Do I have to forgive?

  • Forgiveness and reconciliation is generally encouraged in the Quran, because without it there is ongoing enmity and the world will be filled with heartlessness and constant pain. But is it an obligation upon a victim to accept the damage and forgive, or is the obligation on the perpetrator to seek the victim’s forgiveness? What does Islam really say?

Forgiveness is not recommended in every condition. You need to analyze your condition which is unique to everyone & then forgive. Coz if u go on freely doing so it could be fatal.
    So be extremely careful.

@@ursschnatterfleck6019I don't know where OP is from but these things are very difficult in countries like India (I'm an Indian) even if the resources are available. The default opinion, even if people know that a woman is suffering is that the woman is supposed to deal with it with patience. And a little help (if even that) is usually provided for the woman. It's very common. I personally know so many women in my family who are being mentally abused by their husbands or in-laws. I know a woman who's abusing her husband. It's cultural. I hope it changes.

That doesn't sounds like a sincere repentance.
But what matters is not him, but you. Choose what is best for your heart and well being.
Someone owed me money too, and I can only forgive him if he pay up what he owed. Otherwise, I erase him from my mind and trust that Allah will deal with him to avoid being stressed.

This is terrifying because what if the people you've hurt choose not to forgive you but you can't reach them anymore to apologize for what you've done? what then? What if you repented and regretted hurting someone and asked for Allah's forgiveness, but can't ask for the person's forgiveness? Especially if you've unknowingly wronged someone, either thinking you were doing the RIGHT thing or thinking there was nothing harmful in it? What then?

Then show Allah that you are trying. Sincerely show Him deep remorse for your wrong doing. Keep putting effort that you are trying to make it upto the person you wrong and inshaAllah, Allah SWT will compensate that person without taking away anything from you. As long as you sincerely try. Because it's all about your intention and the state of your heart. Allah might look at you and say at least you tried and show you mercy. Allah knows best. But you keep trying your best to make it upto them. And Allah might even change their heart and guide their heart to forgiving you.

Sheikh, thank you so much for your work, for all the effort you put in your videos and speeches. I learned a lot about Islam from you. There is so much I still have to learn, so Allah wills. If my oppressors never get punished in this life and if there's never justice for me in this life, then theoretically their good deeds, so Allah wills, are going to be transferred to me after their and my death - what if the oppressors didn't do anything good in their lives? Would there be a replacement for that? What if the oppressors are not Muslims?
