Tayo, this video is probably one of the best piece of content about New York and America. I don't want to criticize other popular African travel content creators but everything in this video was super balanced, honest, very intelligent and way above others usually do. I particularly loved all the characters you interviewed and send them my prayers: the Nigerian food business guy, the two young beautiful ladies ("find your tribe" what a smart piece of advice) and the lady in the street from Trinidad. Félicitations Tayo, tu es le meilleur.

As an American it always amazes me how nice people are in other countries. Your right people in America don’t care about you. Your value is how much money you can bring in. I’ll never forget being in Bali, Indonesia after 3 days and I realized they had no homelessness. I was shocked. It’s the moment I realized how bad my country really is and how much we could afford to take care of our people if we really wanted to.
How many places in Bali did you see
I'm from Switzerland. When I lived in Zürich it was like that. Business city (banking town). People are mostly a holes. Arrogant. They're all interchangeable. Boring.
I moved to the mountains recently. The Alps. People are totally different here. Friendly. Considerate. So yeah... I don't miss it.
I only wish I had moved away 10 years earlier. 😂
Remember America is a very big place with millions of ppl.
America is a huge country of immigrants. Homeless people come from every nation. How many immigrants did you meet in Bali or Indonesia ? In America is an attitude “how much money I can make without work? How can I cheat a system?” I’m the immigrant myself and I know tens of immigrants who sold houses for $500-$600K and live in city housing for $100-150 a month , get SSI and Medicaid.
New York City is NOT America. It’s 1 City.

You've come a really long way from the first video of you stuck in a Joburg apartment at the start of the pandemic, which was my introduction to your film brilliance. My first night in NYC 9 years ago I vibed with strangers from like 5 countries. Still remains one of the coolest nights of my life. I love the diversity and vibe of NY nightlife.
The Suya Guy is truly an entrepreneurial genius. An artist & really humble too.
I’m a born & raised NYer & i enjoyed your take on NYC. It’s not for everyone. The term “only the strong survive” fits this place and i think that’s part of what makes this place so unique & so great. This place is very flawed but it’s flaws are part of the uniqueness of NYC. I’ve lived outside of NYC for a moment in the military and have visited many cities in America and around the world. Great places but none can compare to New York City. One of the ladies said it best, this is a place where you need a break from it but for me, once that break is over, I’m ready to deal with it again. It’s only Dog Eat Dog if you let it be.

Honestly nyc just feels like a worse London. Visited both and not from either but nyc is more expensive for significantly worse public transport and less attractions. Spent more than a week in both tho and i plan to visit again.

There are lots of places out there that are more interesting then new York.

I am a NYC native. Born and raised in BK. Everything you stated is true. As far as the cleanliness, the subways, the noise, the fast paced life and lack of courtesy as well as homelessness and drugs etc. A lot of things were magnified due to the pandemic and it’s even worse now. There were already existing issues but seems like things have become 10 times worse. We as NYers don’t understand why our streets aren’t cleaner. Why our transit system is trash etc. However, change really begins with the individual. Also, yes, there are those who just don’t care and contribute to the negative aspects but there are a lot that do. That are kind, compassionate and empathetic. ❤
Nyc transit isn’t to bad where you live. Sometimes I just take the bike if the subway don’t wanna work out. But the cleanliness is something that needs to be considered so much tax money is going to what??

@@crishnaholmes7730 yes sometimes I have to uber especially when certain bike paths might be closed, a bridge is closed, or I have to go elsewhere where it isn’t transportable. You can also use taxis if you want but my area don’t have an abundance of them

Everything Tayo said in this video was correct. I flew to New York from Texas last month to renew my Nigerian passport at the Nigerian House and I can tell you for free that if they pay me $100,000 more than what I make here in Texas, I can never live in New York. In summary, New York is not for everybody. Good job Tayo!

The city wasn't always like this, go back 10 years. NYC was making headlines for being one of the safest big cities, the streets were cleaner, the mentally ill homeless were in institutions. The De Blasio mayoral administration and the pandemic made the city completely unrecognizable. I didn't know it was possible for a city to change that drastically that quickly.

I woke up 4.30am, my goddess asleep, put a nespresso, rolled a cigarette, and after a few homestead videos, this guy appeared saying something about passports. Watched that one, really honest one, liked and subscribed in a split second. This is the second I watched. Although in northern Europe, first time I felt so close to Nigeria. Loved all people interviewed and I deeply appreciate the beauty of people like Tayo creating a hope in a world who is getting uglier every day. I grew up in NJ and moved to NYC in my 20’s. Lived here for 30 years then had to move back to NJ for a variety of reasons outside my control. It took me another 20 years to crawl my way back. I am a New Yorker again. I’m home.
As a native New Yorker, and I lived in NYC for all my life, I can contest that this is true. It has gotten harder and worse over the past decades, and it will get harder and worse in the years to come.
I used to love NY. But the liberals are all making it a shithole and New Yorkers have to take it back

I'm a native New Yorker. I love that you visited my home town. Even other Americans don't think NY gets hot. It's not small, I'm from the Bronx and had a boyfriend in BK, we were two hours apart. It's just that it's so crowded it may seem smaller. Also, don't judge the entire US, by NY. It's pretty unique. There are places that are cleaner, cheaper and people don't step over the homeless. I had to learn to be kinder when I left. I left twice, because as much as I love it, my money goes MUCH farther down south. But I'm glad I'm from there. I wouldn't want to have grown up anywhere else.

geographically its a tiny place in square miles. Traffic plays a part in why that took 2 hours. Even by train- there are so many factors why it takes so long to travel
This is so real. I was in NY for 1.5 years for work and you really captued how important it is to know who you are and finding your tribe because the city can be isolating. During my time, I found it hard to have a solid west african community in brooklyn which was a change since I am so used to being around the african community in the dmv. I left relatively early because I couldnt stomach the lack of community. It can be chanllenging. Like the brother said it takes time 5year, 10 years etc. It is possible but definelty not for everyone.

That guy who sells bowls from Nigeria still kept his accent since 2003. That’s the one thing I appreciate about Nigerians, you guys take Nigeria with you wherever you go. As a result you don’t feel isolated and need to conform in the diaspora, obviously not everyone is like that, but it’s a common trend. I was in America for a week, and nearly came back sounding like Denzel Washington, kidding.😅😅😅😅 Excellent video bro, I’ve been a subscriber since day 1.
It depends on the age you migrate, it's more likely to catch an accent as a youngster than as an adult.
@@dugebuwembo True, but that guy is relatively young. And he’s been there for 20 years. No doubt that if you go to school there, you’ll sound like them. But my point is that Nigerians tend to lose it naturally, they’re not quick to try and sound Americans as soon as they arrive.
@@MosesMatsepane If you are young when you migrate there will be a lot of pressure to change your accent. This is something experienced by many immigrants, having to change yourself to fit in. This phenomenon is less likely to occur as an adult or late teen.
For some as they adapt to living in a society where a language like English is spoken more fluently an accent change naturally will come especially to those who are younger and want to speak the language in a more standard way so they fit in.
He could also be speaking with his accent because is speaking to a fella countryman. I do the same; code switching as needed
When I was a kid, I always dreamed of moving to the US one day. As a grown-up, I prefer to stay in my own country, Kenya, but I wouldn't mind visiting US as a tourist like Tayo.
Since i started following Tayo on all socials some years back, I've never felt like wasting my time watching his videos. He is true to his art. I always wish you the best Tayo, you motivate me a lot. Your lens tells a lot of stories.

I highly disagree.....She seems really gold diggish...Chasing a "luxurious" life. This "luxury" people chase around the world is what is keeping EVERYBODY separated, resulting in sad situations as the nice homeless lady is in. You lose all of your humanity chasing it. Chasing it is a selfish ambition that leaves everyone else to fend for themselves, losing your soul along the way while stepping on everyone on your way up. We are all living in another person's philosophy that has been made into OUR reality. Their reality hijacked the reality that we all, in our hearts know to be a world of compassion for humanity and left us with this fleshly shell on a dead-end path to nowhere but self endulgement. This is a documentary, not so much a review - hats off
I went to NYC last month, for just a day- and I still didn’t like it 😆. Too many people everywhere, too many cars- and too many rats and roaches crawling around; I felt like I had to immediately take a shower after walking around for an hour. I also HATED time square.
Also, NYC is wayyyy overpriced. I’m from upstate NY and have only been to the city like 5 times in my 25 years of living. I don’t understand how there are people who actually *want* to live there, but everyone’s different ig. Just totally not for me lol. Give me a farm

I watch Cash Jordan who is a realtor in NYC and I can’t believe how expensive it is to live there. When I was young, NYC seemed like a fun place to live but now that I’m older and have a family, no way. It’s definitely a fun place to visit. I have to say as a northerner from NJ moving to SC, not all Americans are the same everywhere. Each section of the country has their own unique culture.
Never been to New York but I feel like this video just gave me a preview of what to expect when I go there. Big Ups Tayo. I moved to NYC in 2003. I was fortunate to have family already there who I could draw support from, unlike the experience of the lady speaking on the street corner. NYC is tough, I mean really tough and I learnt some harsh lessons along the way. The city is not for everyone, a lot of people I met in my early years in the city eventually moved away. And many of them didn’t move because they hated the city, they had to move for basically survival. It’s getting increasingly expensive. If you can survive in NYC, you can survive and be successful anyway else. And so many chose to stay or use it as a launching pad to go somewhere else in life.
NYC is crazy expensive even Paris is expensive I'm from there but fast food in NYC far more expensive than Paris and rent price are like almost 2 times higher it seem lol saw one girl on RUclips paying like 1000 for something like 6square meter😂 if you can afford living in NYC and then move to San Antonio for example you'll live super super comfortably like a rich one lol
What lessons did you learn
@@fckfck4181 I mean...NYC pays people almost double compared to other part of USA, maybe except the Bay Area. It all evens out. New Yorkers have one of the highest median wealth in the nation. It is ridiculously expensive for visitors, but it's surprisingly manageable for people living there. They just make significantly more than almost anywhere in the world

As an American, the issues with paying for everything, the dirtyness, and the inconsiderate nature is very true, however New York and L.A. are the most extreme examples of this. You will find very hospitable people in the south like in Atlanta. And the smaller cities are very clean, far cleaner than New York or LA. And there are some very few places where the hustle and bustle is as extreme. If you can I suggest visiting an Atlanta or someplace down south, the culture is quite different from New York and other northern and western states.
I went to LA from London and loved it. I felt like it was very clean and the people were friendly. I’ve been to west Africa and I think Americans in general are more friendly and trust worthy than Africans

The video was about showing the extremely bad part of America with its struggling residents. Every American knows exactly where he visited. That's like reviewing Lagos with Ajegule or Oshodi.

True but it’s like someone visiting London. They would initially base their opinion of the UK on their experience in London or someone visiting Lagos for the first time would use that as a representation of what Nigeria is. Of course villages and smaller towns are always different to big cities in any country and I’m sure Tayo knows this.
@lola2659 NYC is an immigrant city. My town 1 hour away from NYC Is 99% native born and vastly different from NYC.
@@lola2659 Except that New York City isn't even representative of USA's largest cities. For one, ~40% of its population is foreign born.
@@zoradelaney9412 California’s foreign born population is around 27.2% of its total population; Texas 17.2%; Florida 20.6%; NJ 23%; Illinois 13.8% etc. Are these states with high immigrant population not representative of USA? The USA has the highest number of immigrants in the world. As of 2020, the number of foreign born residents were over 50 million- verified stats. What this essentially means is most states are full of immigrants so saying NY is an immigrant city and is quite unique amongst other American states is laughable. The fact remains the population of immigrants is high in the states.
@@lola2659 I would say every part of the United States has it own nuiance and cultural difference. What i am saying certain areas of the country is vastly different from New York. For example there is a wall of difference from New York vs New Orleans, vs Charleston SC, than the cities you mentioned. Also the culture in each region of the United States, does differ a great deal. For example San Diego and part of texas border Mexico there is a obvious influence due to proximity, the same you can say about other region of the country.
I'm from New York City, a mostly Black, middle income town called Saint Albans in the borough of Queens. I like this presentation overall, you're fair. I'm glad you didn't spend too much time in Times Square as that's basically a tourist spot and it's OK, but it's a tourist spot. The bigger part of Times Square is the Broadway theatre district beyond just the "square" area. NYC, you can "make it" but it kind of depends on the type of discipline you want to make it in. If you're some sort of abstract musician, you may have to teach and you won't make the salary just by music alone to bring in enough people to full venues. And there's always the issue of healthcare in the USA though that has improved with the passing of the ACA. Still, it's not perfect.
The one area you seemed to miss was Jackson Heights. You get there via a subway, 7 to 74th St. or E or F to Roosevelt Avenue, Jackson Heights. Here's the greatest thing about NYC: ethnic diversity. This is by far the most ethnically diverse part of New York City yet many tourists seem to miss this area. If you come to NYC and have any interest in the ethnic diversity here, don't miss Jackson Heights, Queens, NYC.
About the subways, the stations are hot and sometimes smelly. All of the subway cars are air-conditioned but it may not work in every subway car from time to time. Most of the subways aren't that old either, only a few are on some lines and they're being replaced slowly. The subway is crucial to NYC.
I no longer live in NYC due to the ridiculous rent and that I want to see more of nature. I live 30 minutes away in a town in New Jersey and visit NYC every week. I agree with the young woman that talked about tribes. But my tribe isn't an ethnic group but more of a group of people that share similar musical tastes or entertainment choices. I am part Caribbean in family, Bajan (Barbadian), so I do enjoy getting with the Caribbean community from time to time.
Funny thing is I don't find NYC fast paced. I see a lot of people sitting around drinking coffee then it is on to whatever they are doing. What I'm finding is people in their own group not necessarily connecting with the outer atmosphere like they do in other places. There is hustle, but there's hanging out and around too.

Great points. I was expecting him to at least ask those ladies what job they do. This is America. Jobs dey. And you get paid. It is a melting part of the world, and you have to connect with people outside your tribe. I didn't even connect with Africans to get where I wanted to be in this country. When I tried earlier on, they avoided it. It was then that I realized this is a global village.

Tayo, welcome to America! I live in Boston but have a healthy respect for those who live in New York City. I was just there a week ago and the hustle and bustle always fascinate me. As you can imagine, this is a very large country with thousands of cities that span some 3,000 miles. So you certainly got a slice of the American way of life, however, the country is complex and represents a dynamic element of the human experience. I hope you will have an opportunity to go to other regions of the US, if not on this trip in future ones. I appreciate and respect your videos! 🌹

This is a very honest review, Tayo. The only caution I would add here is that NYC is not America. It would surprise you to know that America is more rural than urban as a whole.

Someone moving from say Lagos, Nigeria would have an easier time adjusting to New York City than I would. I have no problem with people saying something negative about the USA. Some of the times I agree with them, but using that one lady's opinion of NYC and make it be about all of the USA then I have to say no.

Went to NY for the first time August ‘23 … and like he said..NOBODY CARED!!!! Everyone was in their own zone… but I more so liked that I could be in my zone and no one seemed to give two f*cks about what I was doing.. Every one was so casually dressed with comfort seeming to trump appearance. I would love to live there ❤..Oh.. I also liked how accessible everything was via public transportation.. No matter where you are everything feels like it’s right around the corner

It feels like there is an endless amount of negative media on the USA and some people refuse to consume it. Also nothing in the US is like NYC. It's not an accurate representation of the US. I think most Americans haven't even been there. So I'd suggest touring other parts of the US when you can. Blessings.

It would be like people thinking that Lagos represented the whole of Nigeria. Urban living and rural living are very different.
The tipping part is 100 accurate and your take on tipping is how I feel. It should be a service standard. Lastly, the homeless and drug issue is big for liberal ran cities in America. It feels as if people over romanticize the American dream in NYC.
The opioid epidemic started in rural America which is often not liberal, so that’s an incorrect. The tipping is because servers in some states are not covered under minimum wage so that’s how their earnings are subsidized (see history of tipping in the US which has to do with who used to compose the majority of the serving industry).

While I understand and empathize with the unfortunate fact that the hospitality incomes are terribly low, upholding an employee's basic civic rights to a fair wage shouldn't be treated as customers' responsibility. It is the responsibility of the local government to make laws that require employers to pay their employees a fair wage, so those employees don't have to rely on tips to survive in the first place...that is a basic right of every citizen in paid employment.
If constituents are too busy demanding that their fellow constituents fix this gap instead of demanding accountability from their government to change the laws, nothing will ever change and the average man on the street who has worked hard for their money will keep having to subsidize hospitality employees' income while the politician laugh their way to the bank with no repercussions.
Also, it's not always a guarantee that the tips go to the employees without the employer (the same employer who is not paying the employees a fair wage) taking a cut.
We're too busy pulling each other down to notice that the problem is not of our making or for us to fix. This is why in Europe, the tipping culture is not necessary. Because we hold our government responsible for making laws that require employers to pay their employees a fair wage for their jobs. That is a basic right of every citizen and we hold our lawmakers responsible for protecting these rights rather than demanding that our fellow citizens fix it.

Your video has just opened my eyes on why Americans on Tik-tock and RUclips are impressed by life in countries like Japan and comment why they seem to have better services, transport etc . Growing up I thought its probably one of the best cities to live in, but now I know....
It's not easy to live in these cities... its very expensive and nobody cares about you.

Hahaha 3mins and you're 10000% spot on. I lived there for 14 yrs and while what you showed was true , it's honestly not the complete story of NYC, you didn't really see the real real NYC. There are people who live a different reality from what you experienced - and I mean good reality. The city works for some but not for everyone. It wasn't for me but I respect NYC. It taught me a lot.
You visited in the heat of summer, ofcourse it’s hot. NYC is only hot between June and September. After October, it’s freezing o. Don’t be fooled by the 3 months of warmth o. Tipping culture is ridiculous in America. It's optional, but restaurants are abusing it.
Also, the homeless problem is more about mental illness than capitalism if you ask me. Also, cities like NYC, DC and San Francisco are more impacted because the social amenities that the homeless need are located in the cities. NYC is a different beast. I don't really think any other city in America can compare to it. NYC is gritty. I love it. I can't live there though.

I was born and raised in NYC and I now live in Dominica in the Caribbean. I've lived in the Caribbean for about 7 years now. Your Honest Review - the weird smell, the energy, the constant noise, the dirt - it actually made me temporarily nostalgic. Once I had my first child, I was ready to leave there. It was interesting "visiting" w you. Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect on my next trip home since COVID, but it looks like things are largely back to normal... garbage, rats, don't care attitude and all!
People here tell me I walk fast. Guess you can take the girl out of New York but... LOL
It is worse with the homelessness. More mental health issues too. It has gotten more violent than pre-pandemic. Also rents have skyrocketed.
You ain't missing anything! I was born in early 1960s and was raised in Washington Heights/Harlem. My family & I moved out of NYC area to the Carolinas 3yrs ago after buying a house here. I visited NYC a year ago and saw the grime, congestion, mass homelessness, subways and high prices. I met up with some old HS friends in central park and visited a museum. Being among the throngs of people whom I really don't find much in common with had me feeling like I used to feel when I lived in NYC. I had fun going through my old stomping grounds etc but after a week as I headed to the airport to go back south I had NO nostalgic feelings and it will be a long time before I visit NYC again. I had a lot of fun coming up in NYC and good memories attending NYC public schools, hanging with my homies, playing bball, chilling on park benches going to movies on the OLD 42nd street (not that disney world bullsh*t tourist magnet it's become), hitting the dance clubs (pre-cell phone days) but that was then and this is now. To me, NYC is like an old worn out pair of sneakers that you once cherished when they were fresh and new---them days are over and I've tossed those old sneakers into the garbage.
Yeah, OLD Times Square had the big Gray's Papaya on the corner! I caught the end of that as a teen in the 90's! A little nostalgia is fine for me, but I'm with you. I'm good where I am @@JeezWhiz1 😆

BTW I was born in Morrisania in the Bronx, and I grew up in the Flatlands area in Brooklyn. South of Flatbush. I lived in Harlem for a while - 116th and Frederick Douglass, Morningside Heights (before it became SoHa, Kennedy Fried Chicken was across from Church's Fried Chicken, open 24 hours, dealers and addicts around in front, broken vials and shafts of used needles around the sidewalk int he morning. ) I used to take the C train to work. Good times.

I live in NYC, I love the fast paced culture. Also what’s beautiful is that you will never get bored because there’s always something to do. However once you get into a routine the city has its negatives. Not everyone is partying every weekend and enjoying life also the hustle and bustle of the city does get old. There are other cities that are far more laid back yet still exciting and you can live a better lifestyle for a cheaper cost. Also with the tip thing, that guy was rude, you are never obligated to leave a tip if you are getting your food to-go. I usually only tip if I’m eating inside at a restaurant or getting food delivered.

I used to drive trucks to Vermont and Maine alot through route 87 through Albany and I loved upstate New York alot..That is when I realized New York is such a huge state

While you’re here, go to a museum, library, gallery, broadway show, concert. NY has world class art and culture. Also check out other places in the city, the beaches Coney Island, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island, there’s so much more to see. Queens is the most linguistically diverse place on earth. Too bad you didn’t attend the West Indian Day parade on Labor Day despite it’s limits the city has a lot to offer.

Hmm! This video has really changed my perspective about some things. Normally when people living down here in Nigeria consider relocating abroad, we imagine only the good side and think everything is rosy abroad, maybe its because of how they paint their country to be to the outside world. I think everyone planning to relocate to any foreign country should do a thorough research on the good and the bad side of that country so as to be mentally prepared and also be able to make sustainable plans on how to survive . Most people leave Nigeria to abroad with a wrong perspective. They just think once u land America, boom u get a job and the rest is history. About the dirts littered on the streets 🙁 seriously I used to think it’s in Nigeria alone one can find such. Thank you so much for this unbiased review of America and also please consider making a video for Canada because a lot of Nigerians are interested in relocating to that country including I myself.
