It was hilarious to hear Peter "Chicken King" von Gomm in the voiceover. That Miyazaki Jidori grilled chicken looks amazing. And I never would have paired tartar sauce with chicken. I'll have to try nanban one day.
NHK < This channel. i only watch NHK news for the sake of the newscasters, not so much for the content. Crazy cute newscasters is the only thing what makes NHK better. But i rather contents like such over NHK anyday.
10:13 the moment where you have tasted something so delicious, that you lean back in sheer satisfaction as expectations were exceeded beyond imagination.
Thank you so much for another great video everything looked so good. I have to put this on my list to try. Nice to see the family at the end. Thank you again aloha
I love chicken namban, had it several times on my trip last year. It was glorious! Also loved pvg’s voiceover of the rooster. More voice overs!!! Also, can you do an episode on gyukatsu. It was a revelation for us!
PVG rules the roost! 😂😂 Great episode, and I'm so happy I happened to be eating fried chicken while I watched it, otherwise I would've been really jealous! I personally love tartar sauce, so this sounds like it's made for me! Love the main channel content, keep it comin'!
John, you are such a great filmmaker. I just love it when I see new uploads on this channel. can't wait to see more of Japan this year since the weather has become really nice.
Thank you for the English version of the gourmet report. I also went to eat chicken nanban at Aji no Ogura, the birthplace of chicken nanban.I remember it being very delicious.
Another excellent series ! Got to say you make me a convert to chicken namban! Still can remember those live streams in miyazaki where you film this video, and the story of how you used a bank's wifi to work !!
Lol PVG the king of the Chicken coups...why do i hear peters voice but in chicken run the movie style "we gonna fly out of here" 🐔Great Documentary John now i want chicken with japanese tartar sauce🙄🤤😋🍗
Your look of great contentment when eating those dishes said it all John 😋 it looked delicious, thank you for another great video, keep up the excellent work
There is a risk with ALL food but it is raw chicken and one must consider it. With that said, they wouldn’t serve it just as a dare, it’s their culture and it’s considered safe and in the menu, but as a non-local, I’d consider not eating it. Quite frankly, it’s very hard to recommend because place to place, the quality is different and other than THIS restaurant, I cannot say it’s safe. The taste: it’s fresh, good, interesting texture but not in my top 100 dishes 😂
I'm late to the show having been on the road these past two weeks but this was certainly worth the wait. Thanks for sharing where we can find chicken nanban in Tokyo. In March visited Miyazaki for the first time and as luck would have it our set lunch had a side dish of chicken nanban with the tasty tarter sauce. It was as you have advertised. Nice little bonus getting to hear PVG's audio talent included. I see a new Manga character in the making.
I love when PVG is part of the episode. Also very good video John!! We didn’t eat chicken nanban but now we will when we visit next time! I like the chicken breast option. I know it’s not popular opinion but I prefer chicken breast flavor over chicken thighs
Hey John, Great vid! It had my mouth watering in to time! LOL! I was wondering if you had any recommendations as to where the best chicken nanban restaurant in Tokyo. Especially in the Shinjuku area. I can't seem to find a good place to get that dish oh Oahu. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Keep up the good work!
Omg. So surprised to see you feature the last restaurant. We were just there a few weeks ago. We went on the recommendation of our airbnb host near kirishima, and it is seriously in the middle of the forest. We went there at past 6 (almost closing time) and it was a bit scary since no street lights were there and we had to cross the highway since parking was across the street. But seriously, my family and i had the best chicken in my life in this place. Raw chicken was a bit scary but i trusted them. But cooked is superior since the fat renders out, and the way the taste stays in your mouth because of it... Heaven. Prices seem high at first considering how remote this place is, but you will be shocked at the serving size. The donburi is easily 2x the size of the usual one. So that, and the superior taste more than makes up for it.
The price is easy to justify, every time I go here, I want to come back and the cost of the meal is a fraction of that. I think it may be high for locals but THIS should be a special occasion to eat chicken so perfect. After talking with the owner for a while, I know his love for the raising of the chickens, the process and the sacrifice, and they care translates into an exceptional meal. By the way, the water there is perhaps the best in Japan! Kobayashi is famous for it and you can get I think 5 liters for ¥100 at a fill up booth at the restaurant, just across from the parking lot in the restaurant side - and locals line up for it! I took 4 liters home, JetStar isn’t great for taking home any weight. I did weight a good few KG after this but they didn’t dare charge me for that 😂 this restaurant is a MUST for anyone going to Kyushu.
@@onlyinjapan thanks for elaborating. I wish i had time to chat with the staff, but we were conscious that we were the last/only guests there. Surely a place we would love to visit again when we go back to kyushu. The whole island is full of surprises like this Ps. They also have English menu here, which i did not expect when i was heading some place so remote. Alas, like every other place in Miyazaki we visited, cash only.
It does, but WAY better, no HFCS - it’s snappy, soft and creamy - so perfect. Every restaurant, this is the one thing that was most different and always home made 🤩
is there a way to get a recipe for the tartar sauce and the breading? I would love to try and make this at home. Because I won't be able to visit Japan any time soon, sadly
Another great video John. It would be interesting to see Japanese egg production and why Japanese chicken eggs are better than eggs produced in western countries. Have you tried to approach any egg farms to make a video on the subject?
I did but right after I filmed this, there was a bout of avian flu and Japan culled millions of chickens :( egg prices are through the roof right now. I’ll try to make that as soon as things settle down. It’s on my list.
Hey, John is caged hens still a thing in Japan? If it is, is there anyways a consumer can know where the Chicken meat and eggs came from? Like is there a certification such as "Organic" or by an institution like SPCA here in New Zealand or a government seal?
I could not do chicken sashimi.. but I will eat everything else! I've never had chicken nanban. Can someone tell me how to make the tartar sauce for it?
It's too funny to see it written out チキン南蛮 which literally means Southern Barbarian Chicken, referring mostly to the Portuguese and Spanish who were the earliest European travelers to Asia. China used the same derogitory term.
this dish looks amazing is just a little bit to far from where tourists are. Is there any comparable places in any of the mayor cities with this dish that you recommend?
For eating, it’s an amazing place! Not great train access but ideal for renting a car, very little traffic, lots of open space with palm tree 🌴 and beaches which I love 🤩 🌅
@@onlyinjapan Thanks John, i visited Kyushu in 2018, had a road trip down saga, nagasaki , kumamoto and kagoshima. I sacrifice the east coast becos beppu and miyazaki were really quite out of the way . Your coverage on nanban chicken really got me interested again, would be a good road trip from fukuoka to drop by onsen town beppu and drive down for some nanban chicken. Glee😁 Kyushu is my favourite region to travel, the people are warm, friendly(geniune) and less cold. I can practice my japanese loads too when i am there without being stare down like i am causing them 迷惑.
There are - but the dish originated here and I think the quality of the chicken and eggs are superior, but yes - you can get Chicken Nanban all over the country these days. Kochi prefecture has their own take, slightly different recipe but still VERY VERY GOOD! Shinjuku has a Miyazaki prefecture store where they also cook it.
Only the Miyazaki store in Shinjuku, south exit, western terrace - but there are loads of places that make it! Many Izakaya have it on the menu too. Denny’s once had it as well 😂 Have to ask around. It won’t be the same quality, next with thigh meat, Momo.
@@onlyinjapan Thank you! Ill def check out the Miyazki store when I visit at the end of the year. Maybe I'll try to convince my travel buds to take trip down south for life changing chicken haha
Greetings John, great coverage however, I am a vegetarian. I would to see some vegan or vegetarian content when you have time as all aren’t meat eaters on this channel. Thanks for sharing.
I once did an episode on Tofu, I’m sure I’ll do one on some things that are vegan 🌱 but take a look at the Yuzu Kosho episode I made. That condiment is vegan friendly and amazing for all dishes.
Mr John.. when the time comes for you to retire from the life your doing now and you come to think what you want to do to have fun and enjoy your retirement... look back to this... open a food tour office.. foodies spend good money .. the companionship and the experience that they experience always brings more customers.. and I think that you made more than enough connections in the food industry per precinct to be qualified for a good quality tour...
That’s a wonderful idea! I think it people become more interested in their food, this idea would be really big! Farm tourism with eating at a restaurant that’s sources it!
It was hilarious to hear Peter "Chicken King" von Gomm in the voiceover. That Miyazaki Jidori grilled chicken looks amazing. And I never would have paired tartar sauce with chicken. I'll have to try nanban one day.
