The GUNS!! Those evil, murderous GUNS!! Hickok is tricking us all with his calm, polite manner, but don't let yourself be fooled, GUNS ARE BAD! Just seeing guns makes me cry. I once saw a bullet on the street, so I turned around and took another route. I don't want to get shot. You know that 100 million people die everyday from evil guns... ok, that's enough, I can only pretend to be dumb for so long before my brain actually starts to ache. I don't know how the lefties do it everyday.

It does not have to be the original Colt, cause I have a Freedom Arms Single Action .22 LR/Mag six inch and this thing is one of the most beautiful revolver I have seen and owned! I agree!

Just like you, I enjoy cleaning my guns. I like how they feel, and how they smell after a good cleaning. It's always nice to review the basics of cleaning, and see how others do it. Thanks Hickok. It's always a pleasure, and I always learn something.
I hate needing to clean them, but I enjoy doing it for leisure. I guess I don't like doing it when I have to, because I always get done shooting at the end of the day past my normal sleep schedule. I don't want to stay up all that long cleaning most my guns.

Hickock, I'm probably close to your age (I'm 64), and have been around guns, mostly single action revolvers and lever action rifles, my whole life, both shooting and cleaning them, and want to express my appreation for your videos, and, despite my experience and background, you've taught me a lot. S BIG THANK YOU goes out to you! Would love to meet you one day!
I think you need to use more Ballistol.
When I was with the Irish Army there was five occasions in which we cleaned our weapons.
01. Daily cleaning.
02. Weekly cleaning.
03. Before firing.
04. After firing
05. When the weapon would be put into storage for a short or a long period of time.
When the weapon would be going into storage for short of long periods of time, for instance, when the weapon would be put into storage before being shipped overseas for service in places such as the Lebanon we would be required to clean the weapon as hickok45 has done here.
With rifles in particular, when the weapon was fully cleaned, we would run a Pull Through through the rifle barrel a number of times until it appeared to be completely free from any residue of oil or burnt gunpowder. At this point the bore of the rifle would appear to be absolutely spotlessly clean.
Next step: While using a funnel that fitted into the bore of the rifle, we would boil out the barrel with about one gallon of boiling water which would sweat the barrel.
This was done by placing the muzzle of the rifle into a plastic basin which would seal the muzzle of the rifle somewhat when the rifle muzzle was inverted and placed on the bottom of the said plastic basin while the barrel was being filled with the boiling water. At this point in time the boiling water started to cool off, after which we would lift the muzzle of the rifle from the bottom of the plastic basin to allow the hot water to run freely out the barrel of the rifle and into the plastic basin.
This step would be repeated until a whole gallon of boiling water would be ran through the rifle barrel, after which time the rifle would be left to cool off in its own time, possibly overnight.
When a clean Pull Through would be pulled through the rifle barrel the next morning, it would come out as black coal from the residue of burnt gunpowder, and or, any other residue such as oil that may have worked its way into the pores of the rifle barrel while firing took place, in other words, anything that would be lodged in the pores of the gunmetal of the rifle barrel would be sweated out of the rifle barrel by the boiling water from the evening before.
After several runs with a clean Pull Through to completely clean and dry the rifle barrel, we would then lightly oil the rifle barrel once more with a Pull Through soaked in oil and we would clean, dry and lightly oil any other parts of the rifle that made contact with the boiling water the evening before also. The weapon was then ready to go into storage after it was completely coated with a light film of proper gun oil.
That to us was the ultimate cleaning of any small arms in the Irish Army, be it the cleaning of a rifle or a hand held pistol, automatic or otherwise. This cleaning procedure helped to promote a long, reliable service life of any of the above mentioned weaponry.
Okay, in short, the Irish army has clean guns. Got it.
But I’m surprised to hear that Ireland actually has an army. More surprised that they would deploy anywhere. Not in the EU, not in NATO, neutral for something like 100 years.
Of course, if you mean the IRA, then it makes sense.
@@Frankie5Angels150 Ireland has been in the EU quite a while. They voted to leave some years ago, but the EU kept having the vote restaged until they got the result they liked! They send contingents out on peace keeping roles, usually with the UN.

My dad placed a smith model 19 on one of the 1979s wood boxes. Next time he got it out of the safe the tannins or whatever the wood box was stained with rusted the side of the revolver. Sad day to pick up a nice pistol with a rusty barrel and cylinder. Wipe them down and use good gun socks. Makes a big difference in the long run.
I have seen a couple of videos commenting that Ballistol does not preserve metal well. Hickok has pretty much convinced me of the opposite - that Ballistol cleans, lubricates, and preserves very well. It’s also good for cleaning wood, plastic, and bullet wounds. The only problem is that it has a powerful odor, bordering on stink. It leaves an obnoxious smell in my gun vault. Regardless of the eye-watering fumes, I know I’m going to go out and spend $20 and buy a batch of Ballistol, just because of Hickok45.

Been watching you since the beginning, love the colt saa my papaw born in 1920s was end of single action era of people that actually carried them he talked of leaving for the war with a 5.5 inch marked wells fargo company with a set of ivory grips with a carved steer head with red ruby eyes he sold this gun to a officer of his for something like a month wages on the way over. He deeply regretted this move later in life but transitioned to double action magnum smith and wessons after returning and they becoming available again in the 50s before he died though I bought him a colt frontier scout 22 as he shot rimfires almost everyday it relite his saa fire. I wish I could show him the collection I have amassed since his passing. The fine carved leather, custom grips and custom loads to go with them and cleaning and pondering on their history are as fun as shooting them to me.
It's funny how everyone does it differently, I think many of us were self taught. When we came home at night, my Dad would always make us clean our guns. (We used to shoot in the woods almost every day.), I don't remember him ever "teaching" us, you learned by watching. Things were better without al of today's distractions. Thanks for the video guys.

Just got my first gun, Rough Rider single action. Was raised partially around them, but its my first and this was the first video I found. My family taught me on modern style, not sure if that's the term. So, from the bottom of my heart thank you for an informative video on taking care of pistols like it.

I’m not a gun nut, but I do want to try firing a gun at least once in my lifetime, at a shooting range, especially an older fire arm I definitely wouldn’t mind getting my hands on an old navy colt. It’s really the old classic stuff I’m into.
Find a friend, or relative who is experienced, and have them show you. But beware, you'll probably start looking at gun sales after you do a little shooting. 😉
I have been in love with the Colt SAA since I was 17. It is still a goal gun for me down the road, but after your review of the Uberti Cattleman, I finally purchased one! There is just something about the history that makes them stand out from all other pieces of art (yes, art). Big fan of your videos!

A fellow SASS shooter/gunsmith showed me a paragraph in an old Colt book. It stated that the sights on SAA’s from 1873 to around 1920 were regulated to 100 yards for engaging targets during the Indian wars. This was true with All barrel lengths that accounted for them shooting high.
I have never heard that. That explains it. I've always wondered why most all shoot high. Thanks.
45-70 BEARPAW the old black powder guns are like that too. Not sure what yardage they are set at, but its further than I shoot lol.
It hit me like lightening when I read it. I’d had a 4 3/4” 1st gen from 1898 in 45 Colt that at 15 yards was shooting above a regular target. That explained all. I just got a mate in 38-40 I have not shot that I am ready for the high shooting.

As usual, a great vid. One additional tool I use extensively is a thin kabob stick, the kind you get 100 of for 79 cents at the supermarket. Put a patch over the sharp point and even the smallest slots and corners will come clean. You can use it naked to scrape out hardened crud from the tightest places, and since it's bamboo it's totally non-invasive to the finish and the metal.

Can you please do a detailed breakdown and cleaning of one of these down to the last screw? I love these guns and there are no videos showing that like there are for guns like the 1911.

Very good article covering the cleaning of a single action revolver. I use the exact same procedure for my Heritage Rough Rider. It's not a Colt but comes apart pretty much the same way.
What product do you both use?

I would really like to see a Colt single action completely disassembled and gone through, doesn't matter how long the video is. The longer it is the more we can learn about how they work and what to watch for when cleaning them ourselves.

Watching this is like watching myself. I clean my weapon in the exact manner for 60 years, right down to the Ballistol. Every time I shoot, I clean my weapon. And tightening of the screws too! There are 10 exposed screws on a SAA with 1 piece grips and 11 with 2 piece grips. And they WILL get loose.
And I use Ballistol on minor cuts and scratches too. Was used in WWI and WWII by the German medical corps. Amazing product.

that Colt sounds like a good one! Action sounds crisp. I picked one up at auction not too long ago (who DOESN'T want a Colt???). The action could use a bit of help, but I'm measuring the springs and I intend refresh them with as close to exact replacements as possible. I agree with your philosophy of 'touch then wipe'. I don't touch any of my firearms with my hands without wiping them down with a silicone rag. They always go back in the safe with just a smidge of slick on them... Great video, as usual. Keep em coming.

Part of the reason I clean after every use, even if it's not until the next day, is that I'd never keep up with which ones I've been shooting and need cleaning. I'd have to keep a spreadsheet on it or something. :-)

I love videos like this, and to be honest with you if the video was 2 hrs long for a full strip down I'd still watch it all.
After all people who really care for their antique guns like you and myself want them to be around long after we shuffle off this planet. And I like yourself get just as much joy from cleaning and looking after them as I do from shooting them after all gun ownership weather it be an antique or a modern day gun is a privilege.
Listening to you talk about cleaning guns sounds just like my Dad telling me how to clean guns when I was a kid...and I'm 67!

I've enjoyed my Ruger New Bearcat for decades, and in the not-too-distant future I'd like to increase my SA collection...the Shopkeeper, Vaquero, and one or more of the great Uberti replica pieces are on the short list. I’ve always wondered why so many have questions about cleaning. Solvent, oil OR any CLP. Worn out toothbrush, paper towels, rag, bore brush or bore snake. Apply. Brush. Remove. Apply oil. Wipe with rag. Done. Applies to almost every gun ever made.
Well since you asked, I have been using scrubbing bubbles for the last several years to clean the carbon and dirt out of my guns. New and old alike. It doesn’t seem to hurt any of the wood, or polymers. It does strip dirt right out though. I use it for Black Powder and modern cartridge guns alike. Just soak, scrub and rinse. Sometimes it takes a couple cycles but it works very well. In fact there’s even a rebranded scrubbing bubbles on the market for gun cleaning at a much higher price. Just oil after you dry it.

This video (and channel) is a beautiful example of American gun culture. Imagine the huge positive impact we could all have if we came together to raise awareness of mental health and depression issues (diagnosed or not). America looses so many to suicide. If all gun owners took a minute to call an old friend, call their mother, invest a few minutes in a real conversation with a coworker, that would be huge. If we take away the stigma bit by bit, more people will seek help for themselves. The firearm community is effected in a major way- about 50% of all suicides utilize a firearm. That means a lot of us firearm owners might not be well. It should be pointed out that an overwhelming majority of guns are used safely and happily and peacefully. It's ok to not be feeling your best, it happens all the time. Did you know that middle age white men have the highest rate of suicide of any group? Just knowing there's a community of people out there who care about you, maybe enjoy the same awesome hobby as you, can make a real difference (I think it's safe to say for all the long-time hickock45 viewers- we want the best mental health for each other and our families). Sorry Hickock, I hope I'm not pontificating! You've got a great message of your own, and you've built your platform well.

Totally irrelevant, as well as a bit goofy. All this means is that once somebody decides to end his or her life and is serious about it, there's not a more certain method that with a firearm. If there was a pill available at the local drug store that would put one to sleep forever, then NOBODY would use a firearm. People who don't even care about firearms or the hobby often go purchase one just to commit suicide.
Anyway, sorry, no connection to make between ill people thinking about suicide and gun owners; in fact, people who have a hobby they participate in regularly are the least likely to commit suicide.
Agreed. Hobbies and community maintain and improve mental health! I didn't mean to imply a relationship between guns and suicide, as much as to say that the gun community can make a positive impact on society, just like we do by preserving the 2nd Amendment, supporting the troops and veterans, food banks, etc.. In fact, mental health is a major Veterans issue, as they put their mental health on the line as well as physical. I refer to the 22 Push-Up Challenge, and to the great work Chris Kyle did. Keep the inside of your gun safe dry...use DAMP-RID or recycled desiccant packs. Especially important if you live somewhere humid or don’t have air conditioning. That’s important for ammunition storage as well.
I use a small heater rod in my safe. I think it puts out about 15 watts of heat, just enough to keep the inside of the safe slightly warmer and dryer than the outside. It's small, and sits on the floor of the safe. Available from safe dealers. I Think it was like $30. Works good.
If using Black powder , I found Windex with vinegar cleans the gunk out quick and well. Then oil and no muss no fuss, been doing that for 10 years and no problem.
Was that a joke? The vinegar is pretty hard on the metal and the finish i would assume. If it works for you than so it is but i wouldnt let anything acidic get even close to bare steel or blueing.
I've used vinegar to STRIP blueing.
For years I've used Window cleaner with ammonia for blackpowder guns and cartridge guns in which I'm shooting ammo with corrosive primers. Just don't let ammonia set on brass long...wipe it off immediately.
I've heard that vinegar will take the blueing off. Does it do a good job of that? Does it take it off evenly. What if I had a firearm that I wanted to take down to the bare metal and get the blueing off. Would it be enough to just submerge it in vinegar for awhile? Does it take it off completely? Thanks.
hickok45 yup it works great, just any plain white vinegar works, I refinished a shotgun recently and I let it soak about 5 hours.
Vinegar will if used heavily , Mike Venturino of Guns and Ammo told readers if " , Wanting a good Black powder cleaner, Windex with vinegar, bought at any box store will clean the black powder gunk out of a gun nicely." With out harming the finish.

Lorimar's "The Waltons" successfully ran on CBS 40 - 50 years ago --- that's near half a century -- and its story timeline was an era 40 years prior, the 1930s and surviving the Great Depression in rural Virginia. In all likelihood John or Zeb (Grandpa) used the shotgun to put a Blue Ridge Mountains' turkey on the table for Thanksgiving dinner.
. . . 25 years ago on "Home Improvement" one could envision a believable scene where Tim Allen tells one of the boys to clean his shotgun that he'd used trap shooting earlier in the day, quipping a make-believe threat that his son will go without supper if he doesn't clean it really well. But, thinking the behind-the-scenes scenario through, "Home Improvement" was produced by Disney subsidiary, Buena Vista Television. The Disney PC brigade would veto a gun in a Disney household or a Disney show in two seconds flat.
Question: In this century, what American TV network -- ABC, The CW, CBS, Fox, NBC, UPN, The WB -- would allow one of its weekly series to present a scene where the parent or grandparent admonishes the youth to clean a family member's gun, or even make mention of, a normal thing for many of us, a gun in the house? It'd never happen.
. . . . Back in the '60s we occasionally saw a character cleaning a gun on "The Virginian" or "Gunsmoke," but those were westerns where that's to be expected. But for the most part, television westerns have pretty much been dead for the past 25 years.
I very much enjoyed and was enlightened by the visuals and running commentary of hickok45 cleaning his 1st gen. Colt SAA. Apparently I missed the part where he said he favored Ballistol over Hoppe's No. 9.

We were doing some action work on a Marlin and the conversation came up. He went to his library and had it marked as it came up so often. Back in the day a very common Gunsmithing pride Ute was to raise the factory front sight blade.
I have my girlfriend dab a little Hoppe's #9 behind each ear when we go out on the town.......
Not a good idea unless you want to lose her; too many gun nuts out there would find her irresistible! :-)

Enjoyable video as always. Thanks, Hickok! I live in Colorado, where it's mercifully dry. The rag near the safe really isn't necessary out here, but I will employ that method in the future regardless. None of my guns are half as desirable as that SA, but I value them all highly and strive to maintain them effectively nonetheless. Not really a 'new shooter' anymore, but this gentleman still elucidates me regularly about nearly every aspect of gun culture. Might even have to take a break from CLP and try Ballistol...

I'm a cowboy action shooter I love the way you clean the guns that's basically the way I do it only 2 or 3 times a year. Yeah but if it's black powder or black powder substitute it's too pretty much a total Tear down. I love Berastol . Sorry I don't think I spelled it right. But great stuff.

After going through my garage I found an old rusty revolver in the toolbox my grandpa gave me after putting it in vinegar i find out it’s a September 19 1871 colt

They put that inscription on all SAA models, replicas included. My brand new Uberti Cattleman has that patent date inscribed on it.

Hey hickok I have seen every single cleaning video and has helped me so much for all the guns I have from revolver to AR to handgun, now the last thing I would like is if you could do a cleaning video for a 12 gauge! 😮 a maverick 88 or any Mossberg!!

When I cleaned my Ruger Vacaros and my Colt SAA... from the custom shop... I used nitro solvent spray and had great results with it... I really miss the life of the shooting sport... good times for all.... haha 😄 🤣 😂.

I double up on the patches so they go in real tight and it scubs the bore and cylinders and saves me time. I like One Shot by Hornandy unless I'm going to not shot the gun for a while. Then I use Ballistol. I clean my Colts the same way.
