I’ve never heard Aerosmith sound so good live. Seen them multiple times in the late 70’s and into the early 80’s. I even bought their live album and they were a tough listen no matter how F up I was. Here on TMS they sounded great.
Weird; I'm not a big fan but they had an excellent reputation in the mid-70's and especially, in the 80's comeback for spot-on vocals. You must have been unlucky on the nights you saw them.
Aerosmith were my fav band (66 yrs old). Every time I saw them live (pre-80) they sucked. Badly. Tyler was wasted, or the sound was awful. Perry would walk off stage when he'd get upset. I never saw them able to play "Train Kept A Rollin" anything like the blistering guitar work on the studio cut, same as here. All the times I saw them late career they were fabulous, though, and did their classics perfectly.
I quit following them after Night in the ruts. Rock in a hard place was alright but I was already losing interest. Rocks and Draw the line are my two favorite albums. Never get tired of listening to those vinyls. Bootleg live was the last album I bought and that was a couple years after it was released. Their live shows in the late 70’s was awful sounding and it didn’t matter if I was down on the floor or sitting. Last time I saw them was in 80 and when the curtain fell they opened with Back in the saddle. You could even hear Steve’s vocals. Super disappointed
I love “Toys in the Attic” album & especially like ‘I’m Back in the Saddle’ song. You’re correct they sound fantastic here. I never saw them in concert, darn. Hey! Long time no see or hear! 😉 I ran away from home to the Rocky Mountains for the summer but am back in the saddle again haha! I actually did go horseback trail riding while there. Take care … fellow OKie ☺️
@KittyGrizGriz yeah that’s not a bad album. Toys in the attic kicks but Rocks is my fav. Back in the saddle is a great opening song for a concert but unfortunately the times I’ve heard it live it sucked gutter water. I gave up on Aerosmith in the 80’s. Kinda like REO and Styx at that timeframe. They became to pop for my soul. I miss them days of ten dollar or cheaper general admission tickets. Glad you enjoyed your vacation. A reset is always good way to prepare for the holidays. I haven’t been to Colorado since I was a kid. In fact I don’t even get west of the Mississippi River much often since I retired. Enjoy your Holidays and stay safe.
Sometime around this time, my dad and his friend both had the same copy of a little Richard record live. We had so much fun listening to it...This performance brings back great memories.
I had the pleasure seeing him perform with BS&T at the Irvine Spectrum in the late-90's. After the show he took the time to meet people in the audience (it's a smaller venue) and he signed my cover of their 2nd album (his debut album with the band). It was a great evening!
I saw David perform at a car lot back in the late 70s. The car dealer in my neighborhood was having a party and they hired him and gave away free hot dogs and pop. I knew who he was by the one song on the radio but that's it. He was incredible. He sang all afternoon. I remember he did a cover of The Beatles got to get you into my life.
You can’t beat any show that has Eddie Kendricks singing “keep on Truckin” one of the iconic 70s songs. If you notice in that song one by one black and white people just got up and started dancing. It’s actually very moving and emotional. That is what the 70s was all about. Bringing people together of all races, religions and nationalities together throughgreat rock ‘n’ roll.
Wow! That really was a great episode. I remember watching these back in the 70's. I'm super grateful we are finally getting whole episodes but I would love to see them come out faster than they did the first time around. Hope I live to see them all released.
This song reminds me of my BFF Leslie Fox. 04:33 Radar Love. She and I used to dress to the nines, to go to a dive bar, called Billy Bones in Pacific Beach in San Diego. We were young and foxy chicks back in the day! The bar had a DJ who played records. It was the early 1970's. I had golden blonde hair down to my knees, and sky blue eyes! My friend used to shake her tush and drive the men crazy! Everyone called us the Boopsie twins. Coz we always cruised the guys together. We were inseparable friends. Leslie loved this song (Radar Love ) and would dance wildly. I was shy but she'd get me to dance. Next thing you know the joint was jumpin'!!! Those were the good old days. RIP, Leslie. Dear friend.
Love this Episode! good line up. Love Golden Earring, the moontan album 5 songs only. 40:19 of the best 70s music. Golden Earring is on another Ep. saw that show hope to see it soon. that would be Episode 113 . Called The International Episode. line includes Electric Light Orchestra, Golden Earring, PFM Guess Who, and others...
I only saw Golden Earring once. That was in 1989 in Den Haag. I was chauffeur driven to the gig by the Road Manager (The bassists' brother), and I had dinner with the band and as it was Holland, got a bit stoned. One of my best gigs ever.
I saw this Episode 7 months ago on the membership page. What a good show. Little Richard so full of energy. Aerosmith, it was live you can see and hear that. The Aerosmith set was rough sounding. It was to me, IDK maybe just me. Kool and the Gang sounded great. Golden earring, only one song they did out of five songs from the Moontan album, Radar Love. Bummer would love to hear another song from that album, maybe another episode. Eddie Kendricks Keep on truckin' one my favorite songs.
yeah seen this one too, Golden Earring should have more songs of course....always Radar love everywhere, there is so many good songs they made ....i'm a real fan....
Train was posted as a standalone clip a while back. Most of the comments were about Joe Perry's lack of polish compared to the studio version, which was mostly due to the session players (Dick Wagner and I forget the other one). You can see from this early on in their career, Joey Kramer was the only super-talented player, and that Perry and Brad Whitford got a whole lot better later on.
Always a good time watching the Midnight Special. Turning 70 in a few months watched it in the day loved it then and now. I know performing must be hard almost everyone especially the headliner is covered in sweat. I'm sure they wished the A/C was turned up for the stage.
First time I've heard "Anytime, Babe" performed live, but by the great David Clayton Thomas. I like Thomas' version and a big fan of the Three Dog Night (studio) version sung by Chuck Negron.
Good golly, that little Richard song at 43:01 is insane and that sax solo blew off the roof - it's great he staying in the business to start getting paid!

So this is 1974 where Eddie Kendricks was solo artist at this time aswell as being part of the Temptations or had he taken a break from.the Temptations buy 1974. Also people forget how successful Little Richard was during the 1970s to a degree.
The song "Anytime Babe" (written & also done by Larry Weiss) was also done by Three Dog Night (from 1974 "Hard Labor"). Thomas version is not available on Apple iTunes.
I wondered about that. Our friend Stephanie cleared it up for me. This show was available for members only 7 months ago. They were commenting on it then.
@@KittyGrizGriz Today would be my oldest brother's 71st birthday. He died too young. Live fast, die young kind of lifestyle. On his 25th birthday, Oct. 25, 1978, I was 18 and didn't drive yet. My favorite artist, Frank Zappa, was doing a concert a good distance away so I told my brother I would treat him to the concert if he would drive us there. It was a sports arena with no seating. Not my favorite kind of venue. My brother knew nothing of Zappa so couldn't really get into it like the rest of the crowd, but I was happy to share his 25th birthday and get the ride to the gig. Happy Birthday, Bob!
@@Royalle_with_Cheese Aww that’s a great story about your brother, Bob. I enjoyed reading it & would have loved to have seen Zappa perform. I’m glad you enjoyed bonding with him. My youngest-older brother, Richard, had his albums growing up so I was exposed to him. Zappa was a genius. My oldest brother Robert, died at age 71 in September 2023 (1st sib of we 4 kids to go). My former husband, kids father-Bradd(s) 66th birthday would have been on 10/23/24. He sadly died of pancreatic liver cancer at age 55. Our son posted a memorial to him on his Facebook. 🥺 The longer we live the more people have left us, behind. I don’t like being the oldest generation and having no elders, knowing of me when I was young.
@@Royalle_with_Cheese The person on here with the 12 🔊’s must have blocked me, as I can’t read any replies to his numerous posts. Some people can’t take a joke and just laugh at themselves. Have you had anyone block you on here, too? Just curious… I don’t want to be in this club, all alone ~ haha.
This is sad the Golden Earring was lip-synched with backing tracks. Hear the "aahs" in the background when the guitarist was singing the lyrics in harmony. Some weird double-tracked guitar effect that couldn't be an echo effect. Synths, etc etc. Usually Midnight Special has been good about this.
partly was live and other things were pre-recorded. The drums and bass were definitely live, so also the lead singing part. I understand that they need to reproduce the studio sound on live (brass and backing vocals). But they were very good there !
@ClaudioAraya was comparing to the obviously live Steven Tyler vocals on Dream On. Watch the end of the song where he waves the microphone back and forth creating an audio modulation. Those are the kinds of things that indicate its live. Indeed Radar Love had none of those obvious giveaways... it was almost too perfect.
Little Richard repented befor he went in to glory. Truly one of the greatest rock n roller of all time . But he’s persona was a persona . Here dancing on a white grand in a dress , wow
Kool & TG blew Van Halen off of the stage on VH’s last tour that ended early in 2015. David Lee Roth couldn’t sing anymore but insisted the air conditioning be shut off at the BOK venue in Tulsa, OK, during the heat of summer. Because it hurt his vocal chords. We danced our butts off during Kool and left the show early, sweating and majorly disappointed. Kool is SO Funky & Groovy!
OMG THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL JUST BECAME A DAMN COMEDY WHAT DID I JUST WITNESS??? THIS WAS SNL BEFORE THERE WAS A SNL 1975. THIS EPISODE OR TAPING WAS HILARIOUS I COULD NOT STOP LAUGHING. I AM SORRY BUT LITTLE RICHARD HAS ALWAYS HAD ME LAUGHING IN HYSTERICS SINCE I WAS A CHILD. WITH THIS DUDE I ALWAYS GOT THE JOKE AND THE PUNCHLINE THE DUDES WAS PURE SHOWMANSHIP AT ITS FINEST. DID U SEE HOW HE WAS LOOKING AT THE WOLF-MAN LIKE DON’T COME FOR ME UNLESS I SEND FOR U LOOK?!!? THEN THE WOLF DECIDED TO PUSH DUDE ON THE SWING RICHARD WAS HIGHER THAN KITE GAYER THAN A CHRISTMAS TREE HILARIOUS. 😂 YEA THE ORIGINAL LYRICS WERE “TOOTIE FRUITY GOOD BOOTIE!!” THAT PRETTY MUCH TELLS U WHAT WAS UP WITH MISTER OLD RITCHIE POO. THAT DRUMMER WAS BEATING THOSE DRUMS LIKE I USED TO BACK AT THE AGE OF SEVEN. THAT IS WHEN MY PARENTS SAID ENOUGH AND GAVE THE DRUM SET TO MY ELDEST COUSIN. TOO FUNNY DID SEE DUDE BEATING THOSE DRUMS MAKE U WANT TO HOLLER GOOD GODLY MISS MOLLY’S BROTHER U NEED TO GO BACK TO DRUM SCHOOL. BAM BAM BAM BAM IS THE SOUND THE DRUMMER MAKES WHEN HE IS ON SOME BULL SH$T!! THIS WAS A GREAT SHOW. DAVID CLAYTON WAS A HELLA SINGER BACK THEN. AEROSMITH SOUNDED DECENT BUT EDDIE KENDRICKS WAS A LITTLE OFF SINGING WISE NOT STRONG VOCALLY. THEN THERE IS NOTHING LIKE KOOL IN THE GANG BEFORE JAMES TAYLOR BEFORE KOOL WENT ALL POP ON OUR A$$ES WITH THE “CELEBRATION” CRAP AND THE “CHERISH THE LOVE” WHO CARES MESS!! THEN THERE WAS “GET DOWN ON IT” MAN WHAT A DAMN AWFUL SONG BAD THEN WORSTS NOW.
fuggen Thomas was right up there with Tyler save maybe some hi falsetto but who knows maybe he even had some that? he rarely used it if he did from what I remember?
Little Richard, a pompadoured bottle of lightening, who would want to be the worker who has to change out the lightbulbs between acts? First time I've seen Golden Earing, looks like the lead singer and guitarist changed jackets, some leap by the drummer. Kool and the Gang had them up on their feet, (More Cowbell) but who could sit still to that? Can't get enuf of that funky stuff! The bad boys from Boston, at the height of their game, Nugent's 'Train Kept a Rollin" was nastier, Zep's was bluesier, but Aerosmith's was the rockinest! Eddie Kendricks, smooth as buttermilk! The man with 3 names, always evocative. Its funny Train Kept a Rollin was released as a single from this album, did ok, but Dream On was releases as a single till after Toys in the Attic produced a couple of hits, it was put out because Rocks was taking so long to get finished. Kool and the Gang's fancy footwork is dazzling. I love And When I Die! Another wonderful trip in the Way Back Machine! Thank you Midnight Special, well worth the membership!!💓💓
Chicago doesn't even belong in there. They're a great band but more "jazzy" and smooth than rock. Grand Funk was a great hard rock band. Aerosmith is to American rock as Rolling Stones are to British rock, for sure!
@@Royalle_with_Cheese Aero had 3 good albums and then the wheels fell off the train. 1st album is lame and Rocks is the last good one they made. All anybody needs from Aero is Wings, Toys, Rocks. If you dont think Chicago "rocked" for their 1st decade then you've never listened to any of their albums.
@@billiondollarbaby3276 Overall, Chicago is more jazzy with the horns than a hard rock band. I like Chicago. I'm just saying they're not a hard rock band in the same category as Aerosmith and others.
@@Royalle_with_Cheese I HATE Jazz. You're confusing JAZZ with FUSION. Just because something has Horns doesnt make it Jazz. I love AERO but Terry Kath is on a completely different level than Perry. If all you know about Chicago is TOP 40 Radio hits then you missed the boat completely. Nobody is going to classify Chicago as a HARD Rock band for sure but they are definitely a Rock band who sold over 200 Million Records Worldwide. JAZZ doesnt sell at all. You can count on your hands and Feet how many JAZZ albums got Gold/Platinum Record awards.
Great episode! Kool and the Gang, Aerosmith, Eddie Kendricks, and David Clayton-Thomas were my favorites! 😊💜

Also people forget how successful Little Richard was during the 1970s to a degree.
He left the Temptations in 1971 and passed away in 1992, a year after David Ruffin who died in 1991.
@JackCooper-ix1su Oh ok. But it looks like he was on good terms still with the rest of the Temptations in 1974 even though he left in 1971
Good episode. Oodles and oodles of neon letters in it. Where was Jesse Colin Young and Hot Tuna hiding?
I knew you'd love those letters. 🤩 Were those other artists supposed to be on this one?
@@StephanieJeanneMy guess is they were scheduled to appear and cancelled out on them and the letters were already prepped by then.
@@gregoryduncan3067 Oh! I guess I missed that.
That episode might be the record for the most letters in one episode.
@@StephanieJeanneThe letters were on both sides of Little Richard.
The song "Anytime Babe" (written & also done by Larry Weiss) was also done by Three Dog Night (from 1974 "Hard Labor"). Thomas version is not available on Apple iTunes.
L.R.....Mad as a March Hare..and a True Original.
Aerosmith Kicked ass !!!!!❤❤❤
Wow!
Prince was rocking Litte Richard’s style in the 80s peep the hair and mustache
I can't watch it early I have to wait !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These Date Stamps are so Weird?
Great show all the way around. Made me get up and boogie with them! Thank you!
I wondered about that. Our friend Stephanie cleared it up for me.
This show was available for members only 7 months ago. They were commenting on it then.

Today would be my oldest brother's 71st birthday.

Aww that’s a great story about your brother, Bob.

The person on here with the 12 🔊’s must have blocked me, as I can’t read any replies to his numerous posts. Some people can’t take a joke and just laugh at themselves. Have you had anyone block you on here, too? Just curious… I don’t want to be in this club, all alone ~ haha.
I spent my entire life thinking that Radar Love came out in 1980.
That drummer's having the time of his life.
Wow.
Красавцы!!!!!.
I wish Joe Perry’s gorgeous face wasn’t covered up by his beautiful long hair! Ooof they sound & LOOK amazing here! 😍😍😍
1 week after the President resigned. Probably wasn’t top of my mind that night as a 15 year old.
Little Richard repented befor he went in to glory. Truly one of the greatest rock n roller of all time . But he’s persona was a persona . Here dancing on a white grand in a dress , wow
David Clayton looks and sounds like the Swedish artist Roger Pontare (or maybe the other way around)
Never realised Kool.and the Gang were a good band
THEN THERE WAS “GET DOWN ON IT” MAN WHAT A DAMN AWFUL SONG BAD THEN WORSTS NOW.
if it wasn't for little richard. david bowie wouldn't exist.
Man, Aerosmith rolled this episode for me, Jack!
Dream on! Wow. Their Stairway to Heaven with better lyrics.
Richard is a great talent, but a little bit of him goes a long way.
Golden Earring seemed live, yet I heard backing parts from the record.
What was the drummer of Kool and the Gangs name? Joey Kramer also killing it in this episode!! 🥁🥁
fuggen Thomas was right up there with Tyler save maybe some hi falsetto but who knows maybe he even had some that? he rarely used it if he did from what I remember?
LITTLE RICHARD: “And you know what? Some of that American rock from ORE ALLEN SMITH ????”
Aerosmith is the Greatest American rock band ever, sorry beach boys and sorry grand funk and sorry chicago
@@billiondollarbaby3276
Overall, Chicago is more jazzy with the horns than a hard rock band.
@@billiondollarbaby3276
Jazzy is not definitive Jazz.
I said I like Chicago.
I just don't put them in the category of Hard Rock.
What happened to the AUDIO during Eddie Kendricks 😢😢😢😢😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮?????????
Does anyone know who the members of Little Richards band were at this time? Particularly the drummer!
