Thank you for all the great comments :)
    Corrections:
I Did not mention the Philippine-American War (1899-1902). This took place during the United States Military Government of the Philippine Islands 1898-1902 at 6:45 into the video.
The Philippine-American War was an armed conflict between the First Philippine Republic and the United States. I should have included this.
I pronounced several words wrong including Barangays, ifugao, and archipelago :(

Thank you for this video because a lot of people both foreign and local think the natives were civilized only when the Spanish colonized us... it's sad.
The Spanish brainwashed people into believing that they civilized the natives but they also made the Boxer Codex which depicts the natives in expensive silk clothings and lavish gold jewelries.

Before Spaniards arrived your country as such did not exist, but a bunch of divided islands and tribes. The name of your country is the name of the Spanish king at that time. USA and its allies in Europe have been working hard to undermine Spain. You were a province in Spain, not a colony. Anglo Saxon culture is a criminal one along with Dutch.

My father’s family were the Cheiftains of Ifugao, the Igorots of this area. (I say this bc many people I’ve encountered are embarrassed or down play their Igorot lineage.) My mom’s maternal grandfather was the great Datu of modern day Benguet (Igorot Area). After the US politically organized the mountains of Luzon, the US appointed him as mayor of Kapangan (which drastically shrunk his fiefdom). When you visit the courthouse of Kapangan you will see, Fianza’s name in the list of chiefs and mayors. For some clarification, the US gave large portions of Igorot lands of modern day Baguio and Benguet to several rich and politically savvy Ilocanos. That is why igorots have not historically been mayors of Baguio or have been at the high end of business leaders. Basically, we were cut out of the democratization of our lands.

      @diegofianza3525 6 лет назад +14

Let me add a thanks and this. You had many correct and long forgot facts. Among them were the gold anklets. My dad’s dad told me of these ornaments. Men of high ranking in Ifugao would wear them. In fact, the more worn, then the more prestige. Also the louder they became while walking. This sound of several anklets clanging was the sound of a member of Ifugao high society-besides having certain facial tattoos but that’s another story...

Kabsat. My wife has igorot blood and im happy you know who you are and from whence u came. Can i suggest that your Grandfatherd were probably not called datus but lakay or lakan. 😉
Also ilocanos seem to be racially more similar to igorots and it seems to me that they were simple lowland igorot who were force christianized by spain.
It seems apparent that the kingdoms of kaigorotan and katagalugan (which was the kingdom of tondo and included kapampangans and bicolanos) were the greater kingdoms whih existed in luzon in oldened days(funily kapampangan seems to mean from the banks of the river and tagalog actually came from taga ilog from the river)
Im happy you know you truly come from these lands. I sadly cannot as most of my ancestors were the insular spaniards and their bastards the "mesrizos". We were in a sense the primal Filipinos as i believe that the Filipino identity is a synthetic, colonial identity. Most of my people were the latest and most virulant immigrants to these lands.
The original inhibitants however... the austronesians and the malays and the others were classed differently but they should not be ashamed of who they are and that they should stand proud that they are not originally filipino.
I dont agree with the filipino identity honestly but if it flourishes further and not destroy itself. I pray it well.
As for me and my wife. We are joining a different people soon

You are not a Pilipino indeed. No central government? Maybe yes, because we are sharing the gift of nature evenly. But to say we have no identity, wow! You must research the life of Pilipino before Spanish occupation through the Chronicle of Antonio Pegafetta and or The Boxer’s Codex. You will envy who we were. As Merchants of gold and silver, we once have the biggest ships that sails the seas near and far, southeast Asia, India, Shri Lanka, China, Japan, Micronesia and as far as Hawaii. Even Greeks reached our lands trading gold and silver. Spaniards knew that this Islands is Ophir (Source of Solomon’s Gold), they tried to occupy our Islands and erased all documents and and kept our history secret so no other foreigners would ever attempt to contest them in owning the wealth of our lands.
Also also look for the Philippine Gold: The Forgotten Kingdom, and you will have an idea of how were the lives of our forefathers and how known they are in the region. These are the only few info of so many.

Filipinoes are "katulongs" because they chose to do that job. I don't even know why you pointed that out, It's a job they chose.
About the roman chatolic thing, another stupid thing you brought up. Of course we can't be roman chatolics if the spaniards didn't come. Where/How else are we supposed to gain that knowledge? The ocean?
Spanish did a lot of bad things. Including the so called prayles. But When someone is raped and they enjoyed it. it's not fucking rape. No one wants to be raped for fuck's sake.
I know that our ancestors did not want to be roman chatolics. But, remember that they were forced to be atught and to be believed by everyone. If not, they will be punished. So what are weak women and children supposed to do? fight? So instead of dying they chose to live. You can't even write/say something bad about those spaniards without getting killed. But, tradition is tradition. What our ancestors did is what we'll do. So if a lot of people believed in roman chatolic back then, so will the generation after that, and the generation after that.

Filipinos are naturally very hardworking and willing to take any job although the problem could be is that they have no selfworth anymore but they're just not as finicky as other people. Also, because the pay in here is not as high in other countries more people tend to seek greener pastures and work abroad, building other nations while their own country lacked the best professionals cause they're elsewhere making other countries more successful.
People remained Catholic because of the teachings and their own choice.
With the long colonization there is still a struggle to find their own identity.
While not all the natives embraced Catholicism there were many who did even the Rajas themselves were the ones who embraced it. Go research on how Catholicism spread and started in Cebu.
The reason why "Maharlika" was not used was because while it has a noble meaning in the Filipino language it was said that it has a negative meaning in another country.
Actually, Marcos Era was focused on uplifting the dignity of Filipinos. Buying used clothes was imported from other country was strictly banned (Bawal ang ukay-ukay) I believe being a katulong abroad was also banned. Imelda has great regard for the arts. Iconic structures were built because they dreamt of a world-class country(hence, the extravagance). But all that was remembered of the Marcos regime was martial law and the abuses that followed, (and the debts because most projects were abandoned and even destroyed) :/
And now, they have an unplanned, chaotic country 'cause of the lack of respect in professions. They've lost their esteem and forgot to build their identity and rather work for other people than make a name of their own. All they could do now was blame everything to the one who sits in the highest position.

What makes you say the Philippines hasnt preserved thier heritage? the Philippines still has 100+ fucking languages most are of Austronesian and Malay origin each ethnic group still has its own unique cuisine. so you obviously have no idea or don't really know anything about the country
you have a point that some nations had internal warring states periods but did they face several foreign imperial forces at that point in their countries development? the Philippines had battles against Spain since the 1565 the Philippine revolution started at 1896 Philippine-American War 1899 Japanese Occupation at 1942 only finally achieving independence at 1945! a long list of wars against foreign imperial powers. War after war after war.i doubt any other country would've survived but the philippines did.
What do you want to happen have the Philippines be plunged in civil wars fighting like feudal warlords and barbarians for 100 more years? while most of the world are progressing? different countries face different challenges pretty stupid to compare another country to another. Japan have no natural resources pretty much why western colonizers left them alone, China is naturally resource rich.
Don't be a fool even if this war of unification did happen theres a 0% chance it would succeed since foreign capitalists would just take advantage of it siphon even more resources from this country much like the wars in the middle east.
That kind of thinking is outdated foolish and dangerous.

Lakan means Elder or chieftain. Those came from the north of the Philippines. Datu's and Maharaja are from the Visayan Island and northern Mindanao. Your depiction of a Filipino native with a bolo or weapon, wearing a towel, necklace and all the adornment with a funny head cover, is the imagination of the Spaniards. People of Panay came from Panai, Sumatra. They were a part of a Buddhist Thalassocratic Empire, that dominate much of the western Maritime of Southeast Asia, due to its location by the Strait of Malacca (circe 700-1200 ad). It controlled what could be the equal to the Panama Canal of today. In 1200 the Empire collapse because it was conquered by the Majapahit and the Chola empires from south India. The Vijayan refuse to be enslaved by the conquerors fled towards the Philippines in Panay which name came from Panai, Sumatra. Some fled as far as Madagascar. The story is longer than you imagine. Get it right.

We’d be different religions (some countries following Hinduism, some following Theravada or Mahayana Buddhism, some following traditional animism and ancestor worship, and some of course Muslim), and we would use our native Baybayin script to write our respective languages/dialects, like Cambodians or Thais do today.. we’d also most likely be collectively richer, as our huge gold and mineral deposits wouldn’t have been depleted by 3 centuries of Spanish rule.

Meralco and Mwss was government owed and every year people receives surplus money given to the consumers, now privatized by the cronies of Aquino and even oil and gas pricing was controlled by the Energy regulatory board but deregulated by Ramos in favor to the big companies Shell, Petron and caltex. now the government is bankrupt by the greedy 5 presidents. today President Duterte is trying his best to stop corruption bringing back the plans of Marcos senior one is the free water irrigation and prioritizing the agriculture sector and education which the past 5 Presidents neglected.

We aren't in a place where we can reminisce the good ol days of isolated kingdoms, we need international support and community if we want to improve the current state of life for those living in our homeland. It's why Filipinos are one of the largest diasporas in the world, being Christian and having Spanish/English dialects makes it easier to bond with the American countries, while still sharing some culture ques that tie us with the rest of Asia. If there's one good thing that came out of our colonial past, it's the unique identity Filipinos now have compared to our immediate neighbors. We can take pride in that, that we are a fluid melting pot of East and West, that we are people of not just islands but all over the world.

I hate it before because my dad wants us to eat vegetables you know you just grow them in your yard....it's good if he put some spices in it but he just throw them in the pot, Put water and salt and that's eat. Forgive me but my dad just passed away couple of years ago, he was a retired teacher but so strict like a military and still follow what his ancestors told him to respect those trees we pass by the streets. Now I hand it down to my kids...not to kill the darn spider dropping from the wall in our doorway.

Our culture is a big reflection of our great and complex history. It is influenced by most of the people we have interacted with. A blend of the Malay south East Asian with the influence from Chinese, Hispanic Indians Arabs, and other Asian cultures really contribute to the customs and traditions of the Filipinos. The philippine culture was never wiped out like Latin America. Much of the Philippine archipelago still speak their native languages that are Austronesian as well as cuisine which is dominantly Asian. Ethnically, the majority of Filipinos are Austronesian with Chinese fusions.

No it isn't, Philippines is an independent country.
      2. "Filipinos are still slaves of the Spanish people"
Lol no, slavery has been abolished
      3. "Philip II still owns them like he owns his dogs"
He's dead, long time ago. He owns nothing.
      4. "Filipinos hate their rich pre colonial history" No Filipinos hate anything, Filipinos doesn't just belong to one culture group but to many which may or may not be mixed or influenced. Also there's statues of precolonial warriors in the Philippines. And a precolonial native Lapu Lapu is a national hero. So you saying "Filipinos hate......" doesn't really add up to it.
      5. Yes we were "forced" to be catholic but not everyone. Some early Filipinos converted voluntarily. And keep in mind there are no perfect empires.
      6. We are still Catholics because we choose to be Catholics.
      7. There's a lot to be proud of. Every country has its problems.
      8. We don't need to conquer to prove we are strong.
      9. Idk about you but I'm being respected, so are my family and friends. Maybe it's just you and how you interact with foreigners, you uneducated fuck
      10. Katulongs become katulongs because they simply lack the money and education to become something else.
      11. And changing the name to Maharlikha? lol don't even
Let me tell you something friend, no empire is perfect. I won't deny that we were handled poorly but we should be thankful because otherwise, without them we wouldn't be united. And also I read an article that in that era, the officials back in Spain wasn't neglecting the Philippines, they knew what was going on and they even sent laws and decrees to make the spaniards in the Philippines less strict and cruel. But Spain can't really do anything else because for one, they're too far. Second, they've been involved in a lot of wars, so handling the Philippines by themselves were already a challenge. Idk what you're on about but if you really think that way, why not do something about it? you keep talking about it yet you waste your precious time and mine for this? prove me wrong when you become president

Great vid! Just wanted to also add that there were already Austronesians before the Malays coexisting with the Melanesians that came to the islands first. The Melanesians whom we call "Negrito" or "Agta" are theorized to have come to the Philippines via land bridges that connected the islands to the mainland. After these bridges sank into the sea, the first wave of seafaring Austronesians arrived through Taiwan and lived alongside and intermingled with the Agta.

The early settlers were influenced by hindu-buddist people. Fact that most leaders when Magellan arrived had title Sri or rajah. Filipino supertitious beliefs were actually came from stories in sanskrit folklore literature. Noted faith healers were learning the magic with sanskrit words. Later in the next centuries, these people defended well against the muslim vinta pirates who roamed around in visayas and mindanao.
The baybayin script used by these people were akin to brahmic scripts in india, myanmar and indochina. Indonesia and Malaysia used similar scripts before they changed to romanized alphabet. Some can trace in artifacts of balinese scripts.
