    • @andrewsercer9538
      @andrewsercer9538 8 месяцев назад +1

      It's not that he targeted a receiving team's foot/ankle... it's the fact that with pressure in his face that had been lacking in his other BOMBS (good bombs not bad) he had to get it off more quickly and with less follow through which resulted in his shortest punt, which was not expected by the receiving team due to his previous punts. That led to the blockers being closer to where the punt landed, thus making the possibility of hitting one of them all that more likely.
      Call that luck if you want to, but it was a clear, logical progression of the way the special teams as a whole for KC was dominating the game (not just Tommy Townsend) with SF adjusting to get blockers closer to the punt returner in the first place.

    Any punter who can consistently give you long hang time when he kicks is worth his weight in gold. It's an impressive skill that requires adamantine strength in the legs and uncanny coordination. Had the second half not been way higher scoring than the first. I think he def could’ve won MVP. I mean that punt in where it hit the 9ers foot saved the chiefs the game. Not to mention he’s been amazing the whole game. Realistically and I don’t mean to hate on mahomes or anything but I genuinely think this guy contributed more than mahomes when it comes to What is expected of the position-> their actual game results.
    Obv a QB is gonna impact the game more than the punter it’s just how football works but if you asked me if they got a mid punter or a mid QB to replace mahomes or this guy during the Super Bowl? Getting the mid punter might actually be a bigger loss due to how many drives were stopped short due to these amazing punts.

    • @leobuss7249

    • @pulse6982
      @pulse6982 8 месяцев назад +2

      I think you’re mistaking results and value. Unforced errors cannot be attributed to the punter, your analysis is flawed as you base your premise as plays by player equals points. By your logic, butker and mahomes directly contributed to more points in this game than TT did directly so in his entire career. Isolating plays without context in a team game is something I don’t agree with and arguments can be made to restructure MVP awards for offense defense and special teams but your take is simply illogical.

    • @iswiftyfox8997
      @iswiftyfox8997 8 месяцев назад

      Y’all are saying he got lucky but mahomes got lucky with this and the missed PAT. Mahomes really didn’t play that good this game. This guy should’ve won mvp. He did everything perfectly. And obv a punter can’t score points but he set up his offense and defense in amazing positions which indirectly caused them to win. He def provided more value than any player on the team

    Fun fact: both Townsend and his counterpart Mitch Wishnowsky punted 5 times for 254 yards in this game. As far as punters averaging 50+ yards on 5 punts, it's not terribly uncommon, to the point where both punters have done so in a game many times (most recently, prior to this game, Blake Gillikin and Trenton Gill on Christmas Eve, 2023), but only Seattle's Tom Rouen had ever done so in a Super Bowl, back in 2005-06. As far as both punters in a game finishing with the same number of punts and yards, in nontrivial cases when both punted multiple times, this was the most yards I could find on a cursory search (and in Super Bowl LVI, the two punters finished only a yard apart with 261 and 260 yards).

    I am so annoyed that all media has been focused on Mahomes, Kelce, and the defense of the chiefs for their victory. Don't get me wrong they all were important but a kicker was in contention for super bowl mvp and he has not been getting acknowledged properly. The city of Kansas owes him dearly and tbh he did more than Kelce because without him they don't stay in that game (honestly one of the weaker super bowl mvps because the defense also did so much but stat line wise it will easily go to the quarterback).

    You forgot to mention that hair! Hope he sees this, not everyday you see punters celebrated this way, heck I don’t notice it, but I noticed how well he was doing here for sure!

    Honestly the title isn’t misleading at all he shoulda won it no one played well enough to win it
    Plus a punter is arguably your most valuable player on your team

    seriously flipped that field after so many 3-and-outs... and forced the 9ers to deal with all of them... totally redeeming his performance in that first superbowl.

    Buckner scored 13 points and had a record FG and TT had some fantastic hangtimes but Patrick was in control of the entire field. He is the reason that the Chiefs are winners. Patrick NEVER gives up.

    It's always struck me as odd that a game called football places the smallest value on those who use their feet.
    Until punting, field goals, and extra points are taken out of the game entirely, kickers will always be highly underrated, and great kickers highly in demand. The momentum punters can snuff out in either starting the other team way the hell back, forcing a fair catch or setting up for a big hit is overlooked. Field goal kickers are never appreciated unless they kick one that puts their team ahead at critical points in the game, or in the event of a game winner. There are so few extremely talented kickers out there that exhibit consistent reliability...

    Imagine him and Tucker from the Ravens on the same team. Nasty kicking tandem right there. Do you want hold to a field goal at 60 yards? Or, take a fair catch at 60 yards?

      They had a better advantage further down the field. If the niners had got the ball. It would have been KC's ball at the point TT got taken out

    I generally don't pay much attention to punters (as I assume most people do) but I remember that in his rookie year, when the Chiefs played the Chargers in what was Herbert's first start in the NFL, I was in a group chat talking about the game and I typed "Who is the Chiefs punter? That guy has a mortar for a leg."

    tommy townsend is BY FAR the best clutch field-goal holder in the league. check out the game winner v. the eagles in last year's super bowl. and there are many others. i can't recall a better combination of kicker and punter in recent nfl history. go chefs.
