Implementing Democracy into a fractured culture like Iraq/ Afghanistan/ Syria etc. cannot exist as it is today. As you said entering was a mistake simply because the end "goal" was unattainable; leaving was an even greater mistake because we never succeeded in establishing a seed of Democracy. We tried to play the good guy, the liberator, but were unwilling to foot the bill. If nothing else the US military and government performed one of the greatest cultural/ social experiments in human history and found the results wanting.

The idea of starting wars and thinking that democracy will follow after, is holy a self righteous one. If democracy and peace are to come to a region, it has to come about natively and naturally.
