- In this latest adventure of Wisconsin Fisherman, I headed out to set some traps for spring leeches, prepping for the upcoming fishing season. I admit, I had my doubts about the timing, but it turned out to be just right. The traps were overflowing with leeches, giving us a whopping catch of about 650! It's always fascinating to witness nature's surprises. I hope you enjoyed tagging along. I trapped hundreds of pounds of leeches for multiple bait shops on the iron range in Minnesota back in the mid 70s until about 82. I've used those folded print plates, flashing, coffee cans and burlap traps. They all worked great 👍. I sold them for 50¢ a dozen and $18.00 a pound. I did really well. 😊
Nice! What was your best results for traps and bait?
That was an impressive haul of leaches! I appreciate seeing the processing after they are trapped.
I am in Central New York. We used to tie a rope on a muskrat carcass throw it in the pond. We would have three or four of them come back in the morning they would be loaded. We used to turn our trapping rubber glove inside out kind of glove that goes up to the shoulder we would fill half the glove with leeches. This was back in the 1960s, thanks for the video
Great information! Here in southwest Wisconsin we dig for crawlers, but whener I go up north fishing I notice every bait shop carries leeches. Thanks for the video.
What makes a good leech pond? What characteristics do you need to look for?
That's what I want to know.
I’m working on figuring it out. I’ve trapped a few different locations this season and have seen different results
From what I've read, if it has snails and no fish it should be good
Great video brother! 🙌
You need a rubber kitchen spatula to get those little critters out. It might keep your fingers from getting frozen.
Awesome, wish i had a leech pond close by.
Great insights! Thanks again!
Glad you enjoyed it. Always cool knowing you're watching!
You mean your local master/politician doesn't ask you to pay them for catching your own bait from the land/water/property they claim they own ? Thats amazing ! Recreational fishing is a God given right not a privilege, the licenses are are nothing more than a fee on our rights.
Love the leech videos!!
More coming too!
Do you try to feed the smaller ones to get bigger
I love these leech videos i was wondering how long do they survive in your fridge and do you put clean water to then everyday?Do you use a container with a cover with hole to?
Months change water every couple days. Just a bucket half way with water
ove been liking these leech videos.
I've learned that come out early from your video.
I wonder, maybe next winter, why don't you try to capture them under the ice?? different months
Thanks! Right I wonder I’m sure they are
@Wisconsin_Fisherman never know hey!
Can’t do that in Florida, gators
Sweeeet
are those Ribbon leeches or mud leeches? Ribbon is what you buy in the store. they look like Ribbon
Yes Ribbon
Since you're guiding and making videos all the time, maybe it's time to invest in a bait tank for minnows and leeches in your garage! Tell your wife it's a business investment 🤣Cool video and technique.
Do you run your own bait store?
No just guide so much I need that much bait
What do you do with them? Other than fishing. Like how do you keep em alive?
In a bucket in a cold spot
@@Wisconsin_Fisherman how long can you keep them alive in optimal conditions?
