Lovely shots. I don't own any of these systems but judging from these pictures the Nikon one just feels more pleasant, but only because they are presented side by side.
Is there a reason why your WB is so cool in the screen recording and also somewhat in the unedited raw? Is it just a matter of 'I will jsut fix that in post' or is there a reasoning behind it?
Guessing it's probably auto white balancing over the entire frame and since most of it is in shadow the white balance is coming out very cold. Probably just photography brain not remembering to adjust it to be 'correct' for video since it's a non issue shooting raw stills.
I didn't see much difference only sometimes the bokeh on the 1.2 a little smoother, but that is minimal for the lighting conditions. Beautiful photos as always, and I would also like to see some portraits of you “you have the look too 👀”🤷♂️
Great video. At this level of premium lens and low aperture, the only question is what is best for you Both of these cameras and lens are excellent. You asked about size which is a good thing to ask. One thing that could have also helped to determine which one is for you is the price. Those 1.2 lens are usually very expensive
The reason the bokeh looks that much smoother on the Nikon on comparison at 3.03 is that you are considerably closer to the model (which makes background smoother) and to the flowers in the background (which makes the flowers much smoother)
Hey Julia!! Great video!! I was wondering, what kind of camera strap do you use? I didn't see it in your description. Thanks againnnn! Beautiful photos!
I would be interested you to compare the Bokeh of "old" GM and the newer one. Lots of reviews show that the "Old" GM has a bigger and "dream-look" bokeh. Perhaps keeping the old one is the best option.
Hello greetings from México!!!! I love your videos!!!! ONE question.... as you do not use FLASH..... why don´t you use the electronic shutter on both cameras???? you can save some clicks there don´t you??? Thanks for sharing!!!! 🙏🙏🙏
There is too much difference in size and weight between lenses. The difference in the picture is felt in the full-length portrait, but for me personally this is not enough. By the way, there is a significant difference between the Z8 and A7 IV - the Z8 sensor is noticeably better, which adds points to it in some aspects.
It's only one third of a stop difference between 1.4 and 1.2, so it only shows when comparing side to side. The difference in lens bulk, heft and price are much more noticeable. For those who are ok with that, i assume SONY will release a 1.2 version as well, like they did with 50mm.
@JuliaTrotti I completely agree with you. I liked the look of the 1.2 better than that of the 1.4 when both were wide open. My back would certainly prefer the 1.4, but I still wish that Sony would release a 1.2... What is that camera holster that you are using? Is it comfortable to carry two cameras on it all day? Is it still comfortable with just one camera on it?
@@michaelcliffordphotos it’s not enough space to allow light to hit the edges of the sensor on a super fast telephoto. Nikon had a 44mm F-Mount since 1959, and could never make an effective 1.2 lens beyond the 58mm focal length. Canon had a 54mm EF mount that debuted in the 80s and they came with their first 85 1.2 in the 80s. It took Nikon over 3 decades to match Canon at 85, and it was when they abandoned the 44mm mount and moved to a 55mm mount.
@@hikertrashfilmsnot true. Nikons F mount limitation was due to mount size AND flange distance. Sony’s short flange distance makes their mount size less of an issue. They can certainly make a 85 1.2. In fact there is already one for e mount made by mitakon

Great comparison and I'm a bit shocked with the difference between 1.2 and 1.4 lol. I was wondering, have you noticed that the Sony 85 f1.4 gmii seems slightly zoomed out compared to other 85s? I just picked up the Sony as my first 85, so I have no real frame of reference (other than having the 70-200gmii that I can simulate an 85 with). So nice! You remember me using the canon 85 1.2? The depth of field it's siiii minimal. So I have swap for a sigma 105mm 1.4 even bigger and heavier for this close ups and less dof. heheh obsessed great vid as always
Could it be that the Nikkor 85mm F1.2 is a bit longer in focal range, as the Sony? As it is just 1/2 of a stop difference this would answer, why the bokeh seems to be that much bigger. The comparison at F2, the Sony bokeh is round, with the Nikkors bokeh you can see the blades and it has some color fringing around the bokeh balls.
Thank you for the great comparison. I also compared an adapted Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN e-mount lens with the Nikon 85mm f1.2 S on my Z8 and can confirm that it also beats the Sigma when it comes to optical quality. However the Sigma is of course much smaller and lighter.
Honestly haven’t been the biggest fan of the GMii bokeh. It’s super sharp, optically clean and blazing fast af, and a nice size and weight but bokeh is a let down compared to original GM and even the sigma 85. In this comparison the 85 1.2 really shines, even with both at F2 the 1.2 lens looked better having softer bokeh and more circular to edge. I’d bet Sony will make a 85 1.2

plz help me I bought a Sony A7III and am looking for a lens to shoot bridal, wedding and portrait sessions so that they create stunning images with a special character that competes with other photographers. By and large I do not think most people can actually tell the difference between lenses which are above a certain quality, all of the lenses you mentioned meet that standard. For portraits what people notice more is the depth of field, and that's the advantage of having one of those primes. Beyond that, stunning photos happen in your skill with the camera and editing. I'd worry more about getting something you're comfortable with. People get the zooms because they do not want to switch lenses which is a huge advantage in a wedding situation, and the lens with the most versatility would be the tamron or samyang (which is cheaper) 35-150. If this is specific to portrait sessions where you have basically full control over lighting and composition, of this list I'd go with the 85 sigma because its going to have the thinnest depth of field. If you really want to buy the lens with the highest optical performance, a lens I never used but based off what I've seen online, I'd go with the sony 50 1.2.
Those differences will never be noticed by the client, its really for our satisfaction, which is fine. Shame Nikon released a 1.4 range that might not be pro as I hate the weight of the 1.2's.
The Nikon is an impressive lens, despite being the size of a human skull and literally twice as heavy and $800 more. The results look so close, but since the difference is very subtle, I prefer the lighter, smaller Sony. Of course, none of this matters if you don’t shoot the mount of the lens you prefer. I’m glad Sony went with f1.4 on this update because it kept the size manageable, but I suspect an f1.2 version may be coming for those that don’t mind all the extra weight.

At the end of the video, where you talk about "bigger/bulkier/heavier" lenses -- I want to point out something that really only gets mentioned sporadically (if at all), the MOUNT SIZE (& function). Nikon Z has the largest mount compared to Sony/Canon/Fuji etc. I guess on the "con" side, this makes Nikon make larger/bulkier/heavier lenses bc the mount lends itself to it. But it has a whole bunch of "pros" that don't get enough attention/mentions/love: the big one being it DOESN'T "bend light" as much, if it all, due to the larger mount & it sitting closer to the sensor. This also allows more light to get to the sensor too, even when shooting higher apertures. As things have shifted to Mirrorless, one of the big complaints has been about "Nikon Z bodies/lenses 'being heavy/bulky'" -- particularly, Sony shooters lol NO HATE, just an observation -- but there is a reason for it & design/functionality involved. Nikon is innovating & pushing gear to the next level, I just don't think it gets talked about in a way that gets as much hype as new Eye-AF tech or something 😅 which is a shame.

These were so pretty very dreamy. This is why I love the 85!! I was really surprised how both raw images looked so similar! I was watching on an uncalibrated monitor though. Do the files look almost identical to you Julia? How do skin tones compare? The model is absolutely stunning!!!
There's very little difference between f/1.4 and f/1.2 for bokeh. The DIFFERENCE is the size of the front element, and the Nikon is 5mm larger ... so it will always produce much better results. The same reason a 200mm f/2 will ALWAYS produce better results than a 70-200 f/2.8 even at the same aperture.
Looking at Comparison 3 Unedited 100% crop, I feel that f/1.2 is too much in that case as important parts of her face become blurry. We can also clearly see the Sony's higher level of fine detail resolution in that set of photos - but in the other photos, it's not as obvious. I can see the allure of the larger daytime bokeh balls at f/1.2, but I'm feeling like maybe it's too much - it almost becomes difficult to tell what those huge blotches of light are in the photo (they're a bit distracting to my eye compared to the f/1.4). I would be interested to see night time bokeh balls as well - something tells me that Nikon would have the cat's eyes at f/1.2. But the truth is that I shoot on Canon, with a wandering interest in Sony and Fuji, so actually I'm not really interested in the Nikon at all, but more in the new Sony 85 f/1.4 II and how it compares to the Canon 85 1.2 and 85 1.2 DS. :)
Never happening. They couldn't even follow the industry trend and make an 85 1.2. Then it also turns into whether they want to make a high end manual focus lens because no .95 lens in existence has auto focus.
omg the nikon lens is like holding a rocket launcher lol. i feel like the nikon is more of a luxury lens cause i bet its super expensive. and to your point, i cant imagine carrying that around for long events like weddings.
There is a tad bit of more bokeh with the Nikon but its nothing big to do crazy over. You really have to look at the bokeh to even notice it when the background is far away. When the background is close you can notice it more.
@@bigrobotnewstoday1436 that’s not the only difference . The types of lens coatings , how much ghosting do you get in heavy backlit situations which in this video the Nikon did better . Better in the flaring too .

This video should answer your questions about canon 1.2 since it’s very similar. GMii has a lot of cats eye, more than the 1.2 lens in this video.
love this!
Wear the hood, reduce the flare
Don’t you like to use artificial lights?
Seems like some photos leave something to be desired w.r.t. lighting
Let's wait for the Sony 85 f0.95 GM 😤😤
I think Sony's product strategy is to offer smaller lenses and cameras, so we probably won't see an 85mm f0.95 from Sony anytime soon.
Will never happen the mount is too small @@stefan_becker
@airjaff that's proven wrong many times. It can go to f/0.67 if they want. But that'd be pointless.
@@airjaff Funny cos Nikon F mount was even smaller. So is Leica M mount. That's an extremely old myth that came about from bias. Not fact.
Never happening. They couldn't even follow the industry trend and make an 85 1.2. Then it also turns into whether they want to make a high end manual focus lens because no .95 lens in existence has auto focus.
Wow Nikon z8❤
The weight difference between both setups is probably pretty noticeable lol :)
❤❤
Love you Julia ❤
omg the nikon lens is like holding a rocket launcher lol. i feel like the nikon is more of a luxury lens cause i bet its super expensive. and to your point, i cant imagine carrying that around for long events like weddings.
The Canon 85mm 1.2 L is even sharper
Nope, I have both
I am Bangladeshi , when need information for camera i come your Channel to see your review ☺️
@@michaelmalodrums9674 True.
Let's not forget the price difference. The Sony GM II is about $1000 USD less for a slight difference in bokeh
These are tools for professional and photographers. $1000 is nothing in grand scheme of things.
The Nikon 85mm never leaves my Z9… of course if you have noodle arms pick the Sony.
