💕😰😅
Hi, thank you for this information. I am also finishing my MSN in informatics. I am considering joining the AF as well. Your perspective gives me hope! Thank you 😊
your degree will help understand how systems work in the military. it kinda drives me mad. lol
I am really interested of joining the military as a nurse. I was about to get into the Army one time but I was denied because I got my degree outside the US.
I was asked to take MSN Leadership here in the US first and then apply in the military again.
Right now i am happy working in the civilian world. I am happy as a staff nurse working here in California. I didnt enroll yet to take MSN because I am still brainstorming if its really worth it to give up my civilian nurse job to get into the military.
I am happy and thankful where I am now but at the same time i have this desire deep inside of me to get into the military.
Never deny your desires, it will always stick in the back of your head if you continue to deny something that you want to do. You can do it like I did, but take your time and make sure it's what you want. Pray hard and i'm sure the answers will come to you in time.
I'm happy that you're happy with what you're doing! Not a lot of people can say that. It's great to hear about a different avenue to nursing. My brother was a pharmacist in the AF for like 5 years but felt capped at his position. He had no room for growth in terms of ranking and pay grade. I wonder if you hear the same thing but in nursing too.
ok so, nursing is not like pharmacy. Pharmacy is straight forward you really need to know pharmacology and absolutely everything about its chemistry; he too will have officer positions. The nursing corps, has a lot of venues to which they will grow you and have the opportunities to go to school, leadership school, NSM, etc. When comparing the two they function very differently in the hospital; hospitals use nurses in very different ways as nurses are similar to doctors without the prescription/diagnosing part unless you become an np or crna; then you will function under their wing. there's a reason i emphasize taking your time, because when you make it to the top, there's no where else really to go unless you learn new things or even get new degrees. In terms of pay, i see it as a long term investment because of the healthcare and also the bonuses to which you are afforded. You can continue to go up in time in rank, but at one point of your career you will function sideways. Pay is similar to others in rank, but all depends on how you view money.
OMG! Thank you for uploading your video. I've been thinking about going into the AF after 15 yrs of nursing...but still hesitant...
definitely reach out to a recruiter to see what kind of options they can give you.
Did you do it? I just realized the age cutoff 47!! 😮😮!!
i'm 38 not in nursing but I want to join 😲
Hi kuya, glad to see you..:). I’ve watched your old videos before when I’m still trying to figure out what I want after I passed my board as Lvn. You are such an inspiration to lots of people, not only in the medical industry but in general. I’m one of them to be honest. Take care always! Your journey to be this positive light to help others through your work gives you more blessings and blesses others ❤️
Hello Ruby! I'm glad that it has that effect on you! I'm glad you passed your LVN! make sure you land that RN! there are no limits, you can do a lot just keep going and making sure you find your place in the medical world! proud of you!
I’m already serving via NG when I’m done with my BSN I’m interested in commissioning!
Glad to see you doing your thing bro
Thank you Joshua, I appreciate you!
I’m 46 with 10 years of experience and thinking about joining before I age out.
That's so cool that you can use informatics in the AF. What's your recruiter's information? I'd like to join AD
please contact me genesisantos@gmail.com
2 month orientation?! Thats nice
yes haha i guess it could also be dependent at each MTF
great information here boss, but your audio is a bit quiet and echo-y. Just some small feedback, good otherwise
Thank you for the feedback. Need to fix the audio feedback for the following videos.
I’m happy you are loving your time in the Air Force and your job! I am currently a travel nurse and have been a nurse for close to three years now and I am interested in possibly joining the Air Force in the future. I was wondering if I could possibly have your recruiters contact info by chance? Best wishes and thanks for your videos!
yes, reach out to me genesisantos@gmail.com
I'm currently in a nursing program at a regular university, I don't have time at the moment to do ROTC at the moment but I want to eventually go into the air force, purely because I'm passionate about it (not for student debt or anything). My plan is to get my BSN and work in the private sector first for a year or two. I'm wondering if you have any advice on how to go about getting into the air force or what it is like compared to the private sector?
two completely different worlds when it comes to freedom. you're more free, to do things in the civilian world versus the air force world. progression is very slow if you come blue first. they want to build you up when it comes to professionalism and growth versus civilian where you are rushed to get out the bedside and end up doing advanced things. it all depends on your outlook and what you want to do with nursing. if you come in you have to have an open mind and know that progression is slow and will take time.
I heard many nurses regret joining the military.
I am a 47 year old RN with 1 year of experience in Telemetry and 5 years in EMS. I am currently in a 6 month OR training program and would like to join the Air national guard or Air Force reserves once training is completed. Would I be too old and if so, what are the chances of getting an age waiver?
agr cut off is 45. you can try a waiver. if you have no comorbidities and are in excellent condition it may fair well. you'll need to speak with a recruiter further.
@Genesis Santos Thanks for the info Genesis!
How to apply for military nurse?
Find a recruiter to the branch you want to go into.
What's the age limit? I work in psych. However, I hear that you can't pick your specialty.
not true. it depends on the specialty you come in with. if you come in as a new grad you will be on medsurg route/clinic, then have the ability to branch out to icu etc etc. age limit is 45.
@@genesis.kts_ I appreciate you and your content. 💪🏾
@@ObjectivelyBias Thank you for your support!
So if I’m a bsn rn I don’t have to do bootcamp / basics ? If that’s the case I’m in 😂
nope. just leadership school which is officer training school ;)
What do you think about enlisting and using the Air Force to get your BSN?
I know people doing that right now. it's a matter of perspective honestly. if you have money don't enlist, but if you don't it's a way to afford it in 4 years after enlistment
Did you have to do bootcamp?
no, officer training school only
I haven’t watched the entire video yet but I have a question. Can you go in as a new grad nurse without experience outside of doing a PRN PCT job?
yes you'll need to apply to what is called the nurse transition program
hi im at my 3rd year studying my bachelors in the Philippines. i find your videos v helpful. i have gathered a lot pf question since im transitioning from another country. Is it required for me to get my GPA before joining airforce?? i dont exactly know what to prepare. im a US citizen but grew up in the PH. im getting anxious. what are the specific requirements??
should i take my nclex before applying or is it optional?
you need to take your nclex before applying. focus on getting your cgfns so you can get your att aka application to test. Please message me on instagram so i can guide you.
What is it like for nurse with a family coming in?
the benefits for families are great. housing can be provided if needed. i've seen most family members being able to provide a better life for the most part.
Hi kuya! I graduated in the Philippines for my nursing degree. Do i have to really take my MSN in order for me to be an officer regardless of branch? TIA
Yes, per AFI. It needs to be a US degree and one from a college that has accreditation.
Did you have your CCRN before applying to Air Force?
it helps, but it's not mandatory. You will be required for when you are promoting to major.
My situation’s a bit different. I’m currently enlisted with an ADN in nursing with my RN license. Will i be able to go through the NECP or would i have to take classes on the side to get my bachelor’s?
To qualify for NECP you'll need to get your BSN. There are plenty of affordable online programs, definitely consider so you can earn your commission!
@@genesis.kts_ yeah, that's what i'm thinking too. thanks!
Hey Gen,
I want your opinion on my initial career move. I'm having trouble with getting into my public school's nursing program. I have a high GPA and did well on the TEAS, however it's just too competitive here in California. Do you think it's worth wile to go into private school and take on the debt? I pretty much have all the prerequisites for nursing school so it I will only be there for 2 years. However, the tuition is still close to six figures. Or should I keep applying to other public schools which is much cheaper, but might prolong my nursing journey. What would you do if you were in my shoes?
Thanks,
-Andrei
I would look into other possible venues. As a nurse informaticist, you have other routes to which you can take. Look into accelerated AD nursing programs, i know you are in california, but also look into finding programs out of state just so you can get your degree. I had a friend in your situation, he did the online didactic portion then had to fly out of state for clinicals. still lives in california and now has his AD, just working on his bachelors now.
Hi Andrei,
Have you consider out of state nursing school? There are nursing schools in new england providing very competitive nursing education as well.
I know people enrolled in to ADN program then get their BSN online- ADN and BSN graduates take the same NCLEX anywas. This way, you can start earning with your RN license while working on your BSN. With the nursing shortage now, more and more Universities are opening up full online with accelerated programs just to produce more RNs. I think this is not a bad route as AF required at least 1 year of nursing experience. You can gain this one year experience while working on your online ADN to BSN. This is just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.
@Ryan Tham Thank you for your input!
I actually finally got accepted to a state school here at California. Although it's 2.5 years, I'll still take it. Your recommendation was a close 2nd if I hadn't got accepted.
Thanks.
@@andreivincecruz6006 congrats!!!!! All the best to you!!!!
Hey Gen , i want to ask about when to apply to commission as a flight nurse . I was told to commission as a flight nurse i would need 2 years of nursing experience and that the whole applying process takes approximately 1 year . My question is can i apply at my 1 year mark of experience and apply since the process takes at 1 year or do i need to have 2 years upfront then i can apply . I hope it make sense , Thank you !
So, how it works is when you apply to go into the air force as a commissioned officer, you will need to build your package. The process can take a year, but if you are on top of your documents and talking to your recruiter you can get it done faster. I did mines in 10 months, from point of first contact to leaving for OTS. I would suggest 1 year and 6 months to play safe. This is because by the time your package is ready to be viewed by the boards you would have a total of 2 years. just be sure to be vigilant about speaking with a recruiter and creating a mutual relationship in the understanding that you are willing to work to get your package ready for boards.
@@genesis.kts_ awesome man , i appreciate it . i cant wait to be a flight nurse
@@genesis.kts_ Hi Gen,
First of all, thank you so much for creating the content! I appreciate all your videos.
I have fulfilled the Flight nurse education and work experience requirement but I could not join AF as a commissioned because of the citizenship - I could be enlisted. the only job that is closest to a nurse is the medic. Do you think it will be a good idea to be enlisted first then apply for commissioned officer once i get my citizenship?
Thanks.
@@ryantham2313 yes i know some people who have done it that way!

yes
Hey I recently started to watch your videos. You are such an inspiration. Glad you are in a happy place with your career. Always looking forward to your post. Please could you send your recruiter contact?
I'm happy to have that affect on you. Yes, please email me at genesisantos@gmail.com. I don't want to put information on here.
I am currently enlisted and I have been exploring the Nursing opportunity but I am not to sure whether you have to be a RN, MSN, BSN, NP or which one?
Would you please help me answer this question?
Yo. Yeah I'm an MSN-NI, RN, CCRN.
Hey, so I did 5 years Navy, will be a RN in one year and I want to get bachelors before I apply for officer. My question is it beneficial to get a masters before or after joining? I do plan on joining reserve also. I was thinking about masters in a specialty or and management degree.
And also due to my location I will be joining airforce reserve instead of Navy
@@Quietgains better to get one before joining. it will go as a credit toward your time in grade. also, there's a big difference between pays with 2nd LT 1st LT and Capt.
@@genesis.kts_ as far as the masters degree, if I choose a specialty that's not needed in the area ill be in, how will that affect me?
Definitely looking forward to the Q&A video!
@@Quietgains the masters degree doesn't matter the specialty, but will matter when you do your official duties. I did informatics but my duties involve corner information systems. ruclips.net/video/vhH9-bicACk/видео.html
I need to have bachelor correct? Because i have associate in nursing as of now
yes ma'am BSN. However, if you can bridge it to masters. It'll look better for your career down the line.
@@genesis.kts_ my school is offering rn to MSN, if having a MSN will be better should i do the rn to msn now than getting a bachelor first?
@@ladygadventures4144 get MSN. it'll be a step higher than bsn.
Do you still have to work as a bedside nurse in the air force after getting an informatics degree? What about on deployments?
Yes and no. Main job is bedside. You also get admin responsibilities which mines is informatics with anything systems related. During deployment it depends on your utc and what mission you are doing.
@@genesis.kts_ thank you. What is the acuity like in the ICU in the military versus civilian world? I’ve been an ICU nurse for 7 years and I’m not that excited about it anymore and would rather move to a different specialty. Would the military consider me changing specialties or would they most likely just put me in a critical care role? I more so want to get away from bedside as much as possible. Also, can you start taking leadership type classes right when you commission or do you have to wait for a time period before doing so?
@@brittanyhanna8514 you're like me. I did 9 years of civilian then went into the air force because I didn't care about bedside. I knew j was gonna go into the air force. Here's my thoughts. It's different. A good different because half the time the acuity is easy lol. Granted on a bad day your 1 patient is on multiple pressors, but that doesn't even compare the down time you get to do admin and the time away from bedside to do training. Like for example this January I will be at training for a month. Then around March April will be slated for ccatt. I get about 2 admin days every two weeks and I get to focus on jobs that advance my admin skills. This is what will advance you in the civilian world if you leave the air force because you have leadership skills. Leadership will be focused at OTS (watch my ots series) absolutely no bedside for 9 weeks and school. You get paid to do that and develop your leadership skills. I don't miss civilian nursing nor plan on going back to it. I love what I'm doing now and where I'm going with my experience
@@genesis.kts_ thank you for your helpful comments and videos. Good luck on your journey!!
@@brittanyhanna8514 my experience doesn't reflect others, however if you're willing to try something new and grow with it, you will enjoy it. Reach out if you ever need help.
