      Not much of an issue for a "work truck," which is what these were sold as. Plus speed limits were a lot lower back then...still does a mile a minute, uphill, at 7,000' MSL.

      Christmas Gummyworm The one they were driving wasn't a 350. It was a 305. 30 years old in a lifted truck with giant tires going up a hill. Of course it can't keep up! Still running though! The 350 was running strong too.

    My opinion for a crate motor would be a 383 with aftermarket EFI...like Holley. A 6.0 iron block would be cool too but it'd be sweet to keep it old school with modern upgrades instead of a restomod.

    I've said it once and I will say it again: a junkyard 5.3 swap is the answer! You can make crazy hp out of the stock engine components and the entire trucks sell around here for a dime a dozen. I voted for the LS3 on your website though.

    People are just yelling out swaps that are so commonplace or the absolute biggest and most expensive engines they can think of. *"DROP A LSX IN THERE!! NO WAIT, MAKE THAT A 572 BIG BLOCK!! YEAH!!!"* And honestly, anything you really could put in there is something we've probably already thought of or have seen a 1,000,000x over. How about putting in something we aren't expecting?

    Unless there is something really wrong with the stock engine I would just rebuild it. Maybe add a turbo for those uphill climbs. I think it's the gearing that is the main problem, those tires are not stock. My f-150 had the 4.9l strait 6, it would go fast uphills in 3rd gear with stock tire size.

    adam was right about the front end configuration! I have an 80 k10 I'm building with an ls engine and in 80, they have the square headlights and the round headlights..... I think Scottsdale, which i have, was the only one that came with round 7"headlights and 2 different grille options...... they are a mystery body style.... I have a k10 which is a half Ton, with 3/4 ton springs, 3/4 Tom axels that are configured for 6 lug, the ls6 350 which is a 4bolt main with hydrolic roller rockers from factory, the th350 and an np205 tcase... also the front axel is a dana 44 which is a rare option in 80 bc they stopped really putting them in since 78 but a special option they were (from what i was told from gm heritage) the factory 10bolt front axle is the exact same thing as the Dana 44 just the gm product but thwy are interchangeable parts wise depending on your axles and gears!!!!! They are great trucks and a lot of potential.... I love straight axles and had them in all my trucks and so did my dad...... the hearing sucks especially since I have 3.08 so i can be doing 75 but the engine is running at 4k rpms lol but shes a good truck...... beat up and old and smoked a ton and leaks every fluid except gas.... only reason why it does leak gas is because she uses it before it even leaks lol I love you truck though looking forward for the build.... like the old body style better.... also, with a 73-80 c/k102030, the hood bows in the center which they are notorious for but they make good braces at LMCTRUCK to keep it from doing it in the future....... If you if need a repair manual from 1980 let me know and ill see if i can post the link.... it literally shows yoy how to diagnose everything from each pin on the electrical to the torque spec on the carb bolts!!!!!!

    @The Fast Lane Truck Do something that others don't. Throw a tuned Duramax/Allison in there. Even a used LBZ or something. Do it up right make it look factory under the hood. You'd have a hotrod that I haven't been able to find anywhere on RUclips. Plus everyone does big engines or Cummins swaps, dare to be different...

      Ruins the truck you have a simple easy to work on reliable truck, slap a POS new diesel of all things in you might as well just buy a new truck. Cummin 12v is still a SIMPLE motor that is why you see them going in...

    • @Hmmm-ILikePancakes
      @Hmmm-ILikePancakes 7 лет назад

      Matt Lane nobody said they weren't reliable or cool easy. I said they're everywhere and the a Duramax would be different. If it was a Ford I would have said 6.7 power stroke, but it's a Chevy so I say newer Duramax. An 800hp twin turbo smallblock isn't as reliable as others as well but guess what, people do it anyway. Like I said in my opening comment, dare to be different.

    2 Choices. #1 With 461 horsepower and 558 lb-ft of torque, our 502 HO crate engine has power on tap for every need - whether it’s a ’69 Chevelle at the drag strip or the Suburban that towed it there! #2 The HT502 is rated at 406 horsepower and a whopping 541 lb-ft of trailer-tugging torque. That’s more than the factory ever offered and more than you’ll get with a stock-type rebuild. It is uniquely suited to pre-1978 trucks, but is adaptable to a variety of applications.

    Y'all should give it a fuel injected 350 or 383.

  • @ovrlxnd
    @ovrlxnd 7 лет назад

    My 87 had the TBI 350 and a Hypertech chip with no mufflers and dual pipes after the cat. It never lacked for power, and it sounded great! It would break over the 35s even though it only had 3.42s, although that was always a bad idea in a 200,000 mile 10-bolt that would grenade the spider gears every few years. The 1987 TBI setup was good for an additional 50 HP over the carbureted from the previous years, but the Cold War-era OBD system wasn't particularly adept at giving you useful codes when things started going wrong. I think you should just build a mild 350 for the truck and use a modern aftermarket OBD2 fuel injection solution. You'll have the best of both worlds: a bolt-in engine, built of affordable, common parts, that plays good with modern scan tools.

    Chevy trucks 1981 had turn signals in the bumper, it was the only year in 1982 they moved them to the grill and the light configuration was determined by trim level, the higher trims had 4 head lights apposed to the two light setups . I would put a low compression 350 in with a turbo for your altitude.

    • @BERPSU1
      @BERPSU1 7 лет назад

      Turns signals were in the bumper in '82 also. Wasn't a one year thing. They weren't moved to the grill (on quad light models) or below the headlights (single headlight models) until '83.

    I'd consider an LS2 with a carbureted intake.
    460HP!
    Easy installation.
    Another option would be a LSX 454.
    Perhaps a 5.3 crate engine?
    Great power and torque, with some good gas mileage, but a more complex installation.
    You can find a set of CUCV axles to back it all up for about $1,600-$2,000.
    Maybe I'm just projecting my own wish list for my 1985 GMC Sierra 4X4? 🤔

    What gear ratio does Big Green have. My '80 Powerwagon has 3.2ish gears. It also has the granny low first gear NP-435 transmission, turning 35" mud tires. Still running the original 360 4bbl, and the part of watching you guys bouncing around the cab, made me smile. My PW is like that, 4" lift, but it's a long bed, club cab, when my daughter was 6, her first ride in the truck, she looked at me, and said this is like riding in the back of a school bus. 15 years later I've gathered Dana 60 axles, NP-205 transfer case, and the 1 ton drive shafts. Going from 1/2 ton to 1 ton drive train. I think gear ratio is still to high, I wanted 4.10.

    My dad restored his 70's GMC 3/4 ton long bed stepside after deer hunting on the interstate. 35" tires with 6" of body lift plus 4" in the suspension, even with the stock 350 it'll drive through or over any damn thing that gets in it's way! Funny enough he also calls it Big Green 😊

  • @JoeliusZ28
    @JoeliusZ28 7 лет назад

    You've got a nice ride with the green truck the way it is, I wouldn't want to get too crazy with changes. I'd like to see a mild 350 or 383 - keep it simple and add some usable torque or top end, or maybe a 5.3 LS. too much power and you're going to wind up re-engineering the rest of the truck. Wheel hop and the strength of the half ton rear axle will become issues with too much power.
    Also regarding your question about the headlights & grille. Single vs Dual headlights relates to the trim level and optioning for 81-87 trucks. Custom Deluxe trucks (base model) all came with single headlights. Scottsdale (mid-level) could have single or dual, and Silverado (loaded) all came with dual headlights. The badges are removed on your truck but some of the shots of the interior show base model optioning (door panel style & black gauge bezel), so I would guess you have a fairly original custom deluxe model. The center section of the grille is for an 85-87 truck, but grilles are easily interchangeable. You can change to dual headlights but it requires changing the front core support that the lights mount to.

    The headlights are not quads because of the trim level of the truck. Big Green is a base model which is evident by the lack of headliner, black gauge cluster, and short door panels.

    Put an old but not so old Duramax 6.6 LML in it, beef up the suspension put new macho wheels and tires and undercoat the frame.

    @TheFastLaneTruck : Ram Jet 350 crate engine with electric radiator fan would be the perfect engine for big green, you can buy it straight from Chevrolet online, I'm sure Chevrolet might even give you a discount or something for advertising posibly.

    Readers remember, they're looking for a sponsored unit. So likely the compromise will be between what TFLtruck would like to get and what GM feels they need to steer attention toward. So maybe one of the better, yet lower selling units.

    Keep big green simple, a 350 simple crate engine, Holley fuel injection kit, and the biggest thing that will help, is gearing, find some used 3/4, 1 ton axles and re-gear it, 3.73's or 4.10s.

    I had an 89 chevy station wagon with a 305 in it. As the compression started to go so did the hill climbing ability on the highway. Look out the piston compression could be going bye bye with the power.

    8100 Vortec crate engine would be great for weight distribution in Big Green or put a 6.2L in for higher stock horsepower and torque but you can get creative and put an LS Stroker in it.

    I'd just put a 350 in there with a few mild upgrades to it. It'd be hard to do anything to crazy without changing the transmission internals. I'd like to see a 383 stroker in it though

    For Big Green, I'd want to keep it in the budget and go for reliability. You don't want to have to work on it when it should be out wheeling. A mildly built 350 with a 5 speed. ;)

    Like the channel, but neither guy here seems to know much about the osb's. On another note, I vote Duramax/Allison or Common rail Cummins/ Allison, but then you'd have to run a ford front or divorced 205 t-case. Unless someone has come out with an adapter to mate the 205 to the Allison.

    If GM is going to assist with a crate motor, stay with the idea of keeping the theme of an "all GM components" truck. To make the swap as easy as possible, and as road worthy and usable as possible, going with a nice healthy Vortec style GM performance 383 small block stroker motor (GM Part #19332529 340H.P., 435 Lb-Ft. of torque), upgrade the cooling system, an E.F.I. system(Holley, Mallory, etc.), a modernized ignition system(say..., Mallory) and focus on your drivetrain with some gears from Yukon Gear, say 4.10:1(original 4-speed) or 4.33:1 (if you were to option out a later model 5-speed or 6-speed option, which would certainly help the over-the-road ability) with the size of tires you're using and add a set of ARB air lockers, or Detroit lockers. From that point, make sure all of your wear components like u-joints, seals, etc. are replaced and maintained, good brakes and a GOOD set of shocks like the Bilstiens on the 76 in the video, or a set of Fox shocks if you can get them. P.S.; I tried to drop a few names that you might try to get some "sponsorship" help from to gentlemen. Good luck and happy building!
