    • @jimflan1712
      @jimflan1712 Месяц назад +22

I remember those times pretty well. It was my impression at the time (before Shankly resigned) that Bill had done a brilliant job in putting Liverpool to the top tier in domestic footy in England, but the team was making no progress in European footy and was continually caught short by the continental teams. I was a shocked as anyone else by Shank’s resignation. But i remember watching Bob Paisley’s teams in European games and being amazed at how quickly he had turned us into a ‘continental team’ - suddenly it was us catching teams on the break, amd it was us pulling balls back across the box (instead of crossing) for a midfielder or even defender to bury in the net, and it was us spoiling and wasting time. - we outdid them at their own game, and it was fantastic to see. He seemed to take domination of the domestic game as well as almost an inevitable add-on.
So, as much as we all love Jurgen, please do not underestimate what a new guy can do with fresh ideas and an already quality squad to work with. The boot room process proved, even back then, that the right process and structure could provide sustainable success even across multiple managerial changes. Michael Edwards is probably the most capable bloke I can think of to put in place such processes and structure to repeat that. Exciting times ahead I think !

Liverpool's entire playing staff from the academy to the first team are used to the 4-3-3 with high press attacking football.
Alonso and Amorim did not suit that style, both preferring a back-3.
Alonso, for all his professed love for Liverpool, DID NOT WANT the job!
So then, the most logical move would be for Arne Slot, who ticks all the boxes:
    - good man-management
    - 4-3-3
    - High press and good defence (even better than Liverpool)
    - Attacking football
    - develops players
    - promotes youth
    - charismatic
    - good with the media
    - represents the club well
    - not asking crazy amounts of money
    - wants to join Liverpool FC

Alonso succeeded because of his tactic (4-3-2-1) or (3-4-2-1), his accurate instruction that his players are disciplined, do not keep dribbling the ball more than it should be, and the high pressure on contenders!
We do press on contenders, but with negative pressure (pass the ball from left to right and from right to left), slow in building up an attack, inaccurate in passes, hiding behind contender's defenders waiting for the ball! and very slow to cover back when the counter-attack against us. All contenders knew the tactic. That's why we stumbled many times and lost many finals!

Klopp is obviously a great guy and human being and he always says the right things. People are right to love him. But his playing style is frustrating. His teams have always lacked strong midfields and especially goals from midfield. The midfield has always been the lowest priority for Klopp when it comes to transfers. We rarely work the ball through the midfield. It's always up either side or over the top after 2 minutes of Van Dijk and Allison passing the ball back and forth to each other. The best penetrating runs through the center are usually from Joel Matip. And, midfielders that like to score goals don't seem to want to play for him. It's why Coutinho, and Wijnaldum and Emre Can left and perhaps why Bellingham signed for Real Madrid. Mac Allister was played out of position much of the season. Szoboszlai has regressed after his impressive start. How many times has Elliot had a wide open shot on goal and chosen to force a pass into Salah or someone else instead?

Look at Slot cv he’s clearly a good manager to be level on points with Ajax at AZ before leave got cancelled is crazy comparing both clubs. (AZ highest ever points total that season btw) then to take over a Feyenoord team that was struggling with a defensive manager to win the league is great. Slot is the next manager to potentially become great there is a reason why Leeds and Spurs both had Slot as their number one choice but Slot backed himself that a bigger club would come calling. Side note apparently Slot is good mates with Pep Lijnders

He'd been a loyal and dependable player for us , then worked his way up , after retirement as a player , to eventually helping Shanks as his No2 . I fully back Slot because Michael Edwards is involved, but one of my biggest concerns is that Slot plays high intensity football as well and I’ve seen these Liverpool sides fall at the last hurdle of this intensity model towards the end of the season and with fixtures piling up every year I’m just concerned the current squad won’t want to do it for Slot like they did for Klopp.

Whilst Pep is different to Jurgen in character, their tactics are both the same, as is the result of working together for such an extended period. I just think the seamlessness of keeping the same tactic would also be the biggest issue; teams would be pretty comfortable that we are going to be the same and could do the same things they have for years to counter it.

Heads up I'm an Everton fan...
That out of the way, just to say Arne Slot was previously manager of Az Alkmaar, where he took them to their highest finish in the league. He took a woeful Feyenoord that were struggling and won the double with them, and he does have European experience. He took them to the UEFA conference final. They only lost on penalties to Mourinho's much more expensively assembled Roma side.
Not here to have a pop or endorse, just offering some context. He was also on the short lists of Bayern and Barca at differing points. He plays 4-3-3 high press, so would guess the club are looking for continuity.

I've said many times in recent years, particularly 2018 to 2022 that we are living the best of times. Make the most of it because nothing lasts forever and one day it'll be over. In recent weeks the realisation is setting in that the era is coming to an end. Klopp is more than a football manager. I remember the day his appointment was confirmed and I immediately knew it was going to work. That is incredibly rare in life generally. So yes broadly I agree he cannot be 'replaced' and it would be ridiculous to try, but life goes on and the club will find another way as it has done many times in the past. I thought Klopp would stay until 2026 - which was his contract extension - then call it a day, so the chances are people like Xabi and Amorim also thought the job wouldn't come up until 2026, so it's come too early for them. Imagine if Alonso wins another Bundesliga and maybe a European trophy in the next two seasons, he'd have a CV similar to when Rafa Benitez came in 2004. I feel most for the younger supporters - I'm 35 so my memories start around Roy Evans era, in other words I clearly remember Liverpool being fairly crap at times. If you're much under 20 you don't know anything other than Klopp, you probably don't remember Hodgson (lucky bastards) and those fans are in for quite the shock, whereas I know it's possible that we drop down into the 'Champions League chasers' group of clubs (at best) or bounce between 4th and 8th like we did before Jurgen. Hopefully we do better than that - I do think the structure at the club is different to United or Arsenal for instance when they really struggled after Ferguson/Wenger left, because they were the last old fashioned managers who controlled the entire club. FSG obviously feel it's more important to get their old Edwards structure back in place - and it's also obvious Edwards must've left due to differences with Klopp and a popularity contest he'd never win. The fact is though since Edwards left, we have gone a bit wobbly in terms of transfers etc and generally how we do business. I suppose what i'm getting at is even Jurgen Klopp doesn't get everything right, in some ways it's good that we end the season 3rd with a good run in the league and the Carabao Cup because it gives Slot scope to make things better - he's got a lot to work with but there's also areas he might be able to improve.

Hey, my 2 cents here: i think you maybe are viewing this a tad too sentimental and romantically. I belong to the probably more cold/sober and boring crowd of Liverpool fans that measure team, coach and players on obtained results. Therefore I believe the other and more romantic/sentimental Liverpool fans have been somewhat too much charmed by Klopp's overall likeability and neglected to look at his overall results in a more analytic manner. Here is the verdict. He has been here 9 seasons. He has won 3 major silverware and these within the matter of 3 back to back seasons. 2018/19 He won the Champions League. 2019/20 He won the Premier League and 2020/21 he won the FA Cup. I don't consider the EFL cup, Super Cup, Community Shield and the Club World Cup as high ranking achievements as the above mentioned to be included. In addition to this there has been 3 "near misses" in Klopp's time as manager. Also called runner-up results. After loosing Mane and Firmino Liverpool's firepower had never really returned in the same way. I believe this season choosing Nunez and Gakpo over Jota as a third fiddle alongside Diaz and Salah has been a huge mistake made by Klopp and is part of the reason why the team have failed winning important games at the end of the season. He never really gave neither Solanke or Carvalho a proper chance to prove their worth by just giving them 5 minutes here and there and thus wasting their time and talent and have missed out on skilled firepower they now both properly have proved they are in possession of. Arne Slot's style of (and also typical for Dutch) football looks really promising and fun to watch, but at the same time i can see several players like for instance Matip, Robertson and Jones would struggle with this fast forward moving one-touch tiki-taka style of football, maybe even Endo. I think Arne Slot might be highly underrated and a potential gem in the making that would deserve such an upgrade, given he is given resources to strengthen the team with players that fits his style of playing football.

      Spot on!!!
Klopp is a romantic & a spin meister, a bit like shanks, he's never been a serial winner and lost far more than he has won with us.
      Seville
      Real Madrid
4 run ins, where we dropped points, when we shouldn't.
We need a Bob Paisley, a true winner and a manager who got rid of players, just as they were passing their peak, not offering them huge contracts and Bob would never hold on to players who were constantly injured!!!

The club is much more important than any one individual.
LFC has never been a one man show and never will be.
Players / Managers will come and go but life goes on.

Klopp the best manager in the world? Have I been watching a different team the past few years? They've consistently been making the same mistakes for several years now. Never seen a manager seemingly so immune to criticism.

Yeah, klopp doesn’t deserve the level of praise he gets. He’s no shankly or paisley and he is a serial choker in cup finals

Good to see that at least a minority of our fans aren't blinkered.
He's been rubbish since we won the league and even then we stumbled over the winning line, which is a typical Klopp run in 😡
