this video was very needed for me. Guy sold me his corolla because he thought the head gasket was gone haha. Got it cheap only has 93,000kms on it and its been a beautiful car so far. Nothing wrong except tyres and thermostat. No leaks either
I had to repair almost exactly all the same parts on my 95 Corolla over the last 8 years (struts, CV axles, ball joint, motor mounts, radiator, water pump, thermostat). I've replaced my timing belt every 80k miles only to realize what you said in an earlier video: they tend to last over 150k miles and so do the water pumps. After 80k miles and 10 years of driving, even the cheap Autozone timing belt still looked like new. The power steering belt looks like it would have lasted 150k miles, too, but the alternator and AC belts look like they're done after 80k miles. I never had an issue with the axle seals leaking, or the differential valve getting stuck, but that's because I have an automatic transmission. This car is so reliable, for the first 20 years, it didn't need any repairs, so I didn't start learning how to do car repairs until I was 40 years old. One additional problem I had was that the driver side wheel bearing went bad. I found a car with low miles in the salvage yard and just replaced the whole spindle / knuckle. That lasted for 30k miles and the wheel bearing went bad again. So I went to the salvage yard again and I found a spindle / knuckle that looked like it already had the wheel bearings replaced. So I replaced it a second time.
Great video! I got a 94 DX with 325k on it, my radiator cracked so I’m replacing most of my cooling system, including the thermostat! So thanks again. These cars are amazing and will run as well as you take care of them!
Thank you! I feel that. I also had to replace most of my cooling system when I got the car lol thermostats kept failing, the one I installed in the video lasted like 3 months. I put in an aisin one after that and it has been great so far.
I recently got a 1993 Geo prizm, same 1.8l engine, got it for 800 bucks, so far ive thrown at least around 1500 bucks at it in new parts and tools I didnt had to fix it, I did almost the entire braking system brand new, almost the entire cooling system brand new, separate transcooler, most of the vacuum hoses brand, new cat, new exhaust seals, motor and trans mounts, flexpipe, front exhaust mount, I still need to get new tires for it, but im looking around to see if I can find a nice set of oem wheels from a honda that would fit, before getting new tires, I also need new axles for it, I do get tired of cars fairly quickly, so I will redesign the exterior and interior of the car to be more aero dynamic. And more modern looking
Thanks for all your tips, I do have to check the trans vent, and the heater cable slack, specially after replacing the hoses for the heater core, might have thrown that cable out of wack

Hey mand good to see you still keeping the corolla, I'm willing to get one anything you would think i should keep in mind? Is there anything that breaks regularly or does it just run ok?
Nothing really breaks too regularly on these. Old rubber components like hoses, motor mounts, things of that nature, I’d also change all of the fluids if there isn’t record of fluid changes. If you live anywhere that salts the roads I’d look over the car pretty closely for rust, it usually starts on the back of the rockers towards the rear wheels.
Thank you for the great videos. I have 1997 Toyota Corolla with 130k the problem is When I drive, it shakes whenever I'm going over 60-80 or under 60 whenever I step off from the accelerator. On high speed whenever I step off from the gas pedal feels like my passenger side will is bumping. I feel that the shake is from my passenger side wheel. My all four tire is new and balanced. I installed New front suspension still the shake is there am thinking of changing the CV axle. do you have any solution for me It will be really helpful for me.
I had the EXACT same issue. It had me confused for like two years. I did replace the axles and it did nothing. What solved it for me was to make sure my tires were inflated to the max on the tires, not what the manual for the car says. I keep the at like 45-50 psi and I’m fine, any lower, shakes. It did it with my old and new tires. I’d make sure your wheel bearings and tie rods are in good shape too.
It’s possible you need an alignment. After getting new tires and even more so after replacing any part of the suspension, it is highly recommended to have the car aligned. You do NOT need to run the tires at 40-50PSI. I run mine at 32-35 and it is smooth at 90-100 (only ever did that once…lol)
Hello kyle i bought 97 Corolla (161k miles) same colour last year. From since i bought during car in traffic the engine temperature is going from down to exactly into middle and engine rpm is decreasing and vibrating, so i use to reduce the temperature by turning the heater on, and during this is summer i can also see my coolant turned from green to brown. Can you give me the solution
That’s normal, it will idle down once it warms up, and the needle is supposed to sit right in the middle of the gauge. the vibration is normal, but it might be worth taking a look at your motor mounts. Bad mounts will really amplify this vibration, That is a common issue with these cars, I’ve had to change all of the mounts on mine. As for the coolant, I’d just do a coolant flush, it should be red/pink, not brown.

The coolant in my corolla is red. Not because I used red fluid, but because It hasn't been changed since the 90s.

High idle at 1100-1500 rpm from being stuck in an open loop is the giveaway on these cars and usually the heat isn’t as good.
