Let me give you guys some insight from Portugal... yes that country you thought was a province of Spain, I had a spontaneous pneumothorax, my left lung collapsed. I went to the ER, was attended immediately, went straight to surgery and spent 4 days in care. My bill came though the post a month later at under 100 euros. This country may have some issues but health care is a blessing provided to anyone as a civil right, not always perfect I must say but they wont let you die in the waiting room because you don't have a private insurance. Lessons to be leaned here.
I had a friend whose lung collapsed too. I'm pretty sure he's still paying off that steep hospital bill--he told me it was a couple $1000.
So in America he would have come out with a heart attack
My grandparents emigrated from The Azores to Canada. You’ll be happy to know that nearly no one in Canada thinks of Portugal as a province of Spain. The topic of Spain rarely, if ever, comes up in Canada, and, with a strong expatriate community in Canada, people know that Portugal is its own nation.
*And like with college debts, you would think a first world country like America wouldn't have this kind of issue.*
Or constant mass shootings.
That must be that american exceptionalism I keep hearing about.
News flash.....America is the "shithole country" of the developed world :)
If all those degree weren't frickin' MBAs.
America is not a first world country.
hahaahhhha america first world country hahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahaha good one. first world countries provide healthcare for free financed from taxes, dont have mass shootings in schools, you dont get murdered while shopping in a mall and the president is not a fucking russian puppet.
*I think I'm having a heart attack! Hold on, let me see if groupon has a deal!* 😂😂😂😂
Needed that last weekend for my dad. 😓
That’s sad in itself... but on the other hand... 🤣
😄😄😄😄
And here I thought Scrubs' Dr. Kelso was overkill evil for dramatic effect. Turns out, he might be the most realistic aspect of the show
It is most realistic dr show on TV they had dr to help out
@@helpingme181 They all do ^^ Realism is hard to define, because the general atmosphere is not like a real hospital, but rather highschool movie-esque. Everything is a lot more cute and funny and lighted and intact than it actually is in real life. But regarding the struggles with all the decisions they have to make, it's up there ^^
Ultrasound is practically free to make.
You're only paying for the staff time (1 doctor) and possibly for the longterm expense of the machine.
As an MD myself, even 100$ sounds wildly expensive for an in-house procedure that takes 10-15 minutes...
But maybe that's why the rest of the world has socialized medicine?
As a citizen of a developing country called Thailand it’s quite sad to see a developed country have these problems when Thailand doesn’t rlly face these problems oof
As an American who's sick of it all, can I come live with you?
It's called capitalism my friend. Competing on making the most 💲💲💲💸
Yep, lets move to Thailand for sure.
Unless you know someone in Thailand celebrates a genocide guy like hitler sure your country has no problems. I am not trying to be critical since the USA has is own issues but be mindful when you make statements like this
Yeah but you guys have $0.50 hookers and surprise organ transplants.
This is why my mom won’t take me to the emergency room unless she’s pretty sure I might die...😑
This is why I didn't go to the emergency room, even though I had several symptoms. My vision went blurry several times, out of nowhere.... I had headaches all the time, a ringing in my ears 5 days out of the week. I even researched brain cancer, since my dad died of a glioblastoma when I was 2. I told me friends in college, I thought I had a brain tumor- but if I was wrong, my family would kill me, because I had no way to pay for the scan. So I went without- 3 years later, I had a seizure and collapsed on the side of the road. Turns out I did have brain cancer... caused by a lovely inherited mutation from my dad.
I went through hell trying to get insurance in the US- now I'm teaching in South Korea. A place where the government helps cancer patients, by paying the majority of their bills. I plan to stay here as long as I can.
I've heard people say that with "more freedom" in the US- you just have to accept more tragedy and pain. Well, if this is "less free-" I'll gladly take it. I prefer the nonexistent crime, stellar students in school, and being able to afford my medical bills- 3 things which did not exist back home. Lord.
A random youtube user _____ Holy crap...😣 Completely agreed. I had a really bad drug interaction and found it hard to move as well as a horrible pain in my leg. I had no idea what was happening. I was alright in the end after it got out of my system, but no one should have to go through something possibly very dangerous and not be able to afford the hospital. We need single payer imo. I hope you’re alright!!
This is why we need Bernie.
@@arandomyoutubeuser_____8930 yeah you know plenty of asian country's health care is at least more affordable than what the us has. $94,000 is just ridiculous who the hell can afford that???
@@LadyAneh Thanks. I'm all right now. I was actually in Peace Corps Ukraine when I collapsed. I woke up in the hospital, being asked how long I'd been epileptic. I was so confused. But tbh, if I'd been in the US, I'd probably be dead. Peace Corps has a commitment to pay for any health issues that happens as a result of your service. They told me they wouldn't pay for everything, because they could and would argue that my cancer was not a result of my service. But they said since the symptoms were the worst during my time there, they would pay for my brain surgery and the start of radiation and chemo, but then I had to find something else.
The hospital I went to in the states told me that I was on their sponsorship, since they knew I couldn't work during that time. However- 6 months after the treatments, I got a surprise bill in the mail for $54,000! 😡
I've been told by the translator at a nearby hospital, that they're actually famous for their research on brain cancer, and a ton of foreigners go there for treatment. I've actually considered staying here if anything shows up in one of my scans.
I almost got denied an MRI back home, because I didn't know who would pay. I also got rejected by Medicaid, because I had the "wrong type of cancer." No joke. They only had forms for breast and cervical cancer. I absolutely loathe the healthcare in the states.
We’re going to be going to college on Groupon, it’s coming 😂
Sure, but the classes will be condensed to 5-hour sessions M-F for 2 months and start at a time of day that is impossible for you to fit in around your work schedule, and the deal will only be valid for that semester with no refunds for missing the sign-up period that is also at a time you can’t fit into your schedule.

@Vatsavai Venkata Satya mangapathi raju heck go to a developing nation if you actually want good and affordable treatment
I worked in a public hospital in Mexico.
The amount of wealthy Americans going there to get major surgeries is astounding.
I've heard similar stories about dental care.

When I applied for Medicare/Medicaid after being diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer- I was told I had the wrong type of cancer. No joke. They only had forms for breast and cervical cancer. I really wanted to tell whatever old man created that policy, that if I die, my lady parts go with me. Ridiculous.
Also was told that I was on hospital sponsorship for my cancer treatments, (since I was denied Medicaid) and then got a surprise bill for $54,000 six months later! I was almost denied an MRI, since they couldn't verify who would pay- a potentially life-saving scan, if my cancer were to come back. Lord have mercy. I now live in South Korea, and teach here. I’m not afraid of hospitals. I’m afraid of the bill.
I work for a medical provider as a biller. Was contacting one of the larger insurance companies, requesting info on the price of an MRI, and trying to calculate the cost for a patient. After several attempts over the phone, they advised me that the pricing was not available. Even providing specific diagnosis and CPT codes used for billing, we were still unable to get a price. They couldn’t even find information on the “allowable amount”, the price that they set for in network providers.
Our system is beyond broken, it’s just a cash cow.
I need that Groupon deal, Im gonna die I cant stop laughing.
Oh I was just at his Green Bay show! Even got his little bobble head and I'm still working on deciphering his code shirt. ^^
This is something I'm currently dealing with. I was first billed $2700, but I've talked with the financial department and luckily due to this sweet lady, Kathleen, I have been able to heckle the hospital down to a $250 bill that is from the doctors in the Emergency Department, shocking. 😑 I hope my dream of a world where people care for others more than money will one day exsist. Sending love 💕
Tell Mayor Pete that's why medicare for all is the solution.

Lewis Black ...amazing !!!! wish to see more of him on the show...
I deal with this all the time. I'm a cancer patient and I have been to the ER four times in the last year. It's been such a battle. I tell them they should not treat me if they're not in my network. I've gone to the hospital that's in my network. My insurance processes the bill as if it's in my network and then they balance bill me, for 10 times the amount my insurance paid. They make me do all the leg work each bill takes well over an hour's worth of work while I'm sick, on medical leave, to deal with. It's so stressful. They're so condescending too.
That's a large part of it, making people jump through all those damn hoops. Not everyone does that, and just pays whatever the bill says. They know this & count on this. It's ridiculous.
Travesty, Sabotage
I'm gonna write my own stand-up comedy show or book on this utter BS

I had a routine medical procedure done at the clinic where all of the physicians are, supposedly, in my network. Amazingly, however, the anesthesiologist and the specialist who evaluated the results were not and the total cost for the procedure ramped up from a $150 co-pay (had everybody truly been in my network) to $1800 out of pocket. To tell the truth, I feel that my health provider outright deceived me. I would switch providers but what's the point - they all do this sort of thing now.
One has to PAY to stay alive. That sounds completely intelligent.
100 for any procedure is literally how health care works all over the world. Where I live, it's USD $20 per day, no matter what they do. My first born in the US was 65,000. My other children born overseas cost less than 100 for four days of in-patient care for mother and baby combined.
Yeah I went to the hospital for severe back pain. They kept me waiting for so long that I got upset and anxious cause I was alone in another part of the state. So they sent a psych in there. She asked stupid and asinine questions like "are you gonna kill yourself or have you ever attempted to"
A few mins later they discharged me and when I said that they didn't do anything they said "yes we did, we treated you for your mental health issues"
They charged me as a mental health patient. Which isn't covered by insurance. They never sent a doctor in to look at my back. They kept me waiting for 5 hours of course I'm gonna get anxious! I wasn't having a meltdown. I didn't need mental health evaluation.
I had to go to the ER last week when I had a really bad stomach bug that left me extremely weak and dehydrated. I asked my dad if I should call an ambulance. I took an Uber to the ER. *7. Avoid leaping from buildings that aren't tall enough for the fall to kill you.*
Mr Black you are the best.
Man Lewis Black is looking way better for a while there he looked like age was starting to catching up with him but he looks sharp again. I hope he feels better too.
I had an ultrasound done on my ankle here in Japan. Cost me about 5 USD for the whole visit. What a scam that is being pulled on people who live in the USA.
My insurance won’t pay for a abdominal reconstruction surgery to repair multiple hernias, because it’s considered it a tummy tuck.. they turn me down saying I have to wait three years after weight loss surgery THAT I NEVER HAD!!!
the max out of pocket is for when you use in network doctors and facilities. If they are out of network they are not regulated and they can charge any amount they want, and the insurance won’t cover ( some cover up to 20%) so you are left with a “surprise bill” because a doctor not in your network saw you when you went to a in network facility. It’s ridiculous and they are using that loophole to make millions ( the companies that staff ERs). Since Congress proposed a bill to stop the “surprise bills”, there have been a lot of ads on tv and radio trying to scare people, saying that one flat price would leave them with empty ERs, or bad service. Ridiculous.
"🖕 one dollar asshole" love it!!!
Is it within the realm of reason that we get a promise that Lewis Black never die? This guy is too cool for death. Like an angier version of George Carlin (rest his soul) XD
He's looking better than he was before
yep, i've had to appeal every time we go to the ER over the years because the ER uses out-of-network doctors even though it's an in-network facility
I got a 6000 bill after my emergency c section. I saw the breakdown, it was ridicules. 50,000 and my insurance paid 42gs. And a lady came in to my room 10 hours after my c csection while I was nursing my son to ask me to set up payments. My job paid it cuz I had 10,000 flex pay, but still. Also they kept trying to give me oxy even tho I told them I didnt want it.
Two weeks ago my doctor prescribed a new drug. Had a severe reaction to it and had to be hospitalized for 5 days. The job I had was a state government job which required me to give up my medicaid until i was there long enough to be qualified for their health plan. So being hospitalized for almost a week i lost said job and was in the hospital uninsured. Right now I am sitting on $3K debt after losing this job because they made me give up my medicaid to get hired. Also, I am running out of my medications that make it possible for me to even work and they cost between $200-$500 without insurance for a 30 day supply
Dass Gernot Hassknecht so berühmt werden konnte mit einer einfachen Kopie
müsst ich mich erst drüber informieren noch nie was von gehört
I love lewis black hes so funny
3:55 he looks like a real good doctor
Lewis Black should host the Daily Show
I had accidentally poisoned myself with some chemical. Went to the ER because my chest was tightening up.
Despite the fact I have health insurance i was billed (rounding here) about $450 for ER visit, $183 for ER Dr., $75+ for equipment cost from a company outside of the hospital. Meaning just as the report said I had to pay another company money for using equipment I had used in hospital which was out of state.
