    I am 65 years old and have used the 7mm08 for 35 years. It still only takes 2 shots to sight in. I brace the rifle on center and fire. Then, still braced, I move the scope to the bullet hole. My next shot, aimed at the center, is dead nuts.

      You're showing our age. Nightforce, Vortex and many others are true tracking. I do have some "older" scopes that have gotten stuck though. I had a Weaver 36X fixed that wouldn't track and the factory fixed it. Old grease was the culprit according to the factory. I'm not sure what that means.

    I have a number of Savage rifles and decided to get my son an Axis last year. It's been amazingly accurate. I love the 7mm-08 for it's versatility, relatively low recoil, and overall usefulness for medium and even large, non- dangerous game. The Hornady Superformance has performed equal to my handloads and shoots 3/4" groups @100 yds day in and day out.

    Love the 7mm-08. I have a plain Jane Ruger American as well. I shoot Hornady Full Boar ammo with 139 gr. GMX bullets. It shoots sub MOA in my particular rifle. Between my son and me, we have used it to take 6 deer in the past 3 seasons. Longest shot was about 170. Shortest was about 20. To me, the 7mm-8 is about the perfect deer load. Good trajectory (better than .308), plenty of killing power, and very moderate recoil. I bought it for him to use deer hunting, and I have found myself using it instead of my .30-06 whenever he is not hunting. Keep up the good work! You produce quality content. Merry Christmas from central Kentucky.

    This "little" cartridge is so underrated and so perfect as a medium game hunting cartridge. It literally duplicates the ballistics of the old Mauser 7x57. That is a set of numbers that is so well proven that it's legendary. Buy a deer rifle and go elk hunting as long as you load a reasonable weight and reasonably constructed elk bullet in it. Too many elk going to the freezer with 7mm-08 these days to dismiss this one as just a "deer" hunting cartridges.

    • @fyisense9312
      @fyisense9312 Год назад

      I agree. I think it is one of the best one gun cartridges that a person can own especially if hand loaded correctly. You can safely get 3300 fps from a 100gr HP which means you aim 4" high on a coyote at 400yds with a 100yd site in. You can also load a 150gr safely to 2800fps which will anchor anything at 200yds.

    I have always read where it takes at least 200 rounds to get the best group out of a rifle. I would also check to make sure the barrel is actually free floating. I've notice on cheaper guns that the stock hitting the forend on the barrel. However, Ruger guarantees 1 MOA out of the box. Send it back!
    Also wait 15 minutes between shots when checking for accuracy. Most times you never get more than 2 shots. Also I have a Remington 700 VLS .243 heavy barrel that I've tried about every round in it , and it shoots 100 grain Core-Lokts the best. I actually don't carry it due to its weight, but our foster daughter carries it and has taken a 5 deer with it at ranges from 100 to 220 yards.

    One thing I did notice about the shooting session, the front rest is at the very tip of the fore end. Try sliding the rifle up to and get the front rest up closer to the receiver and see if that helps. Having the rifle resting that close to the end or heaven forbid on the barrel itself can throw off the barrel harmonics. May help or may not, but it would be worth trying. Thanks and I really like the channel!

  • @johnnorman7708
    @johnnorman7708 Год назад +2

    With the . 300 Savage that eventually became . 308 Winchester, we eventually ended up with an entire class of excellent short action deer cartridges. It does not require much power to take deer out to 400 yards as long as the bullet behaves properly upon getting there. The 7mm-08 just might represent the perfect deer cartridge if it could ever be proven that such a cartridge does indeed exist. Having all you need for your circumstances and rarely ever being excessive is what makes for a really useful deer cartridge.

    I love my 7mm-08’s. I have a REM. Model 7 and I just received my Ruger American Go Wild Camo. I am preparing to mount up one of my new Vortex Viper scopes on it. I have been hunting with the Remington for almost 30 years. I have many different guns, in several different calibers, of several Brands, that I use, but the 7mm - 08 has been a mainstay! I prefer shooting Hornady Superformance 139gr. Interlock’s or SST’s! If the Superformance isn’t available ( I’ve kept a back stock of it for many years ) then I go with regular Hornady 139gr. Interlock’s. I have another Ruger headed to me now... a Ruger American Ranch in 6.5 Grendel. I’ll be shooting 123gr. Hornady Custom SST’s. I would consider checking the scope and mounts prior to selling the rifle short, and try some Hornady ammo, Superformance if you can find it, and see if things improve.

    Look down the left side of your forend & make sure the barrel isn't contacting the stock ... My Ruger American 308 & my Ruger American 243 was touching on the left side ... I think those models had a defect in the mold ... Was a simple fix , I just had to remove the barrel , take a Dremel & fine sand down the stock where it was contacting the barrel ... Shoots super accurate now , those touching bullet holes each time if not actually shooting hole for hole ... I'm going to buy the 7mm-08 model too but I suspect I'll have to do the same to it as I had to do to the other ones ... Hope this helps you out brother....

    Something you can try when it doesnt like a certain ammo is play with your action screw torque. A little looser on the rear screw sometimes makes a difference. Also if you're still low round count on the barrel it will continue to speed up until the round count is higher and the speed stabilizes. May be worth it to do a DIY bedding job on the recoil lug and action. Saw a huge improvement on one of my rifles after doing that

      @@bigsean2473 True, of course. But we responsible hunters don't take that one, cold bore shot, until we find the right ammo... and to find the right ammo, often requires 10 cold bore shots, which produce a properly informative group. Cheers man, I think we're speaking the same language.

    I had the same problem with my Remington model 7 7mm-08 back in 2000. I went through 7 boxes of core-loks which I got at wally mart back in the day for 5.00 a box (miss printed on the price my reward). I then had to have the trigger worked on since I could not adjust it. The gunsmith glass bedded the stock plus worked on the feeding ramp. Afterwards, I another box which did sub 1" groups at 100. Now, the thing is a deer slaying machine. It has taken blacktails, whitetails and muleys. You have to be smooth when you chamber a round. Out of the box it would shoot the same way with 2" groups. The 7mm-08 is a great cartridge. The model 7 rifle is short and fast to use which is nice when you go through the brush. One guy commented to me once ahh that's such a cute rifle then he saw what it did to a deer. No more stupid comments. I would take a 7mm-08 over a creedmor any day of the week when it comes to deer hunting.
    Now, I just use barnes lead free since in my state went lead free (barnes 120 gr. tipped tsx bt). Part of it sucks because I have not yet to find a bullet afterwards. I think the lead free stuff blows right through and do not mushroom right. Not sure...
    I only used federal premiums nosler partitions up prior to hunting regulation changes. Dont use coreloks for deer! I have seen too much damage meat afterwards.
    Now, I am TIKKA man. ! just picked up a superlite t3x for my son in a 300wsm from sportsman (christmas present).

    OK here is my continuing saga of my Remington model 7 CDL in 7mm-08. I had to send it back to Remington again in August. I could throw a rock left handed, glasses off and facing the sun more accurately than my rifle. I went through 6 different ammo manufacturers, all 140 or 150 grain, two scopes and two different sets of mounts, not even close unless a seven inch diameter is the new MOA. Remington sends a link to follow the repair process, told me the rifle needed a new barrel and waiting parts. October I get a letter telling me they are sending it back not repaired and told me that I need to find a reputable gunsmith, how about that after spending $800. So now the rifle is getting a new barrel and I’m having it bedded and will let you know how I make out. The rifle club I belong to keeps access to the 100 to 300 yard marks plowed of snow.

    Been there done that brought the tee shirt... (actually a lot of ammo) I had a 7mm08 Tikka T3x, (now have a 7mm Rem mag for longer range hunting) excellent set up. Started with core lokt, inconsistent ammo, some motored out and some barely made it out of the barrel. Winchester supe X grouped 1/2 inch at 100 but spread rapidly at 200. Ended up shooting Hornady Superformance and it was consistent and very accurate. I sold the gun to a young guy and he uses Winchester Black Box which is tack driving for him. Sako ammo is also extremely consistent. Different barrels suit different ammo but spending a bit more on more primium factory ammo definitely pays dividends in my experience especially in the field.

    In my opinion the 7mm-08 is everything the 7x57mm Mauser should be. I am looking at buying one of these as a woods rifle. From what I've seen with Ruger American rifles across the board is they need a little bit of a break in. After you fire a few rounds through them, they do deliver as far as accuracy is concerned. A friend of mine has one and bought a Boyd's stock and Timeny trigger for it. He also smoothed out the bolt. It's a shooter too. It will shoot as well as any higher end rifle out there. I'll probably go that route myself.

    Doesn't help you now as it is two years later but I have a TC Venture in 7mm-08 and I get 5/8" groups with the Hornady 139gr Superformance ammo. Over 1" with Federal ammo. On a side note, my first 7mm-08 (I love this cartridge) was a Savage 110 and it wouldn't shoot Federal and it really sucked trying to shoot anything over 140gr. I found out that the Savage had a 1 in 11 twist and that was no good. My TC loves to shoot and I have taken many animals with it out here in Idaho. It wasn't long before I started loading for it and have a good load worked up and my go-to is the 139gr Hornady SST bullet, crazy terminal performance.

    I use a 7x57 Mauser 66 with 175gr S&B Sierra game king. The extra bullet weight makes it more versatile and it would be good for fox right up to a 500kg blue bull, although dangerous game apart from leopard should be avoided. The penetration of the heavier longer bullets , higher SD , is excellent.

    After talking to some buddys they recommended shooting heavier bullets. 175g SMK shrunk my groups to .5 moa. I’m sure you know but sometimes the barrel just doesn’t like certain bullets. Anyways. Love the vids. Keep them coming.

    Great little video WTW. I have a suggestion you might try. Not all scopes adjust like they are supposed too, even the high dollar ones. When you make an adjustment, say 8 clicks left. Run it back 8 clicks right to the original setting and back to your needed adjustment of 8 clicks left. Take the brass from a fired round and lightly tap the scope tube on the top and side fore and aft of the turrets and then take your next shot. If you can find some Hornady Superformance 140 grain SST's, try them out. You will be surprised at the accuracy. Thanks for another great shooting video. As always, greetings from Arkansas, Gods country.

Sometimes the rifling needs to be evenly worn a bit. My Winchester model 70 my savage model 10 and my Remington 700 all shot much tighter groups after 40 or 50 rounds. Try it keep us posted.

    Any rifle can be made to shoot well to 100m. The ballistics of the 7mm comes into its own at about 300m with retained speed and trajectory. That's why the 7x57 is probably the greatest hunting cartridge of all time after the 375 H&H. Sticking it into short action case just cripples it.
