I watch it once a day and tbf clearly uses it as a dopamine gain so im not trying to justify it but I dont think we should shame people for it unless youre really struggling. The industry itself is another topic for someone who want to go down the shaming route. Also people often seem to confuse not masturbating with not watching porn.

      @@henryschmid2808 Ive actually tried quitting for two weeks. That’s long enough I feel after literally watching every day for years. I stopped watching it after being depressed with my dating life and started feeling pathetic watching porn. However I didn’t notice any benefits by staying off but neither did I have the urge to watch it. If someone heard me say I watch it everyday they would most likely say I’m addicted right? But if someone was truly addicted they would have a hard time stopping, same goes for caffeine. Can stop whenever I want to, however I don’t really want to because it’s literally a source of dopamine and makes every day a little more enjoyable. So yea we shouldn’t be shaming porn but discuss the good and the ugly. It’s a rabbit hole for sure for how deep you want to go in that discussion on how it affects society etc. But for me personally I feel like there are far too many that advocates porn only to be negative. Seeing that so many struggle with a pornaddiction intrigues me and really wouldn’t say I’m addicted myself how bad that may sound.

But after some time, just random day a 2.5 months ago I woke up and choose to re-puzzle myself, and then I found this channel that has helped me a lot mentally to transform my inner self. So after 9 years of constantly destroying myself, I went on a new trip, and I failed. Then I realised that streak of nofap is not too much important, but rather the clean mind and not feel the urge to do that. Got 3 times to 5 6 days and went back to 0 and felt so bad because of that. Brain just started to learn a new ways to pleasure itself, and after a few very hard times to abstinate and failed, I am now at 20th day and not even feel the urge for that and honestly I feel so much powerful than before even starting all this. Don't count days, let days count you.

    It's the same as any other addiction, no matter in which form it comes.
    Try to phrase it differently, you don't get addicted rather you program your body.
    So stop doing it and body will find something else as that is how it works, it adapts.
    If you do it constantly, you encourage your body to want more and put it at the top of a mountain of pleasure based on the amount of dopamine that you get from it so just learn to understand that it is not necessarily an enemy, but rather just an order that you set and that your body follows unless you flip the switch and guide it to something different.

    • @ember9747
      @ember9747 Месяц назад +17

      I can relate. Everything that's fun will spike your dopamine and in my opinion that's fine. You will develop a desire to further engage in that action ("addiction"/"compulsion"), but if the action isn't harmful there's nothing wrong with being addicted to it, though the word has a negative connotation. I know most drugs and hyperpalatable food is harmful so you don't want to get addicted to those, but I haven't heard of any negative effects of music, so it's fine to be addicted to it IMO. Educational podcasts same thing - they're beneficial instead of harmful so it's fine, even good to be addicted to those.
      As for the concern of desensitizing yourself to pleasure, what's the point of having a hypersensitive pleasure system if you never stimulate it? If you want to live hedonically as I do, doing pleasurable (but not harmful) things is the best way to go about that, even though the pleasure is partly (not fully, unless neurotoxic doses of stimulants) "canceled out" via desensitization/tolerance to future pleasures. Enjoy! I cut music out of my life for a short while because I thought "dopamine spikes=bad, addiction=bad", but it worsened my quality of life.

    100% agree with the last point about the steak. Another example of this that I've seen is when you enjoy a black coffee or just milk as opposed to when you take it with sugar. Many people take their coffee with sugar and milk and say I can never stop it just taste too good but once you let it go it's not a big deal anymore.

  • @oogabooga357
    @oogabooga357 Месяц назад +15

    How your diet affects taste is quite interesting. I have removed a lot of processed food, sugar and salt from my diet and I can say with certainty that I taste things more clearly. After some time your brain will rewire its connections between taste and the nutrients in your food to such a degree that unhealthy things will start to taste bad.
    I would guess that this increased sensitivity for what's in your food is due to attenuation of the signals in your dopamine pathways related to food and perhaps a strengthening of the signals your taste receptors generate when coming in contact with the nutrients in the food.
    If you find it hard to eat clean you can think of this as motivation: The longer you eat good clean food, the more bad food is going to taste bad and good food taste good. You would be returning your sense of taste to its original function; you would be letting your sense of taste guide you to what's good for you.

In my experience, I've been addicted and sometimes very badly but never to the point of doing it more than once a day. There are tests that recommend that one counters his lust with something spiritual or a simplistic workout. Such as getting the lust urge, and telling yourself that this act is immoral and then doing an act of prayer and change the thought in your brain while it is happening. The goal is to not be hyper focused on the lust while it is there. Something physical would be a simple workout, like getting down and doing 20 pushups and doing it again.

    We should also be talking about tangible barriers here. For instance, the variable which impacts the most on suicide rates are physical barriers that prevent the act of suicide, epidemiologically. In this context, the porn addict should be encourajed to plan a busy day filled with activities. One who works hard all day has no time nor energy to masturbate frequently. A busy mind focused on productive things acts as a physical barrier to the habit.

    I think we're living in a time now where we're just beginning to understand how porn viewing has affected and is affecting our brains. Especially when we talk about porn addiction and the effects it has on a person's life. Time will tell. Now that AI has come into the picture, it doesn't look good. Not at all.

I am a porn addict 3 months in recovery right now symptoms are very brutal and although I hear a lot of people talk about drugs or allcohol which are very important also and more dangerous still we do have a ton of stories, documentaries, podcasts, books and movies about these specific addictions. It is literally 100% the opposite. If there is no porn, you haven’t rewired your brain to chase immediate lust and release with zero effort. If there is no porn, you are somewhat innocent by design - to truly only be aroused by whoever you are with and build intimacy with. Porn robs you of the ability to be intimate.

    Many individuals who engage in watching pornography often do so because they experience feelings of loneliness. It's important to acknowledge that this isn't necessarily a negative coping mechanism; rather, it can be a way to deal with emotional isolation. Personally, I've been actively working on managing my sexual urges for the past four weeks, with the goal of abstaining for an entire year. I believe it’s natural for anyone, especially someone who is a virgin, to find themselves drawn to pornography as a way to explore their sexuality and understand their desires. It can feel validating to seek out these experiences, especially when grappling with the reality of being alone. I understand these feelings deeply, as I've lived through periods of solitude myself.

    For the vast majority of people out there, pornography is harmless. As with anything, a small percentage of people will have problems with it (as with drugs, alcohol, gambling, etc). Especially in places like the United States, where there's an incredibly strong Puritanical history, sex is often framed as being "bad" or "dirty", which itself creates a culture of shame. It's this puritanical culture and outlook that actually causes the vast majority of harm. Everything in moderation.

    "We have no idea what effect pornography has on the development of male sexuality..." What a strange note to end the conversation on. I started with soft porn on HBO in the 80's, real porn by like the 90's, and I have a healthy relation with my wife and two healthy children. I watch porn about once a week. My wife knows but I don't do it in front of her. I don't think porn or any dopamine source is bad. However, some people have biological, environmental, and developmental factors that make them prone to addiction. The drugs or dopamine source is not the problem. Addiction is the problem. Some people have the ability to control it most do not. That is why approximately 74% of Americans are overweight and I bet most of them drink alcohol and smoke as well.

      The problem is more that we see generations now that are grown up with the internet that acts as hyper stimulus for almost everything. 15 year olds can access porn without a problem and get addicted also because their brain is not fully developed yet. For these people we don't know what the effects will be later in the future. The amount of porn available is really not comparable to that in the 80's or 90's and it is way easier accessible. The same that you can't compare people starting porn at 30 years and older, who have a developed brain, with teenagers starting porn, whose brain is definitely not developed yet. These differences are the the unknown and the whole systematic issue

      Addiction is a symptom, not a problem. The symptom of pornographic addiction is a response to the poor socialization and sense of community many men in Western societies experience. When people's lives lack a sense of purpose and meaning in the form of social bonds and communal engagement they anesthetize themselves with pleasure to numb their absence. Instead of connecting to technology men need to become conditioned to pro-actively connecting to the world around them. To make it better for themselves and posterity. That's the problem and solution forward.

    I think the more important discussion is not solely about porn but about lust in general. Sexual-cravings/lust are the strongest desire we have and if you dont learn to control your impulses around that you can wreck havoc to your relationship, be stuck in never ending non fulfilling hookups rather than finding love, or (in the case of not having luck with dating) become a bitter sexually dissatisfied loser. There is no dissatisfaction when you let go of that desire as much as you can. Its the most liberating thing ever. Its no surprise that Jesus thought that even looking with lust at a women is already a sin. Or that Buddhist monks make celibacy vows. Lust is the strongest psychological force, so we have to be extra careful with it.

    • @stoiccrane4259
      @stoiccrane4259 19 дней назад +2

      Absolutely. Pornography use is more of a spiritual problem than a secular one. Those who are skeptical about the power and principles of religious traditions turn to modernity for explanation, as a substitute. Porn addiction and addiction in general tends to be a symptom instead of inherent problems. People turn to addictive outlets as a form of either stress relief, escapes from underlying unaddressed personal trauma, or as compensatory behaviors to fill a void in some unfulfilled area of life. Men turn to porn when their socially isolated and lack a sense of communal engagement and purpose. The solution is to encourage them to contribute pro-actively as members of their communities instead of being alone in front of a computer screen excessively in their spare time in a way that yield to infantile, hedonistic behaviors.

    For me, porn is only a concern if I am in a relationship. I haven't been in a relationship for years and I self-pleasure in the evening. Not every evening. Sometimes with porn and other times with my imagination while in bed. I don't believe in 'addiction' but I do understand 'habits.' Adddiction is harsh in my opnion. Moderation works for me and I enjoy porn from time to time late in the evening. If I chose to be in a relationship I will ask my partner if they would like to watch with me. If they say 'no' then that's fine with me and I will leave it alone. All or nothing has NEVER worked for me with anything. I moderate my behavior and practice self-control/self-mastery. For example. I don't drink but I have a full bar for those friends who do.....Self-mastery is key. I"m not fearful of anything and I do not believe in 'Addiction.' I'm old. We once called negative behavior 'habits.' Any habit can be broken in a month of dedication. On the topic of 'clearing my mind.' My mind is clear. And, a healthy sex life is GOOD FOR YOU! Why 'cut out' something 'good?' Makes zero sense. Might as well be a monk! LOL People take this subject far far far too seriously. And, I have a A Psychology Degree from a great University. Bottom line is this: If you are in a relationship, you'll probably need to drop the porn. If you live alone....enjoy your body and create a sex life for yourself.

    I can absolutely related to the steak thing huberman talks about . As an Indian I drank tea with sugar . All the teas even with different kind of leaves started to taste the same . I actually felt what is the difference between all these. Then I went into a sugar cut . The difference in taste was just so huge. I only tasted sugar back then . Now I can feel all the difference . Same is in the case of spicieness in Indian diets . I couldn't enjoy all the food because of all the spieciness . Then I started taking mild food . Now in almost everything I eat i can enjoy all the flavours and feel everything. It's huge .

      curious -- is there an optimal frequency for taking in spicy foods where you don't get the same blunting effect, or have you cut it out more or less completely?

    I grew up watching porn 12-26 and it ruined my brain. I'm 35 , I havent masturbated to porn in 8 years and I suffer from intrusive thoughts and shame. Its difficult to understand what a healthy sexual relationship is like.
    I quit masturbaiting because it was another form of un healthy stimulation that was making it difficult to deal with sexual urges. I had a sexual relationship recently and I could feel my unhealthy arousals coming back to haunt me.

      It might help to try to put a positive spin on arousal. It could be that you're repressing the whole as your experience was negative and damaging, but there is a good and healthy place in life for those feelings. If you're able to welcome them and observe and don't act on them they won't control you as easily

    I wish this covered a lot more facts, studies, or effects. I feel trying to relate this to food and stating as something as a "fact" that such as that your stomach "knows" just opens up a world of subjectivity and I think this entire clip majorly failed because of this extreme subjectivity weakening the rest of the content. It seems most of the value added here was by Dr. Peterson who spoke much more objectively of the confirmed challenges that pornography brings especially to teenage males, but Huberman should've been coming from more of an objective position to drive the content essential to the conversation rather than wasting time, making any potential arguments on harms of pornography weaker. Not everyone suffers from overeating that doesn't eat "clean," which is what he is suggesting. I don't believe these tiny subfactors regarding food are the strong talking points that should exist on the topic of pornography. If pornography attacks the ability to connect with a spouse or prevents social progression with the opposite sex, you are either dealing with the potential for ruining a family or failing to reach the potential to start a family. On the other hand, how many examples can objectively be given that would suggest that eating processed food generally ruins the potential for a "happily ever after" that real "addiction" so strongly opposes. If you have no better arguments against the effects of pornography than using food analogies, then I think you should wait to publish content until you do, because they certainly exist. I think the links to food come off as additional agendas being pushed rather than showing a real concern about the effects of pornography.

    I gave up porn for a few months when my sex drive plummeted for various reasons. Noticed no difference. Started watching again after that. Still no difference. Perhaps it's just me.
