    waiting for waves has never been a "con" for me. i always have my most peaceful moments while waiting in the lineup. I have waited for 30 minutes or more, just me and the ocean, feeling the energy of the water, wondering what's beneath you...to me it's incredibly peaceful and spiritual in a way. i believe this is what makes a true surfer, a connection with and love of just being in the ocean no matter what. :)

    Tip you are free to ignore: on small days like the one in the video practice paddling up and down the beach, 20-30 strokes then do a 180 like you are turning for a wave, then another 20-30 strokes, etc., etc. Once your surfing starts to improve, you will quickly notice that on bigger days paddling speed and paddling endurance are important. Take advantage, and practice when you can.

    It was great seeing your experience as a beginner. The very first time I tried surfing I was really overwhelmed with how much paddling I had to do and then when I finally got my first wave it was pretty underwhelming. I had it built up in my mind that catching waves would be the best thing in the world because that's how my wife described it to me, and I was just really let down. The waves I was catching weren't as fast as I thought they would be and didn't last nearly as long. It wasn't until my second time trying surfing that I really fell in love with it. That time it was a totally different beach. I first tried in a bay with rocks & coral and the second time was on a long stretch of sand beach, a much more beginner friendly beach with longer waves. There I could stand and walk to the waves if I ever got tired of paddling and there were just so many factors that made that expereince better. Plus, I think my mindset had changed at that point. I knew that it was going to be difficult and I put my expectations lower for catching thrilling waves. Instead I just focused on stading up as long as I could.

    I like that she does break down every part of trying to get up off the floor in your living room and gives you some sort of guidance, but screw all that, you dont wanna think about anything longer than a second after using your hands to get up. Just knowing where to position yourself to catch the wave is the most important and then just try standing, fall, get back up, repeat.

    As an intermediate surfer, this is a surprisingly good summary of the life of a beginner surfer, well done!
    Most sessions are indeed hours of work for only seconds of actually standing on the board. Learning is slow for this reason, you get so little time actually surfing, and the slow progress can (will) be frustrating soemtimes. So I totally get how surfing is not for everyone, but for some, all the preparations are worth the thrill of catching the wave of your life, whether that be to barely get your feet on the baord on 1 foot white water, or pulling into a double overhead barrel.

  • @williamglass342
    @williamglass342 2 года назад +8

    More important than anything relating to popping up is not pushing up from your elbows. You will torpedo almost every time. Many beginners do this over and over again and never notice their mistake because all they notice is the Wipeout it causes. Basically, a lot of people instinctual grip the board way to high up and put their elbows down into the board, which gives you some stability at first, but once you start to transfer into the stand up, the center of mast shifts way forward and you eat it.
    Also, you can touch up the wax on your board in the water. Stick a chunk in your sleeve

  • @silverhiver
    @silverhiver 2 года назад +41

    Those "professional people" that make fun of you for putting wax on your foamie probably didn't start on one and don't appreciate the slippage potential of an average adult on a slick deck. Wax is for all boards. Also your instructor popped up with a "defensive" stance that has nothing to do with surfing, I would watch some pop up videos on YT and learn to do it properly, without using your knees. Surfing is hard enough without spending months correcting muscle memory.

    Surfing is all about the teacher you have. My first time surfing this week was super easy because I had a good mentor. I caught the first wave of the day after 10 minutes of practicing getting up on the beach. I would recommend to learn not to get on your knees first because it can throw off your balance and is way too slow. Put your hands closer to your rib cage and push up to your back foot then swing your front around if that makes sense.

    New surfers always go straight which is not exactly "surfing" I'll never forget the first time I went down the line on a wave. I was 8 years old and I've been surfing ever since. When I teach surf lessons that's my main point not to go straight. The energy of a wave is on the face not the white water.

    It's really nice that you decided to make a video about this. I started surfing two days ago and I quickly realised it's so different from the clips I saw. Where I surf good waves are quite frequent, but that also means they are strong and unfriendly so I got knocked over so many times. Even though it's summertime the water is still cold, and the saltwater goes into my eyes and nostrils which is a terrible experience. I also had no idea how to turn around in front of a wave and I did not go to surfing schools so I had to learn from experienced surfers nearby, but luckily there's a lot of them. One thing I learned yesterday is that when crossing frequent, strong, whitewater waves you need to run all the way into the water and push the board forward before you hop on. That gives you more velocity and makes it easier to paddle along.

    A few things to remember, the setup is easy if you surf everyday (or close to it) and if you ride a shortboard, you don't need to put the roof racks on
    I agree with the second point, surfing is hard but you need to remember to not get down about it, just have fun
    If you surf in summer or have a good sealed steamer in winter, it isn't too cold
    If you go to the right spot in a short period swell you don't have to wait for waves, there will constantly be waves coming through.
    And I also agree with the 5th point you don't have any control over the ocean but if you learn to understand it, you can predict it without too much of a struggle

  • @twitchcropstv
    @twitchcropstv 2 года назад +8

    I started surfing on a foam SUP board. A larger board is a lot easier to learn on since it's more stable and it allows you to catch smaller waves. Larger boards are definitely harder to turn though, and SUP boards generally only have one fin which makes sharp turning even more difficult, but you likely won't be shredding as a beginner anyway. I think it's a great option for anyone who wants to try surfing and potentially SUP boarding as well.
    Also, you don't need to use the paddle when you surf. Most videos of people surfing on them use the paddle because you can drag it for more control and agility, but that's a pro move for riding larger waves. It's much harder to catch average waves that way... I've tried 😂

    when catching a wave look where you want to go on the wave not where your actually going because that's where you will fall off and hit the water because your head is leading you. looking where you want to go creates more of a feel of the board under you and will advance your surf ability. also helps if you live at the beach and surf a lot and I mean a lot. but like riding a bike it's hard to unlearn. and very rewarding nothing cleans the soul like a morning session that goes for hours.

    If you're going to surf in such shallow conditions, I would begin with a boogie board. You can stand in waist deep water where the waves are breaking, or even in a little further, then push yourself onto the wave and ride it. I doubt you will be able to stand up because the board and waves are so small, but you will be "surfing" the wave. You can do it with a large foamie like yours, but it's more awkward with such a big board because you'd be jumping on from the side. Just ride the wave in on your stomach and feel what it's like to plane along the surface of the wave. That is surfing.
    Of course when go out to bigger waves and in a depth where you can't touch bottom, you'll have to paddle into the waves, so you'll have to develop a good stroke. A good crawl stroke will do. You have to learn to read the waves and where they stand up and break, but you should have learned that from boogie boarding.
    Your teacher should have gone over where to position yourself on the board. You were too far forward on the one where you dug the nose. Most beginners, however, lie too far back and create a lot of drag on the tail, and the wave passes underneath them. You need to have the board be as flat as possible in the water, which usually means the nose is maybe just one or two inches out of the water. You will be able to go faster. When you see a wave that looks like it's going to stand up and break where you are, line yourself up on the board (use a marker or line yourself up with logo to make sure you're not too far forward or back) and paddle for it.
    There's a whole lot of crap on the internet on how to paddle, but if you have a decent crawl,, that's good enough. As far as special techniques, just do what's comfortable for you. Doesn't have to be extra long or extra deep, but something you can do rhythmically and comfortably for a good 10-15 strokes or so at a time. You might need two or three easy strokes to go laterally across the waves, another three or four to get into position either outside or inside, then another three or four or five strokes of vigorous paddling to actually catch the wave. If it looks like you're going to have to work harder than that, than don't bother and look for the next wave. You can't catch them all and you'll tire yourself out chasing them if you try for everything that comes near (plus you'll p-ss off other surfers who ARE in proper position for the wave already. Nothing worse than a newbie dropping in on your wave).
    And when your arms and shoulders are so tired you can't keep a rhythm out there, it's time to quit. You'll never get your energy back for that session, and you risk injury, especially to your shoulders. A torn or worn-out rotator cuff is extremely common among surfers.
    When you catch the wave, you'll feel the board planing like on the boogie board. Then do a push up and hop up to your feet ASAP, aligning your feet along the centerline of the board You can do the knee thing if you want, but it's not necessary. I used a one-knee pushup style for about a day, then someone told me to just hop up all the way, and it was easy. You'll fall the first few times, but your sense of balance and your agility are much better when you stand up all the way. Even if you're a bit off on your popup, it's easy to correct. Since the board is planing, it will be stable enough for you to catch your balance and adjust your feet to the centerline.
    I boogie boarded for decades before taking up surfing at age 51. I'm 66 now and surf 4-6 footers easily on a 8'9" longboard. Never had a lesson in my life.

      It's the thing I would be looking forward to the most 😂. Still not sure if I should try surfing, I'm from middle Europe so it would be quite a journey and I'm afraid of not getting it in like 4, 5 weeks. I would want to at least get good enough for the paddling out and catching waves experience. Don't want to be stuck in the white water as shown in nearly every beginner's video cuz it looks like so much fun to be in an actual lineup. Is that realistic at all? 😮
      I'm a pretty boring person. I wouldn't party, or do sightseeing, I'd be sleeping, doing yoga and be in the water for 4 weeks straight. 😅

    nooo the knees! it can take away the momentum when surfing. also when getting out past the surf there are three things you can do that make it super easy! 1: duck diving (you cant do this with boards like wavestorm though or any foam board) 2: turtling or 3: just pushing down on the front and pushing yourself up so the wave goes under you and above the board (this only works for more of foam boards and smaller waves)

    It’s sometimes better to surf with people who have a higher skillets than yourself. By doing this it will teach you though visual learning the mechanics and techniques of movement in surfing. Not to mention how to read waves where to sit in the ocean. Knowing where to catch a wave almost is important as how to pop ride the wave. Last you keep digging your nose in the video. Sit back on your board and paddle into the wave at an angle. Not head on. Especially on slow waves!

    Im surprised she told you to get on your knees, when riding "smaller" waves the actual ride time is very short so you want to minimize the time it takes for you to get on your feet. A simple pop up from the belly to your feet will do but as with everyhting it takes practise and placement of hands is key:) Also if youre finding it hard to paddle out sometimes its easier to go in through the side where it may be more calm, that way your not going head on where the waves are. Kinda hard too see how big the waves are but learning to dive under the waves with your board will save alot of energy and time.

    I think surfing is a lot different than what most expect. I am a beginner myself and am dealing with a lot of stuff that feel like turn offs. Like i went to France hoping there 'd be cleaner waves ideal for beginners. Here in Belgium it's often storm surf. But once arriving in France there were huge sets coming in and so huge waves you try to take. It's scary as hell and best not try this without some good surfer buddies. It's a lot of fun traveling with others, sharing the ocean and talking about it as you wait for waves.
    To me the biggest turn off is the raw fear you have to combat if you mostly have storm waves to deal with or often huge surf. It doesn't come as you want it and it makes me appreciate smaller days when you actually have time to think things thru and execute.

I’m a surf coach and there’s absolutely no need to use the knee pop up at all if you are fit. Unlike those 2 terrains, water rebounds due to the buoyant forces, take notice of that in your surfing. Hidden torque ops everywhere. Last (2) since you riding a LOG: make sure to 'dance' all over your board and force switch-riding early on [just keep the leash on the same foot, it's fine 🤙couple attempts per session] It may seem frustrating; however, when you progress a little, your regular stance gets fast-tracked.
