Good video. I have a 94 automatic with 160k miles. The plastic parts are crumbling, I had to replace the seatbelt. Recently replaced the distributor. it has a rattling noise in the dash area. I repainted it with cheap enamel paint and it still looks new 2 years later, the sun kills the paint eventually. Some of my most profitable videos have been those describing how I fixed stuff on my Corolla so it cost me $1800 in 2004 and has actually made me money. The AC and radio still work very well. Every time I wash it I open the hood and go over the engine area with a rag to remove and crud. I need to replace the radiator fluid soon and look into getting the timing belt changed. Thanks to covid I only drove it a few hundred miles last year. I may take out the back seat and add a foam pad to turn it into a camperolla. I am going to go check ut your other corolla videos- I subscribed.
replaced the spark plugs and a new wire kit, and my wagon is new, 262403miles, and a new waterpump. Original spark plugs,Replaced after 15 years, later I'm good for another 100,000 miles.
I’m near Saint Paul Minnesota and I see that generation Corolla’s probably several times a month, but seeing that generation wagon is as rare as hens teeth. I should have bought one years ago for pizza delivery because my regular cab Ford Ranger doesn’t have enough room for large pizza deliveries.
I currently drive a 94 camry 4 cylinder automatic drive with a little over 250,000 miles. Im currently getting work done on the timing belt and water pump. It ran like a champ until last week when i notice it wouldnt accelerate. The AC blows cold, its awesome.
I have a 95 base sedan, and when it was broken into once they took my cupholders, so I went onto a Toyota Nation forum and saw that the next gen up had a larger cupholder with a cool door on the storage cubby. Fits pretty well, and the whole assembly was like 60 bucks on ebay.
I bought a 96 for $450 with 280k on the odometer. I probably put less than $800 in it during ownership & drove that car for 40k at 321k & the person i sold it to drove off with it 😊😊😊😊. I love these Toyota's
My first car is the '97 liftback model - bought for $1700AUD but with low kilometers. There are always little issues you don't pick up on when buying like one of the seatbelts not retracting properly and weird idiosyncrasies with the fuses but otherwise they're obviously great cars.
@evan the seatbelts do that because the dirt in the seatbelt webbing from hand grease and oils gets on it, and it doesn’t retract properly. Cleaning them solves this
Got a 1997 manual with 100k on it. Bought it at 86k for $2100 in 2020, 1 owner, 6 years of maintenance records all from the same shop. Owner worked at the shop.
I have a 1996 Corolla 5 speed. I paid $1600 for it 10 yrs ago in almost mint condition and am still driving it. I won't let it go until the wheels fall off. Previously, i had 1992's as well, with automatic 3 speed plus overdrive. They were voted that year's most reliable vehicle and i believe it. I won't drive a car that won't start every time.
The RIGHT oil is IMPORTANT, for the top end ie camshaft etc, at start up you NEED the oil to get around engine QUICKLY VERY VERY QUICKLY UNLESS you want a dead engine!! 🥶🥶 A GOOD quality battery a little larger than spec, good tires, cambelt change, water pump normally at same time wash it sometimes DO NOT THRASH the car LOOK AFTER IT IT WILL LOOK AFTER YOU!!!! 👍👍👍👍
My 96 1.8 5 speed just drove 12 hours from Colorado to Arizona only problem it gave me was that some how i lost the alternator adjustment bolt somewhere along the way and it loosend my serpentine belt causing it to lose power steering but other then that 0 problems😂
That’s still pretty damn reliable and it Sounds about like my 97’s trip to Florida from Kentucky! It made it but like, my drivers side Axle almost gave out, it started shaking once I hit Tennessee on the way back and I just sent it and changed the axles when I got back.
One of the outstanding features of this car = NON Interference engine. If Timing belt breaks, "usually" the engine is unharmed. That reliability and potential cost savings alone makes these cars and engines gold, if the rest of the car is in reasonable condition. Consider: GMC Acadia Terrain Enclave etc have a timing chain with well known problems. Conservative estimate to replace = $3,000 USD. Engine OUT operation. Yes, some can do it in car, but why even risk owning it. Stay gold.
as a men of the old car series in enthusiasm I can tell u one thing no matter what disagreement they saying about others cuss I heard it from way to many people so lisent Toyota Corolla along with any Toyota brand will last a full life time until u passed away as in the modern car gen nowadays will pop the check engine light in afterward or possible worst ended in a car junk yard 100% guarantee or mechanical engineering problems the old cars are lasting way longer than the modernized version respect ur cars in threat it well
Fantastic video! These cars really are solid, except for when rust starts to take over. - Oh, and some of the 1996 and 1997 models came with a dealer or port-installed keyless entry and security system, although it is getting harder and harder to find one that has it. It's called the "Toyota VIP RS3000", and they have a very unique and quirky panic alarm sound. But those systems are actually pretty decent and useful, since they come with a whole ton of features, such as the keyless entry, glass breakage sensor, automatic rearming, door ajar warning, and some other features I can't remember.
Huge thanks! Also, I had no idea that was even an option, I’m definitely going to be doing some research to learn about that. Big facts on the rust as well, here in Kentucky it’s nearly impossible to find one that is not completely rusted out, mine has a decent hole in the passenger side rocker panel that I’ll be fixing this spring.
Bought a 93 corolla with just 79,800 miles. Changed the plugs , Ngk, Timing belt and plug wires. Runs pretty good. Now I just need knew shocks and struts. Lol. Whats a good cheap after market?
I don’t know if you still remember me. But we met at harbor freight about a week ago. I am the owner of the black 97 Toyota Corolla with the 300k plus mile sticker. You probably seen me in the neighborhood. Anyway one day hope we cross paths again. Please make a how to video on your trailer hitch.
@@kylesjunkandprojects216 Hey Got a question that I'm hoping you could help me out with: 1997 Corolla DX, 5 Speed. On acceleration, either cold or warmed up, it has a massive misfire only while driving. It's like I'm jamming the brake for a literal split second and then it's good again. It does this multiple times. No engine lights or codes.... Any idea?
@@Karle.p I have heard of the module in the distributor failing and causing this issue. I haven’t personally experienced it, but if it were me, I’d find a good/cheap distributor at the junkyard and throw it on to see if it makes any difference. I hate loading the parts cannon but with no codes, that’s a tough diagnosis.
I have one that i will be letting go soon. She is very rusty but i drove it for 8 years and got into 2 accidents. I zip tied the bumper and drove it for another 2 years. But know it's gonna need brakes and tires, probably suspension work, and the oil smells like gas so probably gonna need new fuel injectors too. Plus the front end is mest up from the previous accidents so it doesn't make sense to add any more money into it. These were great cars im gonna miss it. Mine was a green 97 dx.
ive been drifting my -96 in the snow for 3 years only changed the starter, alternator, brakes and oil and the filter once the shocks are fucked and it burns oil but it still works
I wish I could tell you but I have no idea about the inner workings of automatic transmissions. The good news is that those transmissions are dirt cheap used.
Those are the last best generation Corollas 1997!! In1998 was ruined. 4A-FE and 7A-FE were 500.000 mile motors if properly taken care of. So were "AISIN' transmissions. Some of those were made in Canada USA and Japan. I prefere the ones that were made in Japan as they were the most reliable.
So stoked to get a 95 w/160k for 600 at yard sale, when i was about to leave frustrated and empty handed. Has a/t, cold a/c, new tires, was gonna paint it, and sell, but im kinda in love with if now considering I prolly wont ever have to buy another car this lifetime.
Very true, I made this video before the market went crazy, I bet now I’d be lucky to get that car for $3k-$3500. I hope your corolla project goes well!
snagged one at goodwill for 1500 in this economy .. lmaooo going to store it till winter and ride electric motorcycle all summer until it gets to cold lml then get 30 miles a gallon and use
Got a 94 automatic love tht lil baby🖤 got it for 800$. Ran perfect when i 1st got it it only needs fixing due to my own stupidity not knowing anything about cars lol
I’ve got a. 94 1.8 manual with the gts head swap from a 91 gts, and the Mrp kit. running 85 mr2 camshafts. Also has the close ratio 6 speed from the Japanese blacktop engine.
@1:42 what does it mean they like to be short shifted? Do you mean the travel of the shifter is not as far or long as a Honda? Cause I think it's a desirable trait they don't travel as long and that's kinda the point of some aftermarket shifters.
My 1997 CE has been fantastic, I did have to repair some typical old age/ low mileage neglect issues with mine when I got it, mainly rubber components like motor mounts, hoses and a radiator, as well as other odds and ends, they’re old cars, so stuff will break more often, but they’ve got good bones!
Yeah well I just bought a 97 CE with 70,000 Mi on it for 32 a couple of days ago a great deal all that crap for Less with high miles 2000 43000 with high miles on it it's all garbage I see ones with 250,000 Mi 300,000 Mi station wagon to 6 grand that's a total rip
I just bought a 96 I've replaced just about everything I bought some cheap motor mounts they went bad quick How is urs on the highway it feels like it wanders a little Is that normal And my check engine light is on due to emissions Any thoughts
Mine has always wandered a bit on the highway. I’m assuming it is due to my bad control arm Bushings that I have never replaced. If I were you, I would at least make sure your tie rods are in good shape since that is a safety hazard. Most of these have the CEL on, if it’s for something relating to emissions that isn’t affecting reliability, I’d probably just ignore it.
I don’t, I have the base model CE trim level, I think either the DX or LE trim has a tilt steering wheel, it’s a pretty in depth swap, that’s why I haven’t done it.
I own a 1997 and I bought it for 300 bucks and I’m about to drive her to Fort Worth Texas and see what happens it’s got 250,000 miles on it I bought it for 246,000 miles replaced radiator water pump thermostat housing and four struts tires head gasket
New York do you want one too bad when you do get one it's going to be garbage because you don't know what to look for I own thousands of these cars it's worth to pay $4,000 for the right one not $1,000 or $500 for a piece of s***
My 95 corolla LE now has 285k miles. Only thing now is a power steering leak, changed the break lights a few times. Interior is faded, of course. Need a new head liner bc lord help you if it flakes.
I have a 1997 Toyota Corolla DX, 1.8 liter engine, auto transmission with overdrive. Does it have a differential?? I changed my transmission fluid and filter 2 1/: years ago, and I don’t think I found a differential.
Mine burn oil about every 2700 miles on the clock, my transmission fluid is black when. I got it, got new rotor and cap and it just got a new timing belt done and water pump, was going to change fuel filter today but got lazy.
@@kylesjunkandprojects216 i been getting a good 35 mpg after all the tune up with all new spark plugs, and new spark plugs wires and rotors it behave even better with those touch up, it still got the oem alternator from 26 years ago and original radiator frok 1996. I am going to go check ut your other corolla videos- I subscribed.
howd you fix the rattling? Ive got the same car and the same problem lol
replaced the spark plugs and a new wire kit, and my wagon is new, 262403miles, and a new waterpump.
I really like the rear of this car. Looks so 90s japanese which it is....
Excellent video Kyle....brings on pure nostalgia 🙏
I bought a 96 for $450 with 280k on the odometer. I probably put less than $800 in it during ownership & drove that car for 40k at 321k & the person i sold it to drove off with it 😊😊😊😊. I love these Toyota's
Just swapped a 4AGE 20v silvertop into my 95 Rolla
Needless to say, I am having lots of fun :)
i recently swapped a 4AGE 20v Blacktop W/ ITB’s on my 95’ Rolla DX Sedan aswell !!! let’s race 🏎
@Coby Williams fuck yeah man!! The 4age I found only had 65k miles on it so this gives me lots of hope!
You’ll have that car for another 20 years
My 88 civic AC still works !
Very interesting,I had the Europeean model in France,it was a 2 liters diesel engine and I made 390000 miles with this car....
One of the best Toyotas ever made..🏅
I have a 95 and its the best daily car ever cheap to maintain and sturdy as a tank
I’m about to go buy one posted 50 minutes ago, 1995, 180k miles, $1200 , manual transmission. About to check all of these things.
I live in new England let me tell u the heat in these cars are so good
$850.00 for the one i found 200k onit runs new!!! Love these things go forever
They really are great cars, and dirt cheap too!
@@kylesjunkandprojects216 yessss very pleased when i found it 😊 great vid thank you
@@kylesjunkandprojects216 I dunno if it was true or not but someone selling a 97 with 2 million miles onit thats CRAZY!!!!
The RIGHT oil is IMPORTANT, for the top end ie camshaft etc, at start up you NEED the oil to get around engine QUICKLY VERY VERY QUICKLY UNLESS you want a dead engine!! 🥶🥶
A GOOD quality battery a little larger than spec, good tires, cambelt change, water pump normally at same time wash it sometimes DO NOT THRASH the car LOOK AFTER IT IT WILL LOOK AFTER YOU!!!! 👍👍👍👍
I got a white one with dark blue interior loooks cool
Best car ever made
I agree!
94 for 400,. manual. oh what a feeling.
That’s a friggin steal, less than a third of what I paid for mine!
@@kylesjunkandprojects216 yup as soon as i get the alternator tightened itl be running again
Stay gold.
as a men of the old car series in enthusiasm I can tell u one thing
no matter what disagreement they saying about others cuss I heard it from way to many people so lisent
Toyota Corolla along with any Toyota brand will last a full life time until u passed away as in the modern car gen nowadays will pop the check engine light in afterward or possible worst ended in a car junk yard 100% guarantee or mechanical engineering problems
the old cars are lasting way longer than the modernized version
respect ur cars in threat it well
They still made phone books in 1999, sit on that. Lurnin to love my Corolla.
reliable easy to work on tough cars. I have the 3 speed auto one and its pretty slow but an amazing round town car.
@@kylesjunkandprojects216 guess why I'm I watching this
I actually have that version of the car and it is so annoying lmaoo
I'm a big fan of the mr2 wheels on the corolla. Never seen it before this vid.
Thanks! I randomly found them at the local junkyard to replace my factory steelies.
A car that I recommend if you want something cheap and good, I recommend it from my own experience.
Bought a 93 corolla with just 79,800 miles. Changed the plugs , Ngk, Timing belt and plug wires. Runs pretty good. Now I just need knew shocks and struts. Lol. Whats a good cheap after market?
Congrats on the new Corolla! I used kyb quick struts from rock auto, and have had them for about 20k miles, they’ve been great.
Yea kybs are good. Dont forget to put in new engine mounts. It's a pretty easy job and it helped the ride quality in my 95 Dx immensely
@@anthonyramirez1341 agreed, my motor mounts were toasted at 100k when I got my car, one of the first few things I did.
@@kylesjunkandprojects216 thanks, I sure will.

Just came across this video and thought it was cool that we have the same Corolla and mercedes lol
330,128 miles on my 1994. Still going strong.
Wow! Hopefully mine makes it that far! I’m only at 127k now.
@@kylesjunkandprojects216 Hey
Got a question that I'm hoping you could help me out with:
1997 Corolla DX, 5 Speed.
It's my first family it's been 22 years I was 2 months old when we bought it. Till now I have never seen seats comfortable and soft as corollas 🥵
Miata wheels fit perfect too and hub centric
Thanks for the info I need some new wheels on my 95 corolla
ive been drifting my -96 in the snow for 3 years only changed the starter, alternator, brakes and oil and the filter once the shocks are fucked and it burns oil but it still works
Yeah I have a 1997 EX runs great 1.6 auto only power is steering and breaks less stuff can break the better. Gold paint and oak interior.
Best car ever made.
300.000 on my 93 DX Rolla. Having issues with the A245E automatic and the overdrive/lockup is out on it and I have to drive it like a standard shift.
I have this car 🚗
So stoked to get a 95 w/160k for 600 at yard sale, when i was about to leave frustrated and empty handed. Has a/t, cold a/c, new tires, was gonna paint it, and sell, but im kinda in love with if now considering I prolly wont ever have to buy another car this lifetime.
Not in this market lol I saw a few going $3000 with 200,000+miles. Lucky my family has one that I’m fixing up
Very true, I made this video before the market went crazy, I bet now I’d be lucky to get that car for $3k-$3500. I hope your corolla project goes well!
snagged one at goodwill for 1500 in this economy .. lmaooo going to store it till winter and ride electric motorcycle all summer until it gets to cold lml then get 30 miles a gallon and use

Shifted at a low rpm. It definitely isn’t as smooth to shift as other manual cars that I’ve had.
I like the 1997,s Toyota corolla the best out of all the corolla's.
I agree! Definitely my favorite corolla, I spent a while looking for this particular one.

Looking at a 97 CE with 85k miles for 3500$. Thinking about selling my optima for about 10-12k and ‘downgrading’ to this. Good idea?
Great vehicle
I just bought a 96
I've replaced just about everything I bought some cheap motor mounts they went bad quick
How is urs on the highway it feels like it wanders a little
Is that normal
And my check engine light is on due to emissions
Any thoughts
Mine has always wandered a bit on the highway. I’m assuming it is due to my bad control arm Bushings that I have never replaced. If I were you, I would at least make sure your tie rods are in good shape since that is a safety hazard. Most of these have the CEL on, if it’s for something relating to emissions that isn’t affecting reliability, I’d probably just ignore it.
