I'd like to personally thank all the teams that passed on Mahomes. The turnaround that the Chiefs have made since drafting him is unbelievable, and I'm loving every minute of it! 😎
What turnaround? The Chiefs were 53-27 in the 5 seasons prior to drafting Mahomes, getting to the divisional round twice. Averaged 10 wins. Andy Reid is the one that turned the Chiefs from doormat to powerhouse. Mahomes just took them to the next level.
@@John6-40 they still went nowhere in the playoffs before Mahomes arrived. Andy made them a winner again, but it took the addition of Mahomes to win two Super Bowls.
His lack of recruiting interest is pretty damn wild. It did not take him very long to start making unbelievable plays on the field as a true freshman at Texas Tech, despite the fact we were told by the recruiting services that he was a 3-star dude who would need a bunch of development as a bench-warmer. His talent was heavily underestimated.
Which does actually speak to the fact that while Tech capitalized on his talent, they weren't exactly geniuses by nabbing him. Ostensibly, Mahomes had to go somewhere, and his 3-star rating combined with the fact that he was from Texas lined him up nicely for getting an offer from Tech. Even Tech didn't know exactly what they were getting - Mahomes didn't start week one. But they tried all their QB's that year (2013) in the starting lineup - Mahomes, Mayfield, and Webb. Once they saw him out there, where I believe Tech was genius showed up in keeping Mahomes over Mayfield. Many people would've disagreed with that until 2018, but the decision certainly aged well. There's a reason for that, but regardless of those early years he has come a long way, and shown his haters that not just that he has potentials, he's very talented, and smarter than most of his haters who talked trash about him at every turn. 💯🤴
A couple of observations. He owes a lot of his overall success to the encouragement of his family. Seems they understood that it's important to see beyond the frustration of the day and sticking to it. Also, Patrick is fortunate that the Bears overlooked him. They had the same problem selecting talent in other positions, as well as management. He likely would have never seen the success in Chicago that he has in Kansas City.
He did have some other offers. He wanted to play baseball in college as well. This turned most schools away since they believed that he was going to be a baseball player anyway. He was on the baseball team as a freshman but it was obvious that he was better in football.
If Patrick went to a playoff contending team in college, those coaches would’ve forced Patrick to change his style. Texas tech with kliff was the best thing to ever happen to him. Maybe next time being a father...

Pat Mahomes, Russell Wilson, Lamar Jackson all were drafted below where their talent dictated. They lead their teams to 5 Super Bowls and produced multiple MVPs. Hmm! Why were these players drafted below where their talent dictated!
What really hurt Patrick mahomes was that his father was a major league pitcher. Despite his talents at football, it was possible that he would play professional baseball.
I disagree. The reason that Mahomes was disregarded and disrespected is because he was unusual, and had different skill sets than the scouts were used to seeing. So, was that Mahomes fault? I posit that the scouts and coaches that ignored him thought they were making a wise decision. Fortunately, he was picked by Andy Reid, who saw the potential, and nurtured and developed that potential into greatness. Kevin Sumlin was the HC for A&M at the time and had just lost Johnny Manziel. Given Johnny’s success and unconventional play style it’s shocking that he didn’t recruit Mahomes
You could see him making NFL level tight-window passes in high school. Every fault pointed out by scouts turned out to be an outside-the-box strength. He has changed the entire game, with defenses being designed to stop him, and almost always failing. Andy Reid didn't have much trouble envisioning a QB that could do anything Andy could write down on paper.
I don’t know about that…because he was still considered too much gun slinger, reckless. I mean how first, very first play in college resulted in a fumble and an interception on the same play. Same play, he fumbles, recovers, then threw a pick. It was a god send for Patrick to have kliff as his coach. Thank god he never went to sec. They’d screw his mechanics up.
Another reason? Johnny Manziel. Manziel was a little undisciplined, a diamond in the rough and had development "potential". Nobody was going to try that dumpster fire of an option again so soon. So Patrick gets passed over.
I knew Andy Reed and BA knew what kinda talent he was. KC jumped in front of the Cardinals because they knew BA was licking his chops at the shot of getting his hands on Pat.
The scrutiny starts at such a young age that the system is very narrow in scope. You wind up with one kind of player. Then, with luck, the rare talents surface. Tony Dorsett-too small, Tom Brady- too risky, Patrick - too quirky. Meanwhile, they are usually muti talented.
Football is the most conservative sport and if you don't fit into their "playbook" you get overlooked. Are his size they wanted a picked passer. Either way, he didn't get totally overlooked. He played at an FBS institution in a Power 5 conference. That isn't getting overlooked. Also, considering that he played other sports AND entered the MLB draft, that didn't help.
So In Other Words Patrick M. Was A Undercover Underdog Quarterback Designated For KC. Mo. For Other Teams NOT To See His Future Accomplishments Except For Andy Reid. WoW For Andy...
These recruiters seem to have no great talent in recognizing true qb talent. They seem to only want to check off the boxes, and show no interest in anyone who doesn’t fit in their box. They take no interest in things like heart or competitiveness or the will to win, but only in things like how fast is he in the 40, or how tall is he, how strong of an arm does he have etc.. Guys like Brady, Rodgers, etc weren’t shown much early interest, while other top draft picks never amounted to anything special.

Mahomes Was in the right situation. He was really lucky. I wonder if Tim Tebow had Andy Reid if he would’ve been a Super Bowl quarterback
Some schools wasted time with Johnny Manziel over this guy lol
You should be a bigger channel
We’re getting there! Thanks man!
I think it worked out pretty well for him...
Texas probably didn't recruit him because if being Texas Tech the rival
So because he didn't have the people around him as a sophomore in high school, then he wasn't even on anyone's radar.
Maybe mahomes not getting interest out of high school that propelled him to where he is today
Ribbit ribbit
Well shoot Kingsbury basically had to beg him not to switch to baseball. I think he played for tech for a couple games
Mark my words
Patrick Mahomes is going to be a heck of a quarterback, one day
BUCS NEED TO FIRE BRUCE ARIANS
Well you got your wish. And now your qb is gone too.
KANSAS CITY LOVE PATRICK) SAY WHAT YOU WANT) CHIEFS)57)
These recruiters seem to have no great talent in recognizing true qb talent. They seem to only want to check off the boxes, and show no interest in anyone who doesn’t fit in their box. They take no interest in things like heart or competitiveness or the will to win, but only in things like how fast is he in the 40, or how tall is he, how strong of an arm does he have etc.. Guys like Brady, Rodgers, etc weren’t shown much early interest, while other top draft picks never amounted to anything special.
163, dang I’m slow today
Really Many Passes and Kicking themselves for it. Wanting to change him.
TO ATHE HATERS DOUBTERS...
NOW WHAT????
One word - Baseball.
what I just heard is that all of those camps destroy the natural ability of prospects by forcing them all to fit one pattern.
I likes this vato loco 😎
Well they did that to Tom Brady and look what Tom Brady did Patrick is a great player and they all know it
