Hey lost boy-you got a black leather biker jacket to go with that Brando Cap? I do. Kewl tip on washing a wool cap. I have some wool things like scarves & so forth that I bought a Dryel kit @ the grocery for that works great. It comes with a big plastic sealable bag & you put the items in there with the included cleaning sheet that's like a softener sheet & put it in the dryer for a time. It comes out clean & fresh. This only works for things that aren't filthy just need to get body oils etc. off so moths won't bother the clothing in storage during the off season. 👍☮️🌞🎸🚴🕎🎄
Thank you!!! I have a blk MC jacket covered in studs and spikes, back in the mid 80’s,I went to London and picked up a ton of those biker jacket studs , some of them are little skulls, I used red nail polish and made their eyes red, too, it’s covered in them, so it’s heavy and not that comfortable w the spikes,u can feel the little prongs on the inside, kinda poking u.. I’d love to trade it for just a worn out, beat up..plain,blk MC jacket. Mi tried removing them, there’s little holes everywhere..sux. It lays in my closet, I used to wear it to,work like once a year to freak folks out.. thanks for the tip w the washy thing..
Wash wool only in cold water and "Woollite" because warm water will insure shrinking the wool. Been washing wool items for 48 years. Shaping is important especially woven wool Lie flat if you want it sharp looking.. I've seen some really damaged woolen hats in used clothing stores
Probably best. I’ve used warm water, I think..water that wasn’t too hot for my hands, but I usually wash mostly the sweatband, and the lining sometimes..that’s why I separate the lining from the rest.. I rarely wash the fabric itself, my caps never get THAT dirty.. but you are right, cold is probably safer for delicate things and wool. Thank you for the heads up!
I am a Spitfire girl. I have a few. My best one is 22 years old and is filled with love!! I bought 2 new caps but they need a bigger head than mine to stretch the rim for me.
They’re fairly easy to stretch, steam the back seam until it’s nice and hot, then pull it over your knee firmly, yet slowly, increasing pressure.. if you feel or hear a little pop, it’s stretched to the max, and stop. it might work..
Kevin - I have fallen in love with your channel and all the tips/suggestions. Thank you! On JJ’s website it doesn’t specify cardboard or plastic “bills”. This would be a great help. Also looking for an Irish cap. Do you do virtual consultations on any of the meeting sites? Skype....etc? I am looking for a summer newsboy and need your personal help. Thanks and keep em coming!
U can send photos and your basic requirements to info@jjhatcenter.com Put "attn Kevin" in the subject line. I'll try my best. Only a couple of caps use plastic bills. Jonathan Richard 'Tully" and "The Gatsby" By hannah hats..both irish newsboys.. 99% of the cap makers use a wax covered cardboard..only those two models use plastic.
great video! a couple questions - how would you compare the jj newsboy and jj gatsby, size-wise? is the wool material OK for spring-type weather as well?
Good question. The width is similar, but the Irish one is very bulky, very thick, warm, wooly, like those thick Irish sweaters? It has pleats on the top and looks very authentic, it’s warm as hell, and it’ll last you so many years, you’ll have it forever..I see old Irish guys in my building wearing them, it’s the real deal. The other hat,the JJ newsboy is thinner, it’s an all year weight.. not for hot, summer rock festivals, where you’re pouring water over yourself, and it’s 96 degrees in the shade, but it’s as light as a non summer hat can get. It feels just right for spring, or for all year long. The JJ newsboy runs the tiniest bit tight, and the Irish cap runs more true to size. (The Tully by J Richards is similar to the Gatsby, but it does runs larger, and its even thicker yet) ...the Tully would be the third cap that’s in that width, it’s very thick, maybe the bulkiest cap on the market.and it runs large.
@@KTGHATS I also don’t see a lot of newsboys where I live in the Pittsburgh area. Guys usually wear ivy caps, so when I wear a news boy it gets noticed.
Kevin, Merry X Mas! Begone 2020! Talking of caps, I've picked up many flat caps over the years some of which are seem to be blocked from felt. How does one classify those?
We call those "molded caps" or "ascots" also heard then called a "Cuffley cap", "Eton" and a "Kangol" because Kangol made many of them in the 80's-90's. U can actually fold those, the same way I told an ivy cap. Fold the Peak under.. But in a sense, the soft caps u see today are "pocket caps" and those molded felt caps are just "Caps", but not a "pocket cap"
@@KTGHATS Thank you 😊 Kevin. And wishing you a very happy new year. Hope to see you back on 5th Avenue soon. The year despite how terrible it has been is now history. For me tuning into your videos has been educational and entertaining. Maybe I’ll request a song one of these days 😁 In the process I’ve increased my hat collection this year by 6 despite the limitations of the lockdown! Let’s hope one can step out do some real time shopping in 2021. Cheers 🍻
I like newsies ... I’m slender and 6’6” and don’t seem to suit Ivys at all. Mind you I haven’t tried the wider Ivys. I also love fiddlers. :) I need to try an authentic Greek Fisherman. :)
We sell the Greek in wool or cotton, the fiddler is the same cap without the embroidery and the ornamental rope in front,if u like the fiddler, you’ll like the Greek too, same shape.
Mentioned in a previous video how I favour fabric covered leather peaks. Curious to know if this was in fact the standard way of making flat caps during the early 20th century.
I couldn’t tell you, I’m not really an authority on vintage and historical hats, I’d assume they would use either paper or leather, it makes sense. These days it’s mostly cardboard, or synthetic, foams,plastics..
@@KTGHATS Thanks Kevin. Sometimes - as in all modern items - I wonder just how much is saved by cutting corners. The leather for a peak that's never going to be seen, wouldn't have to be of such high quality. Is that extra dollar saved really worth it. Why not build them properly and just tag on an extra dollar or two.
That is a replica of the hat Marlon Brando wore in an old motorcycle film, there are a lot of caps at JJ Hat Center that look similar, but nothing exactly like this, it’s unique.. it was about a $250 cap 15-20 years ago, it’s French and very heavy suede, We have a lot of hats similar it in wool, but nothing exactly like it. it’s unique, I’ve never seen one just like it since, www.jjhatcenter.com/collections/newsboy-caps
I've covered the cap types in a few older videos, "Newsboys and flat caps, the basics" is one, but your idea is great,I'll try to prepare a video like that, I have a few others planned first, but it's a good idea.
Made in China mostly.. vs Italy, Ireland or Scotland.. Fabrics will be very different, real wool, handwoven Harris tweeds from Scotland etc.. and the styling is nicer.. the made in China ones never look right, it's all about designing.. and cheap fabrics just shrink up or down last long w it rain etc
For felt dress hats I like Akubra, Selentino,Magill.. for westerns I like Stetson. I’m not a fan of the open road, but the full-out westerns are amazingly strong. For caps I like Stetson, Jonathan Richards,Hannah,Citysport,Alfonso d’este, for straws I like Tesi, Capas Headwear,Stetson Hemp stuff & Stetson western straws
@@KTGHATS what don't you like about the Stetson open road? You've mentioned them several times in your videos. I have a straw and silverbelly. The felt is thinner than most westerns but still pretty solid. The open road is still a really popular hat here in Texas.
They’ve made numerous changes to the hat’s felt in the last couple of years. Pretty sure you’re basing your opinion on an older specimen, am I correct?
@@KTGHATS I bought the open road silverbelly 6x this year. Not sure how long the hat was in the shop. They tend to have a lot of new old stock at this shop, so it's possible that it's been there for years. Doesn't matter much to me, I just like the shape. Merry Christmas, Kevin ☃️

Kev, Never considered news boys until I watched your videos. Now I own a couple and love them. They look much better on me than flat caps do. 👍🏼
That's pretty common usually a man is either a newsboy cap or Ivy cap wearer, very few people wear both
