Sorry to hear about your mom Russ, looking after our moms in their golden years is really one of the great joys in life, after the years they put in caring for us! My main peeve about the latest sims is you can't save a flight, like with Microsoft of old. Then you just hit the save button, and picked up right where you left off. Now, the various "save" mechanisms really don't do the job, and it's really hard to learn anything, or complete a flight.

I agree that around and on the airport X-Plane is great but otherwise the scenery in MSFS is a lot more accurate representation of the real world. X-Plane is still the best for serious flight training. MSFS is way too dependent on the internet.

  • @paulhadley9047

I always appreciate your vidver down eos and experience Russ. As far as I know a huge amount of scenery is synthetically generated from airplane or satellite photos. That explains why things end up in the wrong place or out of scale.
I flew FS24 over Vancouver and found a tree as tall as a skyscraper. As a retired developer I think the trees are scaled about 20% taller than the building. That's fine for 1 or 2 storey houses....but not for 50 floor buildings.
I found the hand-made airports (most of the major airports) look really good, as nothing is generated automatically from photos. So unfortunately our smaller airports have these annoying features.
Regarding voting for bugs I think is crazy. A bug is a bug and needs to be fixed regardless.

This has always been a reality buster. The cars driving underwater with missing bridges has never been fixed either. Now that 2024 is basically a bug ridden XBox arcade game, I don’t expect any of it to get fixed. I think our best hope would be XP getting their act together when it comes to making the earth look like some semblance of reality but not gonna hold my breath on that either. I think MSFS 2020 will remain on my PC for years to come unless they find a way to turn this thing around.

Russ - you may be the only one who cares about the lights / signs in the taxiway at THAT airport, but you are not the only one who cares about it in the game in general. Another thing I noticed in 2020 at several airports (no idea if this is fixed in 2024 as I didn't pre-buy it, and will not until it's in better shape) is that taxiway names (labels?) in game does not always match what is on the charts for some major airports. I was trying to do VATSIM at KPIT and the controller was telling me taxi via ABC (or whatever it was) but the signs didn't match what they were telling me.

Spend time with your mom while you can.
I specifically scheduled shoulder replacement surgery a few days before 2024 launch just so I would not be disappointed in the inevitable launch bugs and give them time to work at least so of this stuff out.
Like you, the lights and especially vehicles on taxiways really bugged me in 2020. Its a bummer they are still with us, but at least there are third party developers that will be happy to sell us a fix again.

    @Fadamor 2 дня назад

1:32 I'd normally just attribute it to the Autogen module trying to decipher photogrammetry data when generating airports. Autogen will also randomly assign taxiways, then attempt to populate the taxiway signs on the airport grounds. But the sign in front of you is an anomaly even taking into account the "normal" screw-ups Autogen creates. Airports - in general - stick with one size of taxiway sign and base it on the size of the aircraft likely to be using it. An airport dealing with A380s or Dreamliners is going to have larger taxiway signs simply because the pilots needing to read them are farther away from them when sitting in the cockpit.
The FAA identifies five different sizes for taxiway signs and the MSFS SDKs for 2020 and 2024 do a pretty good job of following those sizes. The sign parked in the middle of your taxiway is obviously one intended for very large airports and the Autogen should have ruled it out immediately.
I started working on a scenery mod for MSFS 2020 for my home airport (KHEF) because of these exact same problems: taxiway lights that followed the taxiway centerline even though there was a run-up area that planes needed to access; T-hangars three-stories in height despite the accurate photogrammetry height data available; etc. When 2024 came out, the first thing I checked was whether anything was improved at my home airport. The ONLY thing that changed was the default image used for the terrain. The same Autogen issues that plagued the 2020-version of KHEF plagued the 2024 version.

Russ, my wife and I looked after three of our respective parents and, from hindsight, one thing I would now do is organise weekly Vitamin B12 injections. Many people over 60 will be become deficient, as their digestive system gradually struggles to absorb enough via diet alone. B12 is absolutely crucial to things like DNA synthesis and nerve health, so a deficiency can impact almost all systems, from brain to heart and also the autonomic system. This should not be costly, but may improve your Mum's health and outlook. That and cut out sugar and Seed Oils!

I love the look of the airports in x-Plane 12, everything is where it should be and even the VASIS line up with the ILS glide slope. I remember you complaining about these taxiway obstructions before. Also I remember you not being impressed with their "career mode" aspirations saying they seem to have left serious sim enthusiasts on the sidelines. I didn't really get it then as personally I liked the idea of having a purpose in flight sim rather than just aimlessly flying around *pretending* you were doing something. But given that entire mode is broken and it feels like they've focused more on the XBOX arcade crowd rather than really enhancing the proper sim aspects, I concede that you were right about your concerns. Frankly I'm surprised you got it at all. I saw so much criticism in general I just decided to stay out of the fray till they get their ducks in a row. Sorry about your mom by the way, getting old is tough business. I've seen the older generation departing and that process is really forlorn have to say.

That's impressive indeed, BUT: to not place any trees or lights on runways you don't even need more 'intelligence' than a simply instruction like this: 'if runway = true then no obstackles, please'. Maybe they forgot the 'please' and the AI was pissed that they were so rude.

    1. All buildings are homes, not hangers, even if there are taxi ways next to them.
    2. All beacons are the same huge structure, in the middle of the airport.
    3. All airports have huge taxi signs and lights, and fuel depots.

They haven't even got the basics right, like terminal buildings being there when you land, or sinking into the taxi-way at EDDM, along with 1,000 other problems. It's going to take over a year to fix all the bugs. I would have thought the STARTING POINT would be the FS 2020 standard we have now, with improvements on that, but not a chance. It is so bad I got a refund. I won't pay to be their beta tester. What you're observing is the X-boxification of MSFS. It's a game, not a simulator. I basically never use default airports because 1) they're nearly always rubbish and 2) there's no realistic chance that they'll ever be that good when theres 10s of thousands of them. Just buy addons for the airports you like and if you cant afford to, then....well you're gonna get issues like this. Its annoying i know, but i don't think its going to change.

Democracy is the dictatorship of the majority, that’s how it works. The comment: “May be I am the only one that is bothered about this, because I am a pilot and many are not and probably care less” is condescending, as it implies that folks that do not have a license really do not know what is important in a sim and Microsoft should fix issues that folks with a license find important.

Not what I meant but I see how you could have heard it that way. Lots of casual gamers start on the runway and end on the runway after landing. Taxiing seems pretty uneventful. Having spent a career trying to avoid hitting objects on the ramp it may seem more critical to me. I have to assume many are not bothered running over objects since I have never seen it anywhere up high on the list of items users have requested en masse to fix. I would hope my long career in GA, military, and airline flying gives me some small advantage in judging realism. Thanks for your comment and I will try to word things differently going forward.

"There's just no excuse for this." Well, you are a seasoned pilot and that is very cool. I am a seasoned software engineer. If most people had any clue as to the complexity of this type of project, they wouldn't say things like this. Hand placing and constantly updating hundreds of thousands (or millions) or objects is a literally-impossible task, so this type of work must be mostly automated. It also relies on large databases which may or may not have accurate information. It is not possible to account for every single scenario when writing rules for automation. It is also HIGHLY unlikely (probably impossible) for every single engineer on a project of this scale to write bug-free code.
Imagine people on your flights saying "there's just no excuse for this" because of actions you or your employer had taken; or maybe even because of something outside of your control. What would your response be?
To be clear, I am NOT giving them a pass for the abysmal state of the sim during launch. I played in the beta a month prior and it was clear to me that all of the bugs wouldn't be ironed out in time. This item will be addressed, but it isn't the end of the world.
