    Great video. Coming from a consulting standpoint, I've experienced clients prescribing research methods for the research teams to use. In that scenario it's important to be tactful about it- for example not saying "well that's stupid", and saying things like "I hear you, but what if we did it in such and such way?".

    Hi Aona,
    I have gone through most of your UX videos and each of them as aided me to learn, understand and empathise better with the stream. But the video on UX Traps is hidden gem! The information with examples is nothing less than treasure to me. In my technical interview round I was given two trap questions punched in one! Specific method & finding best alternative - the moment I heard the question, your video flashed in my mind & with ease I navigated through tricky question! That's the impact you had on my interview. Thank you for armouring & enabling me to become better version of myself! More power to you!💯🏅👏

    Hello Aona, I found this video very, very helpful! I have been a User Researcher for 6+ years now but I have never really been part of a product environment. Now, that I am in the process of interviewing for a tech organisation, this information comes at just the right time. In fact, in my first round of technical interview, I was asked a trap question (no. 3, to be precise). I off course, didn't know that's what it was at that time! While I attempted it to the best of my ability, I wasn't sure how well I did. I was pleasantly surprised to later find out that I have advanced :) I am now in the middle of the prep for my onsite interviews. Thanks again, appreciate your guidance :)

    Great video! Thanks. Recently, I had an interview with a DeFi company. But I didn't fall into any of these traps. But they didn't offer me a job anyway. Maybe they are looking for something else. But I think they didn't see these traps as a trap. They were genuinely asking me to answer their questions. Do you have any suggestions for these type of interviews? Thanks.

  • @jalexanderevans

    I fell into a trap today when she asked if my research is more generative or evaulative. Should have said both, but I'd actually never heard of the dichotomy before so I said evaluative and just detailed the research I do 😂 whoops

    I love #4 because it is something I always get stuck on. I do have a question in relation to it. What if it is a feature that is similar to what other competitor products have, but this particular feature is a bit different? Other than finding out if users currently are using this type of feature, would you also dig into how it compares to the competitor's feature?

    • @AonaTalks
      @AonaTalks  3 года назад

      What you are describing sounds like a general concept testing scenario? I would figure out what _exactly_ the difference is and evaluate whether that is a _true_ user need.

    • @alexandhanah4762
      @alexandhanah4762 2 года назад

      @@AonaTalks This is an old thread, but I'm having trouble understanding when to take the "analyze competitor" approach vs. the "concept testing" approach. Doesn't concept testing break your rule of "don't ask about future behavior"? Thanks for helping a newbie understand,

  • @alrightride
    @alrightride 3 года назад +1

    Hey Aona, could you elaborate more on the future behavior scenario. Would you take the same approach if it was for a product for which there is no past precedence and hence no past behavior to indicate future behavior? How do you justify qualitative research in this case which is typically a much smaller sample size..to justify launching a product that is looking for mass uptake?

    • @AonaTalks
      @AonaTalks  3 года назад +1

      You can almost *always find past behavior to guide future strategy because new technology is created to solve for a real need/pain. Take Uber as an example, it didn’t exist, but taxis and the pain of getting from point A to point B always existed. Same with the famous Ford example - cars didn’t exist, but slow transportation (ie horses are slow) was always a pain. And you don’t need a big sample size to dig out that insight.

    • @RuthMcDougal
      @RuthMcDougal 3 года назад

      I had an interview that involved trap #2. Three headphone designs (models A,B,C) which is the one that should be taken to market? The only difference was the “company” really wanted to take model C to market. I asked clarifying questions, but wasn’t sure what they were really trying to accomplish because everything I asked was met with, “we just want to launch model C in less than 6 months” and that all the models were really similar, model C just is faster to make.” I was kinda stumped after. I guess it happens in real world scenarios where a company has often made their mind up on a product and wants to do things as fast as possible.

    • @foolsmate
      @foolsmate 3 года назад +1

      @@RuthMcDougal Maybe they were trying to see how you tackle obstacles like this. It could be that the company (you were interviewing with) culture is like this and they wanted to test your negotiation skills on how you can convince cross-functional team members to do research on the designs even though they're perceived the same. Model C being faster to make doesn't make it better than other designs.
