      @julien mihawk I didn't feel I needed to explain experience and skill to you, since he's a boxer with obvious experience and skill. These men are in two different weight classes first off, so if a trained boxer were to get a good hit off, the smaller man wouldn't take it well... Wing Chun is great and so is Kung Fu, but this is a mismatch, and irl, you would see that.

      I think the point is that if a boxer like that one landed hits like the ones that were landed, Ip would have been out cold. it's not like a "Ip couldn't beat a real boxer" comment. It's that if the fight went as it did, those hits would have been devastating.

    • @james_ford86
      @james_ford86 Год назад +58

      The fight between Master Hung and Twister was a fair and honorable fight, up until Twister kept going after the fight was clearly over and killed him. No one forced Master Hung to step into the ring with Twister. Hung was a grown-@$$ man who made his own decisions. He would not have gotten into the fight if he didn't think he could beat Twister. Twister didn't pull any dirty tricks during the actual fight. He fought Hung straight up, even if he was a bit more aggressive than he normally would be in a random exhibition match.
      Hung would have lost, and did lose, that fight fair and square due to his old age and poor health sapping his stamina. He never should have gotten in the ring, but that's not Twister's fault, no matter what the latter fighter said about "chinese martial arts." I blame Twister for going overboard and killing the guy, but I find it hard to fault anything he did during the actual fight (not counting the end).
      Hung's death can be blamed on three things: 1. A younger, more physically fit and healthy fighter going overboard and beating him too much after the fight was clearly over. 2. Hung's age and health. 3. Hung's pride and foolishness. He should have known he wouldn't stand a chance in his condition, and his hubris got him killed.

      Something similar happened in the 1st IP Man movie.
      No one forced Master Liu to go up against 3 men. He asked for it.
      General Miura probably would have let him live and leave but Sato killed him which feels dishonorable to General Miura.
      Similar to Master Hung, there were 3 things that can be blamed on Master Liu's death.
      1. His Pride.
      2. Overconfidence. He was already exhausted after fighting 1 man. What made him think he could take on 3 more? Maybe after having a good rest. Maybe.
      3. Sato with no honor.

      @@user-fg9oy3uo3h Honestly, I felt that Liu had already earned the bag of rice that he tried to take when he beat the first man. This was rice already owed to him. He fought the other three fighters in an effort to win three more bags. He didn't win, and didn't get the three more bags, but that didn't mean he still didn't get the bag he'd earned earlier.
      I thought Sato shooting him was a dick move, as Liu didn't take anything he didn't already earn. I believe that, along with Sato acting without Muira's orders, was why Muira was so upset with Sato.

    One thing I love about this fight is how accurately it portrays absolutely mastered Eastern Martial Arts against "just really good" Western martial arts. Man strikes Twister like 20x more than Twister hits Man, but Man just *doesn't* have the physical strength necessary to take down someone who is both a palace of muscle and has mastered taking much more powerful hits until he breaks him down until he's able to land countless consecutive punches directly on his face. It visibly took SO MUCH for Man to win this fight. Anyone even *slightly* worse than Ip Man wouldn't be able to do it. And that's just the kind of thing you see in actual East VS West fights. The Eastern fighter is firing off machine gun blows which just bounce off of the boxer/MMA guy, but the boxer/MMA guy just throws a punch with power that nobody in Eastern martial arts has ever encountered and they just eat it.
    Fuckin' love this fight.

    • @BigG344
      @BigG344 Год назад +10

      I've been fighting for 15 years (MMA). This Kung Fu style is almost useless in an actual fight. There have been so many of these "Masters" who walked into my gym thinking they are the best in the room but got their lights knocked out. I'm not putting these styles down as they are absolutely impressive to watch in shows and demonstrations, but in a real fight against an actual MMA fighter or Boxer, they do almost nothing.

    • @bbillyk
      @bbillyk Год назад +2

      @@BigG344 Yeah that's sorta what I meant. On the street, Ip Man lost this fight instantly. The only reason he even got a chance is because Twister had to stop when Man was down. In a real fight or in MMA he would have just jumped on him and finished it.
      The rules of Boxing, combined with the fact that old-timey Boxers were nowhere near as developed as modern or semi-modern Boxers, also combined with the fact that Ip Man (at least within the lore of the movies) is literally THE best martial artist of any Eastern style while Twister is a random amateur who runs around picking on tiny Chinamen, means that what occurred wasn't outside the realm of possibility *at the time.*
      That said, the third movie sort of ruined it by having Ip Man withstand a few punches from Mike Fucking Tyson. That just is not happening and there is no explaining it away. If they had to bring Tyson in for a fight, they should have had Ip Man dodge every single swing of his and not even bother attacking throughout the three minutes. Like a live-action Ultra Instinct scene. But then it wouldn't be an actual fight, so why bring in Tyson? I personally think it was bad writing and should have just not happened but if it had to happen I understand why it happened the way that it did, rule of cool and all that.
      Can also be said that Frank, Tyson's character, is just way slower and worse than the actual Mike Tyson, but god damnit if I see Mike Fucking Tyson I want to imagine he's as good as Mike Fucking Tyson no matter what is going on.

Twister has the fastest speed, best techniques, best footworks and brute force since he is an expert sportsman in the ring. While gunnery sergeant is a career soldier where his primary skills would be marksmanship(Every Marine is a Riflemen) and squad based tactics in gunfights(Go watch "Battle : LA", then you know what I mean), in unarmed fights he only has brute force but no speed and techniques, that's why he got smashed easily by Ip Man in the end.

He does some other nasty close up Wing Chung shit but it goes so fast it’s amazing. He’s like, “you don’t want me to use my legs? wait till you see me use my hands, you didn’t say I couldn’t.”

No boxer with gloves on is going to get 12 inches from a master wing Chung practitioner who is dedicated his entire life to picking up fast twitch muscle responses making it impossible to land any hands on them. In real life a wing Chung practitioner would absolutely destroy a boxer because wing Chung is specifically made to counter close range street fight specifically boxing. This made this all the more ridiculous in this movie the first time I saw this I laughed hysterically. A boxer with gloves on literally able to even land one punch on a person who spent his entire life developing a system to make sure no one can land a hand on him and having one of the greatest wing chun artists in history getting hit over and over by a Street fighter. After watching every single Ip Man movie multiple times throughout the years and now just rewatching this scene I realized this was actually his toughest opponent in the entire series.
    Ipman 1 - Defeats the Japanese Karate dude with not much struggle. (Ipman wasnt just fighting that one commander but the entirety of the unwanted occupation his people were going through)
    Ipman 2 - He fights the Twister & TBH he gets wrecked and some can argue that technically he shouldve lost but got saved by the bell. The boxer was also the only "villain/opponent" he fought that only used his hands during the fight. It seemed Ip Man turned things around when he was told he cant use kicks too..
    Ipman 3 - He fights the other Wing Chun Master. I don't even consider the opponent as a villain because he really wasn't. He only challenged Ipman to a duel so he can provide a better life for his son by wanting his academy to be respected as number one. I actually even consider them to be friends and highly respect each other but of course now the media intensifies the duel. But yeah Ipman does have some mild struggle with the opponent but eventually wins/loses, whichever way you want to look at it. (He does win his honor & respect tho).
    Ipman 4 - The badass Karate Marine... YES it was a badass fight between the American & a terminally ill Ipman. Not only is IpMan literally dying from cancer, but he was also WAAAY past his prime. So many would think oh yeah this was Ipmans toughest opponent but nah if you think about it, maybe if they fought in the earlier movies when ipman was healthy and young, he couldve finished the karate guy easier.
    Twister was his toughest challenge. IMO

And if we are being honest, in no other fight he endured so much punishment to the point where he should be dead despite being his best defense wise especially after he got smacked to the ground and kicked 3 times this is basically KO by any means but yeah plot. He got kicked to his ripcage like 8 times clean and even one kick on the side of his head + knee directly in his face and kicks are stronger than punches. A younger healthy IP man with less patience and ever so slightly worse defense technique would open even more openings.

      @@derplololol9717 No worries man! “Could have” stress the objective potential of the action, that it Could happen, while “Should have” stress the subjective opinion of the speaker toward the action, that I think it Should happen. 👌

    mans fighting with bare hands against someone with gloves, idk which one hurts more (for the opponent) but I'd think bare hands do

    I always thought it would be cool to see this kind of thing more often. Instead of the commonplace MMA fighting styles we see in many things now, more of this actual cross-discipline combat, where each person isn't just versed in a mish-mash of stuff, but rather represents a dedicated focus to one particular type of combat. Gives off some pretty strong Street Fighter vibes, like Fei Long fighting Balrog maybe.

      Early ufc was a lot like this.

      Yes early ufc was style vs style in the beginning. Then jujitsu kind of owned everything one Joyce Gracie Cana along. Then people mixed the style to be better fighters.

      @@phonedork Well, better fighters is arguable. In the end most UFC fighters end up with basically similar styles to all the others, the whole thing got way too homogenized. Which makes sense, to some degree, as the way they fight now is essentially in a rounded-manner, which probably provides the best changes for winning. Still, I'd really enjoy seeing a fight league with true cross-discipline combat. Would be very interesting to see wildly different fighting styles come to blows. Like Capoeira vs Boxing, or a true competitive Wrestler vs a Tae Kwon Do specialist. That kind of thing would be highly entertaining.

      @@Astraeus.. better fighters is not arguable, your either winning or not. Style vs style like wrestler vs karate/ Kwon do = wrestler taking him down at ease. He then cannot kick or punch. Thats when the karate guy learns wrestling to stop the take down and forces wrestler to stand with him….Thus mix martial arts. I don’t know why people who idolize movie fights and hate mma. One style will not win them all. It’s like paper, rock, scissors… learning them all and mixing them makes you a better fighter
