    All these Filipinos from the Philippines are mad that these guys are reviving our traditions as if they did as much/more research than the guys who are actually doing what our ancestors did. Stay mad, we all have the same Filipino blood but how dare you try to take these guys down for celebrating our ancestors through traditions even from across the seas

      Joy A That’s all well and good, but the issues is how are they giving back to the communities that they claim to belong through lineage to receive these tataus? Is it truly revival to take headhunting tattoos that one had to earn by taking heads and kill another human to be able to deserve these markings? If it was true conservation and revival they would get tataus that wasn’t head hunting related. Just because you are of Ilocano decent doesn’t give you the right to wear Kalinga markings. Do they give back to these communities? No. So how are they honoring their ancestors? What work do they do for the culture besides putting these markings on fellow Fil-Americans for money? If it was truly traditional the majority of these people wouldn’t even have these tattoos, as they had to be paramount warriors, chiefs etc.

      @@kilipaki87oritahiti "what do they give back to their communities" Balikbayan box. You didn't get one so you are mad? Maybe you should learn about the manong generation who fought racism, bigotry and adversity. Fighting😢 takes many forms. It changes over years others went into service to be part of the US navy's filipino mafia. Do understand how these communities here make sure their children embrace their culture in a land 5,000 miles from their roots. The struggle that takes when they are inundated by a plethora of other cultures? So maybe instead of being judgemental learn the adversity these Filams have overcome and wish to express.

      It is misguided. They didn't research the meaning of tribal tattoos in the visayas region. Tattoos back then are very specific to the tribe you belong to. Once you die, your ancestors will recognise you by the tattoo that you have. These people are just confused mutts reaching for a culture that they don't understand because they can't accept the American culture they grew up in

    Reading most of the comments are crazy!! Everyone island has its own sacred tattoo for those islands. The Samoans have been tattooing for years all the way back from the beginning, and so on with all the rest of Polynesia! Different patterns and lines with Mostly THE SAME MOTIFS!!! The inspiration came from what they saw on our islands and gave it meaning! So have Melanesians, and Micronesians... our own patterns gave us our own identities as a people or Island to Island. Just because you have a bigger Island doesn’t make you the originator! All South Pacific people share similarities because of island life but we are different in identities! Our Samoan culture is very Strong and way of life and tattooing! And so are the other Poly islands. Our tattooing and culture thrives still to this very day, reteaching our brothers and sister islands the art that was lost or taken away!! But the art BELONGS to us South Pacific people!!!! Damn, I mean Tonga still has a king and Queen! Very strong culture. Our history goes back thousands of years along with the tatau (tattoo). If Filipinos have there own tattoo but looks similar because of the motifs, well guess what? it’s Filipino because of there traditions and meaning that the sacred art meant to the tribe.. that’s the identity I’m talking about. They have there own. Are they the originators?NO..but they are in the South Pacific with us Polys, Mela’s, and micro! it’s our South Pacific Motifs but pattern is different for every Island. We should accept that they are Reviving it back for them. The Motifs and pattern belong to all the South Pacific! Also... To tell people where they come from is crazy... you should Go to Tonga, Fiji, and Samoa to give your thoughts but I bet you’ll leave learning something. Hawaii revived way finding for THEM!!other islands in Polynesia still practice it, it wasn’t lost.. the guy just reached out to the Micro dude for help! They still practice this in Samoa along with other islands, the Tatau is a very big part of my culture in Samoa and being Samoan. Its signifies, identifies and represents our culture way of life and status, WE NEVER STOPPED THE TATAU!!! We never lost the Fa’a Samoa way, it’s stronger than ever! Along with the Fijians, Tongans, and other Poly Islands. Filipinos have every right to revive the art because they also represent that region in the South Pacific!! We all share it!!! They have their own meaning of the motif such as the four waves.. we have ours.

      Thanks for your support brother but just a fact: tattooing in the Philippines started happening long before it did in Polynesia. Polynesians came from the Austronesian people from (second) the Philippines, and (first) Taiwan. All the magic of *Austronesian* tattooing is thought to have its home there.

    There are a lot of things to unpack with Apat na Alon. But above all I just hope that the tattoo artists behind the 'tribe' are giving back to the actual tribal communities they are profiting off of. I understand that they probably do extensive research and can appreciate that they are trying to revive dying arts. I just hope that they can use their platform to bring awareness to indigenous communities and evolve from this narrative that these designs belong to "filipinos." The Philippines is a multi ethnic nation, and for many non indigenous filipinxs, i think we can love indigenous art forms without trying to claim it as our own!

      Manalo Cab So what, just because I wasn't born in the PI doesn't make me Filupino? we share the same blood. oh and they have visited the last few kalinga men. and those last kalinga warriors were proud of them because they were appreciating their culture more than those born in the PI. they're own children hated the tattoos because of colonial mental. we all have roots going back to different tribes in the Philippines. these people actually care about the culture more than you. you'd rather watchi it die than to revive it. Not all of them are American born, those who were born in the Philippines grew up by their parents telling them that tattooing was a taboo and only for criminals. Honestly you wouldn't care for tattoos if a white man didn't make a big deal about this cultural treasure.

    • @admancab
      @admancab 6 лет назад +3

      Again, you're missing the point man. You can't own the rights to something if you don't own its copyright in the 1st place. You can go say stuff that may make you feel like you're some kind of a proud Pinoy but stick to the main point man. They wrote this, not me -->
      "We ask that you do not copy the patterns of the tattoos given here as well as the tattoos from our other pages. These tattoos have actual meanings that are specifically made for the person wearing them. Each pattern and design depict their own personal stories of their lives and ancestry, NOT YOURS!!! “Research your own roots and water your own tree.” And oh by the way, please spell FILIPINO correctly mister proud pinoy.

    • @epicfail8798
      @epicfail8798 6 лет назад +4

      Manalo Cab what they meant by that is that you shouldn't directly copy their storyline,
      they put those patterns in a specific order that helps tell their lives and achievements in life. by copying their exact design of their tattoos Is like taking the identity of that person and saying that's my life. I lived and achieved these things. But some of the patterns they use are stacked so they can correlate to how we live now. because obviously we don't live how you may live in the PI. That's what they meant by "research your own roots, and water your own tree."

  • @MrNemo1one

All Polynesians can trace their DNA on their maternal side back to one Igorot woman in the Philippines. Even the plants and animals (dogs, chickens and pigs), amcan all be traced back to the Philippines as well through DNA🤷🏾‍♀️ Already proven long ago through DNA and language that we are all related throughout our common Austronesian heritage tho devided and forgotten due to colonialism.

    War tattoos without earning them is stolen valor. Same as tattooing a congressional medal of honor on your skin or special forces patch without having earned it. In any tribal culture today noone gets traditional war tattoos without having earned them. To do so is Stolen Valor cause those markings tell a story of acts the warrior performed in battle or war. It's not just a cultural thing. Not just anyone from the same culture or tribe can wear the markings of a war veteran or markings that claim you performed specific deeds in war and earned rank in a special military class. And some of these markings belong to specific families in specific tribes. Not every Pinoy belongs to same tribe just like not every Mexican has azteca blood.

    This is heavy on my chest. For any Filipino - regardless of your blood quantum or place of birth - if you are seeking a traditional cultural tattoo to honor your ancestors, I would quite honestly pass on the info coming from SJT. One thing that is failed to be stated is the distinction between art and a cultural marking. This is art, no matter what anyone tells you. Sure it looks tight, but this work just screams lateral appropriation to me. You can't take sacred motifs from one ethnic group and put it in the placement of another on someone from an entirely different group. Just saying. If you want some some flashy 'filipino pride' tat, sure go ahead, but be wary of putting others ancestral marks on your skin, it's disrespectful and ignorant. Preservation of culture and traditions must be done as accurately and appropriately. Otherwise, it's not preservation, it's just further destruction.
    Simply, you want to honor your ancestors? Start seeking them out first. The markings come after you understand who you come from.

What have they done for the Cordilleran people? Other than take their culture and put their sacred markings onto their bodies for profit.

      I think he has done alot than most of us will do in our lifetime. While I agree that they should give back to the tribal communities back home there is alot of merit in this work. And idk anything about their finances but the interest, intruige and overall presentation of the work and knowledge is (in my opinion) a good gift back to the community because not many Filipinos outside of students/professors/researchers in anthropology/history courses in higher education would even think - let alone attempt to practice these traditions.
      1) It gives younger Filipinos who are outside the Philippines (such as myself) another reason to dig into our cultural history with the resources available online. It's very easy to get lost in the History when you try to search up the history of the place you come from - tattoos or otherwise.
      2) They are sharing our culture and making us feel like we aren't a bastard child of colonial Spain. Before doing research I didn't even know that our original alphabet was removed by the Spanish. I didn't know that our country was named after a European monarch.
      3) it opens the gate for cultural expansion and metamorphosizes the original meaning to root us in ancient practices during our current time. Take the Hakka for example - its a war dance originally done to intimidate and signal war but now is used in everything from a opening ritual during sporting events to being done as a sign of respect to someone. To add to this point, our traditions and rituals may be expanded on and shared with people outside our culture for the purpose of it living on in a shared one.
      4) It's nice to know that a part of our culture is enviable by other people.
      The Spanish washed us in their own culture but never treated us as equals. Now do I think we should get rid of our Spanish heritage? Hell no, that's still apart of who we are but we shouldn't ignore all the other parts of the Filipino culture (some of which may not be shared ethnically by all Filipinos but should still be celebrated equally).

      @@ajaj-tp8tr This is not preservation. It's exploition and ignorance. It's actually pretty fricking dangerous in my opinion. They misrepresent the ancient practice, and putting out this info... it's really misinformation. If you really want to preserve and and participate in the practice, look to those Cultural Practitioners who are both back home and here in the states. There is a huge difference between a tattoo artist and cultural tattoo practitioner (often called a Mambabatok), and these individuals are absolutely tattoo artists.

Why not preserve the method, like in other cultures, in other countries? such a shaky argument.

      isi naulu, Your seeming bigoted remarks should not go unchallenged considering the ignorance of your afro centric origin nonsense. You also confused the origin of crops and the lapita culture. The slow boat theory of Polynesians and DNA studies from 1,000 Pacific Islander populations from 14 Pacific Island nations have more in common with Austronesians. The central and eastern islands of the Pacific show a dna pattern among males coming from melanesia. But not their females and certainly not most of the islands of the Pacific. Which tend to point to a genetic profile not from Africa but Southeast Asian Islands. Furthermore the speech pattern of melanesians have nothing in common with the speech pattern of Polynesian but show similarities to the Austronesian languages like the Philippines. The lapita culture and crops found in the islands show links to Taiwan Aborigines and East Asia. In other words, the ancestors of the Pacific islanders came from the Philippines or Taiwan. They in turned intermixed with melanesians in islands where they are found and not in others where they are not the population.

      did you know that POLYNESIANS, MELANESIANS, and MICRONESIANS came from Southeast Asia? Specifically in Taiwan. They just migrated from Taiwan, then through Philippines they spread in the whole Southeast Asia (malaysia, indonesia) then some went to Indian ocean and found MADAGASCAR, then some sail from Philippines and Indonesia to what you call now Pacific Islands (hawaii, easter is., new zealand, guam, samoa, palau, marianas)
      so before BOASTING your CULTURE like it was not originated or came from other culture, research boy. yabang yabang bwisit.
