I'm trading in my 2016 Kindle towards the Kindle Colorsoft as colour really matters to me. I've been using the Kobo Libra Colour and being able to highlight in different colours has enabled me to interact with the prose more, e.g. I use yellow for quotes; pink for character insights, blue for plot points; and green (or on Kindle, orange) for theme or motifs. I'm a copyeditor so perhaps these things matter to me more than most. But I've got 950 Kindle books, so I can't wait for the Colorsoft to arrive to start reading them.
I hope you love it! Are you still going to use your Kobo? Or maybe the better question is will these ereaders have different purposes like maybe one is for work and the other is for fun?
I agree the Scribe should have color at the price point. As Kindle Oasis user, a color Oasis would have tempted me to consider color. I enjoy reading in all formats but for e-reading, I like the size of the Oasis for longer reading sessions
Yes! The original white kindle with buttons was the best!!! I loved being able to touch the screen without turning pages. I can't hold my kindle like a book anymore. I really miss it and they need to bring it back.
I can't find a place to leave suggestions! I posted a "general kindle question" about it on the community board but haven't gotten any feedback as of yet 😢
I really love my 12th gen Kindle Paperwhite Signature. Much faster than any Kindle I've owned before. But I do wish I had something in color, just to see book cover art and a few study Bibles I have that used color pics, charts, etc.
When I found out that Amazon was discontinuing the Oasis, my favorite reading device, I went down the rabbit hole of alternative e-readers for when my Oasis eventually, hopefully not for a long time, bites it. This led me to Boox which then led me to the Palma. While I don't think it would be my go to at home, I'm going to start commuting on a train and subway, Mon-Fri., for work. I really like the idea of pulling a Palma out of my pocket and reading (like you said, looks like a phone) vs. pulling a kindle out. It's a little pricey but I'm like so close to pulling the trigger.
@ I didn’t. After doing some research enough people were complaining about the shoddiness of the build of their palma, it not lasting very long before starting to break on them, I got gun shy about spending that much money on something that doesn’t have the build quality /consistency of a kindle. Still think the idea is great just not going to spend 250 to roll the dice. For now it’s been kindle on the train phone on the subway.
When I saw what Kindle was coming out with for a color kindle I was so disappointed. I was really hoping they would go the way Kobo did with their Kobo Libra Colour. Because of this I ordered the Kobo Libra Color and got it a few days ago. I LOVE it. It's a great device... What I miss is the Kindle library and KU plus the ease finding new books because the recommendations in Kindle are based on my past 15 years of reading. What I really wish is that Amazon would let go of the stranglehold they have on content. Their exclusivity clause on KU authors and books makes it so hard for other sellers to build their libraries and also prevents authors from making the most money they possibly can.
I’ve been debating upgrading to a kindle scribe because the battery in my oasis is a tragedy. I am only considering it, because I had a 2 yr warranty and they no longer make the oasis. 😢 I think you just saved me so much trouble be showing your Bigme reader with the buttons! As long as it has auto orientation settings when you change hands I am sold! Losing the buttons has been the biggest stumbling block in replacing my oasis.
I have a Remarkable and mostly use it for work (analyst at a gov’t agency). I’ll occasionally use it to mark up reports/studies/notices from the federal register or new CFRs but it generally doesn’t really hold up as an e-reader. It mostly functions as a notebook and sketch pad in less-than-enthralling meetings.
I am eagerly awaiting my Kindle Colorsoft. I started with a Nook Color tablet way back when it came out in 2010. I love reading comics/manga, so color will be a huge bonus. Sadly Nook devices just have not kept up with the times compared to other ebook readers. A lot of the ebooks I own are already on Nook's ecosystem, and Kindle's don't play nice with the Nook reading app. I am too broke to afford the other Android based devices at the moment, but I would totally love that Boox Palma I bet so I could use them both! Maybe that'll be my next big purchase.
I get my Colorsoft later today I can't wait and plus I have a graphic novel installed to my account from a book i read 10yrs ago which turned into a graphic novel so I'm excited for that.
Maybe they’ll have a color Palma in a few generations. I know Bigme already makes a color device that’s similar in size to the Palma. One day you’ll be able to have your nook and your kindle books all on one device!
Thank you for this video, I found it super useful. I have the Boox Palma and a Kindle Oasis. I LOVE my Oasis and will use it until it dies. I was disappointed to see Amazon has discontinued the Oasis so will likely move away from their devices now. The Palma is amazing and I am so impressed by these Android based e-ink devices. I don't think I can go back to being locked into any one ecosystem. My next device will probably be a Boox Color Go or a Leaf just waiting for the new year sales because poverty 😂
I'm so glad you found this helpful! I agree (obviously) that these android devices are just better! I saw they have a new Palma so I'm sure there will be updates to the Boox lineup in the next year or so. When you're ready for your next upgrade it will probably be to something even better than what's out there now.
@@NerdyNurseReads Yes, mine is the newer Palma and I love it. Hopefully we get even better tech in these type of devices because the Android version they run is a little old and some security patches are only supported for the next year or two but I am sure they will sort all that especially as these devices get more popular. Here's to even better, faster and (hopefully cheaper) ereaders to come 🎉
I’m not much of a reader anymore because I hardly have the time. Before getting a Kindle, I'm trying out an Amazon tablet that has the Kindle app. If I manage to finish a book, I’ll invest in one of the new Kindles. However, I still haven't been able to finish a book yet. 😞 Also, I am that person that needs color in their cover, even for e-readers. It brings me joy. So I was waiting for them to come up with color version of kindles hehe.
That's how I felt on the very first Kindle I bought in 2012 I said I wish this was in Kindle. Seeing a book cover in black and white didn't give me joy for what I was reading.
Thank you for bringing the Bigme device to my attention. I have been a kobo e-reader user for soooo long. But it does bother me that if I find an e- book through Scribd I have to read it on my phone or tablet. ☹️ so when the time comes to upgrade I will definitely be looking to android based devices for that reason. Loved this comprehensive comparison that you have done!!
I believe Boox also makes a device like the Bigme7 blah blah blah but it might be on the most expensive end of the spectrum. BUT it looks like Boox is rolling out updated devices right now so I’d keep an eye out to see what new android devices pop up for the holidays
Hi great comparison I originally had just the basic kindle to try see if I liked many years ago loved it except in the dark lol so then I got a paper white well worth the extra . I also read manga and comics so was going to get the kindle colour as like you I use screens all day so reading on my iPad can get tiring ,but I read so many bad reviews I thought I’ll give the kobo Libra colour ago, that was till I saw the bigme that you have, I was a bit weary of ordering it as I hadn’t really heard of them but I liked the idea of having kindle ,kobo etc all on one device .after watching you video I Carnot wait now for it to come Wednesday. I went for the one with the pen as I have one on my iPad and as it wasn’t much more expensive I thought it might come in handy.
I hope you enjoy your Bigme, it’s not a perfect device but I love it! Having all my book stuff (Amazon, kobo, hoopla, etc.) in one place is so great! I feel like I get more out of my reading device now.
i just upgraded to the kindle light from my 2015 regular kindle. the light in my truck was crap and wanted one with the backlight. I enjoy it, it does what i want it to. I admit i am interested in the new Colorlight, plus...HA FIRST
I get it, new devices are always tempting (that's how I ended up with so many!) but I think if they'd made the scribe color I would have considered it but get a new kindle kindle just for color doesn't make sense to me. I need a little more to entice me to part with my cash.
Glad to know u enjoy being a kindle girl. Afraid I’m a little too old and set in my ways to be a kindle boy plus I like the feel and smell of new books. But have to admit some of those gadgets look really cool! Be well.⚛️❤
Oooo that depends on what is more important for you: portability and being able to read more covertly or buttons and color? If the former - Palma but if the later I’d so color go
@@NerdyNurseReads I’m definitely the former! I did end up watching your entire video and was made aware of the bigme, but from customer reviews, it looks like I may be better off with the boox, but thank you for the information! 🫶🏾
Lolol not your hoard of e-readers. I quite enjoy my Kindle Oasis and won't be replacing it any time soon, I had one of those OG ones with buttons to advance and reverse pages....the stickers I had for it were AWESOME.
"There's never going to be a full replacement for reading a physical book ..." Applause! Standing Ovation!! Sweatshirts and t-shirts on sale in the lobby!!!
I"m buying ebooks now mosstly, with some exceptions, to save space and weight. Moving books is such a pain. But I also have ruined many books by getting them wet, which never fails to make me sad. Now that I'm getting old, I want to be able to control font size and lighting. Loved reading books for over half a century, but I am largely moving on. There will always be some exceptions though.
@@chessic4 Books are definitely heavy, and storage and display are always a problem. I’ve built many book cases over the years-and become pretty proficient at it, dressing them up with crown moulding and various other bits of wood trim, not to mention painting and staining them in various finishes-but they’re pretty heavy to tote upstairs from my basement or garage workshop, plus you have to ensure they’re sitting level on the floor, or even leaning backwards just the teeniest tad, lest they topple forward. There’s also the fact that dust and spiders like to hide behind them, and they take up a lot of wall space that could be used for other things. So, I can definitely see the advantages of e-books, and may well have to consider them as an option one day.
OMG I completely forgot about the light you could buy for the kindle with the keyboard I actually had that at one time lol. I unfortunately can't find it anywhere since I moved 3 times.
A very kind commenter told me I can replace the battery and bring it back to life. I don’t know if I’m brave enough to do it but I’m thinking about it. Maybe your keyboard kindle will materialize one day.
Very interesting 😊 I quite fancy getting a scribe due to older eyes but it price and weight that putting me off a little but probably a lot lighter than a traditional hardback
It can get heavy if you’re reading for a long time. I have stand and a remote for it which helps. I also have a little lap size holder that I prop it up on if I don’t want to whip out the whole big stand and everything. But yah the weight is definitely a negative
@@NerdyNurseReads I just weighed a hardback novel on kitchen scales and it’s 685 grams compared to scribe that’s 420 ish so I ordered cheapest base version of 2022 scribe this evening 😊
I thought they were going to make all the changes on the Scribe you mentioned and I was sssoo excited! but man the disappointment I felt with their latest releases. my heart literally broke (so dramatic but true)
the new kindle scribe feature is it makes a postit- and the text moves around that post it,so it does change it which means you can still see the words, and it suppose to stay anchored to that position. i think between that and the new margins feature it'll be great for my style of annotations, so ive finally decided to get the scribe. Im actualky very glad they didnt put it in color - because then i wouldnt have gotten it. Color ereaders are a drop in the sharpness in the screen (150ppi vs 300ppi for others), and theyre not as vibrant colors as phsyical or on my computer - the only reason id Need color is for comics and i wouldnt enjoy reading them on a scribe with less visual quality is still a drain tha prevents reading vs physical.
You make a good point about the sharpness with color eink. It looks like this new color kindle's screen is more impressive than my Bigme 7 blah blah blah (but I haven't seen it in person so I can't compare). It will be interesting to see how the technology improves over the next couple of years. I still think color on the scribe would make it perfect for students. Maybe they'll add it down the line when the technology is better?? I don't hate the post it feature per se. It's definitely an improvement on the current annotation system. For me, I like to write all over my books (and pdfs) when I'm annotating so I'd love anything that mimics that. I hope you love your new scribe. I think it's a great device (even if it's not perfect imo yet).
Amazon: a.co/d/aCtjExS I also got a handle bc I like them and the popsocket I had wouldn’t stick to the case. This one stuck with some careful surface preparation and some firm pressure a.co/d/30ke6NA
I hope you love the new signature! I do love that they’re making all this special color ones. I think there being a lavender one a few years back. So pretty.
@@NerdyNurseReads Agreed! I got the green one… don’t remember what color they call it… I find I have been using my Kobo more… but the new Signature is super fast and the text is clear and easy to read… very happy with it! Thanks for the videos!
Oh boy it’s a process but it can be done. You’d need to go into you library on the computer and download your kindle books then you’ll need a program that can strip the DRM off them and leave you with an epub (or you can convert them with same program to mobi or whatever file you need) and then you can transfer those to the kobo but I think you need to do that via a direct transfer with a cable. There are tons of videos on RUclips that can walk you through the process and show you the program you can use (I have calibre I don’t know if there are others)
This one of the first how to video that comes up ruclips.net/video/QGs0AA6Sh74/видео.htmlsi=mzrWkW99mCgWZix- but there are so many if this one isn’t helpful
@@NerdyNurseReads thanks for the response. Looks like after converting everything you would have to subsist off of non-amazon ebook stores. Can any of them match the Kindle store for the selection and pricing? It seems like such a commitment lol
for me its the new scribe, and kobo. scribe is mainly for uni, because i have some books in the ecosystem; and a way to try a book before refunding it... to then get on kobo. i personally think kobo is the way, but also i think for me the scribe is good due to its storage. i just hope that kobo will give more storage, and a option to add storage via sd card.
Murdle books not being made available as a digital book that's write-on friendly is actually a crime! 😂 I do have a book with sudoku. If you're willing to find puzzles online to get as pdf downloads and have access to a pdf editing program, you could, in theory, build your own pdf book of puzzles instead of relying on their options. But I'm disappointed in the options of pre-made stuff that's available. As someone who does use the notebooks a lot, they have improved quality of life for those immensely. I made a whole reading journal and can now circle copy and paste the layout to make more pages. I was so convinced the new scribe was color so when I realized they bumped the 16gb up to the price of the old 64gb scribe I was less than impressed. Kind of hoping it fails so they go back and make a color scribe. 😂 The Boox Palma is awesome and I know it's expensive but I took it with me on vacation and saved so much room, didn't even need to remove it at some security checkpoints for TSA. Love it, wouldn't trade it for anything.
@@NerdyNurseReads i love mine cause reading manga is so beautiful on it, but I agree they could do more with the note taking part and i see some hope with the new feature announced that are coming in an update.
@@NerdyNurseReads that was confirmed by amazon itself! the new options are coming since the new scribe is actually still a first gen scribe, nothing cahnged internally, looks like just a small aesthetic refresh
So you can get KU on a boox device? I have a double hand injury right now so I’ve been exclusively reading on my kobo which I’ve had since 2020. It’s only recently gotten slower and I’ve been wanting access to KU cause there’s lots of stuff I just can’t get from the library I want access to so I was going to get a paperwhite on Black Friday, but since I heard you can’t even transfer books onto it, I’ve been trying to see if I could find an alternative
On the android devices you can have the kobo app and read the books you have there and the kindle app which would give you access to KU. You may be able to access all your kobo books and transfer them to the kindle but it will be a multi step process. If you’re not tech savy or interested in spending all the time I’d say find an android based device that you like and get that one. You’ll get the best kobo and kindle that way.
I need to get a new Kindle. My 2021 paperwhite has 4.72 GB of space left, but no matter what I load onto it, be it a sideloaded book, or one from Amazon, it freezes. As much as I love it, I am tea close to throwing it against the nearest wall in utter frustration. I have 4 355 books loaded onto it, but like I said, it still has 4.72 GB of space left, so it shouldn't be freezing like this. 😞
Ooo that's a frustrating place to be. A new ereader is definitely needed. If you have that many books maybe the answer is something you can add storage to like an android reader. The two I have allow you to add an additional 128 gigs with a microSD. I'm scrolling Amazon and it looks like (I could be wrong) the scribe has the most room at 64 gigs. Either way, do what makes you happy!
I can only get kindles in South Africa. The others aren't available, unless you import them. Then they are double the price of the Kindle, which is around 4K here. The new kindles are not available here yet. I'm waiting not so patiently for them to be released here.
I have this issue currently with my Oasis. As a workaround you can remove the downloads on any books you haven't opened in the past 3, 6 or 12 months (you can choose which option). The files still exist in the cloud (they just aren't saved to your device) and you can just download them when you need them. This has saved my Oasis which was basically freezing every day. Hopefully this tides you over until you can get the new Kindles in South Africa 🤞🏾
Have you tried to restart it (by keeping the button pressed for about 30 seconds) or reset it? I have an ancient Kindle Paperwhite that I got in 2013... Back then, they had only 2 Gb of memory, and actually only about 1.2 Gb was available to the user (the rest was for the operating system) . Of course I can't keep anymore all my books on it as I have too many, so I keep them when I want to have them accessible, and delete them when I know I won't need them for a while. I usually keep around 120 Mb of free memory on my Kindle and it's enough to read normal books without freezing. I think yours has something wrong, I suggest you to contact the Amazon assistance before deciding to change it. I know it's also possible to reset it to initial conditions (like brand-new), it will wipe out all its memory but if all your ebooks are in the Amazon Cloud that won't be a problem, you'll get them back again automatically. (If somebody is wondering why I'm not changing my Kindle with a model with more memory, it's because it was a present from my children, so I love it very much. Besides, it still works perfectly)
@@rachelmatthews8489 my problem is that about 60% of my books are side loaded via the cable that came with my Kindle. Therefore they don't sync to the cloud. You actually get a message to that effect. So, if I were to delete alot of my books, I would not be able to retrieve them as I no longer have a pc.
If I ever get the chance to try them I will review them but more ereaders aren’t in the budget ☹️ I wish there was somewhere I could go to play with all the available eink devices
So then do the Boox and Bigme devices allow notes to be saved on borrowed books? The Kobo not having that seems like a major flaw, especially since getting an e-reader is an attempt to use the library more for me.
By all means keep your devices pristine, to each their own. But the stickers are on the case not the device except for the clear cases which are used to sandwich the stickers between the device and the case. They’re not stuck on so I can swap those out which is why I prefer a clear case. But even if they were stuck on, idc bc I like them. Thx for watching tho 💜

Dude I'm not gonna lie I have books on Google Books I would like to read and that device was tempting but I went with the colorsoft.
Lolol not your hoard of e-readers. I quite enjoy my Kindle Oasis and won't be replacing it any time soon, I had one of those OG ones with buttons to advance and reverse pages....the stickers I had for it were AWESOME.
Maybe Amazon needs a retro kindle release
@ I’d be here for it if probably get it 🙈 mine died with that same screen and was unchargeable it was sad
@ apparently we can replace the battery but I’m scared d
@ yeah I’m not messing around with some 20 year old expired battery. Thanks though 💀🤣🤣🤣
U can buy a new battery for your keyboard kindle… I put at least two new batteries in mine over the years
I have no idea how to do this but you have my attention!
"There's never going to be a full replacement for reading a physical book ..." Applause! Standing Ovation!! Sweatshirts and t-shirts on sale in the lobby!!!
ereaders are great tools but nothing can replace a book book.
@@NerdyNurseReads And a book-book to you, too! Nothing can replace a NerdyNurse Booktuber with a great bedside manner!
Ha ha
OMG I completely forgot about the light you could buy for the kindle with the keyboard I actually had that at one time lol. I unfortunately can't find it anywhere since I moved 3 times.
A very kind commenter told me I can replace the battery and bring it back to life. I don’t know if I’m brave enough to do it but I’m thinking about it. Maybe your keyboard kindle will materialize one day.
Kindle wasn't the first e ink reader. It was Sony back in 2007 or whereabouts. I had a couple of them before they stopped producing them
OOO interesting! I didn't know this, thank you for sharing.
@@lisadefries6718 oooo that’s really good to know!!! I hope you love your scribe!!!!
I thought they were going to make all the changes on the Scribe you mentioned and I was sssoo excited! but man the disappointment I felt with their latest releases. my heart literally broke (so dramatic but true)
Maybe they’ll give us what we were wanting in the next update
@@NerdyNurseReads fingers crossed
is that the same with Kobo? do we just buy the license to the books?
I believe this is how most digital items work.
the new kindle scribe feature is it makes a postit- and the text moves around that post it,so it does change it which means you can still see the words, and it suppose to stay anchored to that position. i think between that and the new margins feature it'll be great for my style of annotations, so ive finally decided to get the scribe.
Where did you get your case for your bigme?
Amazon: a.co/d/aCtjExS I also got a handle bc I like them and the popsocket I had wouldn’t stick to the case. This one stuck with some careful surface preparation and some firm pressure a.co/d/30ke6NA
I got the new 12th 2024 signature and the Kobo color Libra and like them both.
@@NerdyNurseReads I do!
How do you switch to something like Kobo if you have hundreds of Kindle books?
@@jeffsellenrick6635I don’t think so Amazon is its own ecosystem like Apple.
for me its the new scribe, and kobo. scribe is mainly for uni, because i have some books in the ecosystem; and a way to try a book before refunding it... to then get on kobo. i personally think kobo is the way, but also i think for me the scribe is good due to its storage. i just hope that kobo will give more storage, and a option to add storage via sd card.
I just traded my scribe for the matcha basic
The matcha is really cute
The Boox Palma is awesome and I know it's expensive but I took it with me on vacation and saved so much room, didn't even need to remove it at some security checkpoints for TSA. Love it, wouldn't trade it for anything.
They’re missing so many opportunities with the scribe. Right now it’s a really expensive and large kindle but they could make it something special.
@@NerdyNurseReads i love mine cause reading manga is so beautiful on it, but I agree they could do more with the note taking part and i see some hope with the new feature announced that are coming in an update.
@@claudio4173 I hope some of the new features will be supported on the first Scribe. I guess we'll see when updates start rolling out.
@@NerdyNurseReads that was confirmed by amazon itself! the new options are coming since the new scribe is actually still a first gen scribe, nothing cahnged internally, looks like just a small aesthetic refresh
@@claudio4173 WELL THAT'S EXCITING!!! Maybe it will feel like I have brand new scribe!
Great review! Thank you 🙏 I wonder what you’d think of the boox go color 7 and the Palma 2
If I ever get the chance to try them I will review them but more ereaders aren’t in the budget ☹️ I wish there was somewhere I could go to play with all the available eink devices
Like, like, like, like...
TY TY TY 💜
So then do the Boox and Bigme devices allow notes to be saved on borrowed books? The Kobo not having that seems like a major flaw, especially since getting an e-reader is an attempt to use the library more for me.
Horrible: Why do you have to deface all your devices with these ugly stickers at the back. I can't belive you are doing that ! It just looks horrible!
@@jungleworld11 the stickers are cute! 🥰
