I'm a security guard I don't have anything to do but grind my language for 12 hours. I love doing Grammer work books translations and practices. I enjoy them it helps me way more than any "natural method". i have workbooks full of grammer and vocab.
I don't have a problem keeping motivated, while at the same time I wonder if learning Spanish is just a big waste of time. I see all these videos and such saying it takes so many years to get conversational. I'm 74 years old and have to wonder if I'm just going to be dead before I get anywhere worthwhile.
I’m 76 and at year 2 I could understand the gossip at the laundromat. I spend a lot of time on self talk. Last week at the mercado I couldn’t reach the eggs and a couple was speaking Spanish near me. I blurted out ayúdame , por favor, los heuvos allí as I pointed th the eggs. The guy was surprised but he got them for me as I profusely thanked him in Spanish. It just happens. Keep going. My family lives to be 90 and language learning beats Word Jumbles and hokey games for seniors. At the end of the day I have accomplished something.
If anything at an older age language learning is more important as it keeps your brain fit. The brain is like any muscle and needs exercise so don't give up!
@@Evildea Good point. Maybe I should instead learn how to play the piano. Oh wait! I don't have time to learn that either. Ha ha! I'll pull out my Spanish grinding. Thank you for the encouragement!
@@Skiis44 Wow! Thank you for the encouragement! When you say, "self talk", do you mean that you practice talking with yourself making make-believe conversations and talking about your day, etc? That's a cool story about the eggs!
You’re one of those rare individuals who truly understand the nuances of language learning. I’m confident I’ll make much better progress thanks to your videos. Honestly, your grasp of how linguistics works surpasses even some professional linguists. Framing the learning process as 'grinding' is spot-on. It’s clearly intuitive for you given your background, but it was a revelation for me, despite my fair share of RPG grinding in the past. Looking forward to your upcoming videos from China!
It is only midnight here! 😂 I grind after work at 5am. Remind me, how many words do you learn in a day? I am trying to read novels, and adding those to my book for grinding. I should do a video on how I learn languages one day. I have a few cooking and canning videos up, but I want to branch out my youtube to all of my interests. My grinding is different than yours. Obviously. I am on day 125 of my Traverse deck (sustained because there are no streak freezes or recovers). I am on chapter 104 of my Chinese audio lessons. I have watched so many shows and hours of Chinese TV. I don't have a lot of time since I have three jobs, but I do what I can at 5am to 6am when I get off work for one job and start my next job. It isn't as much time as you do, but I get what I can done everyday. I know sleeping and studying isn't a thing, but I only get 4 to 5 hours to sleep everyday, so I put on audio reviews of my sentences while I sleep. I would love to see China again! I was there in 2005. Could you do a vlog in Chinese yet?
Excuses... excuses... On average, I study 15 a day, some days less, some days more. But I'm more focussed on fully understanding the word or structure in question than the actual number of words. Your life sounds metal as! I'm surprised you get anything done with 3 jobs!. I could probably pull off a Chinese vlog although it would be no where near my Esperanto vlog quality.
keeping a learning log is great. i keep one for anything i'm learning, it helps to show me how far i've come but also as a quick reference back if i ever need it. when i've traveled i rarely had time or energy to study new words from my decks. what has worked for me is to just focus on keeping up the reviews on anki. as long as i did that i considered it a win while only adding new words that i ran into organically throughout the day. i would jot them down in my pocket notebook and then at night i'd add them to my deck. so i would only really be adding words that seemed like they were a gap in what i needed for daily communication and then adding those. it was usually fewer words than i normally studied daily. i usually extended the reduced new words for a week or so after i got back because traveling messes with my brain and i need time to resettle.
That's my plan. I'll primarily just job down new sentences / words that I needed to learn during the day and quickly add them to my deck at night. I'll also reduce the overall reviews I'll probably need to do as well but I'll test that when I arrive.
Hi, thanks for your informative videos. Grinding is very powerful but how can one move from just memorizing, to express new thoughts that they haven't ground yet.
The production of new thoughts, and consequently spoken sentences, naturally emerges as your brain subconsciously identifies patterns in the sentences you’ve practiced. With increased practice, these patterns become strengthened, facilitating the expression of new thoughts via spoken language.
I have started a diary too but i used it to write a couple of sentences a day and also writing a snapshot snout what i had watched and listened to that week. 😅❤️ I need to maybe write down some mew words too since the summary page seems kind of empty still. Thanks for rhe inspiration! Maybe I will shsre my language learning diary someday!
I plan to record my education videos like normal from probably the hotel room so should be fine. Plus I made a bunch before I went so I can focus on my language studies :D

So here's my problem, I started learning Esperanto around a year ago, made it pretty far (maybe A2ish?) then lost motivation and stopped learning. I'm wanting to get back into it using some version of the grinding method that you detail in this video series, but I don't know where to start as far as journaling the words that I've retained after all this time. Do I need to start from scratch? Look at a frequency list of Esperanto words and write down the ones that I think I have a good enough grasp of? Any advice that you can give would be greatly appreciated. Love the videos, and I hope you are enjoying your trip to China.
Just start the diary from whatever point your at. The purpose is the show your progress overtime. So if you're alrady intermediate then just start it from there. My diary starts from when I was low intermediate Chinese as I didnt keep one from the start.
Great video, as always. Hafe a safe trip to China! A travel vlog would be nice. Small paranoid note: last time you went on a one month trip to China and disappeared for a year. So now, I guess we can expect you to be gone for a year and a half 😅😶🌫️
do you always make 50 example sentences? Thinking of a video I saw recently where they say it takes 20 intervals of seeing a word for it to "stick", so wondering if that may apply as well to structures that you may not need more than 20 examples, especially with the reviews in Anki
I make 6-15 example sentences. 50 sentences is how many cards I end up with in the end as I'm not just learning the one word but multiple words in context.

@Evildea i recently started french after I grinded esperanto for a year and a half. La Franca estas Tre simpla pro esperanto kaj la angla.

You need one or two years. In my opinion focus in time instead. 2000 hours is a better and stronger mindset
