You excited about Double Dragon Collection coming to all modern systems November 9... It includes... NES Double Dragon 1, 2 & 3, and Double Dragon 4, as well 2 bonus games... Double Dragon Advance and Super Double Dragon! I'm really hoping that it's the Super Famicom ver, Return Of Double Dragon!!!!!!
So excited to finally hear your thoughts on it and so glad that you're enjoying it. Lots of fair concerns that we'll look into. I do like to point out regarding 13:35 , that Secret Base is just me, Raymond. I have a partner for this project who works on the game's programming, but the core team is just 2 person! Of course, there were many freelance artist, musicians, voice actor, etc. that I've engaged, but that was entirely funded by my personal saving. We only engaged Modus in January, after the game is completed, as I spent every last penny and needed funding for porting and online multiplayer development, and marketing support. As for Arc System Works, I was the one that pitch them the idea, so this isn't a paid job, but more of a big studio giving a nameless indie developer a chance. I'm actually quite proud that people are comparing the work of 2 guys to established studios like Wayforward, Lizard Cube and Tribute games, but too many people seems to be getting this part of the story wrong, I'm not sure if I should be happy or sad, haha.
Thanks so much for the clarification Raymond! I didn't know Secret Base was that small! I mistakenly assumed it was a full team (for indie sized games at least) so that puts some things like how hard implementing online play would have been (I was there myself) in perspective.
@@MattMcMuscles No worries! Many people have made that assumption, and we've always take it as a compliment, haha. The good news is that thanks to Modus, we were able to work with yet another friend to help work on the online multiplayer while we were busy finishing up the game. So hopefully we will see it soon!
I got it around 2:00 pm I played for about 3 hours. You know the game's good when I intentionally trade in my lives and continues for tokens and then unlock the characters. The game's actually a lot of fun and i really enjoy it. The only thing i'd ask is to create a Dodge mechanic or a parry mechanic Of course, online play and maybe like a gauntlet mode. Either way the game's a lot of fun and I really enjoy it. The fact that such a small team made this, that's actually really cool. It's a lot of fun and I really enjoy it !
@@Satsui_No_Hado Thanks for the kind words! I've heard a lot about request for Dodge or I-frames, so I guess people are feeling that too many hits were not justify. I will try to see what I can do :)
I haven't played this one yet, but based on the gameplay I've seen and Slope and Matt's praise, holy fuck, way to go, Raymond. Seriously, when I think "indy dev" it's usually some nonsensical bullshit that's way too impressed with itself, not revitalizing a franchise from my childhood. Hopefully, this gets you some "cash" to "continue" making great games.
Honestly, all jokes aside, it was objectively the smartest thing to do. Just like our boy said the series has way too much baggage, so having the game take place before all that nonsense occurred was a great strategy.
I feel like the tag mechanic is supposed to be a stand in for a dodge/block, it's easy to get stunlocked and the tag breaks you out of a lot of bad situations. It uses the same bar as the special moves so it feels like sort of a risk/reward thing - use the special to get those juicy crowd control bonuses but don't abuse or mistime it or you lose your defense.
I know what you mean, On the last fight my characters died nearly instantly because I can't evade. If I do tag my 2nd character is standing there like "HIT COME ON HIT ME!!!" Then dies. Which almost kept me from beating the game on the Max difficulty.
Yes indeed, that was the plan! I think when you realize that, it works really well. However, it seems to take too much for people to realize this, which is something to think about.
It seems like the food award could be announced with, say, an icon overlapping the portrait of the character earning it, or even just a distinctive sound. Screen-covering, game-pausing interruptions feel like they should be spared for things like boss introductions and defeats and the like- things that are predictable and announce a change in play, rather than an event the player might trigger multiple times in a level. Especially in a 2-player game. You don't want your partner cursing you out to stop KO-ing three mooks at once.
I’m late since you posted your comment but if you haven’t played it yet, there is an option to disable that award pause and make the game run normal without interruptions.
Great review. I'm truly glad this game seems like the perfect logical step for Double Dragon to go in. I pretty much agree with all of your points, especially concerning the story; the post apocalyptic setting was perfect for the series and there should be more focus on it. Hopefully this game does well enough to put the Lee brothers back in full prominence.
The character art style grew on me over the course of the video, but man does it feel weirdly out of place for the series. I guess it's not any more out of place than the cartoon versions, lol. Everything else looks and sounds fantastic, I think I have to pick this up. thanks for the push!
I'm far from thrilled about the art direction. I'm still going to buy this to support the franchise though, we need more DD games. I just hope that in the future we get more 'mature' DD games again, like the NES ones or RoDD.
Woah, i didn't know about that progression order mechanic - sure, other reviewers mention that you can choose the order you tackle each gang, but you're the only one who explains that each subsequent gang becomes more powerful, and even the boss fight itself can change because of this, so it's much more than just Megaman-style level choice, that's awesome! Definitely getting this game
If they would add more characters, I would love Skullmageddon to be added. Maybe the Okada sisters . . . maybe. But also maybe a crossover character or two, like at least from River City Ransom. I would love to say that I wouldn't mind seeing some more arcsys characters added as bonus content as well, but I'd rather not ask or expect them to go that crazy. Honestly River City Ransom would be enough, maybe even River City Girls.
Some characters like Chen & Linda actually do have evasive moves. Even without tho....there's a dedicated run, i-frames in the double jump (as well as a recovery), & a bailout on the tag. Jussayin; there's options....(I knew they were legit when I played Bimmy/Jimmy w/ casino as the last stage & got through allllllll them obstacles w/o gettin hit) Btw huge thanks for your preview; it sold me on the game & not only do I not regret the purchase....I would actually put it up there w/ SOR4 & Shredder's Revenge. So much nuance under the hood here...
I agree. If they added some sort of "universal" dodge/evade mechanic then it would take away from some of the differences/strengths of certain characters.
At 1st I was hoping that DDG would get the look of how Lizard Cube did Streets Of Rage 4... But the art style of this game has It's own Uniqueness about it.... And the gameplay 4 damn sure makes up 4it... The characters and the juggle system is out standing I would definitely Recommend Double Dragon Gaiden...👏🧐💯🥂
Gotta check out the Double Dragon Spin-Off that was on Neo Geo. Rage of the Dragons was an interesting 2v2 with only our protagonists amid plenty of memorable fighters. Brue Wrave.
Update: Its really fun. Its really good and has tons of replay value regardless of how many times you beat it. Theres tons of unlockables that honestly, arent that impressive but add something to work towards. The gameplay is solid. I like it
Im a huge Double Dragon fan since the 80's but the art style of this game could have been better. I understand the creative reason why the devs choose for this kind of style but I was hoping for a more Super Dragon art style or DD Neon. Still though I will get this game at some point to support the Devs. We need more DD games.
If they ever release more characters via DLC who would you want added. I know I jokingly say Sonny Lee, but how would he fight? Would it be more weapons based, or a mix Billy and Jimmy?
This game was developed by a very small team on a very small budget by basically a super fan who just got lucky thanks to his previous work. I'm enjoying it so far but yeah, I would love a toggle switch for that food pop up...
After months of playing this, completing it until all characters have been unlocked, all routes taken, this is a fantastic game. It has a lot of depth and some great move upgrades. A really tight and well thought out game and that has the strategy, gameplay and progressive levels to make this a must have. Just awesome.
So 4 gangs would require 4 playthrus to see each gangs full content? Plus all the characters to play as? Sounds like a lot of hours if it gets its hooks into you
Hey there, good review. I thought I might chime in because I've been playing the switch version and think there is one thing people should know about it. The switch version has weirdly long load times, about a minute long each time it pops up. It is a fun game to play on the go but that long of a load time is incredibly frustrating
I noticed this too (I have Switch version); but also, there was a particular moment when I played Junkyard as 2nd stage and there was this intense boss fight at the top of the junk temple and the game went into some MAJOR slowdown that resulted in me just getting completely obliterated. I know Switch isn't a powerhouse system, but a game like this really shouldn't be having these kinds of issues, even on Switch.
Thanks for another great review! Have you ever tried Fight'n Rage? It was made by this one guy, and it kicks some serious ass! The music is exceptional, the graphics look great, and the gameplay is satisfying and quite complex. I strongly suggest you give this one a go! Trust me, it's worth your time! Let it be known. I think they patched this game. The issues you mentioned seemed to have been fixed. You can toggle on/off the triple K.O. pop up, and R1 is a dash/dodge roll.
A small detail I find it weird in that Billy has blonde hair while Jimmy has dark hair, in the original, Jimmy supposed to be the blonde one, while Billy is the Brown/dark hair one
it's that on the NES version on the arcade version (the original), it's Billy who is blond and Jimmy who has black hair, I don't know why the publishers changed during the console ports, it's only after that it came from the NES version through the PC engine version until the double dragon advance reboot which had also made this choice. it's that since double dragon NEON they have gone back to their original hair colors.
I played through the game twice and I hated the game at first. Worst fighting mechanics ever I thought. I didn’t know you could run and kick. And neither did I know you could grab and throw enemies into the approaching horde behind you. Knocking them out as bowling pins. I wish the game would tell you how to pull off all the moves. I know you need to unlock tips and strategies. But I really think those should be available at the start.
Yea the Jimquisition review skewered it (unfairly I might add)....it reeked of someone who dabbled for 15 min on easy & vomited out a horrible hot take.....& didn't actually take time to learn the game. Kinda reminds me of a harsher version of IGN's SOR4 review actually....
Shout out to Marian’s mechanics. At first, I was dissapointed and confused with her gimmick, but once I found that the game rewards crowd control and that she is great for that, she became one of my favorite characters
The progression system sounds really good, I think I'm gonna give this game a try. But I'm also surprised you didn't mention the artstyle which is... A mixed bag... It's not bad but... I think the backgrounds are good... But the character pixel arts are... Too simple... I think the worst cases are the 2 main characters, the other 2 and the bosses look good... But again the Lee bros have a really awkward "artist's first character pixel art" feel and I wish they had made them look a little less simple.
Not exactly, the mayor imposed Draconian rules on the city which eventually makes you sort of realise you have become the hated villain as time goes by.
Quite a few of these smaller publishers that bring smaller/niche/indie games physical versions, and distribute them to retailers (amazon, gamestop, & bb), have popped up in recent years. Modus, Inin, Microids are just off the top of my head. Before companies that do limited physical game prints (such as LRG and SRG) came about, there were no publishers that wanted to spend money on manufacturing and distributing these smaller titles. Now that the limited print companies have shown there is still a lot of demand for physical copies of smaller games, it seems these new smaller publishing companies have taken notice that a little bit of money can be had publishing them.

I think this game is great, its fun, lots of unlockables, like the graphics and the combo system, my only complaint is how short it is
I hope they do let you toggle off that food update screen, I can see that ruining the flow.
They already did that, updated it a while ago.
Happy to report they added that defensive roll!!!
I love your videos Matt. You are an honest reviewer and entertaining. I no longer trust game sites like IGN.
What is that sick outro cover?
It's from the OST Double Dragon 2 arranged soundtrack (or ost).ruclips.net/video/aJPjSPdF0GQ/видео.htmlsi=LvViMb5Rp11NFbBN.
@@Alexcobra861 Thank you
You've also got Super and Advance to come to the Switch. Now do 8 hour F-Zero vid Matty.
Loved the review-Does anyone know the name of the song at the end of the video? It sounds amazing!
The name of the song is Dead or Alive. It is the theme of Double Dragons, vocal version from the Double Dragon II arranged OST album.
@@shinryuaku You are a lifesaver! Thanks!
No problem 😎
Shout out to Marian’s mechanics. At first, I was dissapointed and confused with her gimmick, but once I found that the game rewards crowd control and that she is great for that, she became one of my favorite characters
I now have it and beat the first 3 levels already.
YES!!! Ranzou was the best char. Hope to see him in the future
They could have thrown in that block/counter system that super double dragon had.
Word has it that a double dragon collection is coming in November
I just saw the news. Yesterday I said. I wish I would get to play GBA version along with SNES version again. So hyped!!
@@TomAnderson7same. Never had a chance to play DDA...
and I haven't played SDD in YEARS. Maybe they'll include the US and JP versions too
@@dealt Yea the Japanese version is preferable but both would be great.
You need to review the Ultimate Double Dragon fan game whenever it releases.
Ultimate Double Dragon is so good. 😊
Best double dragon ever...💯🔥
How many times are you gonna reboot the goddamn timeline of DD?
Tecmo: Yes
Technos not Tecmo but I'm sure Tecmo will reboot Tecmo Super Bowl..... Yeeeaaahhhh!!!!!!👍👍👍
This game rules! So glad it was ported to the PS5.
Loving this game! The mayor kicks ass. He was a pain in the ass in DD2. Glad he's on the good side now.
Not exactly, the mayor imposed Draconian rules on the city which eventually makes you sort of realise you have become the hated villain as time goes by.
I love this reviews for upcoming classic games. I'm a fan of Double Dragon and I will add this game in my games wishlist.
13::20 You have experience of Abobo's rear? HA HA :)
As my Brit friend says, "Chuffed!"
thats dope u can play as the villians😎🔥🔥
Ah modus games, these guys are becoming my favorite publishers.
