My Grandmother had a woven copper dress. Yes, the whole dress, 20's style short dress made of fine copper thread. It looked so unique, and part of the strap was oxidized to green. I don't know what happened to that dress, but it was the most unique thing I have ever seen.
She should make a dress using tons of iridescent green beetle wings. They sell those at amazon. Some come in bags of 300. They are not heavy and would look really good. I think she should make a dress of that....that would look amazing
Probably too late for this now, but I'd recommend putting a sheer/nude fabric sort of slip on beneath the dress whenever you wear it, to help your skin not smell like pennies but also to reduce redness from the metal touching your skin. Gotta say I do love the variation of color given by the pennies though, shiny versus the mucky and everything in between. Very cool to look at. You honestly could just display it on a mannequin at a museum if you didn't want to wear it again, I'm sure someone would display it!
All she has to do is soak the dress in coke overnight. The phosphoric acid cleans the oxides, removing the dirt and rust. Lemon juice works pretty well too
absolute couture you don't give yourself enough credit Fashion houses would have a team of 20 people making a dress like this you're incredible~ thank you for always going that obsessive extra mile
You cannot wear this in Vegas in summer you'd burn your skin off 😬 but indoors or for a quick red carpet walk, this is hella cool. A girl in my high school made a dress entirely out of folded starburst wrappers. Not even gkue, just all folded together. I can't imagine that level of patience but here you are and there she is, so... it exists. And it's impressive as heck
@@scappley1735 yeah, this is one of the reasons why actual mail is worn with an undershirt-- a padded undershirt, so you don't just bruise straight through it when someone tries to stab you, but that's not exactly a going concern with a scale dress. maybe padded shoulders tho, to disperse the weight there some? else you'd end up with bruised shoulders after a few hours.
Hi! Since this dress is essentially chainmail, the weight can be relocated from your shoulders to your waist with a belt. you can also make the straps broader. I'd love to see this project continue, and comfort seems to be the number one problem.
Well, scalemail, but a lot of the same principles apply, having a corset styled back would also help transfer half the weight to the waist, as well as making it easier to adjust the hips to the point that it could much easier be donned or doffed, the next step would be making it practical to sit in, with chain mail this is easy, but scalemail would probably need some adjustments in how the scales are arranged or something.

If I remember correctly, scale mail was often made with a leather backing so it didn't pinch as much. That is if a warrior didn't already wear a layer of padding anyway. Adding a thin layer of leather or cloth would probably make the dress a little more comfortable and less cold when put on.
Yes. Scale mail was usually sewn directly into a liner of some sort (either leather or cloth) in order to reinforce the armor and give more surface area for the scales to rest against the body. Oddly enough, since none of these would have been worn directly on the skin anyway, she actually accidentally hit on a different type of scale armor at the very beginning called lamellar armor, in which the scales are sewn together horizontally instead of overlapping. This gave more flexibility and less weight at the cost of more solid protection.
Yes, it definitely needs some sort of lining. I’m surprised she didn’t think of that. At minimum, it would’ve come in handy for creating more comfortable & secure breast plates. God forbid her dress breaks at a boob & she has a Jackson style dress malfunction.
Fun fact you're right about on point on how long it used to take to make Chainmail in medieval times. Around a month and half to two months was the norm for a tailored chainmail.
As someone who makes maille, I am impressed with how quickly you got your dress done! A full suit of armor often takes 50-60 hours to make using either steel or aluminum rings. Someone who was experienced in chain maille could probably make something similar to your dress using only metal, but it would take a good 30-40 hours. If you ever do something similar in the future (I know, it's a crazy amount of work) I recommend using a belt to take the weight of your shoulders, or to wear padding underneath the shoulder pieces. (Edit: I do think it is lovely) Also wider straps on the shoulders for weight distribution would have also helped. If your smaller chested, you probably have never noticed this problem, but it is a bra problem for larger chested women. Weight distribution, it is a thing. OH, and corsets also were for this reason as well as shapewear. All those crinolines, hoops skirts, petticoats, and over skirts weighed a lot also. Distributing the weight over the entire torso and hips made it easier to wear.
@@martinhg98 making the waist tighter wouldnt be that possible with a dress in this style without some significant alterations. She had to slide in from the bottom of the dress, meaning it has to be able to go over the widest part of the body the hips or the shoulders(depending on your frame). A few atoms of the metal will end up left on your hands though so unless washed afterwards a faint amount of the smell might form once your body oil is allowed to return, but that would likely be unnoticeable
I've had this fantasy dress idea for awhile: Scale mail mermaid dress made out of mother of pearl scales. Imagine it being like mermaid armor. I've never worked on dresses or scale mail. But this has been in the back of my mind for forever
it would be lighter weight than metal, that's for sure- but i think most kinds of shell wouldn't be durable enough to make a whole garment out of- they'd prolly chip too easily. might be better to stick with metal, but find some sort of coating for the metal to make it look pearly
Pearlescent painted lightweight plastic sounds ideal to me. Something flexible enough to get the shapes you want with mild durability. Lighter than metal.
@@xxselenaxx2142 think your idea is closest, and if you get the right kind you can even shape it into a shell shape, like perhaps a warbla(sp?), possibly those flexible plastic cutting mats you see at like Walmart...but my thought is if your going to use a plastic your going to need some kind of underdress for separation of plastic and body otherwise sweat is going to be running down the dress/shirt/skirt. This could be as a lining, or a separate shift, cami shirt/dress...

multi-purpose dress for when you want to feel gorgeous, cold and expensive while exercising your shoulders at the same time. edit. feel very protected too
as a size 16, i could NEVER! if this took you 50+ hours i can’t even imagine how long it would take me 😭 it ended up so gorgeous, it’s really wearable art
@@LotjeG I just wanted to point out that the difference needed to increase this dress from a 6 to a 16 would take an additional 25 cms of additional pennies. Hardly anything that would break anyone's back.
@@Lizzie__Lizzz It's roughly 1/5 extra in width, not even taking into consideration the length of the dress and the cup size which probably needs to be increased as well. As seen in the video, the weight is already a lot for those straps, I don't think adding even a relatively small amount of weight would increase the comfort level. Maybe with a redesign it could work? I've seen people in the comments suggesting a belt so the bulk of the weight rests on the hip instead of the shoulder.
You are an incredible artist. This is a MASTERPIECE I could see a celebrity in this dress on the red carpet, it’s such a unique idea with a beautiful outcome. I’m stunned and impressed!

Kudos. Your creativity had me(a 57 year old dude) watching an over ten minute video, of a teenager making a dress, with great interest and anticipation.

why…isn’t…this…in…a…museum??! ITS TOO AWESOME But, this is pure *dedication* I can’t describe it, but this was so hard. And this dress of pennies is much more than whatever amount of pennies you used.

Same here - though I have watched videos on coins and Lincoln. But really cool dress - especially how it looks in sunlight. Wonderful! You can make it a few grams lighter by removing any pre-1983 pennies :-)
That is really awesome. As a belly dancer who's applied coins to costumes, I have some idea how tedious it is, but I've never done anything remotely close to his. Great job on the drilling jig, too.
This dress was absolutely stunning! The way it just shimmers in the sunlight… you’ve got a lot of talent, not gonna lie. And to top it all off, you make the dress look even prettier with that gorgeous face! Definitely gonna subscribe after this.
The fact you went and added fringe and accessories when you could've called it good enough shows you're dedication to crafting the best thing possible! I love that it's called "scalemail" as well because that makes one think of dragons, and what do dragons love to horde but riches like coins! And, speaking of riches, the final product is golden... well, copper, but you know what I mean! Liked and subscribed.
Fun fact: Coins actually don’t smell because they’re dirty. That metallic “coin” smell you identify actually happens as a result of the metal reacting with the chemicals in the sweat glands of your skin. This means, at the end when go said you smelled like pennies and needed to shower, you actually weren’t dirty at all (remember, you cleaned them all before using them) you were actually just smelling your own body on a chemical level.
WOW! That is absolutely stunning. I'm an Australian and I'm involved in amateur theatre, so I love making costumes. At first I was thinking that if I made this, I would polish the coins to make them all shiny. But then looking at it finished, I realised all the different shades make it work so much better. It also reminded me of another Australian. Lizzie Gardiner was one of the costume designers on the movie, Priscilla, Queen Of The Dessert. The team won an Oscar in 1995 and she famously wore a dress made of Gold American Express cards. Absolutely amazing. You are very talented, congratulations!!
I really liked the conciseness of the video it made it super fun where I find longer crafting videos more tedious. Don't get me wrong I still watch them but with my adhd I watch them in parts like I watch a segment one day then a segment another or maybe just part of a TV show as a break. I really love unique crafts like this so I was really glad to see a more adhd friendly crafting vid It is actually why I just subscribed after one video (I just found the channel)
That dress is so stunning, and you look fantastic modeling it. I think it might be interesting to see one done with wider straps to give a bit more support, and "sewn" with brass wire loops instead of thread. An inner lining could help make it more comfortable to wear, but a dress like this isn't about comfort anyway, it's about getting people's attention. This was the first thing I have seen of yours, Crescent, but it was fantastic! You obviously have a great eye for design and a gift for manifesting those designs into reality. I hope this dress makes you internet famous!
Greetings young miss. First time seeing your channel today. I've made some maille (mostly adult sized but some for children as well) in my youth and know that it takes a lot of time and dedication, not to mention patience. It is not actually illegal to deface currency, it is only illegal if it is defaced with the intent to defraud someone into thinking it is a different (higher) denomination.
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 Coins are money. Therefore, coins are currency. Currency is defined as something that is used as a medium of exchange. I put $0.75 in a vending machine, it gives me a bag of chips. Are you arguing that those quarters were not used as a medium of exchange?
They have those souvenir penny-squashing machines in zoos, museums, and national parks across the country. If there were any chance of someone getting prosecuted for defacing currency, I think she's pretty far down the list. ...also I think the idea behind that law was the gold/silver standard, where clipping the edges off a dollar coin meant it no longer contained a dollar's worth of precious metal. Not super relevant in a time of fiat currency.
Oh my goodness.. that might worth 500x more in hollywood the design and the color is insanely pretty, maybe should replace the penny with something that looks similar but practical.. love this!

Fun fact the dress actually wouldn't have a smell, the smell comes from body oil in a reaction with the metal as a catalyst
@@ConstantChaos1 ya that's why it would need a liner.
@@aVonHolmium6520 yeah it makes sense to have a liner to act as a barrier although then there would need to be some method of cleaning the liner, I doubt it's machine washable lmfao
@@ConstantChaos1 this is good to know, I refuse to touch change because the smell grosses me out lol 😂
@@countrysidecoffins2925 if you absolutely had to for whatever reason thorough hand-washing prior to contact as well as an alcohol based hand sanitiser (or just rubbing alcohol) will strip away the oils (by washing) and temporarily halt oil production (the alcohol) for about 10 min
I can't imagine a situation where you were forced to use change but if somehow one arises doing this should prevent the smell from forming. A few atoms of the metal will end up left on your hands though so unless washed afterwards a faint amount of the smell might form once your body oil is allowed to return, but that would likely be unnoticeable
This is the most beautiful dress I've ever seen! Congratulations for your hard work, talent, imagination and patience!!!
This makes me think of the old saying: "she didn't know it was impossible so she did it"
Amazing achievement. Congrats
THAT'S A WHOLE $20 DRESS RIGHT THERE !! LOL I love it , it's super freakin creative and honestly looks AMAZING 😂
But probably $580 + in labor
@@joelkinds that’s really specific 😂
@@Neyobe Literally just thought that a total of $600 sounded like a good believable number.
@@joelkinds yeah it does! but I was thinking why 580
@@Neyobe Emi's estimated $20 in material + $580 in labor = $600
I've had this fantasy dress idea for awhile: Scale mail mermaid dress made out of mother of pearl scales. Imagine it being like mermaid armor.
I've never worked on dresses or scale mail. But this has been in the back of my mind for forever
it would be lighter weight than metal, that's for sure- but i think most kinds of shell wouldn't be durable enough to make a whole garment out of- they'd prolly chip too easily. might be better to stick with metal, but find some sort of coating for the metal to make it look pearly
Yeah. You could probably make something more durable, but with a similar look if you used metal + enamel.
You are amazing! Wow! This dress can easily be sold for $7,000 It's an original design and the work you put into it is simply sensational! Well well done!
multi-purpose dress for when you want to feel gorgeous, cold and expensive while exercising your shoulders at the same time.
edit. feel very protected too
The sound of the fringe jangling together was free serotonin. It’s so good and the dress is beautiful!!!
Can we talk about how the penny scale male bralette is the epitome of fashion ❤!
Scale mail?
@@RS54321 thank you for noticing, I love it when random humans point out my spell check flaws 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 thunk yew
as a size 16, i could NEVER! if this took you 50+ hours i can’t even imagine how long it would take me 😭 it ended up so gorgeous, it’s really wearable art
You might be right but how hot would a Size 16 look in this dress!!! 😍
Also, the weight of the dress would increase. I don't think it would end up wearable because of that.
@@LotjeG I only work in metric
You are an incredible artist. This is a MASTERPIECE
I could see a celebrity in this dress on the red carpet, it’s such a unique idea with a beautiful outcome. I’m stunned and impressed!
I could totally see this as a party dress I would wear, it looks great and only 26$!
And like month of work. The resell value is probably more than 200 dollars bc its handmade and took a month to make.
@@amyangel5196 considering it took a whole month, more like 2000 to 5000 at least :P
@@LivTavares considering this would be haute couture try like 15,000+
Either way: far more than $26
In many years later, it will value USD 260,000 if the coins are intact
I hope an art gallery of couture snaps up your work. It is stunning and you are so creative in the presentation.
This feels like the dress a dragon would wear ✨ not only is it scale mail, it is it’s own little hoard 😂💞
I immediately pictured the dragon from shrek 😂😂
Reminds me of a mermaid
If I know right, dragons prefer gold.
@@juhajuntunen7866 and jewels 😂😂😂 I’m kind of like a dragon but with books. I hoard books like a dragon does gold and jewels 😂😂😂
dragons need dresses 2
🏃
This is the most incredible thing I have ever seen made. Ever. Not functional.
Not practical.
MOST ART ISNT.
This is art.
And it's incredibly beautiful
Ooooh yeah, I bet sitting down in that dress would give a new meaning to “pinching pennies “ ! A soft skin-colored knit liner would be necessary to actually wear it! Very cool design!
It reminds me of a mermaid's tail, great work!
This takes me back to when I made a chain mail dress out of soda tabs lol....weighed a LOT and I couldn't sit down in it but worth it! Fantastic job on the penny dress!!! 😃
Kudos. Your creativity had me(a 57 year old dude) watching an over ten minute video, of a teenager making a dress, with great interest and anticipation.
The amount of pure effort and time for an ad… the dedication, the love, the pure jaw drop factor… you deserve everything in the world
exactly this!!!!!
Ok, this needs to be in a museum.
Even though you didn't set out to organize the layout of newer, shinier pennies and older, darker ones but they seemed to organize themselves into a nice pattern. Well done!
“Both sides are a little different, but they’re sisters, not twins” I love that so much 😂
Shay, this dress is simply stunning, something for the red carpet at the Oscars. Beauty like this is not easy. Great Job.
in a fashion museum, is where that dress should be. wow!!!!
My GF: "Honey, when are we going to go shopping for my wedding dress?"
ME: "I am going to need 2,652 pennies."
why…isn’t…this…in…a…museum??! ITS TOO AWESOME
But, this is pure *dedication* I can’t describe it, but this was so hard. And this dress of pennies is much more than whatever amount of pennies you used.
the skintight metal scales just feel like such a mermaid look, A MONEY MERMAID! :D this was such a cool project and brought me so much genuine joy after a rough start to my week and semester, thank you for doing this wild cool thing!
That dress is beautiful and priceless to me! You did an awesome job!!
This dress deserve a professional photoshoot , it's amazingly beautiful 😍
Nothing says we're in a time of extreme inflation quite like making dresses out of pennies.
Awesome job on the dress! Looks fabulous.
That is so cool! This seems like something a celebrity would wear to a red carpet to be quirky. Lady Gaga would 100% wear something like this
This would be such a good red carpet look for a Hollywood star. It looks awesome. ❤😊
I love how absolutely random, unnecessary, but absolutely amusing and cool this whole concept is lmfao I can just see her scratching her head and deciding to make it a project just to do it. I love people like this
That dress is so dope. The jingles that the dress make are probably like my favorite. Thanks for the laugh you're a great dressmaker.
This has to end up in a museum or something someday! Very creative and so pretty!
My aunt was a gogo dancer many years ago and made herself an outfit made with dimes and it was awesome!!!
use flattened pennies next time; they'll be perfect for scaling, and produce a lighter garment. a little cape/drape, maybe, to go with the dress?
Wonderful idea!
Just a few weeks of work. Lol
Next time lol
Does flattening something make it lighter?
@@DivineLightPaladin if you use less pennies, then, yes, it would weigh less.
That's definitely a work of art & deserves to be displayed somewhere fancy for everyone to see. Hopefully someone will pay you alot for your time & effort of creating this masterpiece.
This is genuinely a beautiful work of art that should be worn by celebrities and worth millions of dollars
It’s so editorial. I can see so many A list celebrities wearing something like that. I’m picturing a vogue shoot. It’s phenomenal 🪙
Not sure why RUclips thought I wanted to see this, and I’m even more baffled by the fact that they were right 😂 I’m a guy and I’m not into fashion, but this was really cool! Now I want to see a video of you wearing it out in public and seeing people’s reactions.
The finished product looks like sun dragon skin and I'm living for it!! The dress is so beautiful!
The best dress you've ever made. IT'S FABULOUS....love it.
This dress was absolutely stunning! The way it just shimmers in the sunlight… you’ve got a lot of talent, not gonna lie. And to top it all off, you make the dress look even prettier with that gorgeous face! Definitely gonna subscribe after this.
This literally should have been at 2021 Met Gala. The couture, the history. Simply amazing
She NEEDS to go viral. This is AMAZING
That is so weird and interesting!
I remember that dress!😊
How did she fit like 3 weeks into a 11 minute video whilst other people would have a 30 min video its insane, And she is incredibly talented
I really liked the conciseness of the video it made it super fun where I find longer crafting videos more tedious. Don't get me wrong I still watch them but with my adhd I watch them in parts like I watch a segment one day then a segment another or maybe just part of a TV show as a break. I really love unique crafts like this so I was really glad to see a more adhd friendly crafting vid
It is actually why I just subscribed after one video (I just found the channel)
This dress has to be HEAVY!!!!
I have no words! This is seriously a haute couture gown, it IS high fashion, you should be so proud ❤️
I worked mostly steel, aluminum sometimes and one in grade 5 titanium in the four in one style. What you've done here is so creative and fun, I am impressed, well done!
Sounds like you're still creating maille lol
wonderful work 100% try putting fabric under it at certain places secured with fishing thread.
2:07 IDK why, but all of the dust fairies (that's what I call them) in your house are so aesthetic.
Me, yesterday: not really interested in sewing or fashion
RUclips: would you like to see a dress made of pennies?
Me, now: I wish you made more videos!
Yes
Actually same here, I literally just discovered the dressmaking side of YT yesterday, and now I’m addicted lol
I don’t even wear dresses, why am I obsessed?
This could become a really classy cocktail dress if the back covers a little more hahaha I love it!!!
Wearable sculpture. Beautiful job. Only TSA would hate it.
I’m in awe right now. You and this project are bad-ass! The dress turned out beautifully. Love it when the algorithm sends me something cool and totally random.
You really put so much effort on that dress. Almost 2,000 pennies, WOW!! By the way, I'm a fan from the Philippines.
2,652 pennies!
Aside from it being illegal to deface currency, this is an absolute beautiful dress! You are incredibly creative and talented!
It is not actually illegal to deface currency, it is only illegal if it is defaced with the intent to defraud someone into thinking it is a different (higher) denomination.
Coins are not currency, so...
our government doesn't mind printing more shes fine.
Oh my goodness.. that might worth 500x more in hollywood
the design and the color is insanely pretty, maybe should replace the penny with something that looks similar but practical..
love this!
Gorgeous dress! It gives of a vibe of "woman of Middle-Earth who wants to travel and stay protected but also look styled at the same time, and all the dwarfs and Elves hoged all the Mithrill/true silver so lets make something out of copper instead". If that makes sense.
