "technicalities". thank you. =)
Thank you very much for the kind words. Since you enjoy learning you might want to check out my video on how to stop freezer burn and what freezer burn really is. Here is the link, Mike ruclips.net/video/XNIR1BlLXFM/видео.html
I bought some Debbie Meyer green bags that I am testing with my veggies & fruit in the crisper drawer, hopefully they will extend the life of what I have.
Mary, I have never used Debbie Meyers green bags but I am familiar with them. Please come back and let everyone know how they work out for you, Mike 🙂
Thanks for your suggestion although it seems like extra work compared to what was demonstrated in the video, Mike 🙂
I was wondering if there was a way to keep lettuce a little longer. I came across this video. Thank you so much!
Glad I could help! Mike 🧔
I LOVE that kitchen
Thanks for noticing! I rebuilt the kitchen myself. Mike 🧔
brilliant...will use it for other veggies also . thanks
Thanks I appreciate the feedback, Mike 🧔
My lettuce was starting to turn brown on outter, top leaves, I trimmed it up, lined cookie sheets with parchment between layers of lettuce. Worked perfect. Take one out, chop it up, add to casseroles, soups, whatever. Not one head lost, frozen, and used. Can't thaw it for fresh, but great for filler vegetable in other recipes.
Using a unused straw left over from fast food orders, works even better. Been using this little trick for over 50 years now. It works great 👍
You are on the ball🧔
Nice , I haven't had lettuce in ages because one person can't eat it all before going to waste. Now I can store 1/2 this way and pickle the other 1/2 for salads. Pickled : Place lettuce in container with lid , put half water and vinegar in container with garlic and dill , place in fridge for a few days to pickle.
Thanks Carolyn, I have never had pickled lettuce. I'm going to have to check it out. I appreciate the feedback, Mike 🙂
Kim, thanks for the kind words and welcome aboard. I appreciate you sharing my Channel with your friends and family, every little bit helps, Mike 🙂

I add a paper towel or two to the top and bottom of a fresh salad in a sealed container. I change the paper towels once a day and my salad will stay fresh for a week or more, whatever the ingredients.
Steve Meserve, That's a great tip, thanks for your feedback. Mike ☺
Yes, I do this too! It works!
That's what I do. I also dry the paper towels (hang on a rail) for reuse. Less waste of everything.
How about using the bags they have in the vegetable section for putting apples and stuff in? Could put the lettuce head in there and squeeze the air out?
I honestly don't know the answer to that I have never tried it. I suppose it wouldn't work, Mike
I love your kitchen!

I freeze portions of homemade stir fry's and bolognese mix in 300g containers when it is frozen I transfer into bags taking up less space. This is good if you are trying to lose weight as you have meals handy and economical for one person
That's a great tip thank you very much for taking the time to share. I appreciate it, Mike 🧔
Mike 🧔
@ thank you! Sorry, I evidently missed that. I do keep it in the crisper drawer but will try Saran Wrap. 😊
No wonder my lettuce and celery weren't lasting long, I never sealed them up omg, glad this video was in my news feed👍

Store bottles of onion powder or granules and garlic powder or granules in a ziplock bag in freezer after opening. This keeps them free flowing and not a hardened mass.

Sharon, you can also add a few grains of rice in the shaker. Helps absorb moisture.
I never knew that about the ethanol gas! Excellent report!
Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback, I appreciate it, Mike 🙂
That's ethylene gas.
I used to suck the air out of the plastic bags. But I don’t think it’s wise with Covid or really any germ transfer. Now I push the air out with my hands leaving one corner for the very last and then get that smashed out too.
Thank you very much for validating my pre-Covid method. You’re great.
Joan, you're welcome 😃 Thanks for the feedback, Mike 🧔

Yep you sure can. Mike 🧔

Diane Thompson, that is an excellent tip, thank you very much for your feedback. Hey everyone, let's give Diane a thumbs up for her tip, thanks, Mike ☺
And to make them easy to peel, plunge them into ice water and let sit for a few minutes. Drain, then peel or store in the fridge. When you're ready to peel them, give a slight crack and the shells should just slide off.
Just bring to boil and leave on burner for 8 to 9 mins, always turn out nice and yellow, no green, Ive used up to six eggs
I wrap my lettuce tightly in Saran Wrap. It really works.
Yep you are correct Barbara, Saran Wrap would work great! It's closer to what they do at the grocery store then what I demonstrated in the video. Thanks for your tip and feedback, Mike 🙂
Very good information😀

tupperware made a deep bowl for lettyce -when you put your lettuce away run cold water over the head put it in that plastic bowl snap the lid on then burp it-it worked great in my opinion
I imagine that the chlorine in the water would eventually affect the flavor of the lettuce. Mike🧔

Wouldn't wrapping in saran wrap work even better and can reduce more air between the lettuce and the plastic wrap?
Yes you're absolutely right it definitely works. Thanks for the tip, Mike

Wholesome content right there. Like

Excellent tip, thanks for the feedback, Mike 🧓
Tried your banana chips and tried your potato chips and both work. So far that's all I have done and I plan to read more of your tips as soon as possible. By the way I am in Columbus Ohio. thank you
Dottie, you said banana “chips” and potato “chips”, I assume you meant banana tips and potato storage tip. And for that I thank you for your feedback. I miss Columbus, and travel back there as often as possible to visit friends. Mike
my sister taught me to wrap it in damp paper towel. and put in a bad the wet helps keep the lettuce crisp. and it does. however it can last a week in the fridge. what do you think..and im going to try your method and compair.
You have to keep the lettuce dry if you want it to stay fresh 5 weeks or more. In fact, in the video, I suggested that you not wash or core the lettuce before you store it, Mike 🙂

It's been awhile since you left your original comment. Have you tried storing lettuce in the refrigerator the way I suggested it in the video? And if you did, what were the results? Thanks in advance for your feedback, Mike ☺
Great tip! For years I have had a Tupperware bowl for ages that is designed to store and save iceberg lettuce for at least 3 weeks. It’s one of those items that I never want to get rid of, cuz it really works! But, I have only used it for iceberg lettuce. Will your tip with the ziplock bag work for the pre-mixed, store bought salads?
Homemade blue cheese dressing would be great too....
I add a paper towel to zip bag. It seems to help it stay crisp longer.
Thanks for the tip! Mike 👍
Cool, thanks for the info. I had no idea about the ethylene gas - I thought it was just plain oxygen that was doing it and we really had little control over it. You've earned a subscriber!

I'm going to recommend a food sealer. I use one to vacuum seal meat for my sous vide. You can stop at any time you are satisfied with how much air it has removed.
Khristine, that will definitely work but you have to vacuum seal it again every time. Mike 🧔

Thanks for the lettuce tips! I'll try them out as soon as I buy some fresh. What I have in the frig is about ready to walk away. :(
Haha, you're welcome.
@@KitchenTipsOnline thank you for your tips x

Diana Nguyen, you are very welcome, thank you for your feedback, Mike ☺
