Agreed. When I was a student I had a Rover 420Di which had been 'fettled'. Not quite in the same league, but when all my mates had Clio's and Fiestas, it certainly felt like it with its cream leather and walnut dash...
I must say.. Tom comes across really well. Have just watched him over on Harrys Garage. Very impressive knowledge and appears approachable and friendly. Would happily watch a channel of his own.
Hi Alex, I didn't see any suggestion in the video as to whether you changed the air cleaner assembly. This is a significant restriction on air flow and hence power of the supercharged AJ16 engine. I strongly recommend that you fit an aftermarket air filter but also ensure that it is supplied with cold air, not hot air off the cooling pack. Another useful modification is to fit an uprated Bosch intercooler water pump, which will improve the intercooler performance. I hope you are pleased with the driveability from the reprogrammed engine ECU that I provided for this project. I strongly recommend that you run the car on 99RON fuel if you want to get the most from the remapped ignition timing. Good luck with your forthcoming DRIVETRIBE showdown.
My BantöRgraph has blown up trying to measure the levels of top Bantz between you both. They say you can’t become a RUclipsr anymore because all the good ideas are done already, but this just proves if you get two legends in a room together with their passion, the entertainment is endless!
I watched Tom in the Harry’s Garage video and his jag at the beginning of this week, and he seemed “quite” 😉 serious in that, but he’s a different person in this video with Alex 😂😂. Another great onscreen partnership. Brilliant 👍👍
Those engines can make big power. The restriction is the gen3 m90 supercharger. They are not very efficient at the top end so all the gains you can make are low-mid range. For more power you can port/polish them and coat the rotors like I’ve done which basically makes it a Gen5 and more efficient, I have 355bhp in mine I could get more with a bigger intercooler and twin pumps. Or fit an Eaton m112 kit for 400bhp or on the extreme end fit a TVS1800 and get 500bhp. Gets very expensive though unless you stick with the M90. The power and torque delivery from a well sorted M90 is more than enough IMO, the torque curve is crazy.
IMO, the Jag 4.0, the 2jZ and the VR6 are about tied for the coolest sounding 6 cyl engines. they each have a strange and interesting rhythm that makes them better and different than the rest. ive never heard a V6 that sounded as good as those three. (and if anyone tries to jump in on the V in VR6, you dont understand why they sound like they do. yes, its a 10-15 degree V but the sounds is because it's still a single head with something else that gives it the "wookie" sound. and yes i know what it is and why it does it.)
We had a manual 4.2 fitted with an SDi 3.5 Rover gearbox back in the 80s as a Police Patrol Vehicle on the M23. It spent most of it's time in workshops having the Diff replaced. Good luck with your conversion.
Drove a manual XJR back in the day for travelling from work to visit Jaguar to test their paint process, was mental as a 21 yr old to be driving one 👍🏻
This is exactly why I manual swapped my V8 Discovery! Everyone always asks me why. You just need to drive it to see, it is on a whole other level to an auto! Great work! Tom seems like a top bloke that knows his stuff! Will have to pay him a visit soon!
I’d rebuild the supercharger and put some new wiper seals in it…. Bet that would help for sure. If you’re not increasing on the top end, you have a air leak (air gap in compressor) and/or valve seat issues. If you got the balls… cam swap.
I think it's more a breathing issue, because the midrange has good gains, so the supercharger is doing it's job. A cam and some headers would really help.
@@dabigbadwolf5081 Yep agreed but also the supercharger is just overworked. A twin-screw or turbo conversion would really take this car to the next level, the engine and drivetrain can take it.
Factoring in less drivetrain loss, the top end power from the engine has now reduced which with the bigger pulley is most likely the supercharger producing more heat. Might be worth swapping it or getting it ported.
I'm working on the early XJ6 I recently acquired. Manual conversion of any XJ here in the USA is a whole different deal, as no 5-speed/manual XJ was ever brought here by the factory. I discovered a local (60 mi. away) tuning firm that makes a kit to adapt a Nissan 5-speed gearbox/flywheel as well as a third-pedal kit for the stock auto pedal box. Already found the gearbox for cheap, saving my sheckels for the rest which is about 4 times as much, plus the cost of them making me a custom driveshaft (sorry, propshaft).
I've had an XJR Manual, bought from a car auction, I didn't even know it was manual till I picked it up. I sold to a guy who moved to Australia and he still has it till this day.
Just made my day dude! Was hoping to manual swap my X300 but, sadly, it got vandalized rather badly where I had it stored so not likely I will get to enjoy one. Stick some good suspension in it and you'll have a British Chaser on your hands. It's a really potent chasis if you look at the basics. This is coming from a pro drift driver.
Tom, 34 years !!! you're still an apprentice 😂... I've been in my job 46 years and still enjoy it...fell into it,didn't want to do it, but was offered a job before I left school, so thought I'll do that till find what I want to do... been lucky, crap money but you can't have everything
Awesome video, I've always looked at these and wondered what a manual one would be like! I think they'd definitely be a much more expensive and sort after car these days if they did have more manuals available
It could be a lack of fuel thats holding it back - with a bigger lower pulley, the MAF tops out before the supercharger does, so it leans out at the top of the rev range. you would think it would have a bit more power though, so there might be something else causing the lack of top end.
Torque and mid-range power is what makes a car fun to drive on the street. My daily in the USA is a 1996 Buick Roadmaster wagon with the de-tuned version of the LT1 V8. It only makes 260 horsepower, but puts out 330 ft/lbs of torque. It's wonderful to drive around and it absolutely freight-trains highway on-ramps.
Please do a breakdown of costs once it's back to a street level of drivetrain, I'm always curious to know how much manual conversions cost because automatics are so plentiful.
I'm confused. Was the original power run done with the pulley and tune already in place? It kind of makes sense that the peak power didn't change because once the torque converter is locked its just an efficiency difference and thats not going to be much between gearboxes of the same age designed for similar powertrains. The big gain is while the converter is slipping and burning power on the original vs it being locked in a ratio all the time in the manual. That and the extra control is going to make it a very different (better) drive.

Tom is such a wealth of knowledge
I miss Jack and Ethan.
Agree
I know way more..
Yes the 'knowledge' that the auto box uses loads of power was invaluable 😂
@@rossjuniper3610 it does, as they proved in the video
Tom's a character. should have his own channel
Definitely ! He's so natural on camera and very fun too
Better as a guest
100%. Came here to say this.

Got to love a rapid old man barge. Even better with a manual box.
Agreed. When I was a student I had a Rover 420Di which had been 'fettled'. Not quite in the same league, but when all my mates had Clio's and Fiestas, it certainly felt like it with its cream leather and walnut dash...
What a legend Tom is. Really enjoyed this episode Alex 👌🏻
The devastation on Alex’s face when he seen no bhp gains. Priceless.
No peak BHP gains you mean, still greater area under the curve and thus more HP at every RPM besides max
We didn’t see a dyno graph though, I’m skeptical they even saw that
@@samwell9540 17:43 what am I looking at then?
By far the best workshop chemistry you've shown us so far, pls work more with them
I've just watched tom on Harry's garage and his wealth of knowledge was outstanding. And seems to be a good bloke.
Hopefully Tom can get Harry to come along to the jag show down 👍
I must say.. Tom comes across really well. Have just watched him over on Harrys Garage.
Very impressive knowledge and appears approachable and friendly. Would happily watch a channel of his own.
Thought he was familiar 🙂
Tom's a natural on camera. I'd watch if they had a YT channel

Definately the best super unleaded wouldn’t hurt!
It's amazing to see how much Tom has gotten involved in the channel since. Absolute legend

Tom is an absolute natural on camera, and a wealth of know-how for Jag owners. Hope to see more of him on your channel
Really love the banter with Tom, would love to see him back on the channel in the future, great content as always Alex
I did not expect a sudden Nicholson McLaren cameo. They’re a renowned aviation engine builder.
You and Tom bounced off eachother, effortless together! Feature him more on the channel what a guy he was!

Taylor and Rory. The dream team.
Tom is perfect for this channel- more Jag stuff please!
Top Bloke Alex!
Awesome vid Alex, cant wait to see the race. Nice to see people doing some amazing stuff with Jags as well.
Did you look into the Andy Bracket? You get about 10-15% more power with it, first hand info, totally changed the response and power of my AJ16.
Is that the only way to do it these days?

Great video & exhaust note! Good to see Jaguar getting some love. Thanks all! 🙏🙏
torque curve is more important than 10 extra horsepower in the top end anyway
Agreed, power where you can use it, not nudging the rev limiter.
This.
People always chasing bhp but torque is way more exciting real world

fantastic video. Love the banter you had with Tom
Really enjoy seeing the parts I shipped out being used on the jag 😊
Great bit of chemistry there in everyway possible love it.
If there are no power gains there is something wrong. You should talk to andy stodart and use his crankshaft sensor mount (Andy Bracket) and ECU tune.
That ATB will also give him a decent advantage around the corners balancing out power to the wheel with the most grip.

This is awesome and that Quaife diff sounds like a really amazing bit of kit
That Jag looks better every time I see it. Such a cool barge. The want is strong…
Love this, Tom should totally have his own channel.
Watching that chap reminisce about his first experience with a manual XJR and grabbing with his left hand, messed with my head!
Awesome content as always 👍🏻 Be nice to see the dyno sheets before and after to show the power gain across the rev range.
Loving the bants in that garage. If I had a Jag or Land Rover would be taking it to this place.
Simply fantastic shop and Jags. Greetings from the US.
