    As an old cowboy in Montana told me back in the 1970's "son, there aint an animal on gods green earth that can't be killed with a hammer - IF your good enough." That said I love 6.5 (.264") 7mm (.284") and .308 (7.82 mm) bullets in many cartridges and have taken many deer with all over the years. 260 Remington, 7mm/08 and 308 being favorites. And all utilizing the same case, just necked to different bullet diameters. Great video!

    If memory serves, the 7mm08 was designed for sales in countries where there was a prohibition against the use of military calibers. Jeff Cooper suggest it for use in his "Scout Rifle" if you were in such a country The two are identical in practical use. Both good choices.

    I like both equally but I stuck with my .308 just because of the availability of ammo and the ability to utilize heavier projectiles for elk moose bear hunting . The 7mm-08 will take those critters as well but the .308 has more frontal area , larger wound channel and better stopping power say on a charging animal .

    I didn't know anything about the 7mm-08 Remington until 2000!
    I started hunting with a 20 gauge single shot.. in 1982.. graduated to the 303 British in 1986.. and bought my first rifle in 1991 a 30-06 Springfield!
    After using the the 30-06 for nine years.. I wanted something light weight less recoil accurate too! I researched different calibers and firearms and decided to purchase a Remington 700 chambered in 7mm-08.
    Boy what a difference in recoil and accuracy! I now could shoot half moa consistently with several brands of factory ammo. Without the pounding on my shoulder!
    However.. heres the thing.. the deer that I harvested with these three center fire cartridges didn't know the difference! But my confidence was boosted by being able to shoot the 7mm-08 consistently better 😊
    More range time too!
    Since then.. I've tried other calibers.. the 350 Remington Magnum the 350 Legend the 358 Winchester and got the same results! But the 7mm-08 remains to be my favorite cartridge for whitetail deer!
    Thanks for sharing this brother

    Can't speak to the difference from raw diameter, but for those curious about handloading, 7mm-08 has weights as low as about 115 and up to 170 I believe, so you get a lot of variety with the same powder capacity and more efficient outer dimensions which is pretty cool

    Fabulous conjecture, and I have shot all the above, .300 Winchester Magnum still doing it for me. My Uncle loves the 7mm Remmington Magnum, he even said he coudl pierce the track of a railroad iron. Well that being the best of all worlds for me, my dad was stuck on his Colt .270 and took a lighter rifle trekking more times than I ever will most likely. After shooting my friends 7 mm I have decided to look into a better recoil setup, and that is now my grail what hits hard and don't knock my shoulder out of socket.

  • @AttackorAdapt

    I handload for both. Both are awesome cartridges to shoot, but for me it comes down to availability of components.
    308 brass, and I guess factory ammo is way easier to come by and typically cheaper. .284 bullets on the other hand, are cheaper locally, but brass is nigh impossible to find, even online in Canada. Factory ammo is running well above $45 a box for decent hunting ammo in 7mm-08. PPU 140gr PSP is under $35 but not consistent in groups or velocity data and that's the cheapest on the shelf.
    Basically it's an " are you an ass or tiddies?" Kind of question. It just depends on how I'm feeling that day.

    Great video! I also love both rounds, but I do have one warning for 7mm-08 shooters. If the only thing you can find is Hornady 139, superformance bullets make sure you can ensure proper placement, we've lost two deer and killed two. That gun shoots a .7 moa with that round and a .4 with Nosler 140 BT. Those are hard to find. With my Christensen Arms DMR Fiochii 180 Hyperformance, I shot an elk at 160 yards she was in the move, and the bullet went high left, yes she spooked before the shot and I bricked. The follow-up shot hit her esophagus, but the energy in both stopped her from running and put her down. Nothing has moved from that DMR. 150 core lokt in a deers blood factory put it down now.

    Well that’s an easy question to answer, do you want deer hunting. Or general combat? 7mm 08 is a great. “Weak” round for hunting, light. Small. But still 30 cal, basically in short range performance, Luger recoil. That’s what yin give the small.weak. Fun Nato. Is the real round for combat, and the hale. Medium machine guns, DMR’s, snipers. Along with actual. Effect in target, you get bigger, heavier rounds, more payload, knots terminal effect.

  • @denisleblanc4506

    If you compare 2 calibers, you should consider performance. Of course the 7mm-08 can't compare to the 308 in availability since the 308 is a military caliber and we all know what that means. While there isn't a very wide variety of loads available in 7mm-08, it is wide enough for almost every hunters needs. If you want best trajectory with less drop and and drift, you have to balance velocity and B.C. A 140 grain 7mm has pretty much the same trajectory as a 165 grain 308. They have similar BC's and velocities. So they are both very close in everything but recoil. As much as we like to say we're not bothered by it, everyone is bothered to some degree. The lower recoiling rifle will allow you to practice more and become a better shooter faster. What your comparison shows is that the typical 308 deer load of 150 grains is soundly beat by the 140 grain 7mm-08. You have to shoot the 165 308's to match the trajectory and that will increase the recoil even more. When you consider energy, you have to remember that all varieties of game are killed using arrows and handgun calibers that have very little energy. The usual bandied about number of 1000 ft-lbs for deer is irrelevant with today's modern bullets. If your bullet doesn't perform at long ranges, the amount of energy means nothing. Shoot a deer with a FMJ bullet and it doesn't matter if it has 1000 ft-lbs or 2000 ft-lbs it won't kill well. You have to chose a bullet that will perform at your maximum range limits. These two calibers are very close in performance except for recoil and that make the 7mm-08 the winner. Specially if you want a light hunting rifle. That's where you'll really notice the difference in recoil. If rifle weight isn't important to you, well the reduced recoil of the 7mm-08 will make it easier to see the trace and impacts. I've hunted with the 7mm-08 since the early 90's and everything I've killed only needed one shot and that includes 2 moose. The 308 would have done the same thing but its just easier with the 7mm-08.

    I like the 7mm-08 vs the .308 in a very light, short action rifle with a 22" barrel. If you want to step up to a 30, you're better served stepping up to a 30-06 with a 24" barrel to take advantage of heavier bullets with higher BCs and sectional density. Nothing "wrong" with the .308 though, especially if you hunt in areas where ranges are under 300 yards. Points about the .308's availability are valid.

  • @stephencooper5040
    @stephencooper5040 Год назад

    If I’m recalling correctly, assuming you have two bullets of the same weight yes, the smaller diameter will have a higher ballistic coefficient AND more sectional density. HOWEVER, the larger diameter, assuming the same weight and same length barrel, will usually leave the muzzle with more velocity and it will take quite a distance downrange to realize the advantages of the higher BC.

  • @ronws2007
    @ronws2007 Год назад +2

    Essentially, a 7-08 has a softer recoil impulse and for a deer rifle, it can definitely do the trick. You would have to go to 7 PRC to push heavier bullets faster, which will increase the recoil impulse. This video is one of the best comparisons with easy-to-read graphs. Out to 400 yards, it really does not matter what you shoot to get a deer. It's the longer ranges where PRC rounds or even the 7-08 do better. But if not hunting past 400 or 500 yards, then the farther reach is primarily for targets and competition.
    But, yet, there are a number of wildcat rounds for people who like to tinker or find a specific solution for a problem. For example, I have no use for .224 Valkerie. Yet, there it is, a thing, and plenty of good people use it for valid reasons.
    I have a number of .308s, which has been my favorite round for a while. And easy to get. And plenty of inexpensive rifles in that caliber. One of my .308s with a medium bull barrel likes 180 gr. Another sporter barrel likes 165 grain. Even the cheapest rifles are averaging 1 MOA and getting sub Moa on the first two shots, which is very necessary for hunting. I am not taking more than 3 shots at an animal, if I even get that many.
    Now, for long range? That is going to be my 7 PRC, which is a wild cat hot rod that pushes heavy bullets.
    I have always used 1,000 ft-lbs as the minimum energy for a deer. No one really measured it. Some guy had calculated energy on a successful hunt and it grew from there. And if the energy at impact is 999 ft-lbs, the deer is not going to say, "That was just a tickle. Buh-bye!" and jauntily saunter off.
    If you have a 7mm -08, keep shooting it for deer.
