I like the "resting nice face" aspect of natural essence! I also always felt that natural essence gets a bad rap. To me, if ethereal is a lily and romantic is a rose, natural is a wheat field. Like that beautiful, Gladiator wheat field of the afterlife. It's absolutely gorgeous. It's warm and inviting and you just want to be there.

From what I see of it natural essence has body awareness, mental fluidity rather than being a sports person or the great tunic bare legs and boots, of years ago, even if legs are still great not the go with white hair. which is hard at 70 or 80. This is youthful as I see it not constricted and worrying. The flannel shirt etc is not defining it. I have always a youthful quality and it’s not gamine. It has classic with symmetry and beautiful fabrics and purity of line no florals etc. Wonderful video

I don't know if it would work, but It could be super interesting to look at these essences through the lens of Goth style since today there are so many different types of Goth... trad, whimsy, grunge, emo, victorian, punk, glam... I've been playing around with my style for some time now and find the softer, grunge and whimsy goth looks work better for me as much as I would love to rock a more dramatic look I tend to drown in it. This video is making me think I've got natural essence for sure, very enlightening!

I need something like that too. I've been Goth my entire life, and it will always make up part of the fabric of my soul and my roots. But I do want to dress for my essence, too. I'm trying to dress in colours other than black these days but I still feel like in black I'm much more likely to be recognised by 'my tribe.' Though when I'm already amongst goths - at alternative music festivals, Goth meet ups, or Goth clubs, I actually love dressing in unexpected colours. Once I went to a Goth nightclub with pink hair and a white corset with a white maxi skirt. I got so many compliments.

But this Christmas at a family get together I tried dressing in my lines, and my cousin was like you look like a model! I was so pleased I feel closer and closer to understanding this stuff the more I listen and read about it. Every essence is so beautiful to me I can’t really pick a favorite and it’s why I’ve fallen in love with this type of styling because it so subjective and you look at your body for what it is and not how to “correct” it.

Hahahahaha. I am basically anti-natural. I love long flowing fabrics, but I have to be super careful, because anything too 'relaxed' (no matter the style) makes me look super sloppy. My sister and mom both have natural vibes, too, so it's what was modeled for me, growing up. It's kind of my cultural baseline, and it doesn't really work well for me unless I find some way to make it look *very* intentional. Very interesting.

It's surprising that you defined Natural "common", but in Italy it's not so the perception of ourself changes with the country. I've been analyzed Soft Natural and it's rare here, people always say to me (and my sister): "you have very wide shoulder, you're athletic, you have muscle", even though I didn't train physically more than the others... so I grow up thinking that I was a little bit different. Girls are often D and pear shape, also C and R, but N... No. I should start feeling proud of it.

And I’m so glad you put out this video. Naturals are the ultimate “cool girl” imo for chic effortless looking fashion. Girl, you’re throwing me for a loop with this. I’ve never considered natural essence for myself because I associate it with being classic, which I am not. I came here to learn more about it after sharing my photos in a typing group. (Currently narrowing down where I fit between the Romantics and Gamine or Ingenue.)
HOWEVER, your keyword of RELAXED may just have brought some things into sharp focus for me. I can see that that concept likely underpins my entire current wardrobe. Which is blowing my mind. Despite my likely being a theatrical romantic, I hate waist definition or any tightness around my stomach in almost any outfit. My favorite item in my wardrobe is actually a fleece open kerchief sweater that I literally wear every day (and have for years). So much of my taste would make more sense if I had natural being foundational beneath my other essences.

This series has had huge explanatory power for me - not to mention just being really fun information to absorb and process. I believe I am a Kibbe romantic (a fat one, incidentally), but I've never really attempted to dress Full-Romance. When I first worked out my Kibbe type, I used to say to myself that I was kind of cheating to Soft-Gamine, but that it was from some combination of cheeky taste and Romantic silhouettes just being really hard to find in stores at the time - at least in my size. But learning about the Kitchener essences has had me asking whether I have also actually instinctually been pulling back from a level of aesthetic maturity that felt overwhelming and self-serious on me.
I'm pretty sure now that my essence home base is actually Ingenue-Gamine... +Something. Figuring out the Something has been an interesting puzzle, though. I'm over forty, but youthful vibes seem really right on me - up to a point. High femme is also really right - up to a point. There's something in the mix that pushes back on and leavens the femininity and the youthfulness. Romantic made some sense, given my Kibbe type and that I have quite pillowy (one could say lush) facial features. But for context: I am a bit of an uggo. Like, I'm not feeling sorry for myself or craving some kind of public consolation. I just think that I might have some features which might have been more prized in a different place or time, but that I'm also probably in a non-majority group of people that just wouldn't be considered ideal anywhere at any time. Like, literally any people that has ever been would look at my face and have some notes? (I still like being me, fwiw!)
But while I'm fundamentally bothered by the idea of any beauty hierarchy among the Essences, so many of them are described mainly in terms of specifically attractive characteristics. I have literally been trying to figure out whether the Natural essence is the only available source that could explain a person like me being... visually wonky. (Obviously there are Natural Essence supermodels. Without question, there are many extremely beautiful Naturals. But if you're NOT quite pretty, is there room for that/explanation for that anywhere other than the Natural essence?) And I think what this video has helped me to work out, precisely by being so careful and so detailed, is the Natural is NOT in my Essence blend. The more specific you get about what the Natural means, the *less* it fits me, despite me being plain and ordinary in my... some-other-brand way. I think I do *use* the Natural in some outfits as a way of toning down/adding some of that seriousness while keeping the sensuousness of the Romantic essence out of the equation. This is partly lifestyle (as a teacher, it's my personal choice to keep my mature yin side kind of stashed away) but also maybe a little from anxiousness and insecurity. Like... I do have some fairly Romantic pieces in my wardrobe, and they are, in fact, really quite good. But modeling them for other people feels a little more high stakes than the more innocent and playful stuff?
I don't really want to expose my style to comments from the internet, but I can't help but wonder if I would encounter some gate-keeping impulses. It can feel very audacious to claim that you have two fonts of youthfulness in your blend when you're also 40+ and look your age, and likewise to claim that you have both cute and sexy yin in your blend, when femininity itself has been so hard to separate, as a concept, from being beautiful in a consumable way. Like, how can I say I have both the cute and the sexy, if no one thinks I am either cute or sexy? This all still feels a bit transgressive to me, but all I know is: if you delete the Ingenue from my wardrobe it stops working for me.
When the main series on each of the Essences is finished, it would mean so much to me if you'd consider a video comparing and contrasting plus-size celebrities and/or using famous women who are not famous for beauty. It makes all the sense in the world to use celebrity images for this kind of project. They're familiar and available and seem more fair to comment on. But sometimes my brain just slides off one exceptionally beautiful (expensively styled) face after another, and I struggle to see myself in any of them. I hugely appreciate that you've included plus size examples from the very beginning and obviously do not treat them all alike! Thank you for that! But I think there might be a lot more I could learn from a video that goes even deeper

Oh my goodness! The work you put into this video is so phenomenal and much appreciated! I didn’t realize how much of a natural I was (and was almost outright rejecting the idea of it due to wanting to look more “polished” and “chic”) until you described the personality traits and ideal setting. Everyone throughout my life has called me sporty looking, friendly looking, relaxed, easy going… and I am the girl who enjoys a fresh loaf of baked bread and my only goal for my house is to be cozy 😂 so thank you for the deep dive and digging into the nitty gritty on all this. It has shown me so much! Now I have to go find my other essences , but accepting that my base is natural is all thanks to you!
Also at some point I’d love to see you do a pregnancy/ postpartum outfit guide for the essences/ body types (no rush on it you’re doing saint’s work with these essences videos) I’m about to give birth to my first kid and it has been such a struggle to find clothes I feel confident in. I so do appreciate when you put in the mom outfits because it shows me fashion can be functional too! Thanks again for all you do❤❤❤

Romantic-natural here, didn’t realize I had natural essence before I consulted with some parents/close friends to figure it out. I knew I was definitely romantic, but it didn’t explain why I could rock leather jackets, Doc Martens, long denim skirts, and misplaced belts in the same outfit. Went against everything I thought I should’ve worn as a romantic. Not to mention, boho styles. Everything makes sense now! Thank you for showing me how to bring these things together.

WOW!!! Finally! I have felt like I have a natural essence but dont like too boho chic. And finally. Did the test on your site. After consigning myself to the opinions that I fit best into the kibbe DC category. And found that I have highlighted natural, gamine/high-spirited, classic (and ingenue) and this feels so right. It finally clicked. Afte so many months (or years) of confusion and searching. Ruling out.
Your examples in the end cinched it, I like everything and would tey them out in a store or could fins it on my Pinterest boards. So THANK YOU! ❤️❤️Much love from Sweden

So boho dresses like this would actually be romantic/natural per kitcheners original resources. And the larger print would lean more dramatic. So I think this is the perfect example of the “romantic nomad” or what kitchener called “romantic gypsy” (which is what I identify as 👍🏻). But thank you! Glad you like it 😊

I realised I was 'soft natural' and 'soft autumn' when it struck me that my best clothes look like they have been steeped in tea and then left out in the sun for weeks. I literally cannot wear anything near my face without a small print or texture, and God forbid that I try to 'style' my hair, it looks best after a day in the wind. I would love to wear a structured suit :(

So I just found your channel the other day. Decided to watch each see dive video on the different essences, after watching an overview video I had an idea but wasn’t positive. I can’t believe how exact these descriptions define me and I’m realizing I always associated this type of clothing with being sloppy looking because that’s how I was raised and so I’ve always dressed more casual and felt badly when I dressed more comfy/casual. Like that was maybe ok at home but not ok to go out in. Now watching this I’m going ok but these relaxed styles look good on me, I also think I am a flamboyant natural so it seems like the two fit together very nicely. Funny how we can have biases about certain types of clothing/ looks!

The Natural has the best style, but I'm too short, non-physical, and introverted to be one. I don't do "homesteading" in any form, not even gardening. I took Library Science in the 8th grade to get OUT of Home Economics. 🙂
Which essence would include the nerd who would rather read cozy mysteries, drink coffee, watch science fiction, and think about life, the universe and everything, doing so in comfy clothes?
Edit: I made this comment early on in the video. Yes, short little me is a Natural. Whew! I feel most at home with this essence. I may have a Classic secondary, because my go-to outfit in high school was an untucked Oxford shirt, open at the collar, over a pair of flare jeans and sneakers. A faux silver and turquoise owl pendant finished the look. I sometimes think I had a better idea of who I was stylistically before I fell down the rabbit hole of color and style analysis.

Funny story: I found out I was a natural essence by wearing every color/outfit Jodie Foster wore in The Silence of The Lambs. The colors were earthy, and the shapes were casual to chase a killer in, yet professional enough for a job. I loved her style so much, and once I put it on, out were all my large patterned clothes. Natural essence is perfect for my outdoor work, my "relaxed" and delicate low-visual-weight face features.

edit after 4 months: i think im natural-romantic and some of ingenue. i was thinking maybe my somehow shortness quality coming from gamine but inegune seems more resonating since i think the girlish sweet little details suits me more than color blocking and little bold and geometrics.

Thank you a lot for this well written and well thought video! I really appreciate you taking the time to do all this and I’m amazed that you seem to keep the same update rhythm… I think it’s something that should really be noted: this must take you so much effort and energy. I hope you know how good and helpful your work is.
At first I was disappointed the natural essence didn’t have any shape because I felt it was the piece missing for me to understand fully this essence but the word relaxed makes so much sense and now it all clicked!
I’m pretty sure I’m yang dominant and that it’s mostly natural essence (whatever I plan to wear I always end up with a laid-back version of the outfit). I do believe I also have a small scale essence too but gamine or ingenue? It’s hard for me to differentiate them even if I know the theory : my eye isn’t trained yet… Even if I’d love the gamine video to be the most thorough I love that your videos goes from most yin to most yang, so gamine next please

Thank you so so much! This is such a kind and appreciated comment and it makes me happy to hear it's helping clarify the natural essence. I always worry I'm not posting enough but the videos are so long, and I don't want to break them up (so that's a relief to hear!).
Yes, the word relaxed at first seems really ambiguous but I think once you really understand a relaxed feel in clothes (through different elements) it really helps you see if your HTT is working or veering to confining or somethings off.
I do plan to go over the difference between gamine and ingenue in the gamine video- its a highly requested differentiation. The essence trait chart might help clarify some of the physical characteristics. But since gamine is playful yang, and ingenue is decorative yin, gamines tend to have more sharpness and be more spunky/quirky. Whereas ingenue tends to be more delicate/frilly/round- sometimes almost doll like. So in the same way one leans more yang (gamine) and one leans more yin (ingenue) they both exemplify that in clothes and features.
