It's about self-talk and self-belief. If you frame yourself in your mind as someone who's capable of doing stuff even when you don't feel like it, you'll become that person.
Negative thinking drains you. Thinking, speaking, writing (even jokingly) about yourself negatively reinforces an image that weakens you. You do it 20 times across a span of a year and that image becomes a part of you, whether you're consciously aware of it or not.
Luckily, the opposite seems to be true as well. Consistently talking to yourself In a positive, empowering and constructive way quickly leads to developing a much better mindset, which then makes it much easier to do stuff you want, or have to do. Every negative thought can be replaced by positive, constructive one. Even if you aren't that person, even if you don't believe you can be, talk to yourself as if you are. Do that for a month and see how much you change.
People like Jocko wholeheartedly believe that they're capable of doing whatever they set their minds on. He knew he would lead men into battle before he even enrolled. Then he did all those things, which further reinforced that image. He believes he's the kind of person that works out even if he doesn't feel like it, so why wouldn't he?
Try it if you haven't and/or you're struggling to become disciplined, even though you might 'know" what to do. If you're someone who's trying to better yourself, yet your self-talk is negative/mostly critical, know that you're trying to implement a change that goes DIRECTLY against your self image. Unless you change that, making any changes will be much difficult than they have to be with a much lesser chance of sticking with them. Be consistent.

I was this guy at 355lbs 2.5 years ago, severe sleep apnea, my sleep doc said I was a 'good candidate for bariatric surgery'. That was rock bottom. First I quit drinking alcohol, that taught me how to change and I learned what discipline was. Then I focused on weight loss, and used the most available exercise to help me: walking. I walked consistently. Consistency was my biggest weapon. Lost 90 pounds, no more CPAP, no more SSRIs, no more depression, no more hypertension, BP is solid now. Consistency in the application of your own solution was key for me.

It’s all discipline, not emotional or motivational. Setup a routine. Forget about weight loss or scale numbers, here is what you do. Eat healthy. Do research on what is healthy. Up your protein intake, lower the carb intake. Try and eat fresh ingredients, not boxed and packaged food. Get moving. Walk around the block. Go for a bike ride, whatever you want to do. Try and break a sweat every single day. Once walking around the block or whatever feels easier then start doing more, and more. It will work. Weight will come off, but more Important you will start feeling better and being healthy. Make it a priority.

Man he's right. I lost about 40 pounds by starting a daily gym routine and I told myself even if I didn't want to work out I was gonna go walk there anyways and at least take a shower and be there everyday. Very quickly I was giving myself longer and longer in the gym and enjoying the routine. It's tough to tell how sick you are when you're gaining weight but when you start losing you feel so much better its like aging in reverse

  • @firstnamelastname5612
    @firstnamelastname5612 Год назад +8

I've been clinically obese twice in my life. As a kid and as a young adult, it's just about consistency. Not only to stay on track but also to not overtrain too early and then get a painful injury that incapacitate you from excersising. The slower you lose weight, the longer you keep it off. You don't have to starve OR train like an animal. 15 mins of excersise a WEEK either spread out or done on one day WILL jump-start your body into starting producing energy for working out.
I literally never wake up wanting to work out, unless it's squatting or bench pressing, and even then I get almost nervous before a work out, even though I train at home on my own! But I love food, I stopped binge eating at night by having a bigger dinner later in the day, I started missing breakfast because I never really feel hungry if I miss it.
The biggest thing is making the decision of "I am going to get fit, I'm going to get healthy and I don't care if it takes 2 years. I'll have cheat days and maybe more rest days than I need, but if I stay on track I'll see the results" don't make yourself miserable to lose the weight.

*I was 440lbs, now 340lbs, cutting to 270lbs.* My advice is to see food as SURVIVAL not pleasure. I grew up on an animal based diet (meat, fish, eggs, raw milk, and berries in season). I became addicted to processed crap when I moved to the city. So now I’m just going back to animal based. I’ll have junk food here and there. But on those days, I fast the entire day. I’ll have 2-3k calories of junk within an hour and then NOTHING for the rest of the day. Just fasting with lemon juice in sparkling mineral water.

I like food too much to see it as a means to an end. I both understand the nutrition and the pleasure side of it, so it's hard to just put the exact food down on the plate that I need and then not eat anything else. Good thing it's not easy for me to gain weight at 6'2" 170 lbs. I could carelessly eat like 200 g carbs, 80 g protein, and 100 g fat (however many calories that could be, 2800-3000) and the effect would only last a day lol. I try to only eat twice a day, and a lot of the time, I do a 16:8 IF method, so I'm not eating and spiking my horomones and blood sugar all the time. To consistently gain weight, I would have to eat 3x a day, effectively getting rid of any recovery time for my gut and extra fasting hours I put in throughout the day. I could try maxing out what I could eat twice a day lol.

Hell yes! I started at 465lbs., 2 years ago. Severe sleep apnea, hypothyroidism, depression...keep adding the reasons it was hard to lose and easy to put on. Point is, I read Extreme Ownership and started living my life in a completely different way. I'm 320lbs now and I've been in Judo for 9 months now (competed once). If you'd have told me 2 years ago that I'd be in any kind of martial art, competing, and improving in it...I probably would have been willing to bet you all the money and possessions that I had that you were out of your mind.
If the guy that called in reads this, take it from me, someone who thought they had reached a point of no return: you CAN do it. It will suck. It will hurt. You will want to quit. But you can't. You won't...because you know that the only way to get better is to endure and dig deep. Then, you realize that you're stronger than the voice in your head, telling you to stop and you start seeing the results. All of a sudden, you're addicted to the struggle of getting better and beyond happy with how you feel and look. Do it man. You are the only one who can change you, and you have that power, even if you don't think you do.

The concept of *me regulating my own emotions* was crazy to me, but it turns out we can regulate our own emotions, we can talk ourselves thru the emotion, and emotions are so often keenly felt, so any emotion that is hustling you to do something other than what you've already decided in a calm, rational moment is a big thing. Practice talking yourself out of a reactive moment that makes you act quickly towards your own hurt - like eating a junk meal or not stepping out for that walk. What would you tell a friend you loved with all your heart in that moment? Start telling yourself those things, out loud, where you can hear it, where your brain has to process it thru it's neural pathways to comprehend it. Sometimes we have to be the person we never had that really loves us and wants the best for us. Generally, if you are that big, then you weren't getting that message earlier in your life, but as an adult you can practice (on purpose) being a good and true friend to yourself.

I was 14 and 350 pounds before I realized I seriously needed to lose weight, I just had a day where I looked in the mirror and decided that was it and went for a bike ride immediately, I then started riding everyday once for 15 minutes working up to rising for hours at a time. And with change in diet as well( not snacking on processed crap) eat a apple. That did take months but I got there. The bicycle is what did it for me. Even now I'm down to 230 and now my abs are showing and I'm gaining muscle mass like crazy so it possible. It's one of those mind of matter situations. Just do it. Like nike says. You can do it.

Granted I wasn’t nearly 440 lbs, just skinny fat and unhappy, but a lifestyle change is possible and even when you get to where you think you want to be, then you want more and you still continue to struggle. I just lost 8kgs (18 pounds) in 3 months... and it was super hard... exercised 5 -6 days a week. My next goal is another 8 kilos in 3 months from now and focusing more on calorie intake... to hopefully speed things up. If I succeed ill still have one more 8kg/3month spell to go before i reach my main target in 6 months from now (9 months in total)... and then I'll reassess my self. So far, I can't stress enough, make *realistic* goals and use motivation like goggins or whatever to keep u pumped. Whatever works for you. Some weeks you're just not gonna see much change and others you will. Also MAKE time for it. Health is more important than career. Whenever you cave in with bad foods/eat a crap load... make sure you double down on the exercise the next day as a punishment. That's the only thing that's worked for me so far... otherwise I feel I've failed and fall back into bad habits.

The problem isn’t motivation or willpower. It’s not being able to visualize or understand the result. That’s why people give up, they need a mentor or faith in the results. Without that you won’t improve.
