This era of Fords was wild. My wife's 2009 Ford Focus (with ALL STOCK blacked out trim, RGB interior lighting, and a beefy sub) ran like a champ when we were in college, and we sold it to someone else who still drives it now
On more affordable cars. Maybach does two tone paint as an option on some of their cars, but it's an expensive option on what is already a very expensive car.
@@Kownterfiet1997 My father drove a 1980 Olds Cutlass Supreme that was black and silver. I wouldn't say that car had the body lines to make such a scheme look good, but it worked. I agree with you, some cars would look good, others not so much.
Not only did Ford switch to unibody for the Explorer, they switched to front wheel drive/AWD instead of rear wheel drive/4WD. It wasn't until 2020 that they went back to RWD, but they still kept the unibody design.
I Miss these Classic body on frame Ford Explorers, Mercury Mountaineers, and Lincoln Aviators. My family had three Explorers a 1992, 2000, and 2006. Then they got a 2010 Mercury Mountaineer, almost equipped like a Premier trim Mountaineer. I Wish Ford brought out the New 2011 5.0 V8 engine out Sooner, it would have fit the 4th generation Explorers and Mountaineers Perfectly.
Man I was thinking about sending in an application for my 08 Mercury Mountianeer right before I found this video! My grandparents bought it in 2010 and they LOVED the opening glass in the trunk. It's the 4.0 V6 which was supposedly the fuel efficient model, but if you look up the EPA estimates, the V8 and the V6 get the same combined MPG! Something I've noticed is that the ride is actually smoother compared to a few other unibody vehicles my families owned, I thank the smaller rims and big tires. One more thing I love about these is what this whole review is centered around, it's a truck! I've been in a few "situations" that after I'd get out of, I'd tell myself "I couldn't do that in X car!" I also love the ride height, earlier today I was stopped next to a brand new Suburban at a light and I realized that the woman driving it was only a couple inches higher than I was LOL. I'm so happy to finally see this generation Explorer / Mountaineer on this channel! It's been a long time waiting. Love this channel : ) I love this car to death and I plan on keeping it for as long as possible, even though the Pennsylvania rust has gotten to it.. EDIT: Also the door handles to get out of the car I really like. I also like seeing peoples reaction the first time they get in the car trying to figure out how to open the door LOL
My grandpa had one when I was in elementary school I remember thinking it was really premium at the time and I loved those weird door handles. He didn’t have it long he replaced it with a 2012 fusion SEL which in hindsight was probably the nicer vehicle.
I have an ‘06 Limited with the V8 and 4WD. To me, it does ride a lot smoother than some of its competitors at the time due to the Independent rear suspension but it’s definitely no Lexus. I also love how much space it has when both 2nd and 3rd Row seats are folded flat.
Zack, I have an Eddie Bauer winter coat that is a decade older than this Ford. 😁 The odd thing about this generation of body-on-frame Explorer is its independent rear suspension at a time when sedans like the Crown Vic, Grand Marquis and Town Car still had solid rear axles. 🤔
My parents had the Mercury version of this exact generation of Explorer while I was a kid, (The Mountaineer). Other than the transmission going out, (figures for a ford product), it really was a good car at the time.
2valves didint have cam phaser noise on start up/cam phaser failure. 3valves such as ths 5.4 3valve had a 2 piece spark plug design that would break when removing. Thats partly why ford owners seek the 2valve modulars except the v10 which doesnt have those timing component issues.
I had a mercury mountaineer basically a “luxury” version of this and I loved it my grandpa bought it new in 2003 and I got it as my first car it was beige on beige on beige and I miss it very much
my dad has an 06 one of these. currently at 190,000s miles and still going. screen has never given us trouble. Only thing he dislikes is the gas mileage which is like 18-20 for him. Currently the only problem has been the rear seat which has the power down cargo motor option which failed about 100,000 miles ago so I guess avoid cars with that option.
My mom had a '08 Eddie Bauer with the 4.0L "Boat Anchor" V6. It would make a better boat anchor than an engine, hence the nickname. These looked good at the time, but the interior was full of cheap-looking hard plastics that shouldn't be in a vehicle costing $50k (adjusted for inflation). Her rear A/C failed twice, costing $2k to repair the first time and warrantied when it failed 18 months later. When it was barely five years old and with 95k miles, the transmission started having intermittent problems shifting in and out of O/D. She traded it on a 2013 Mazda CX-9. What doesn't make sense is that her previous car was a tank...and it was a 2003 Ford Explorer! Same engine and transmission and it was actually 4WD (the '08 was RWD). My sister bought it when mom got her '08. It was trouble-free until she hit a deer and totaled it in 2015 with 227k miles.
3rd row like a minivan, but the 3rd row has less space then a minivan. Ford discontinued its minivan in 2008 in favor of SUVs like the Explorer. Minivans do have some advantages over SUVs. This SUV is truck-based while the minivan is car based
hey zack, you should point out when cars have that key pad entry so you can still get in if you lock your keys in the car. I feel like ford products always have them from this era while gm never did
I think your review is the best I have seen and make me want to sell my Ford Five Hundred for this, even more than I want the later generation. Your review is detailed to the point of testing the 3rd row the way a practical family will use it. Thank you. By the way, I just subscribed.
My mom has a 2006 explorer Eddie Bauer and it has well over 220k miles on it, she drives it every day and it runs like a champ. She has the 4.0 in it, but it’s still a little beast
I have one of these! Mine is the Limited rather than the EB. It makes a great practical counterpart to my NA Miata. I think it might pass the BFB test with the cup holders in the door.
Was this vehicle also the Mercury Mountaineer? My sister and her husband had one. We took a road trip all over New England, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia in it.I was in 2nd row most the time and it was quite comfy.
Glad you got this last generation of the Body on frame Ford Explorer with the top trim Eddie Bauer with two tone black and tan leather seats does this Explorer came with duffle bags garment bags
Very strange that the 2nd row has the 40 split on the driver side instead of the passenger. Passenger is default so you could pick up everyone curb side, only the driver technically needs to get out in the street.
I don't understand the Explorer. A minivan seems like a better choice for most situations, better on gas, easier to use the 3rd row, same amount of space, but some more rear seat comfort features. If you're going off road, a smaller car/SUV seems better, as you can avoid the obstacles.
What, you don't like 2009? The heck?!?? Alphabetically... Acura churns out a 3.7 SH-AWD drivetrain, BMW brings out an M 1 series, Ford has GT500's and body on frame Explorers, Honda still has the S2000, Lexus has an ISF, Mazda has a boosted Speed 3, Mercedes has Black Series V8 AMGs, Nissan launches the 370Z while still having body on frame Pathfinders, Porsche models look good again, Subaru makes a hatchback STI and Toyota still offers a V8 4-Runner. You were saying?????????
Been patiently waiting to see my truck, lol!
I’m Victor btw!

Damn, i watched the whole video and im still waiting to see a truck

I have this Explorer. Mine is a V8 too. Super reliable and tough. Its an actual truck.....
Well it’s basically an f150 suv it’s got the same Motor from the time and a lot of components
They don’t make cars like that anymore
Two tone paint schemes need to come back! lol
On more affordable cars. Maybach does two tone paint as an option on some of their cars, but it's an expensive option on what is already a very expensive car.
automanufatures will charge a $5000 for such an option
the problem is most new cars don't have the body lines where 2-tone would look good

This was the last real Explorer. I hate Crossovers. These hold up much better in an accident with the full frame.

Such a good looking vehicle. The explorers design went backwards after this generation
I miss all those clean lines on that era of explorer / expeditions... And Eddie Bauer colors will never grow old.

I love the looks of that generation Explorer & that's a VERY clean example!

Beautiful truck. Ford did awesome in 1980's up to late 90's with two tone paint....

What 3 valve means is the spark plugs have never been changed because they're so prone to breaking that no shop will even touch the job.
Facts. We won't touch plugs on a 4.6, 5.4, or a 6.8. We send them to the dealer, too busy to deal with that nonsense.
My parents had the Mercury version of this exact generation of Explorer while I was a kid, (The Mountaineer). Other than the transmission going out, (figures for a ford product), it really was a good car at the time.
Wow! The paint and leather look pretty much like new. This is a well cared for vehicle. Love to see it.

It can tow more too over the unibody; and trailer tongue weight is less of an issue.

2007 was the last year Ford made minivans.
You cannot go off-road with minivans.
@@w1ldm4n82 yes as minivans are car based.
ford nailed it with this one and the sport trac
hey zack, you should point out when cars have that key pad entry so you can still get in if you lock your keys in the car. I feel like ford products always have them from this era while gm never did
Fun fact, the first car to have that was a Nissan in the late 1980's.

I was wondering when you would review one of these ,love the body style
Looks like a nice clean looking example.
If they bring back this car then I will buy it so fast
I can tell those gauges made John Davies mad
The last real explorer that can be called an suv, next one was a crossover
Can young kids even decipher Eddie Bauer..... being that it is in cursive here in this logo:)
Very strange that the 2nd row has the 40 split on the driver side instead of the passenger. Passenger is default so you could pick up everyone curb side, only the driver technically needs to get out in the street.
They more reliable than the 2010 and up explorers
I rented a 2009 once and I couldn’t figure out the interior door handles. After panicking thinking I was stuck in this suv i found out how to get out.
I have never seen a V8 with selectable 4WD. They're usually just automatic 4x4. I've only seen the selective 4WD on the V6.
I've got a 2006 xlt advance trac v8 with same leather just not a eddie bauer edition
i had one as well as everyone on long sland.
These are bulletproof vehicles compared to the Ecoboost garbage engines are placed in recent Fords.

As a ford guy i love it...however thing i wanna know is. Does the 4.6 3v have the same issues as the 5.4 3v or is very good as the 4.6 2v?
No, all the 4.6 Liter V8 enu are So Dependable and Reliable, More than the 5.4 3 Valve.

The Eddie Bauer brand went bankrupt shortly after this generation, hence why the trim died.
Also this vehicle was produced during the Great Recession
Is this model fuel efficient?
In the Philippines, this is called the Everest.
Cool

Wrong again Zack: Eddie Bauer started working with Ford in the mid 80’s on Bronco and Bronco II’s.
