Heavy Duty Upgrades For My Lifted 4X4 GMC Safari - Van Rebuild Episode 1

  • After much use, my van is in need of some serious love. First things first the brakes are toast, so I replaced them with some upgrades. I replaced my origls with some Powerstop brand pads and rotors. I went with the Z36 carbon fibre ceramic pads, which are for extreme use and towing. I honestly think I had the same stuff in here before, but something led to premature failure. I dont think I greased the pins well enough, or I have anothe problem, but the brakes were stuck on, and totally roasted my pads. It also ruined my brake rotors, so I replaced them with new powerstop cross drilled and slotted rotors. For good measure, I also replaced the calipers themselves with some Cardone brand remanufactued ones. All these parts can be found at www.rockauto.com, that's what I use almost exclusively(not a sponsor). I also wanted to replace my brake lines, but the raybestos ones I ordered didn't fit right, so I will be reordering a new set of sunsong ones to install later. I read on an asto safari Facebook group that thebrake hose can fail internally, which leads to them not being able to release pressure and therefore squeezing the life out of my brakes. After the front brakes, I replaced my rear leaf springs with some heavy duty ones that I bought off Facebook Marketplace. I don't know much about them, but my old springs were clapped out, and these are substantially better. I also had to replace my rear shocks with some KYB Mono max ones. I originally built this van with monroe spring assisted shocks, so those weren't going to work with the new heavy duty springs. In hindsight, it would have been wise to start with heavy duty springs, soI didn't haveto do both of these things twice. I also did a little bit of digging around and my malfunction interior fridge and/or battery problem, and fixed a couple of other little things while I was at it. Van still needs plenty of attention, so there will be a few more rebuild videos coming out before we can get out and start living the vanlife again. There's no shame in being down, as long as you rise back up.

Hey bud, you may want to consider adding rotor shims. It may help with rotor runout.

Nice work, think your gonna like the ride much better with the heavier springs. Don't sweat the bees, they have no interest in f ing with you, they just go about their business they'll only bite as a last ditch effort cuz it'll kill them anyways, hornets and wasps on the other hand are pricks, pretty sure their territorial and defend their space.

I agree, this thing is going to feel so much better. Last summer I had the canoe on the roof, bike on the back, and so much stuff inside, those old springs definitely weren't up to those kind of loads.
Last year I got stung twice in a week by hornets or something, it sucked. They were building a nest under the LED bulbs in a pot light, they were aggressive. Twice I got too close to that pot light and they attacked me, it was pretty crazy. These ones buzzed over me for a couple hours without even bothering me, it was nice.

Dude. I just dropped the subframe on mine to swap out the engine in my driveway. I live on one heck of a hill. Super sketchy, life only flashed before my eyes once. But it’s out. Thanks for inspiring me to do it myself. Cheers!

That's awesome! I'm glad I could help inspire. Doing that job on a hill definitely does sound sketchy though. Be safe and good luck!
