“2004 rich” is my absolute favorite era of Euro luxury. I had a 2006 750Li for several years and loved it. It was a hell of an endeavor to bring it back from all the neglect and deferred service, but man, what a car. Keep this stuff coming!
Hit the lock button twice to fold the mirrors in. It should have auto leveling headlights as well, should cycle when you turn the key on. I've had my 2004 XJR for 11 years now and its been an awesome car.
Hey JR! Landon here, so I’m familiar with this car because a classmate of mines dad had this car and listed for sale because it was having issues so glad your saving it!
Cannot believe it, gone through all the comments, and only found 1 whinge BAG.I love Jags, had my first in 72, l am now 82, and still driving an XJ6. In all l'v had 7. Makes a refreshing change to read so many Americans liking the Jags. Keep Safe 🙌 Love to America
Thw auto fold only works if you hit the lock button twice quickly... it's a feature too save the motors from over use... I have a 2006 VDP... LOVE this car! you made a great buy.
I have a 2006 VDP in the same spec with the rear entertainment too. Mine being an 07 it’s the LWB. Love it, true elegance. You have to double click the fob for auto fold.
Double tap the lock button on the remote. This deadlocks the car and makes the mirrors fold in when that feature is activated. I have an XJR, same year as this. Great cars.
The usually problem is not a bad transmission, it's needs service and most likely low on fluid. New pan, filter sleeve, and fluid will solve the problem.
For the power folding mirrors you may need to disassemble them and lubricate the gears inside. Overtime the grease inside tends to dry up and that often attributes to them not operating properly.
The j shifter keeps you from shifting into reverse when you're manual is shifting the car on the highway. I did this with my 1984 XJ Vanden Plas on Motorway in England. Actually turned the motor over backward and the oil pressure gauge went to negative. Unfortunately the oil pressure gauge never worked again after that. Fortunately I didn't hurt the engine and drove it for years after. that is the purpose of the j shifter.
Absolutely love the idea of ditching the old junk cars and getting old-school luxury vehicles! I also appreciate having a video to watch every day!!! Keep up the great work
My grandfather had an 87 Vanden Plas. He drove it every day to metropolitan VA from southern MD for years. I learned how to drive in that car. It was the epitome of cool to me as a kid. I actually cried a little when he sold it… even though it was horribly broken at the time. I would have loved to have that car and learned how to fix it. One day, I will have a car like this… and every time I drive it, I’ll think of my “Pop.”
Greatest iteration of the AJ V8 which basically spanned this entire generation of XJ, which doesn’t eat timing chains. Just wish they had done more with the wheels… the Super V8 5 spokes (basically the Vanden Plas plus S/C) are gorgeous
Hey John Ross my grandfather back in 2007 purchased a 2006 Jaguar XJ8 Sovereign gold with a beige leather interior. It was his daily driver up until 2014 because the air suspension broke so you might wanna take a look at that on this one to see if it’s good or not. That’s a common failure on these X350s
This is 2nd in line to the Super V8. Super V8 has all the options of the Vanden Plan + the supercharger from the XJR. Looks it has everything expect the phone and adaptive cruise control. They're excellent cars. $1100 is great for only needing a new trans.
If it doesn’t have Bluetooth (phone only) fitted you can add it under the console. I added it to my 2004 VDP and it worked perfectly. Check the manual to see about pairing first. Nice Jaaag.
I had the same exact car except mine was a gorgeous Portofino blue with a tan interior. The coolant overflow tanks fail all the time and they’re prone to vacuum leaks, so et your smoke tester ready! A truly magnificent car. The higher gear shift circuits go bad and a little research will tell you that the transmission is a ZF model used in numerous vehicles. Mercedes will charge you $15K, Jaguar will charge you $8500. I forget which regular car has the same unit but you can find out easily.
The rear center console is really cool. You can never have too many buttons and lights. The green display color on the head unit and rear console controls definitely reminds me of the old Alpine, back when Alpine was really good. I started using Alpine in probably the late 70's, early 80's. They made some incredible equipment back in the day. I've still got a early head units in the original boxes that I sent to Alpine and had them serviced so they would be ready to go if I decide to use them...
And don't forget about another cool feature in your Jaguar.. the pedals (the break and acceleration pedals) are adjustable, you can adjust them from the same button which adjust the steering wheel. Good luck with your project.
Mother in law has had 2 XJ's and I marveled at how such a giant car could have such a tight interior. I'm 6'3" and had to hold my head to the side while driving.
Hopefully the 4.2 already has the updated timing set, that was right about the changeover time. The first few years of that transmission tended to suffer early failure between solenoid failure or the bushings that would wear crazy fast. I'm just glad they got it figured out before my 2011 was built because I really don't want to fix it if mine goes bad.
The 6cd changer is Alpine in every Jaguar. I like how people used to look down jaguar cars as outdated meanwhile they hold thoes technologies what you did not find in other luxury brands cars like touch screen navigation from 2002, electric park break.
That is probably J004 which was a recall for a range of 2004 and 2005 MY cars (G00584 - G49700) to update the Engine Control Module and in some cases the Transmission Control Module as well:
19:02 When the car is unlocked you have to press the lock button twice and it will make the mirrors fold automatically as long as you have that setting selected in the system
Yeah I posted early and now it's clear what the plan is. Good thing about parting cars is you might just have the parts for one that's worth fixing to sell yourself or keep because it is awesome and dirt cheap. I used to specialize in older Mopar A bodies so I always have spare misc parts for them. I just have the Dart now, but my driver is a 06 Charger RT with 96k now, much faster than the Dart was.
In high-school (South East) my best friend for years was Clay Barton. (Yes, his dad is the Frank Barton School of Business at WSU.) One day Clay showed up at my house having borrowed his dad's V12 Jaguar and we took a joyride. It was not fast but so smooth and quiet (327 V12 I think.) From then on I have loved and owned three used ones and want another today. P.S- Its not a U-shifter, its a J-gate for Jaguar.
‘04 was the first year of the new all aluminum chassis, but was also the only year the Vanden Plas was on the standard wheelbase car. All other years were long wheelbase cars with tons of rear seat legroom. It also lost the folding tray tables for this year only. To me those made the car. Some little known facts about your car though are the light wood inlay strips in the burl panels is Rosewood and exclusive to the VDP. Regular XJS didn’t have that. The Jaguar lettering in the dash is real gold inlay also. If the walnut panels are the originals, they are booked making the right and left door panels mirrored to each other. The dashboard panels are booked to each other as well. My only disappointment with this generation of XJ is that the fuel fill location was moved to side from the deck top where it should be, and the bonnet opens from the wrong direction. Great car my friend at an unbelievable price.
The turn signal lamps should flash with the remote loxk/unlock function. The ZF 5-speed auto had its share of issues. The 6-speed was a vast improvement and extremely reliable.
The combination of power folding mirrors and the rear sunshade is perfect for people behind you with bright lights. Sunshade up, mirrors in, essentially immune.
4.2 Engine was a great engine. Next 5.0 was good as well. My dad was a Jaguar man. He had 2 coupes. Last one he had was a XKR in green with fawn interior.
These are such awesome and beautiful cars. I know ford still had some partnership with jag. So i see a few ford parts still such as the coolant tank and power steering reservoir. I believe some of the engine parts were the same as well. Good score JR !
the YSB for the jag J004 is non compliance issues relating to on board diagnostic (obd) system function covering thermostat diagnostic, calibration verification, in use monitor performance ratio, and an emission issue relating to open loop smoothing
Windows auto up can be reset by holding the up button for an extra few seconds once window is up, has to be done on each window. Door lock button won’t work if any doors are open.
That's a very cool car not long ago I went to buy a XJ Sovereign it had all the same options as this one unfortunately it was too rough so had to walk away. Those blanks were for the cooled seats btw and the one I saw which was an 05 even had Bluetooth for calling
Vanden "Pla", the s is silent. I'm looking for a good one, a lot of car for the money. Those extra buttons for the seats were for cars that had seat cooling, those cars had perforated cushions.

The u shifter ?? That's the J gate ! Looks great JR, thanks for the video !
For 1100 dollars you could just park it and sit in the back seat watching DVDs! Amazing, what a result, what a car.
Three days ago: We aren't buying cheap cars anymore
Today: Let me show you this $1100 Jag
....all about the views
'junk' cars, he said. diferent kind of cheap ;)
I have no idea what the direction of this channel is now.
He's no longer buying cars he has no interest in just to flip

In my Jeremy Clarkson voice "That's a proper JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG."
I had a 2004 XJ8 in 2010. It lowered itself 10mm once you hit like 60mph. Great car man.
My xj8 had a transmission fault too - took it to Jag if Wichita and they added 1pt of fluid and upgraded the software. Never had another issue.

Hey JR, you should do a complete Fleet update during this transition period , to see what’s staying and what’s going.
Thanks!!

JR, I love your content. But the way you pronounce Avatar is physically painful to listen to.

Good find, JR.❤. Those XJs are so comfortable. I have an XK8 in our fleet, but want an XJ for the extra seats and a little more comfort.
I had a 2004 XJ6 in the UK. Soooo relaxing, quick enough, decent economy. Great car

I had a 1998 Jaguar XJ8L, British racing green, loved it.
