The 7mm-08 (and its older twin the 7x57) is the ideal deer round. It's easy to shoot well and has more than enough power for any Bambi. I'd sight it in dead on at 200 yards. It would be 2 inches high at 100 yards, 8 inches low at 300 yards and 24 inches low at 400 yards. It's an easy formula to remember and I don't have to waste time fiddling around with my scope.
Nope, he sights in all his bing-bangs dead-on @ 100 yards. Refuses to take advantage of the flat-shooting properties of modern, high-intensity bottlenecked rounds. Treats everything as if it's a .30-30.
The MV on the box is probably measured with a 24" barrel. Your MV is likely a bit lower with a 22" barrel, thus accounting for the additional drop that you had.
Hey Adam! I run 140s in my 7mm08 at around 3,000 fps, Ruger American. Shoots them very well. I sightin out here where I live, 3 inches high at 100. I do that with everything running at 2600 or better. Just works out well for the kind of hunting and shooting I get into out here. Honestly, I got rid of my 25-06 after I found out what a great cartridge the 7mm08 is and what it will do! Haven't missed it.
Definitely, not disappointed 😉. ** For just one caliber see if you can do 50, 75, 100, 125, 150 and 200. There might be a 1.5 inch rise at 75 ... Not that , that would matter 🤔.
I just cant get over the fact that the 7mm-08 has metric system and inches in the same name. No matter how good it is, I still think some dude sat back and thought it a good idea to mix the two systems in a name. Either cal it a .280 - 08 or 7mmx51 or even better 7mm Remington. 280 remington is the one based on the 30-06 cartridge
I have hunted with a lot of different cartridges but for Deer the two best cartridges are the 243 and 7mm-08 are excellent out to 400 yards maybe even 500!!
7/08 Is an awesome rifle / round combination. My son has killed quite a few Deer and a Big Ole Red Stag Hind in Texas. She only took a few steps and collapsed. He was using 139gr. Superformance ammo. I was surprised at the performance no heart ❤️ was left just small pieces and destroyed the lungs 🫁 I exited the other side. It was about a 100 yard shot.
So, early on I hunted with 2 brothers from the generation prior who influenced me a lot. One built and shot a custom 250-3000 Sav. The other, a 7mm Mauser. Both pretty darn cool deer calibers I felt. But I’m partial to bigger bullets, and a gun dealer I knew built a 7-08 on a cheap looking, Japan made model 70. And with a Douglas barrel, it was a shooter indeed. Of course, way back then, 70’s I reckon, there was no factory ammo for a 7-08. That gun was a great deer rifle and I’ve built 2 since then and it’s all I’ve used for many years now. I’ve always shot federal 140’s, since I stopped reloading, because they shoot and kill so darn well. I don’t know how many deer I’ve killed with my 7-08’s, but lots. This year I’m shooting 120 grain nosler bt’s because I couldn’t find the federal 140’s, and the 120 grain Nosler’s shot just as well. I always thought what a 243 was lacking was just a little more bullet weight. The box says they’ll do 3000 fps and everybody knows ‘speed kills,’ so we’ll see, stay tuned and happy day to one and all 😊.
Very interesting video, ballistics studies are fun. Have you tried a +2.5 @ 100 yard zero? This gives the 140gr 7mm-08 (and most any centerfire round with a similar ballistic coefficient and velocity) a point-blank zero out to about 320 yards. What this means is that the bullet is within +/-3” line of sight out to about 320 yards. Same principle as a battlesight zero on an M-16, M-14, etc. A .30-30 or similar cartridge would be well suited to a 100 yard zero.
I have this exact rifle in 7mm08. Mine is topped with a Sig Sauer whiskey 3, 4×12 40mm objective. The 7mm08 is truly an underrated calibre. Low recoil, lots of power, light easy to handle guns.
Sir, I took a .375 H&H custom Remington 700 to Africa, before leaving I sighted the gun in using Federal 260 grain Nosler Partion rounds. I sighted it in at 50 yards. One half inch moa at 50 yards. It shoot 2 inches high at 100 yds and was dead on at 200 yards. Now this was a $3500.00 rifle and that was what I expected from it. Maybe something to try with one of your zeroing. Now I think with the lighter bullets you may not get the same results.
I watched your video on 7-08 when I was doing research into different rounds, I ended up buying a savage axis in 7-08. Sighted it in to 100, when I bought it, it was shooting literally feet out. Sighted it a couple days ago and shot a buck yesterday one shot at 418 yards, first time I hunted with the rifle or caliber and I admit it performed amazing. Buck didn’t take one step 👌🏽 I recommend this caliber for deer!
Had my 7mm08 since the 70s all I ever use is Rem 140 corelokts sight in 2inches high at 100 at 200 your still in the vitals havent had a loss yet n freezer is full.. For coyotes 100grain same brand same dialing.
Great video and a great caliber! In my early hunting years I thought it wasn’t dead unless it wasn’t shot with a 300 win lol. I’ve never had a deer live to complain about the 7mm-08😉
my brother and I both scored on opening weekend.... 2 beautiful white tailed deer...a lot of luck, and some skill proved to be successful for us. the freezer is almost full. WHO_TEE_WHOOOOOO
With mine using the 139 grn whitetail hunters an inch and a half high at 100 yards puts me at zero at 200 and an inch in a half low at 300 . Not sure what the hold would be at 50 . Most of my critters are between 100 and 200 yards
The drop at 200 yards is darned close to .308 (6”). I like 7mm-08. Already have .308. It does fine and easy to find anywhere. If a store has any ammo, chances are .308 will be there. I got one in 6.5 CM because of its accuracy and minimal recoil and sourcing it has been more problematic. The performance of 6.5 is similar enough to 7mm-08 although maybe a little less stout, but certainly effective on whitetails. Anyway, I find myself practicing a lot with .308. Most of my rifle shooting is with this cartridge. I can ring an 8” plate at 300 yards all day long with .308. That’s further than I’ve had to shoot any whitetail or pig I’ve had to shoot. I have no reason to upgrade to something flatter shooting or more powerful as of yet. If I ever spend time in brown bear country, I prob will. I don’t hunt moose, but did have to run from one once... I had a .45 on me, but I ran anyway.
There are a lot of calibers that are adequate for taking deer and the 7mm-08 is certainly one of them. It really comes down to preference. Thanks wtw these are great videos with good information. 👍👍🦌🦌
7mm08 has less felt recoil than .243 to my wife. She prefers her 7mm08 Savage with 139 grain Hornady Interlock bullets over a near max load of H4350. That is where her Savage gets the best accuracy with acceptable recoil for her. I have found that WLR primers work best in her rifle. CCI comes very close. Everything else opens the groups up. Not sure why, but I just go with what works. She has never shot anything over 200 yards. Her scope is set at 1 inch high at 100 yards. She aims for the heart on everything, and it hits where she wants. She has a .30-06 that is a true 1/2 inch at 100 yards rifle with Remington Core-Lokt. It kicks too much for her liking. Her 7mm08 is a 3/4 inch on its good days rifle. 1 inch on bad days. 3/4 to 1 inch groups work perfect for her. No wild pig is safe when she decides she wants more sausage.
Sight in at 200yds. Dead on at 40yds or so. 1.75" high at 100. 9 inches low at 300. Just shoot for center lung until 250, then hold high hair out to 3. Dead deer every time that you do your part. Simple, no dope card, just venison in the freezer.
I wonder how you know the velocity of the bullet at muzzle. If the muzzle velocity is actually 2750 the bullet shouldn't drop that much. That drop is more in line with a muzzle velocity of 2500 fps.
Ever heard of max PBR lol you need to find a better zero for your particular rifle, scope height over bore, ammunition that way you can shoot from 0-300yds without ever going 3inches over or 3inches lower than your point of aim. Your zero is bad.
I am a very big fan of the 7x57 and the 7mm-08 is very close to it. I load for two different rifles in that caliber though one is stamped 275 Rigby. I have some knowledge of .284 ballistics and I believe the 7mm-08 you have can do much better than this test showed even though it wasn't bad.
I've killed 6 deer with mine in the last two years with 139 gr sst hand loads and love it .but I'm like you I've got a bunch of different calibers I have and really like .
Norma use code: whoteewho for 11% entire site

Exactly what I do for caribou here in alaska. It's a very popular round for caribou and black tails up here
Nope, he sights in all his bing-bangs dead-on @ 100 yards. Refuses to take advantage of the flat-shooting properties of modern, high-intensity bottlenecked rounds. Treats everything as if it's a .30-30.
I would definitely dial this in for maximum point blank range.
I need some 7mm-08 and Norma had what you were shooting in stock. The code worked. Thanks very much!

@@bustersmith5569 Actually it was developed in 1958 known as the 7mm/308 a wildcat cartridge. They just dropped the 3. Since its a 308 necked to 7mm.

That has to be an awesome rifle 👍
We got to try a 50 yard sight in, and see how it goes at 100 yards
I have a zero of 250 yards on 7mm-08 to take advantage of its flat bullet travel. It has consistently puts 5 shoots in an inch group at that range.
@Kenny Betsill I load my own ammo. 140 grain at a velocity of 2885 fps.

Absolutely
I'd like to see the 7mm-08 vs 308 water jug test. Couldn't find it in the play list when I searched it. I'm gonna buy a 7mm-08 here soon.

Seams like a real sweet deer cartridge! That deer didn't stand a chance!🇺🇲✝️🇺🇲
I’ve not shot this round but am interested. I appreciate all these drop videos.
I'm zeroed at 100 as well, if there's a deer at 50 you don't need to holdover just aim where you normally do and the deer falls over dead
