"The Eiger Sanction" (1975) was Clint Eastwood's fourth picture with himself in the director's chair and to this day his most difficult to be shot. After previous successes, he felt a serious challenge of film making should mark his next project and the production of "Eiger" turned out to be exactly that for the cast and crew. The result is a movie with great scenery and cinematography, great stunts (Eastwood did his ones all by himself) and a fantastic musical score. John Williams, who certainly had his most fruitful and creative years during the 70s and 80s, provided a great and lush score for Eastwood's mountain-movie, cleverly adapting jazz and classical influences into his writing. And while we are now listening to the film version of the score, it must be said that the album arrangements are top notch (oh, the jazzy adaptations of the love theme!) and are very worth a listen, as well. They are yet another testament for Williams' very creative years and shouldn't be overlooked. Enjoy!
This movie changed my life. Clint Eastwood, the scenery, the music. It introduced me to the mountains and climbing and I was hooked! I go back to the Jungfraugebiet as often as I can, although my climbing days are behind me now. It's funny how something made for entertainment can have such a profound affect on someone's life.
After listening to this, I was inspired to watch the movie, which I enjoyed watching. There is quite a treasure trove of old movies that are worth watching.
Heard the egomaniac at Disney, Bob Iger, has a poster of this movie on his wall that reads "The Iger Sanction" so I decided to watch the movie to see what it was all about.. Once I heard Williams' theme I was hooked. Felt good to hear one of his pre-Star Wars scores. The guy is a freaking legend.
As i have said before there five pieces of film music STAR WARS ET RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK SUPERMAN and SCHINDERS LIST all john williams i have on cd JOHN WILLIAMS GREATEST HITS 1969 to 1999 others will follow no doubt
If you're interested in lesser known but awesome early John Williams, I STRONGLY recommend his soundtracks for Black Sunday (1977) and Dracula (1979). They are both fantastic in their own rights!
@@plastique45 how kind. I’ll get them immediately. I adore soundtracks. Thought I had most but you just educated me. Broadway is up there too. Thank you so much.
Holy Cow! Williams was certainly firing on all cylinders on this one! Lovely and evocative it reminds me at times of "The Towering Inferno" and a bit of Goldsmith's "The Last Run", and some Lalo Schrifrin thrown in. Having not seen this film, I can honestly say that the score holds up well on its own. I especially enjoy the theme/progression of the early piano-flute theme of the intro, 'Friends and Enemies' where it is developed, and elsewhere where it is repeated. The orchestration is lovely - especially the strings in "Running with George". Now I have to find the film and watch it. More money flying out of my wallet. Thanks Fred.
John Williams film scores are so incredibly varied. The range of his compositional talents are exceptional. Variations on a films theme is rarely used today. Williams is a master of that lost art. It's too bad that more often than not music is relegated behind sound effects as being important to modern films.
I was on You Tube about a couple of months ans somebody spoke about John Williams and said his music was okay , not in the class of Bernard Herrmann , but to me there five film soundtracks Star Wars ET Raiders of the Lost Ark Superman and Schinders list others Harry Potter ,Hook, Empire of the Sun and i pointed out i have seen all these films and also have on CD John Williams Greatest Hits !969 to 1999, i got no reply back
Goldsmith is the master (of theme and variation); for the last 50 years, John Williams has principally been a leitmotivic composer (which is too bad -- because, seemingly like you, I prefer a thematically synergetic approach that, really, makes more logical sense anyway).
Something I have always loved about JW scores is that he always comes with a full toolbox, i.e. you're getting ALL the instruments - oh, and a harpsichord...maybe a celeste? Who else does that? On almost every score!
Always liked this score, but for some reason I thought it was another composer. This is early John Williams, right around the same time he did "Jaws." Thanks for the upload, Fred. You're the best on You Tube when it comes to soundtracks !
Tenho essa raridade em vinil, original. Meu pai amava esse filme de Clint e sempre me pedia para colocar o disco no aparelho. Uma obra prima pouco conhecida de John Williams 🎼❤️
Hi, Fred! It is always interesting to hear Williams away from the influence of Spielberg. Here he is really alone, because Eastwood paid no attentions to musicians of the style of Williams. And I would like to know what idea the composer had in mind when he created a recurring theme in the style of Francis Lai for a spy film!... Williams is right when it changes the tone of the main theme in " The Icy Ascent "; in the grandiose " The Top of the World " ( something left over from " The Towering Inferno "); the bombastic " Fifty Miles of Desert " ( which starts with a frentic mid - low piano marked by a triangle and is gradually increased by the brass horns ); and other excellent tracks, like " The Microfilm Killing " and " Up the Drainpipe " ( once again, I have this soundtrack on vinyl )... Very interesting and curious!! Thanks, Fred, and bye!!
You are totally right! The video is now over ten years old, was based on the 1991 CD and had sloppy edits (and quality). I thought it was time to revisit this marvelous score. :-)

An underappreciated John Williams soundtrack with a great theme and jazz ques. Thanks!
I can’t believe Mr Williams composed this 48 years ago! Another winner!! Thank you as always. And it’s truly unique. Think ET. Vastly different music.

Not that early, he was 43 at this point and had been composing in Hollywood for over 15 years.

Wow, John Williams never sounded so, well...Jerry Goldsmith-esque.
Great movie with a great score
Theme like a blending of Goldsmith's SECONDS and THE LAST RUN
I can really hear all these hints of future Johnny scores in this one...like seeds of thought and music...
