You make it look so easy. Having the right gear to do the job helps. wish I had filmed the projects I have done in the past. I cut down an old pearl kit into shallow tom hyperdrive type kit. Stained and painted it like one of the tama finishes. It worked so well. I have a double bass drum kit with a mounted bass drum too just for fun and a stand up kit using a floor tom as bass drum bottom and cut down floor tom on top with a gap in between that works well too. And all techniques were from you tube. Thank you anyone that uploaded.
Why do Lance and RdavidR hate the idea of the breakfast kit so much? They are probably just acting like they don't like the idea, but secretly they are creating one, that will be released outta nowhere.
Also, I tried tuning it down super low, but it was too slappy, this is as low as I could get it while still producing a tone. I probably need to get a new head though since this is the one that has been on that kick for at least 10 years... lol
This brotha rdavidr is Godhead, designing his own drums and hardware mods, you name it whatever he makes and modifies absolutely NEVER disappoints! Always learning new stuff from him!
I was surprised at how good that drum sounded. I am looking make one myself but having a heck of a time finding a cheap (very cheap) 20" bass drum to chop up. Nice work.
Do a DIY project called the wal-mart or target drum where you make the wrap out of possibly wallpaper and also decorate a the head (bass drum) and what else you can think of
oddly enough, i found out about your channel just by typing in the youtube page drum hacks and what not and there behold, your channel popped up and started watching your videos and thought your channel is amazing. Keep up dave you rock
Wow! Very cool build! I'm shocked that the tom isolator held so well. I woulda thought that there was too much cantilevered mass. I wonder how long before either the shell breaks at this connection, or the isolator metal fatigues?
I was thinking why not use an extra floor tom instead, but I guess this as 2 bonuses over an extra floor Tom, it's portable and you can put it mounted on a stand anywhere around your kit. Great job David
Dang nice! You can also try using either that or the Pizza kick as an additional resonator to put in front of the bass drum. Always love your videos! Cheers!
Oh man thats a tough question... It would either be my Tama or the blue kit (I think its an Appollo) Im using in this video. I might just be saying that though since this was the first time I actually played that kit haha
Awesome! I did something similar last year to match my ddrum Hybrid 6, but I mounted it like a literal gong, and mounted a trigger in it, to actually trigger a gong sound from a Roland TM-2 module🤟 EDIT: NO idea why it took 6 years for me to see this video.
I have no intention of ever building drums... and really, I'm a guitar player who can kinda-sorta hold my own on drums. I'm not even a drummer. I have no idea why I watch your videos.... BUT I LOVE THEM
Your demonstration grooves are always so creative, could you suggest me any exercises or books you studied that might have helped you on that?? Thanks dude
Dude, I used that very same contact paper on an old set of drums that I had way back in the 80's. I put two sets together and recovered them with that same simulated wood look as you used. Cool huh!
I've always had a concept of how important your hardware is in the set. Could you possibly try getting a very inexpensive set, but upgrade all the hardware on the drums. Thanks
Rad drum dude. The only thing I would say would be that instead of wrapping it in fake wood, a quick hit of 60 grit and then 120 grit sandpaper and rub it down with some tongue oil since it's already made out of wood , would be a good idea. Anything you add to the outer shell will affect the resonance of the wood. And there's not much better than the look and feel of natural wood. But besides that hella rad drum dude
you gotta put everything you've ever made into one kit dude
Yeees
that's a lot of bass drum beaters..
DUFF Beer isn't
The only problem is that he reuses a lot of his materials
Yes
Sounds great! I wish more drummers would add such a drum to their kits. Plus, it's nice to hear a groove without hi hat or cymbals.
Watching you poke those holes in the wrap for the lugs was oddly satisfying.
There is nothing this man cannot do
RDR for prez
shave?
MrWarMage lol

BREAKFAST KIT HAS OFFICIALLY STARTED!
and in the same video it has ended
But... bacon kick drum...
rdavidr ah well. it was good while it lasted.
+rdavidr but but, like syrup cymbals

I would be interested to hear it with a single ply EMAD on it. You would definitely get some sub frequencies then.
yeah put a new head, and please let us hear the 16" snare without muting it
Use just a plain head instead. Gong drums should resonate the same way symphonc bass drums do.
rdavidr make a timpani next
rdavidr nvm now
This brotha rdavidr is Godhead, designing his own drums and hardware mods, you name it whatever he makes and modifies

That pancake sounds BAD ASS in fills when complemented with the bass.
I mean it's essentially a stick played kick drum, but I love it!
Gong bass drums have more in common with symphonic bass drums played with mallets than with drumset bass drums.
That thing sounds sweet!
I was surprised at how good that drum sounded. I am looking make one myself but having a heck of a time finding a cheap (very cheap) 20" bass drum to chop up. Nice work.
I watched this like 12 times only to listen the music.....it's so good...

i love how you just do what you want its the best, not following any trends or anything its great

That would be sick!! I hope he sees this !!!
+Chris Morgan yeah it would be sick
I like dis idea
hello fabric store?
Great video man! Another cool DIY project. I like it when you wrap the drums because I'm gonna have to with this new kit I bought
oddly enough, i found out about your channel just by typing in the youtube page drum hacks and what not and there behold, your channel popped up and started watching your videos and thought your channel is amazing. Keep up dave you rock
Still one of my most favorite rdavidr's videos! Just love it over & over :)
Wow! Very cool build! I'm shocked that the tom isolator held so well. I woulda thought that there was too much cantilevered mass. I wonder how long before either the shell breaks at this connection, or the isolator metal fatigues?

Damn. Sounds great! That groove was a killer way to demonstrate it too!
I love the part beginning at 4 mins.!!! Very cool. Thank you, rdavidr!!
I like that there are "how to make pancakes" videos in the suggestions, lol. Great build by the way, always quality content coming from this channel.
You make the most awesome stuff man! You make me want to hack up some of my old drums and make cool new stuff. Please keep up the videos.
This is the first thing I thought of when I first saw one of these, it's a kickdrum cut at the edge...cool diy.
This loop is awesome! It fit super well with the video
Dang nice!
You can also try using either that or the Pizza kick as an additional resonator to put in front of the bass drum.
Always love your videos! Cheers!
That groove is solid. So is the drum.
Wow!! Didn't think I would like this but it's freaking cool man and it sounds awesome!
Nice! In any of your videos have you talked about what would be your desert island kit?
Oh man thats a tough question... It would either be my Tama or the blue kit (I think its an Appollo) Im using in this video. I might just be saying that though since this was the first time I actually played that kit haha
Anyone can buy a Tama.. the Apollo is cool and unique! I playa a Tama kit. It's nice but nothing special. The blue kit have that cool vintage vibe.
Driftwood kit
by far my favorite drum he's made
I’ve always preferred the old tama styling of gong drums tuned up but this is sick regardless! I love silly lil extras
that white lithium grease is a lifesaver
You are one of the awesomest RUclipsrs ever!!!!
Awesome! I did something similar last year to match my ddrum Hybrid 6, but I mounted it like a literal gong, and mounted a trigger in it, to actually trigger a gong sound from a Roland TM-2 module🤟

Sounds amazing! Great build!

Loved the intro! The drum was thick and fluffy to!
I love how you went with the YESS mount on this
Great work Dave, now looks much better.
Wow, that drumming was absolutely fantastic!! Wrapping a drum seems to be a tedious process
Your demonstration grooves are always so creative, could you suggest me any exercises or books you studied that might have helped you on that?? Thanks dude
I would like to know as well.
Yeah I would also be interested.
And I as well
same
yep. same
That backtrack is awesome.
Love all these projects
very deep vintage sounding. love it
Great job, always been drawn to gong drums for some reason.
nice! its like the gong drum that Thomas lang has on a kit set up. keep up the great work!😀
Dude, I used that very same contact paper on an old set of drums that I had way back in the 80's. I put two sets together and recovered them with that same simulated wood look as you used. Cool huh!
I wish I had a table saw. I have an old bass I've never used that would be perfect for this sort of application. 👍🏻👍🏻
Best part of the video is your dead eyes when you play drums
Woah! What? He make a Pancake from a Pizza! Amazing!
now what to do with this offcut?
What a good idea. To finish it of you should build a cocktale drum set. Just for fun.
that sounds/looks frickin awesome dude, great work
great ideas and a great drummer.
Pancake drum, pizza kick. What's next on the drum menu?
norush jello cymbal
Holy drum (A donut)
Parmigiana Stack.
I funking love that groove you played at the end. ice video, man.
Drum sounds sick!
One of your best stuff for me !!
Wich inches it git?
The drum actually sounds really good.
Would be cool to hear it close mic'd with a Beta 52, or a D112, etc.
I don't know how you would do it cause of the mounting style, but it'd be cool to see you use this thing as a kick drum, just as a test
3:50. that sounds really good
I like it A LOT for some reason
I friggin' love this guy.
The beginning! The computer part was so funny!
Wow, that sounds amazing actually
Sweet! I love stuff like that.
would you mind doing a quick video on the 2nd groove you do
2:48 can you please write the name/model/brand of this drum mount? Thanks a lot!
I've got a question: Is that possible to turn a tom into a rototom?
i could hear the song tell me baby by RHCP while you were testing the new pancake drum
Nice! Since you're always cutting down drums, I was wondering if you ever made a traveler kit like the one Pearl offers.
I wonder how it would sound with a single ply with no muffling. I would love to hear it again, now that your current setup has upgraded mics.
That loon sound killed me 😂
Sean Hogan o my gahd you’re that guy with making this out of that videos!
I love gong drums. I made one. But I took it off my kit but I never found a way to use it
Man that thing sounds dope!
could you make a tutorial on how to apply wood veneer? thanks for your videos, are always so inspiring..!
Could it be a good idea to mount the clamp on the inside so it's easier for the stand to remain in place?
Can you please make a drum tutorial on the fills you were doing?
Really nice groove!
I'd love a tutorial of that funky beat at the end!
I love this. What depth did you make this?
I found a matching bass drum shell online for my kit I could use for this.
Nice work!
Great work sounds great!
I love drums and Pancakes. Nice beat at 3:57
I wanna see you combine everything you have to make a super big kit
speaking of deep vintage. you should totally put a Aquarian deep vintage drumhead on that thing lol would sound so dope :)
Why do they always use Bassdrum Hoops for the gongdrum can't you have a Gong Drum with a Tom Hoop or isn't that good?
4:13 KNOW THAT FEEL.
I've been trying to practice to a metronome every now and then.
Sounds awesome!
how about using the jumbo gel on it?
I've always had a concept of how important your hardware is in the set. Could you possibly try getting a very inexpensive set, but upgrade all the hardware on the drums. Thanks
Sweet vid dude! Sounds pretty damn good.
Where do you find these awesome songs you play during the video their so Catchy
I love the concept. I'd just like to hear this pancake with a more lively head.
But besides that hella rad drum dude
i bet your jumbo gel would sound cool on this drum
pancake drum, pizza kick. I think the food kit is slowly coming to life :D
This sounds very nice actualy!
How loud it is? I wonder how it sounds without microphone with rest of the drum kit.
