I am 74 (75 on the 3rd Sept 2024) and currently live in Balham (7.1/2 miles from the centre of London) however it is not cheap. Thankfully, I live in a Military Housing Association for ex-serviceman with a disability. My disability, is that I am nearly deaf+ back problems. My housing association rent would be £1,400 a month but I receive a big subsidy so only pay £652 a month which Lambeth Counsel pay! Without that it would be impossible! London is expensive, but what this city offers is a bit unique the culture, the arts, the history and a melting pot of the world trying to find their way in life. I agree the weather in London sucks! • @admusik99
    @admusik99 Год назад +171

I'm a Londoner. The Thames River is brown because of the river bed itself, not pollution. The river has a very strong current as the estuary to the sea is only a few miles outside of London. This current, in turn, pulls all of the silt from the river bed, making the water appear brown.
EDIT: You did us proud. Such good video and and a Londoner, speaking for myself, I can take London for granted so seeing this reminds me how special this city is.

Fromy my understanding, Sewage lines from all the modern buildings built close to the Thames go straight into the Thames and then the current takes that water to the water cleaning facility near Greenwhich. And then continues to other.
Kings college London (KCL), testing the water during Covid, they were taking water directly from around Tower Bridge area (you can find reports written on this), they confirmed there were high amounts of cocaine in the sewage.

My family and I spent time in London this past summer and we stayed in East London but we visited many tourist sites such as Wimbledon, the palace, tower and London bridge, churches, museums and so forth. We traveled from US, New York area and we never considered using Uber, we used the tube all through even to and from the airport, and we averaged 20,000 steps per day. At the end of the trip, my outfits were loose. The cost of food in East London is much more reasonable than what you showed. The food is not as tasty, however, they are very health especially their milk products. I am sensitive to foods that contain dairy product so I drink only plant milk such as soy, almond. However, I ate regular ice cream with whole milk in London with no side effects. I also ate brick oven pizza with cheese without reaction. We did a little research about the ingredients that are found in foods in US and we found that 14 ingredients in US foods are banned in UK, so this little fact also maybe one of the contributing factors of the expanding waistline of us here in the US. The issue with British weather in general is not so much that it's bad as that's its very unpredictable. Five different weather systems intersect and compete over the British Isles, the Polar Maritime, Arctic Maritime, Polar Continental, Tropical Continental and Tropical Maritime. Which is why it can be warm and sunny one day, cold and torrential rain the next. Compared to continental Europe where the weather may not be 'better' its just in more predictable blocks. I think that's what people dislike about the weather when they visit here, they aren't used to such rapid changes.

Takes years to get onto the property ladder, even with a good job.
I like restaurants (never have to visit the same one twice), live bands and walking around London - 40 years.
The Thames is a strong tidal river which rises and falls by 10 meters, it causes the silt to rise and make the waters cloudy. London used to be a major shipping port, but now the port is a long way down in the Thames estuary.
The major crime in central London is pickpockets and simple personal theft. The knife crime is virtually all related to drug distribution and territory outside central areas, around 100 young men die a year and possibly 10,000 stabbings. I’ve never felt unsafe day or night in London, but be sensible and safe.

We are only given jobs the whites don't want. The exceptions to the rule don't count because they have to fill government quota as to the amount of black people the put in certain positions.
In predominantly black areas, we pay more council tax and they put parking restrictions in our areas so we have to pay to park at our homes. If too many black people try to move into a white neighbourhood, they move out, along with their businesses. I could go on and on. The only thing that's here are jobs but it takes 2 people to make a living. Thank God it's currency is strong so that when you send your money back home you can see it work. Hello Tayo, Here are some tips on budgeting for your trips to EU countries. If you plan to come back to London, I recommend using the hop-on and off buses as it is a great and cheaper way to travel while seeing London. The same applies to other EU countries. When touring the EU, I always use the red route bus as it shows and educates you on key artefacts and architectures. It's also a great way to meet new people. The green or yellow routes go into remote (local) areas, and I know this because of my connections to and from the EU area.
It's essential to plan thoroughly, as your ticket is valid for 24 or 36 hours, depending on your budget. Another tip is to try eating outside of the cities, as there are fabulous chefs nationwide and in other EU countries. It will give you a good sense of the culture, people, and food when you venture outward. You also get more value for your money. #London. Every little helps! :)

It is, indeed, very interesting to see how a London 'tourist' might tend to view London...; as opposed to somebody who's been living here right throughout all of their entire lives.
At one point, your video went and mentioned...that native born Londoner's don't tend to do 'touristy' things...such as hire a boat to travel along the River Thames/or, ride on the London Eye; well, I would have to disagree with that point...as I have done both of these things; and, am really quite willing to do it all over, again; because, frankly, it's 'fun'...; but, then, you need to have plenty of spare money to be able to try out doing such things...call it 'throw away' money (which is why most people can't even be bothered, I guess)!
London is a fairly clean environment...with plenty of employed street cleaners being really hard at work daily. I suppose there is less 'street sleepers' than there is in American ghettos/also, far less open drug taking.
As to crime, yes, it happens here and there...according to where you do find yourself living; as in say, a 'gangland' area...where crime may be both regular and rife. Inside of the city center there tends to be far less crime.../or, at least, in any obvious sort of way(there are still pick pockets/-etc.).
Yes, there are guns...though, far fewer than in America; and, people do get shot...usually, guns are either in the hands of either the police/or else, 'hardened' criminals...who use them to protect their drug selling/or, to rob banks with/-etc. Some gangs use guns to shoot down other rival gang members. But, if you are not involved with gangsters yourself...; then, you very rarely tend to encounter seeing such things.
Certainly, I should like to point out that England itself is 'huge'...consisting of 4 separate counties: England/Ireland/Scotland/Wales; so, covering just London, alone...is, most certainly, NOT witnessing seeing the whole of this entire country...some of which parts are very 'green', indeed...as in pure 100% countryside/and, other parts which are, mostly, living inside of 'a concrete jungle'.
Even when one lives inside of 'a concrete jungle'...there tends to be many 'green spaces' available in the form of public parks; for example, here in London there is: St James Park, Hyde Park, Regent's Park Zoo/-etc.
Yes, there is the muddy brown River Thames...; but, also, there are places like the 'blue sea' of Brighton beach front...; as well as, many Canals.
It takes a fairly 'strong/fit' person to go walking around all over London town...; many times this walking is manageable; but, hard on the body/legs...; also, mostly, is used to cover relatively short distances of say a few miles. If you are on a really low income...then, maybe, the best and cheapest way to get around in London is to 'buy/hire' a bike. If you wish to travel both far and wide, however; and, fairly 'quick'...; then, it's best to buy an Oyster Card pass which gives you access to: 'bus/underground tube train/overground train/and, tram'...; however, you have to load that pass up with truly sufficient money...before all of that money runs out; and, then, you would need to, immediately, top it up, again, with even more money.
(NOTE: If you are aged 60+ years old...; as I currently am...; then, the government gives you a FREE over 60+ London travel pass...; where you don't need to keep on ever constantly paying. Before I had my FREE pass...; then, I would either walk/or , bike, instead.)
Way back in the day...there were fewer diverse restaurants to go and visit: English/Chinese/Indian...perhaps, that was about it; however, now-a-days, you can find restaurants related to just about anything and everything, including: Italian/French/Greek/Spanish/Mexican/African/Vietnamese/Jamaican/-etc. foods.
Yes, there are many galleries you can see/visit in London...some of which are FREE/and, others which are 'paying'. The National Gallery inside of Trafalgar Square allows people to see most of their exhibitions for FREE; but, it also includes 'paid for' exhibitions, as well. (Right at the side of the National Gallery...there is the National Portrait Gallery.)
The weather here in England is, generally speaking, extremely 'changeable'...meaning: sun/rain/hail storm/snow/fog. (Yes, it can be, mostly, wet/dull/cold/dreary looking.) But, if I'm being perfectly honest...I would much prefer living with that type of constantly changing weather pattern...; then, to live in a place where the weather never ever changes at all...?!
Your video shows you were charged £70.00 to have a plate of Jamaican dinner. Wow! Must have been a really top class 'expensive' restaurant. Normally, the charge for food is so much less...; you would pay around £10-£15.00, maybe...if you were to enter any more 'normal' restaurant/or, buy a take away. (If you really wish to buy food very 'cheaply'; then, go and check out visiting a 'poundland' store...; but, of course, this involves making your own.)

As a Londoner, I must say this is accurate. London is expansive, vibrant, exciting, always something to do, but it's expensive. Don't let the awful weather get you down, though as you can never get bored. The other good thing about London is that it's a walkable city. But, I will say do keep your wits about you because crime is on the rise.

It's not on the rise, I would say it's always had a dark side to it. It hasn't been safe since the 1960s, and even then we had gangs.

Thank you for your kind words and for sharing your thoughts on London. As a diaspora resident of this vibrant city, I agree with you that it can be pretty expensive to live here, and many locals prefer to avoid popular tourist areas due to the high cost of living. There are other great towns and cities in the UK worth exploring, such as Manchester, Oxford, Birmingham, the Midlands, Wales, and other quintessential towns and villages where the elite live.
Despite the challenges of living in London, there are still plenty of beautiful places to visit around the city, such as East London, Kent, Cambridge, and other Essex home counties. Tourists and locals alike need to be aware of the realities of living in London, including the increasing cost of living, which has unfortunately led to an increase in homelessness.
Living in London requires being mentally, emotionally, and financially strong, but with the right mindset and resources, it can be a wonderful and rewarding experience. One can only succeed quickly if the person wins the lottery. :)

Nice one Tayo. Enjoying this. Point of correction if it has not been mentioned elsewhere is that the bridge at 8:27 is actually called “Tower Bridge” (and is next to ‘Tower Of London’ where the Royal jewels etc can be seen). London Bridge is about 100 metres away and looks like just an ordinary traffic bridge. Common mistake though. Thanks

Best to come during the summer months when the weather is usually hot and dry. Usually. We don't have many heatwaves in the UK but if you want to visit London and get good weather, May to August the best time. But bring an umbrella because it will rain!

The meal for two if you add in a few extra drinks would be an average workers daily pay. The small backstreet flat that lady talked about renting is around 50% of an average pay. Its more than expensive.

Loved this vid! In London we don’t have a tipping culture like the US as most bills include service charge (about 12%), which goes to restaurant staff.
