    Back in the day you would crimp the top of a coffee can together with fish entrails inside weighted down with a few stones. The leeches you want are the flesh eaters and not blood suckers. After bringing the can up you would let it sit awhile and the blood suckers would climb out and the ones you want would stay in the water.
    When we hook the leeches, we let the leech try to attach to our thumbnail to make it easier to get a good hook set.

    I was freaked out about leeches when I was younger swimming in campground ponds. Haunted me ever since, fell on Tom Boley's channel and had to try spinner and float with leeches. Finally became confident touching them just his year. I was such a pssy used pliers, scissors, and a hooks without touching them lol. After the time wasted trying to get them on, I said fk it, stuck my hand in and, wow, saved me a bunch of time lol, harmless little buggers. They stick on and squirm around, pretty harmless if you're touching them to use for fishin. Gotta try trapping for them and save some $$$. Thanks for sharing!

    • @yanphuc
      @yanphuc 2 года назад

      @@woodsandwater123 For us here in canada very few are trapped in canada and are instead mostly imported from the usa.
      We don't have many natural ponds.
      We mostly have lakes or deep ponds that holds fish.
      The only few good leech ponds are well kept secrets and the only commercial scale trapping is done in states/provinces where they have bans on leeches and bait coming from out of states like ontario for example. I heard that Saskatchewan had very good leech populations but I have yet to hear anyone actually moving them from there.
      I have actually never been able to actually trap any ribbon leeches but thats probably because I've only trapped in ponds connected to our massive river here in montreal quebec.
      Contrary to popular beliefs, I actually do like to use mud/horse leeches for walleyes and I wish I could buy them here in canada because I havent caught any this year compared to last year.
      These jokers are as tough as rubber and I can easily catch like 5 walleyes on a single one whereas I'm lucky if a ribbon is anywhere to be found after reeling in a walleye and even so its always mangled.
      Horses do need some pretty special care if you want them to be effective and swim like a ribbon instead of just being a glob of snot.
      Also, always make sure that you sort your leeches when keeping them in bulk because mud leeches foul the water very very fast with their slime and also like to suck the blood off of the ribbons which is a reason why some are just randomly found dead in the tubs.
      With my reduced mobility the only water access I have that I can trap holds a lot of fish and a little bit of horses and tiger leeches.

    A gunny sack works better and easier. And you don’t have to get out before daylight because they stay in the gunny sack.

  • @patindvik3408
    @patindvik3408 2 года назад

    Chicken livers break down too fast. If you can get your hands on beef kidney it works really well and it holds together better keep them in the trap longer. Also you want to be there as close to daybreak as you can. If you buy the heavy milled black plastic at Home Depot or someplace like that use a vacuum sealer to make a pouch and on the bottom of the pouch make about a 1 inch pouch where you can put some rocks in it and seal them so it sinks. Make it big enough that you can get your hand inside to clean it out but it doesn't have to be much bigger. Take a paper hole punch and punch some holes in it so water will drain out. We use chalk line to attach to it. And just Styrofoam pieces as a float. But we do all of our checking out of kayaks or canoes. We usually sat from 2 foot to no more than 4 foot of water. Best of luck man
