I'm sitting in a café and watching this video. I can't practice the techniques as I watch. But I will definitely re-watch this. I visited speech therapists for years in two different stages of my life, first when I was a kid, second when I was practicing for my master's thesis defense. I usually speak better during and after each period. But, my anxiety will take control of my life sooner or later, and I will stutter again.
Stuttering is still a problem for me, but i'm super grateful for where I am now. Slowing down, breathing and not overthinking is the key for me personally. Its all about practice and repetition.
An important thing to keep in mind when talking about stuttering is that there are two big categories in stuttering. People who stutter because they're stressed, mind moves faster than their mouth, don't understand their subject, ... etc. Then there is stuttering as an actual born-with disability, which, for a lot of people, can't be fully removed/adapted to in their life.
You don't stutter in your head, in your thoughts. Close your eyes. See the words you're going to say. See each word individually. Say the word. See the next word, say it. Practice. Practice. Practice. Then look in the mirror and practice.
William Parry is the most relevant speech pathologist to people who stutter. You can watch his youtube videos which resonates so much to a stutterer’s experiences. Just watching them makes you feel that your stutter is nothing .
I hear you James. I’m now 50 and have over come stuttering. I can’t you medical or medicine advise because it’s against the law. But the way I cured my stuttering is through medication that calm me down. In the beginning I was drowsy from it but once I was able to correct the right amount with my doctor than my stuttering began to disappear. I could go on interviews and not stutter one bit. Changed my life. Talk to your doctor. I did my research and my doctor oversee my progress and now I don’t stutter as hard as I did when I was younger. 👍👍🙏🙏🙏
Wow Vinh, incredible tips, I hadn’t even thought of these communication barriers before, however applying what you mention here it instantly helped me communicate better!- Thank you Vinh, you have seriously improved my communication so so much!
Hey Vinh, thank you so much for your guidance and master classes. They really helped me a lot to improve my English communication skills as I am a native Spanish speaker. Thank you so much
@askvinh, thank you for being generous by sharing your wealth of knowledge on communications. I have taken your Virtual Masterclass, there is not a moment that I regretted doing so! Very helpful. Am still working on managing nervousness during speeches. Looking forward to register to the live workshop in March.
Loved the video, thanks. Additional question to point one. I don’t feel like I stutter because of anxiety but rather because I am thinking of what I want to say next while Im already speaking. Which leads to grammar errors or using wrong words, cause in my head i am already on the next phrase. I noticed that it happens even more when I prepare for sth, because in my mind i already know what i want to say, so i try to remember it while already speaking. Thanks💕
🔴 I wanna ask that, the tips which you give to improve communication are good enough, these tips are for those who don't have any technical problem in speaking. But there are many people like me who are suffering from "LISP". like I'm suffering from a LISP in which I cant say the word "S" it sounds like "F". So my question is how to communicate with a LISP? because it really breaks my confidence while communicating.
Man I have always had a light stutter my life but notice my stomach being empty when I finis talking because I am scared of stuttering. Gonna s these breathing exercises. Thanks a lot ❤
As a person who stutters, I wish there was a different word for actual stuttering (the speech difference) and stuttering out of nervousness. This video is not for us pws 🙈
my reason to stuttering is maybe brain problem, year after year i find to struggle keeping normal rate of speech,i cant find any good words to use in my native language but on english i have countless options not use if i become more native to english than my mother language or i just become more stupid with the time passing
I have a stutter, problem pronouncing words, and an annoying voice. I try all the techniques my speech therapist tells me to do and I still stutter and have problems pronouncing words😢.I am becoming more depressed over the years not being able to have a conversation with people
My mann its all in your head my advice o for you i to just start speaking whats on ur mind without the care on the world let your emotion speak let yourself be entrance with anything do this for 5 mins a day then talk to your family or friends with this mindset yall be suprise of how a yapper you are its all about confidence my brothaa
I'm sorry my friend ❤ It's not your fault, stuttering is actually neurological and it's normal that you can't fix it. You can't 'fix' adhd either, you just learn to deal with it. I suggest the youtube channel 'open stutter', a lot of helpful stuff on there.
Vinh!! Great tips and strategies but if you ask many of us that stutter or use to stutter what’s the worst word or worst thing is? It’s our own name and the first the word. Once you get stuck there. It’s nearly impossible to get out that first word. We know what that first word is but can’t get say the first letter or sound. I.e. I want a sprite but can’t say it so I say the easiest next word, coke. 🤦🏻♂️.
Alot of the time if i dont speak really quickly and I leave gaps in my speech people will interrupt me and even f i continue speaking everybody is listening to them now. Is there any way to stop that from happening?
Hello Vinh, pls I'd like you to really help me with this maybe a video and I'm ready to improve at this point. And it is that, sometimes when I talk to people I'm not too familiar with or in front of a stage, I feel like my lips shake somehow and I just don't feel like myself, I hope you could pls help on that.
Vin, a question, when let say i slow down and/or use pause, some people might take the chance to cut in and shift the topic. How should i use the pause properly?
I expect that you may not fully understand stuttering, which affects around 1% of the population. It's not as simple as you might think. I am a person who stutters, and sometimes I stutter even when speaking with the people closest to me! There are several ways to address stuttering, and the best among them are stuttering control programs. If you are a stutterer, take the initiative and work on improving it 👍.
Is it jist me who stutters and forgets words and gave hard because of that??i speak 3 languages and i mixup the pronunciation and words and completely end up making different words. Also i know and alot of things but i can't bring by self to explain for example i hear a conversation and the person is. Saying why would the other person do such thing I do kind of get the the reason that might be possible but I'm not able convey it,i don't have words or way of explaining
I’m sure he is referring to a fully functioning individual without any genetic predisposition or neurological disorders. But for some it is absolutely irreversible.
Its also a matter of intelligence and intelligence type. If you are very intelligent but not of the linguistic type then your brain goes at such a speed that not only your mouth cannot follow but the idea you are trying to convey can change mid sentence aswell. Take Elon Musk for example 😆

Oh my god. God sent u to help people like us. Thank you, Vinh.
Stuttering is one of my biggest challenge that’s I still struggle very hard to fix 😖😩
You don't stutter in your head. Try this. Close your eyes and see what you're going to say. Now repeat it slowly. Practice. Practice. Practice.

As a filipino, english isn't my first language. So, I stutter. I mix Tagalog (when it's not scripted) to talk English
Thankful advice btw

Picture yourself. Formally dressed, smelling pleasantly, body well belt and with a car two times your worth with a fluent and clear accent.
Vin, a question, when let say i slow down and/or use pause, some people might take the chance to cut in and shift the topic. How should i use the pause properly?
When I slow down I almost go to sleep.
you wont stutter if you are asleep *dobule touch on side of forehead*

I’m not sure if stuttering is a choice or is voluntary for some. It’s a Neurological Disorder or Speech Pathological Issue.
It’s an emotional trigger that can be reprogrammed.
@ maybe in some cases but not all, not even most.
@ It’s mostly neurological or genetic. Emotions can worsen what is already there but those are scientifiacllly and statistically the main causes.
If you slow down other guys interept and start there conversation say there point people dont have payient to wsit
Is this fool's name pronounced 'Vince Young'? Lol
