I used to travel around the world and train in all the local martial arts, so I've trained in many martial arts in my time, and I have to say Kalaripayattu was physically the hardest. The body conditioning was intense, but you are never left to suffer. The massage they do is a deep as Thai massage and as soothing as Swedish, and when you train with them you are not just a student, you have to become part of the family. There is also something very special about training on rough dirt as opposed to raised floor, tiles, or even grass. I trained in Kerala in the late 80s, and I've never really understood why more people are not aware or, or practising this art. Maybe that's a good thing. I just wanted to say this martial art is very, very special.
+Benjamin Zephaniah Good comment, being a person that is generally very interested in martial arts, fighting, and combat sports, and now as of late also very intrigued by just movement of the human body and other living organisms, seeing this video and discovering that this art was formed very early on, is extremely interesting especially that it is/could be the pioneer to arts such as Kung-fu, karate and Jiu Jitsu, as I train in Goju-Kai (Goju-Ryu off shoot) which comes from Kung-fu itself and also now training in BJJ. I just think this kind of stuff is fascinating and your comment is a good insight seeing as you've actually trained it, maybe one day I can give it a try too, I'd definitely be up for it if I ever had the chance...

The British occupation is the main reason Kalari is almost an extinct martial art now. They banned its practice in the 19th century and jailed or killed off most of most of the practitioners of this art. What is being practiced now is just 20-30% of the original art form. The rest is lost to history. However, it's good to know that some of the younger practitioners of this art are now learning and adapting techniques from newer martial arts like Krav Maga and incorporating it into Kalari. It will evolve into a full fledged fighting technique in the future. This almost feels like a metaphor for India. Over millennia many tried cut us down and destroy our way of life but none succeeded. We evolved and adapted and made what was foreign as our own while at the same time remaining true to our roots.
I'm a kung fu teacher... It's very important to preserve ancient traditions. So many are being lost. Interesting video, always nice to see new information.
Dharma did not build Shaolin Temple at all. Shaolin Temple was built during the China ,Northern Wei Dynasty. Before he came to China, Shaolin Temple already existed. He was the Shaolin Temple that was later arrived. This place was very suitable for practice. At that time, many monks in the temple were Chinese Kung Fu. They were learning Kung Fu on weekdays. Because the temple was built in the mountains, some Kung Fu needed to resist wild tiger beasts. After that, these kung fu joined some boxing methods. It has developed into Shaolin Kung Fu . Dharma did not participate in the establishment, and Dharma itself did not understand kung fu. Dharma is just a monk. He has not established a lot of achievements for Chinese kung fu, and he died in the record that Dharma finally died of food poisoning. Buddhism and Buddhists have many lies and exaggerated content.
@@abcxyz- Martial arts exist since de war exists. Tradicional martial arts are martial arts that has been preserved somehow (it depends on the region). And yes, sometimes, some traditional martial arts took concepts, strategies and techniques from the closest martial cultures around. But also many times the so called "oldest one" have taken much more from another empire or kingdom when this was really more powerfull that nowdays most of its movements cames from the other one. Things are not so simple. And there is no Adam or Eve of martial arts. Actually, I prefer the concept wu-shu than kung-fu because it englobes better the idea of martial art.
Unfortunately, Indians are insecure to embrace their culture that they're turning towards western culture. Very few really understand, love and respect our culture.
Logical and makes good sense as I was always led to believe that the Indian Buddhist monk Bodhidharma who is credited with the introduction of physical training of the monks at Shaolin Monastery that led to the creation of traditional Shaolin Kungfu is originally from Southern India. Very interesting thank you for my Kalaripayattu history lesson.

As a malayali not being able to learn kalari will be one of my biggest regret in my life Kerala government should make it mandatory to learn kalari in school for self defense. This will also preserve this art
What most people regret most at the end of their lives is that they did not learn Kalaripayat. Everyone must learn Kalaripayat in order to live a life without regrets and to face death with a smile at the last moment of life. Because Kalaripayat is the mother of all martial arts.

This is first class informational video. Kalaripayattu was mentioned to me by a person from Kerala who lives in my community here near Munich, Germany. So checked it out on Google, found this video and after less than 6 Minutes I have a complete picture of this fascinating activity. Explained very well!
I am sure more is learned as the student practices. 5% is all that is taught anyway, while the student discovers the other 95% within oneself, or they give up. but what do i know.
It's funny how people accuse India for claiming them having first But when Greece does it, they keep shut They think Greek civilization is quite the first of everything (even tho it isn't)
Who's accusing India of anything? Simply put, the originated the EASTERN martial arts. Western martial arts: Pancrase, Boxing, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Classical fencing, etc. were untouched by the east.
Actually, the Indian civilization outdated the Greek one by atleast 5000 years. Indian influences on Greek philosophy is well documented. Sorry, you're way off.
@Silas Law he taught them to fight Before kung fu there was Chinese boxing, wasn't actually kung fu And it was not bodhidharma But buddhabhadra Edit - kung fu is an umbrella term for all Chinese martial arts So what he gave was shaolin kung fu

+Allen Ayler it's considered by many Martial arts experts like Chris Crudelli to potentially be the original inspiration for shoalin kungfu. it isn't a deceptive title, most people interested in Martial arts are aware of its reputation.
***** I think you misunderstand the nature of the question. It was in order to aquire more knowledge. For example, through wikipedia I know that Kalaripayattu started about 754 years ago, and the earliest forms of kung fu were reported about 4000 years ago (2698 BCE).
@Arjun Warrior while the idea that bhodidharma first taught martial arts to the chinese in the shaolin temple is very popular and even the shaloin temple seems to embrace this myth in reality it is not so. The shaolin monastery was built in 495 AD but records of martial arts being practiced in china predates it by a couple of hundred years, some of the earliest records go as far back as the 5th century BCE. There are indications that some of the first chinese students to join the shaolin monastery namely Huiguang, Senchou and Huike were previously military men and they probably taught the other monks. I used to believe the myth myself as a kid but as I got more into historical reaearch it became quite evident the tale was not true.
@@Ponen77 martial art is basically a form of fighting.... By that logic, it's the Greek's who came up with it first (as far as we know) it's a mixture of boxing and grappling techniques....
Kalaripayattu is the mother of all martial art forms. It's gaining in popularity because it uniquely combines defence techniques, dance, yoga and healing systems. It boosts both physical and mental fitness and body flexibility and functioning. People who are discrediting it as one of the oldest, if not the oldest is unaware and also unwilling to accept this.

Thank you for preserving and reviving this great art. My simple-minded suggestions: 1. please fully digitally document this martial art form in text and video 2. Evolve it into a sport and get it included in competitions 3. Spar with fighters from other martial arts in friendly matches to evolve Kalari.
@cashdro That makes sense. May be schools would be interested in teaching it to kids? Kerala government could sponsor the costs. On a pilot basis. I think some of Sadhguru's model schools teach Kalari.
Thank you for sharing this! It’s just one more reason, to understand how much the British owe to those they “colonized”! The loss of culture, in so many aspects, is unacceptable! I’m so glad, this original martial arts form, is being revived!
It is also a good idea to try understanding how much those that were colonized owe to British. Starting with India, who thanks to colonization now have in many places running waterclosets, roads and modern technology. Not to forget simple fact of having English as state language which allow Indian cheap (not so much cheap today, though) laborers, like in IT field spread all over the world. And ending with Hong Kong which is today (still) takes first place in the world for life expectancy while adjacent to it China, which was not colonized by British, is on around 50 place.
@Maulana CheemaIf you don't know anything please dont speak. No Kalaripayatu was not practiced anywhere other than Kerala and some parts of tamil. Different regions in India have different martial arts.
It will be nice if Indians concentrate more on learning these martial arts and preserving their culture, than forcing their kids to make it to IIT. Better to grow our dying arts before it is too late. Brains alone are not important, Brawn is equally important and we need to develop it.
Lost Spirit ™ Both are important, Brains and Brawn. I did not go to IIT, I am doing quite well now. Makes no difference. Went to a lower rung Indian college, still ended up in the US and doing well.
I really hope that this martial form is revitalized further. More and more the martial scene is dominated by a few, easily recognized martial arts, and others are beginning to fade. Not that it's bad to practice Karate, Jujitsu, or Kenjitsu, however. I'm just saying that preserving the diversity in martial arts is important, if not for anything but understanding different philosophies on combat, as well as the history of each art. I personally practice Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), which has gained a fair amount of resurgence in the past couple of decades, but I am of the opinion that martial arts of all cultures should be preserved to the best of human ability. As such, keep going. For the sake of your history and your art.
Exactly! I'm personally looking at the HEMA inspired efforts of reviving native historical martial arts methods in China, Africa, and the Middle-East with great interest :)

+Blair Phillips India has been around longer than China? I thought the mainstream Indians entered the subcontinent about the time of the Rig Veda. There is a direct archaeological line in China from the Paleolithic through the Neolithic up to now. (~~ the city of 濟南 Jinan, Shandong, has been inhabited continuously for about 7,500 years.)
It is true that Kung Fu, Karate and other martial arts are formed from the the Indian martial arts. I watched a documentary about the Shaolin Temple and there was this person named Bodhi Dharma who came from India to China and taught them martial arts and Buddhism. That's how the Shaolin Temple was founded.
It is true that the founder of Chinese martial arts was Indian. However, the direct influence of other martial arts is not large. Kalaripayat is acknowledged as the mother of Chinese martial arts. But it's hard to believe that it's the mother of all martial arts.
Awesome. Just awesome. I really love learning martial arts from different areas of the world. It's such a shame that most of us probably can't learn this martial art since it's not as widespread as karate or boxing.
I will admit the the role of Indian martial arts, even though one doesn't usually hear of it, nor is it particularly prized among Indians themselves, is indispensable to this discussion. The main reason is religion. Noone doubts that virtually all the Asian martial arts including, Kung fu, Karate, Taekwondo, Bokator, Muay Thai, Escrima and Silat are strongly associated with the practices of Buddhism (Theravada and Mahayana) and Hinduism. Both are of course Dharmic faiths that originated in India. However claiming one style as the source of all others is bold and probably untrue. My feeling is more that most countries had their own martial traditions that then influenced each other.
+David Lea It's possible Indian martial traditions carried over to the far East but more than likely unless those in the far East were peaceful reptilians that they were doing some fighting and had their own traditions. Effective martial arts tend to rely on the same principles and therefore what was brought over from Indian was more than likely not dissimilar from what was already being practiced locally. obviously the nonsense in the video is just dance just like a lot of modern Chinese 'martial arts' and has nothing to do with actual combat. Then again most 'martial arts' today are filled with at least some nonsense as no pioneer worth their salt is going to attempt to sell a fighting system that is identical to what others are selling. Martial arts is obviously not exclusive to Asia, it is a human and global phenomena.
+Faris A lot of these martial arts are quite basic even if over time they have developed their own intricacies....things like Muay thai are simple enough that it wouldn't matter whether or not it had existed...random untrained idiots have been throwing elbows, knees, kicks, punches and grappling with each other since before humans existed as they do today.
Faris Hahaha Wrestling isn't any fighting style it is just A scripted Show for entertainment lol John Cena fan go you can't understand culture and history

@J 1995 I do agree martial arts existed way before in China. But kalarippayatt was mentioned way before 11 century ad. I am not any making claims as to whether kalari influenced kung fu or not, but kalari is indeed an ancient martial arts. There is actually written records of it in Sangam literature. And once again I do believe martial arts did exist in China even way before Shaolin. But for that you don't have to downgrade this art form, it is indeed ancient. And for proof you have to read sangam literature. And yes kalari is not refined as other martial art forms such as kung fu, bcos it was lost and was not passed on to other generations like other martial art forms, but a revival is happening now.

All kicks, punches and blocks (Geri, Soki and Uke) with absolute proper practical striking (Uchii) applications of limbs are already there in that art completely since then, which are taught in all martial arts with different names world over till date. Ah...I thought India was only looted during Colonial times. No dought far eastern martial are known worldwide and this martial art remaimed unnoticed during 20th century. Why are some western people in the comment section are going haywire when Mr. Prasad says that it is the earliest martial art form and that it influenced other forms of martial arts? So Buddhism can travel from India but not this one. Sanskrit script and Indian deities can travel to Far east but not this one? He never claimed that it gave birth to some new martial arts.....common people.
***** It is the earliest martial art form because the written texts speaking about this one predates all other forms. It was through silk route that it travelled across so many new places. Talking about influence just look at the murals, paintings and written accounts of so many centres in Far East which has not been destroyed over the years. In many of those paintings there are dark skinned people with saffron or yellow robes shown visiting to those centres. The director should have cleared all these doubts in the video itself. If you say that you want exact things thats not possible for me to tell and I don't think it is possible for anyone.
***** As far as I know not only the moves but also other things that make this art form. It is not surprising if Yoga can be survive. I cannot see the reason why can't this.
***** "if you take a look at karate, wrestling, boxing etc they have all mutated dramatically" I have thought long on this and the reason is Anglo Saxon's marketising and branding of everythimg. There are many so called yoga classess in west which are just like new age karate. But dude it is not the case here. When I said Yoga and Kalari didnot change is because I know as I have seen and been a part of groups and people who does not believe in 'marketing' these ancient techniques. And so must be true for Karate, Kung fu and other Eastern techniques. There must be many passionate people who might have preserved it in its original form.
+Abhishek Kumar Dev We all agree that it's an interesting martial form with a long history, but what's the proof that influenced other forms of martial arts, especially the ones on Oriental East? In contract, I think the ancient form of Shaolin kung fu and jiu jitsu gave birth to this kalaripayatt when ancient monks from China traveled to India.
being able to defend from any attack with any weapon at any angle sounds useful, however, the prerequisite of having a right topsoil and a deity watching over you for that to work is kind of a hassle.
Because karate and Taekwondo itself came from one part of Chinese kung fu.
😢😢This martial art should prevail!

I hope you knew as a king Fu master that Kung Fu is born out of kalari..
Kalaripayttu is the oldest martial arts. Bodhidharma( founder of Shaolin Kung fu) is Tamil prince from Tamil Nadu India .

I personally practice Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), which has gained a fair amount of resurgence in the past couple of decades, but I am of the opinion that martial arts of all cultures should be preserved to the best of human ability.

During colonisation brittish oppressed the practice and spread of kalari because this started to be a challenge for them
As a Keralite myself, i feel proud
+ahsan ahsan ....You think he's referring to 'scripted television programs' when referring to early historical era wrestling?
Hi David, this is what i think. " What about saying "very old"? And does he think China learned Martial Arts from India? This is ridiculous.
I feel more educated now. I think this martial art should be one of the prominent ones in modern culture. It's very interesting and looks like it flows like water, very fluid movements. If I were younger I might try it out!

Wow, so intense! In the minute 2:51 a spark fly from the intensity of the impact. What an interesting video
Such eloquence by the Gurukal... blessed to get a chance to practice the ancient knowledge of my ancestors...🙏😇
They are so in tune with one another, during combat. I love this style.
So, the man said it himself: once you know this martial art, you can protect yourself from any attack at any ankle...basically that what a martial art should be for. And as the original form of martial arts, I believe that with this, you can protect yourself against any other martial art. I kinda would like to learn this, it feels unique.
Now Vidyut Jamwaal is reloading this ancient Martial arts😊👍
Hats off to Vidyut sir❤️😊😊
Who is vidyut sir🤔
There are lot of kalari scholors in kerala who perform better than vidyut...
Quite an interesting martial art, very impressive. I didn't even know that India had a Martial Art 😮
That flexible sword, holy snap that would be some scary shit to learn and face!
Much respect to those who practice and keep this art alive! 🇦🇺

India has soo many things just hidden under ignorance
Not just a martial art, the oldest and source of all other major martial arts especially that expanded in china, korea
You didn't even know that India has a martial art. Damn that pains me 😂
This has been a vast land. There were many fighting techniques practiced once upon a time.
Very happy to see the science of India finally getting its due respect! Keep up this good work, will help boost the Indian morale.

BhodiDharma Indian King Migrated to China.

Also the wrong distance for most of the weapons, active shield blocking and a bunch of other stuff that is highly ineffective. But all we saw looked like what you would call Katas in japanese martial arts, predefined movement. Any kind of martial arts or fighting technique is of no use to you until you get a flow like water and a feel of lightness inside your body like your all body parts have a brain of their own but are coordinated so well with you.
Once you achieve this you can perfect all martial arts and even hidden forms that can only be passed from a teacher to student only if student is worthy.
Its all about your self control and flow of energy in your body which LL make you feel like a bird then no matter if you are against 40 people.
You LL feel them in slow motion and can counter or destroy as you want.
And with enough intense meditation and austerities you can be like a superhuman .
All it takes is practice and detachment to control your mind and body.
That's pretty cool. Stuff like this should never be lost. I hope it continues to grow.
Thanks for this VDO, this art must be spread in youths thru competition, and must be send to all India level.

The oldest martial art is a group kicking a person on the floor, it originates from ancient slavland.
No...that was just "martial" there was not art in that.
@@ankurshah23 Oh no my friend, we the Slavs take great pride in our curb stomping technique, it is undoubtedly an art form.
@@ankurshah23 some people just can't respect the art form that is curb stomping
Ankur Shah the first martial art was wrestling
I never knew kicking someone is an art by itself!
Why is it important which martial art was the first? The first martial art was throwing stones and swinging wooden clubs.
throwing stones and etc do not comes under it and no one can categorise it as the same.If you want to know what are martial arts and how is different from throwing stones ; get your ass before a martial artist he will let you know. Don't ever looked down upon anything, they are meant for purpose unless stated otherwise
I don't look don't look down on anybody. Perhaps you shoul re-read my question. Thank you
You are right of course. But Indians have lost almost everything and now just slaves to a western Democratic system. Thus they hold on to ancient draams. words such as "we were the first" are very critical to hold on to their pride. Let them say it. leave them alone.
But that was a nice one - throwing stone was first Martial Art. Indeed.
+Viking VST conspicuously not. It is the symbol of parochialism that you people are expressing explicitly.
you can't out rightly say that Indians are the slaves to western democratic system. be respectful to any country. This is the era of globalization,,and an era of multipolar world. This multipolar system encompasses india also. That is why even USA is tilting towards india as a central location of "asia pivot"., let me breakdown everything .
india is not claiming it is better than any other country. its sphere of influence can be assessed through the following
1. Cultural sphere- birth place of Buddhism, jainism.
its cusines are world famous. symbol of 'Track 2 ' diplomacy -yoga , which influenced the creation of International Yoga Day, everyone in the corner of the earth (except polar ice caps dominated arctic and antarctic geographical regions) practising yoga.
Highly revered "upanishads",etc
2 . science domain - contribution of '0'. who else in the world first predicted it.
3.Art - magnificent Gandhara and madhura art forms, even British subjects when they came to india wondered about it..you can't find anywhere else in the ancient era the first essence of urbanization as MOHENJO DARO &HARAPPAN civilization
4. technological sphere- the first ever country to successfully conquered to reach Mars through mars orbiter mission (mom)..With indigenous technology only also with low cost budget
5. diplomatic sphere - influence in world trade organisation, pivot to asia, considerable say in the unsc etc,...
even more ,...I am not supporting india but to say that we can't disrespect anyone..give respect and take respect..there are so many hings to write , considering the limitations.Thank you very much
+MrTryAnotherOne why is it important when the first life originated? why is it important when the first homosapien came out? why is it important when exactly Big bang actually happened? why is it important to study when actually global warming started? ....dear friend , I am not against your question and I shall say this world is bound by the principles of CAUSE AND EFFECT. ..in every field..There are thousands of languages , numerous scripts, so also the dialects. so studies are around which perhaps the oldest language. It leads to the connections and diversity, it is completely no materialistic one... like wise there must be some connections between these art forms with some other..greater example you can take about classical dances of india and its influences. good luck. Thank you.

In Japan there is a 3000 year old recorded history of an art of unarmed and armed combat called " SHORINJI ", ' The God of War ', very secretly preserved. All kicks, punches and blocks (Geri, Soki and Uke) with absolute proper practical striking (Uchii) applications of limbs are already there in that art completely since then, which are taught in all martial arts with different names world over till date. And also in this art, is the art of weapons fighting with long blades (swords) like Katana etc and also uses of other weapons. Bodhi Dharma the monk from India is said to have taken some exercises to Shaolin Temple only in the 17th century. Please investigate this to gain further knowledge to people.
First of 17 century is definitely wrong bodhidharma literally traveled to chins in fifth century.Get this lie out of here.

***** But those forms do not survive today. This has survived for so long. India has survived for so long. :)
***** As far as I know not only the moves but also other things that make this art form.
It is not surprising if Yoga can be survive. I cannot see the reason why can't this.
*****
"if you take a look at karate, wrestling, boxing etc they have all mutated dramatically" I have thought long on this and the reason is Anglo Saxon's marketising and branding of everythimg.
From Kerala... Land of Kalarippayattu... and I am proud of Kalari
being able to defend from any attack with any weapon at any angle sounds useful, however, the prerequisite of having a right topsoil and a deity watching over you for that to work is kind of a hassle.
It must be continued and encouraged so as to spread in whole world including our India
Sadly this is nearing extinction
Spectacular! Amazing to know this is the origin of Kung Fu and then Karate, Taekwondo.
Because karate and Taekwondo itself came from one part of Chinese kung fu. A large number of Chinese people moved to Japan and the Korean Peninsula because of expanding territory and war escape more than 2000 years ago.Chinese kung fu appears locally (there are Chinese characters. Chinese architecture, Chinese culture, etc.). Local indigenous people also accepted some of Chinese culture.
