Jaguar XJ8 (X308) limp mode & error messages | Ft iCarsoft LR V2.0 diagnostic tool

  • News on the 2002 Jaguar XJ8 (X308 series), and not all of it is good. On a couple of drives out, error messages popped up on the dash and the car went into limp-home mode. There are several possible causes of this, and in this video I begin to look into what the problem(s) might be.
Cars of this age (and newer), not just Jaguars, are very dependent on electronics, and everything - including battery, earths and various sensors - have to be 100% to keep all the computers and various modules around the car happy.
To help diagnose any problems and enable me to monitor various systems on the car "live", ie with the engine running, I bought an iCarsoft LR V2.0 diagnostic tool and in this video, I show some of its functionality. I've no links with the supplier or manufacturer of this gadget, I'm just showing what I bought to iron out niggles with the old Jaguar XJ8. After having sat for several years, I am not surprised that there are a few gremlins in the works.
If you own or are a fan of the X300 and X308 series of Jaguar saloons, please pop a note into the comments. There will be future updates on this work as time progresses and areas needing attention are identified.

Had all the same problems with my 2 year old F Pace !! Failed battery created a Christmas tree effect of warning lights Stability control system, gearbox you name it I had the warning light on for it. Then shortly after that with new battery fitted same again. This time it was a wheel speed sensor that kicked off the light show on the dash. It’s now 6 years old and has required a DPF sensor and a glow plug so all in all not too bad. It’s still one of the nicest cars I’ve owned and the longer I have it the more I like it. I’m quite taken with your dads X350 as I worked on the design of the body shop to build the all aluminium glued and riveted body structure for that car. It was a money no object (Ford were paying) project for Jaguar.

Had an ABS traction control and gearbox limp mode problem for years on 2006 s type.. Revs limited to 2000 odd etc, then issue goes away for maybe a year. Dealer could not sort it had sensors changed and reluctor wheels cleaned etc; no change. Problem now solved. Rod switch for brake pedal travel monitoring on the servo was intermittently faulty. Changed out and located new servo just in case. Perfect. Hero Jaguar employee who has original factory test stuff did a free diagnostic for me. Could find no other issues on the car and concurred that keeping the battery on charge was very important. He could tell immediately by what codes flagged up or went away and pinpointed the issue. Begs the question as to why the main dealership could do no more than throw parts at it and empty my wallet. They are now defunct by the way! Hope you issues are permanently cleared up and you can enjoy what is a very nice vehicle.

There's a lot to be said for older cars that are not over computer/electronically controlled - just like a proper 6 cylinder XK , and as with all cars to USE them as gremlins enjoy lack of it! Lol! Good work! And Harley keep up the A40 work instead of camera hogging - Double Lol Rob

I noticed the extension lead was not fully unwound, that is a major cause of fire. Most will say there was so little draw on the extension lead, that is true , but what happens if there is a fault on the charger or battery it may catch fire. Best to put the extension lead unwound outside the car and the charger as well if possible

I did say when you got the car that I would have expected the garage to have cleared the errors when fitting a new battery. Maybe they did but I think you are right about the amount of 'charge' that was in the battery, not fully charged. You also said that a new alternator was fitted so all of this adds up. I think you have done the right thing in changing the ABS sensors as they looked past their 'sell by date'. The diagnostics tool looks to be a good bit of kit and is essential on more 'modern' cars, just saves a lot of head scratching! As you say using the car is the most important thing now to 'blow away ' the cobwebs. I don't know if this problem occurs on these models but it's worth keeping an 'eye on' and that is water ingress into the boot on the offside near the battery. There is a module for the central locking located there and they can be 'toast' if they get wet. Yours looks very dry so you should be fine but I think you did mention something about central locking so I just thought i would mention it. (The cure is to reseal the seam that runs from the rear windscreen to the inside of the boot). Thanks for an interesting video Rick and god luck with the big cat. 👍👍

Curiously yes I thought it had a new alternator but when I peered under the bonnet (it's not easy to see) it still has what looks to be a very old alternator on it. Strange. Anyway, more on the Jaguar soon, it's not done with oddball gremlins just yet!

Hi Rick I have a S type Jaguar and when I first purchased the car , my local specialist strongly recommended that I do not disconnect the battery as it could promote dashboard warnings. Well diagnosed sir. I had a problem with my Alfa 166 a few years ago were the temperature gauge would rise well above 90 degrees all the time time but the fan wouldn't cut in. Of course I was afraid to overheat the engine so I started by changing the thermostat thinking that it was stuck, then the fan relays and temp sensor having checked the fan motor was fine. It turned out to be the engine earth to the body which had started to corrode, cleaned it up and never had a problem after. It's always worth checking all earth points on any older car. Having worked as an electrical engineer on the railways I've come across this often, there always needs to be a good "current" return or things start playing up.

Your Jaguar is a beautiful car but like all cars, it needs to be used. As you said, while it was being used, it did a very small milage. It then sat outside for a long period not being used at all. I think it has stood up to this very well all things considered. I think with the way you look after your vehicles, this Jag will give you many happy years of motoring. Thanks for the video.

I had similar issues with my S Class and in my case it was down to the batteries of which it has 3. It has a main battery, a dedicated auxiliary for starting only and another one to run some systems and if they are not fully charged they can cause all sorts of issues. I had to replaced the main and one of the aux ones. These cars must be used regularly. I have an ABS sensor issue at the moment when I apply the electronic handbrake which I rarely do and the error message disappears when I drive off. It will be replaced next time I have the brake pads renewed. I have had to replace an ABS sensor on the SLK which failed and actually stopped me lowering or raising the roof, replace one ABS sensor and the problem was instantly solved. To have a diagnostic unit plugged in at a Mercedes garage here costs £170 just to run the diagnostics. I don't pay that of course at my trust independent is used all the time.

You should always get a wire brush on your drill and clean the hole where the wheel sensor goes,,There always full of rust and dirt,,And will very quickly destroy the new sensor,,After cleaning with wire brush ,,Give a good spray of brake cleaner into the hole,,Then put a small blob about pea size of grease in the hole before putting in new sensor,,

FYI, In case you are unaware, putting grease on a battery terminal is to seal the lead terminal and the plastic together as fumes from the battery escape at that joint and cause the corrosion you see.
Also having owned MANY Jaguars, if the alternator is suspect you will get all sorts of electrical problems.

As you said, it had been standing for a couple of years - not a good idea. I bought a SAAB 900 which had been sat at a Garage for 2 years. All was well until I went on a motorway, and it started leaking gearbox fluid. Gearbox seals had dried out while stood idle, but some sort of special gearbox fluid revitalised them - phew ! @@kennybarclay4921 Agreed, but I hope this doesn’t dishearten the presenter - the basics of a popular car video are present, it just needs polishing in one or two areas - I’d suggest a) editing, if compiling video shot over a period of time as it may be easy to forget what you’ve already covered and b) considering not exactly scripting, as that can lead to wooden presentation styles, but at least having in mind what you want any particular segment to convey.
