Preparing Materials for Primitive Fish Traps and the Black Hawk (episode 13)

  • Survival is about adaptation, and adapting to this new environment has been very challenging, especially in the primitive way. The pace of progress is so slow that it often frustrates me but I know that when I complete certain important projects then life will be easier. I really want to devote some time to making good fish traps so I can catch some fish. The protein and fat content will be very beneficial to my diet. I just have to find the appropriate natural materials and utilize bushcraft skills to make this happen. This series will be ongoing so be sure to stay tuned for the next video.

    Location: Parts Unknown
    FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
    Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
    Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?
I first started wearing sandals on outdoor adventures in February 2014. I’m so glad that I did because wearing these Luna Sandals has really helped strengthen my feet. You can see their selection of adventure and running sandals at this link: www.lunasandal...
(Note: I receive an affiliate commission from any sales derived from clicking on the link above)
    Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
    Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
    How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 48.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including RUclips. Sometimes I bought the music but usually it was free.

Thank you for these videos, Chad. The amount of work you put into them is amazing and really allows the viewer to experience it vicariously through you. I always love a nice hiking trip, but I don't think I'd be cut out for what you do. It does seem really peaceful though.
Also, I wanted to mention that my one year old daughter greatly enjoys your videos, too. It's pretty funny. Your videos are the one thing that keeps her absolutely mesmerized. She'll get super excited when she hears the familiar beat of the drums in the beginning of an episode and then just sit there and watch you document your time in nature. She must have an appreciation too even at such a young age haha.

Can only do so much in the heat and with extremely limited supplies! I think your progress is good. You're starting from nothing which takes longer than having already prepared things. If you had previously made fish traps, bigger water pots, etc before you came to this spot then I'm sure you'd have completed a lot more already. But this is part of the journey! This is how it would be if you had to throw away everything basically and start over. Or if you had to book it and run in an apocalyptic scenario. Don't go back to grab your cloak!

It's such a good news that you have found an alternative method to catch fish. With the materials of yucca fibers and mule fat, I think you should try making a fish-tackle called "nơm" in Vietnamese (this is a very tradtion, effective way to catch fish in my country). It is worth doing some research, and I hope that my idea will help you make a good fish-catching tool in the next videos!

Lots of wild life, like deer I know that seems like a good thing but he is not hunting big game and it could wake him up causing loss of sleep. There isn't much clay near rivers so he would have to hike
farther. Small wild life like rabbits Etc don't bed down near rivers they usually move farther away (Farther hike if he want's to hunt.) Animals are usually moving by there a lot for water so they could mess with his food and I could imagine a deer with its nose in one of his pots eating seeds lol. Even fish jumping out of the water every 10 seconds could mess with his sleep. It takes a while to boil the water and he only gets a small amount from waiting 25-40 minutes for it to boil, it is smarter to set-up camp near a small mountain spring coming out of a little cliff side; so he doesn't have to wait for it to boil.

@@English_Police even so, it feels like hes walking a solid hour to get to the river. His current location has nothing special, while in river there is a fish + you can set up traps for animals coming to drink, you can wash yourself twice a day and making bricks would be easier with a water source. He shouldnt sleep right at the shore ofc, but i think he would be better having a camp much closer to a river.

You can easily make a yucca bowstring strong enough for your bow. It's a favorite among plenty.
Others might include stinging nettle, or that leg tendon cinew.
Oh make hide glue!!!! Make it out of that nasty old cow hide, it should work.
The other thing I forgotten to mention, juniper works very well as a bow unseasoned. It's resistance to checking and low moisture content make it an excellent choice for unseasoned bow.

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  3 года назад

    • @ChadZuberAdventures

@@ChadZuberAdventures so that's where a snakeskin comes in handy.
It acts as a waterproof barrier and adds that special touch....
Historically hide glue was used in everywhere. You definitely don't want to soak it in water. But with that rawhide or snakeskin, I assure you it will work very well.
You know ishi? His bow was a sinew backed juniper flat bow. He used it on the California/ Oregon coast where it rains all day.
      Trust me it'll work.

you should apply for Alone! 500 thousand dollars, you have a shot! especially if you start out fat and know the area well. and can take it psychologically... cause that s why 90% fail. i d apply too if they ever made an international version!

I tried out for Alone, Naked and Afraid, Survivor, and a few other survival shows but I was not selected for any.

Have you thought of making an umbrella or parasol of sorts, so instead of having to wear the deerskin cloak you could still get protection from the sun and less heat being trapped closer to you? It could even serve as rain protection as well, if you make it watertight.

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  3 года назад +1

But then I'd have to hold the parasol. The cloak is quite nice actually. I have no complaints.

What is your off-camera gym routine? I suspect that you need to train 'normally' to keep these muscles. Apart from the question, the video is great. It makes you appreciate all the things readily available in life as well as the challenges of simple life which then reward you with hand-crafted tools and a sharp mind to survive in unfavourable environments.

I only worry that this mattress might be found as a awesome home for some spider or scorpion wandering around. I think you should give it a good shake everyday before resting on it.

I love your videos please keep them coming. It's like I'm watching a premitive Tarzan in the jungle. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.🤗❤️🌈
