      AliasSLH There are so many modern powders with vastly different burn rates so there isn't an easy answer for a quick equivalency. With 45 Colt for instance you could use 8-8.5 gr. of Unique to duplicate the black powder loads.

    A few years ago I pulled out my late fathers black powder revolvers (old Peitta's from the 70's and 80's) and one of them was locked up stuck. He failed to take it completely apart when he cleaned it, Navy Arms Pietta 1851 replica and the BP residue had gummed up the on the cylinder pin and the cylinder was stuck solid on the pin. It was a brass frame too so I felt I had to be real careful about jarring it apart lol. I had to soak that sucker for weeks and still had to carefully pop it loose. They definitely need to be thoroughly cleaned!! Love your channel!

    Black Powder residue is 'hygroscopic.' That means that it absorbs moisture from the air and holds it against the steel, making rust a certainty. More modern solvents can deal with it, but it used to respond only to very hot, soapy water followed by lots of oil. Cleaning sessions were long and difficult.
    Smokeless powder started out as 'Guncotton,' the earliest form of nitrocellulose, which blew apart a lot of guns that were not made to handle the higher pressures.

    Just to add on what Hickok is saying. In the 1880s The french devolped both a smokeless cartridge and rifle that can withstand the the pressures of smokeless powder and they came up with the Lebel Rifle. France was head of the game for awhile till all the other countries found out how to do it or so. Therefore we adopted our first smokeless powder rifle. The Krag- Jorgesen. Then John Browning did his own tinkering and the Winchester Model 1893 turned into the famous Winchester model 1897.
    Smokeless powder is more Volatile than blackpowder. Burns Slower but creates more heat and pressure.

    I've had the UMC ammo Gunk up my 357 revolver in less than a hundred rounds. It was so bad after 50 rounds the cylinder was sticking and did not want to turn. And there was a lot of unspent powder in the casings that I ejected.
    The only reason I bought that ammo was because it was available back when ammo shortages were in full effect. I don't know how many people remember now but there was lots of time where you could not buy ammo to save your life.

    About a year ago, I was shooting my vaquero in .45 Colt out back. About 24 rounds. Air was fairly still. Using American Pioneer BP sub. Left a big cloud of white smoke out in the woods that was still out there by the time I was through after 5 minutes and went back up to the house. Pointed it out to my mother-in-law out the back window. It very very slowly drifted out if the woods over the pond and almost hovered over the pond for another 5-10 minutes before it finally completely moved on across the property line and dissipated. Looked kinds spooky if you didn’t know what it was.

    Real gunpowder (black powder) cleans up easily with water. Soapy water is better and hot soapy water is best. A nylon bore brush and hot soapy water and an old toothbrush will get it clean in a jiffy. Ballistol added to the water is a good thing to prevent rust as a coating is left after the hot water evaporates. With proper bullet lube a revolver should not foul , out (what Hickok describes as losing accuracy due to hard fouling in barrel) if you are using period correct bullets with generous lube holding capacity. Rifles with longer barrels even challenge proper black powder era designed bullets and lube but there are bullet designs now that serve far better. Great fun!

    Agree that shooters often have a mistaken idea that black powder's lower pressure makes it less powerful. Black powder has a longer burn time and can actually achieve higher velocity than smokeless powder limited to the same pressure peak. I acquired an online copy of the 1904 Thompson-LaGarde handgun tests; the 1904 chart of cartridges used listed early smokeless 45 Colt UMC ammo as barely around 700 fps (250 gr bullet) at a time when Remington factory 45 Colt ammo loaded with 40 grs of black powder would hit well over 900 fps from a 4.75" Colt SA barrel (Elmer Keith in SIXGUNS). The same 1904 chart listed the .476 Webley at 729 fps with a 288 gr bullet even though the charge was only 18 grs Black Powder. The British apparently used extremely fine grain black powder (5Fg) in revolver cartridges, which is how the .476 288gr bullet could achieve 729 fps, even with a low 18 gr charge. In THE GUN, (W. W. Greener, 1910 edition) on page 552, is a picture of black powder granulations then in use; the "revolver powder" illustrated is the finest grained of all illustrated, and appears to be about 5Fg as it is even finer grained than the Swiss 4Fg I have on hand to compare.

    There is a slow burning Smokeless powder that comes close to the black powder pressure curve - 5774 if I remember correctly, but that may not be right. It was the smokeless powder that Savage allowed to be used in their black powder rifle. Savage changed their mind as someone still managed to blow their gun up and chose to sue Savage rather than take responsibility for their own error.

  • @ben9820
    @ben9820 6 лет назад +6

    Are there any smokeless powders that have the same pressure curves as black powder?
    Meaning smokeless that could be safely fired in an old gun, or a reproduction not rated for regular smokeless.

    • @jasontruman1215
      @jasontruman1215 6 лет назад +4

      LivelikeIdaho trail boss is where it’s at. I’ve known people to load it and use it in bp only firearms. It was designed for cowboy action shooting to emulate bp but non corrosive and relatively smokeless. Of course before you take my advice check with the manufacturer.

    • @MegaChickenlips
      @MegaChickenlips 6 лет назад +1

      Trail Boss is a very low density smokless powder. Each granule has a hole in it so they look like little doughnuts. Because it is so low in density it takes more volume of powder to equal other powders with a similar burn rate. It is used to allow the reloader to more completely fill a case with a reduced power load there-by eliminating potential ignition problems with lite loads. It is not a replacement for "black powder" it is still a smokeless powder.

    • @brucetucker4847
      @brucetucker4847 6 лет назад

      Do your research with the BP subs, some of them like Blackthorn 209 are meant to be used only with modern in-line hunting rifles. I'm not sure I'd even use 777 in a 19th century gun. Works great for repros, though, fouling isn't an issue at all, but it doesn't feel or sound quite like BP and worst of ll the smoke doesn't smell like brimstone!
      Trail Boss is NOT a BP substitute. It was designed to be used for pipsqueak smokeless loads for competitors who want less recoil. (You can only reduce the amount of powder so far before the case isn't full enough for reliable ignition.) You get less velocity and recoil but the pressure curve is still like smokeless.

      I think it was put in later. The coin fell out at the end of this video, and the back side was as worn as the front side. Being the genius and brilliant detective that I am, I deduced from that that the coin had been carried around and used for several years before landing in this grip. If I'd thought it was put in there when the gun was made, I have left it. I bought one like it dated 1887 and replaced it.

    if not mistaken black powder 45's propelled a 250gr bullet to just under 1000fps yet todays smokeless loads w/ that energy are considered too high pressure for even modern saa's. are black powder loads the only option for self defense in an saa?

    The 45 Colt wasn't reduced. The Scofield was adopted as a secondary standard, at IT was less (around that 30 grains you mentioned). The soldiers soon started asking the sutlers for the "long" 45 because it was stronger and this is what gave the Colt it's name of "long Colt" - soldiers asking for the longer round.
    The originals were also balloon head cases and those will hold 40 grains, but modern cases are web head and will only hold 35 grains if the load is compressed - 30 grains is more realistic if you don't want to compress the load. But again this is because of modern case design, not because of another reason. The 38-40, and the 44-40 also held 40 grains of black powder in the original cases, and are equally reduced in capacity because of modern case design.
    As an aside, I truly think the Scofield would have fared much better if Smith had chambered it for the 45 Colt round.

    Black powder fouling building up is a big problem with hunting guns especially. You fire one shot, reload, go track the animal and then you might miss because of the fouling.

      More lube. I use Maxi-balls that carry a ton of bore butter and the fouling is much less of a problem than with patched round balls.

    @ResistTheNonsense 6 лет назад

    Not sure but I think that. all else fixed ( same case, same projectile, same barrel length the only way to have the same power is to have the same pressure ie... identical pressure curve).

    • @brucetucker4847
      @brucetucker4847 6 лет назад

      Not true at all. You can have very different powders loaded to achieve the same velocity in particular gun with very different pressure curves. Mostly it depends on the burn rate of the powder. The burn rate of smokeless depends much more on the pressure than it does for black, but generally, when confined (as in a gun barrel) smokeless burns much faster than black so you get a big pressure spike very soon after ignition.
      Btw, load that give identical velocity in one gun may have different velocities from each other in a different gun chambered in the same cartridge. BP takes longer to burn so all else being equal extra barrel length will make more difference to BP loads than to smokeless loads in the same cartridge. That's why all those old Kentucky rifles were 5-6' long. With a smokeless load a barrel that long wouldn't give you much extra velocity over a shorter barrel.

    I understand loading 5 if you're carrying it. but if at the range you are literally loading then shooting. why load only 5?

    • @hickok45
      @hickok45  6 лет назад +8

      Six is fine if you are loading and shooting, but I have developed the habit of loading five and just stick with it. Plus, we have millions of people watching, so it's good to continue to demonstrate the safe method for loading these old action revolvers. If I need more capacity, I can always grab a Glock and one of my 33-rd magazines. :-)

    What type of lube are you using on your 44-40 black powder handloads? A smokeless powder lube on the bullets will not clean away black powder fouling at all. I use Beeswax/Coconut Oil (90/10 ratio), and the bore always stays fairly clean even at 60 or more rounds. I'm using 36grs FFFg (Swiss) and 255gr Lee 452-255-RF in 45 Colt in a 5.5" Uberti SAA clone. Quite a powerful load (1000+ fps). All I ever do while shooting is put a drop of Ballistol at cylinder bearing points front and rear as needed, roughly after every 3rd or 4th cylinder (18-24 rounds). Lubes used on original ammo were a beeswax/animal tallow, which I'm sure would work as well as the beeswax/coconut oil I make my lube with.

      I ordered these .44-40 BP rounds from Buffalo Arms. I have loaded a lot of .45 Colt BP rounds. I have used SPG lube, beeswax, etc. in loading my own; however, at one point when I was shooting quite a few Cowboy Action matches, I decided to just try loading the same cast bullets I used for everything else with the usual lube for smokeless powder.
      They worked fine. As long as I'd spray down the firearm a bit occasionally between stages of fire, I had no problems. Since sometimes there would be an hour or more between firing the next stage, I'd have done that anyway to make sure the BP residue was staying soft there in the sun for so long. It was simpler than sizing and lubing my own bullets with special lube, by a long shot! I don't recommend this, but it worked for me.
