  • The wooden dummy, also known as the Wing Chun wooden dummy or Muk Yan Jong, is a training tool used in martial arts, particularly in Wing Chun Kung Fu. It consists of a wooden frame with various arms and legs extending from it, mimicking the shape and positioning of an opponent. The origins of the wooden dummy can be traced back to the Shaolin Temple in China, where it was initially developed as a training aid for martial artists.
The exact historical origins of the wooden dummy are not well-documented, but it is believed to have been adapted from older training methods used in the Shaolin Temple. The purpose of the wooden dummy is to provide a solid structure that practitioners can train against, helping them develop accuracy, precision, and control in their techniques. It allows martial artists to practice striking, blocking, and footwork in a controlled and repetitive manner.
The wooden dummy is constructed using durable wood, typically made from a single piece or multiple sections that are securely joined together. It is designed to withstand repeated impact and force during training sessions. The arms and legs of the dummy are positioned at specific angles and heights to simulate different attacks and defenses.
Over time, the wooden dummy has become an iconic symbol of Wing Chun Kung Fu, and its popularity has spread to other martial arts styles as well. It continues to be an integral part of training for many practitioners, providing a unique and effective way to refine their techniques and enhance their martial arts skills.

Don't forget that Bruce trained on a wooden dummy daily too. His knuckles were deformed because of this. However when a block to a punch occurs it can hurt very much because the forearms become as hard as wood because of this way of training

Bruce Lee knuckles were deformed due to the training of the one inch punch, daily series of push ups with fists closed over gross materials(starting from sisal carpet, up to cement tile's inside bottom), to strenghten the knucles, wrists and forearms to be able to withstand the destrutive force of the punch. Beyond this, there are other exercises to strengthen the whole arm and back muscles, to achieve the needed power in a short distance punch.

I love this Teacher’s work, he has so much strength built up over many years of daily diligent training….he could use so much more force if he chose to..but he choose not to. He is so very responsible with & regarding the legal use of force, always, & choose great mercy instead, lol. He basically just toying with his opponent(s), slapping them around enough to stop them with minimal or no injury, & showing them the error of their ways, & winning with love always.
It’s humorous & hilarious lol. This guy can break you in half with one hand tied behind his back, 300 times before you can blink, but choose to only stop you, & teach you, & slap you around a bit.
    It’s remarkable & very funny.
Great Teacher, man. This student he is teaching has great speed on the Muk Jong, that is fast.

I don't know but i think the wushu styles where developed for self defense and for fights without big gloves. So maybe that is why the wing chun is not effective in UFC? Did you ever thinked why the boxers or mma fighters always want to fight in gloves with karate or wushu fighters? Maybe because they will lose with that much of different techniques used with bare hands like counters, blocks and palm strikes on the sensitive spots like neck or celiac plexus?
