Baldwin gives comments on the education system, public education, education as it pertains to Black children, and education within racist institutions.
@@7102cc Who is there? All I know in this modern society are the celebrities elected as spokemen of justice and misdeeds. Celebrities have taken the place of the intellectuals. The world has gotten simpler, more pocketable and dumber. I don't know who is there that genuinely speaks a truth or is educated to convey good points to the mass
I'm glad James spoke to the dual consciousness Blacks in academia and in life in general have to balance. He called it schizophrenia. Him suggesting that the focus of Black intellectuals should be on gathering the tools necessary to educate themselves, because every American school is racist is the best advice Black people can learn from. We will never get an education about ourselves from the traditional education system. That is a task we must set fourth to do for ourselves. We must also not marginalize our history and it's importance when faced with criticism from Blacks and other forms of western criticism.
Well some. The will of Black people who strive for higher learning must always be set on the highest bar in fear of societal persecution once a certain level of consciousness is obtained.
This is very true but blacks don't trust each other enough to collaborate. It would take one powerful man to make that move. With the boule, it's not likely to happen. Look what BET gave us. Thanks for watching! i cut out this selection, along with another, from a longer Q&A with Baldwin at UC Berkeley in 1974. The full thing can be found on youtube in two parts, but i thought a few of these clips so important, prescient and relevant that i wanted them to be more accessible.
Cornel west spoke on this in his book Race Matters, this nihilistic threat black peoples face due to horrific subjugation brought on by corporate interest turning people into objects of profit and consumption
His point about changing the education system costing more money for less profit rings true to this day. In a world where anyone can learn whatever they want whenever they want with the internet, the fact that schools are still designed around the industrial revolution where everyone worked at a factory is asinine. Children learning from home during the pandemic should be the wake up call to change something, but I doubt anything will happen for at least another 20 years.
Mr. Baldwin is still relevant and we need to make sure we go back and consider what he said. Anyone know what school they were at and year this was recorded?
Where did I say that I, personally, would single-handedly fix the public education system in this country. I am just one citizen, change takes the action of millions, and takes many years to accomplish. There are many factors at play here, but my argument stands that getting rid of the system completely is not a viable solution.

These are the type of men who should be making policy in America , I would bet money that President Trump or Biden for that matter would not be able to answer basic math questions ,or give a dissertation on Judicial law.
In the meantime, I would like you to point out one example, one country, just one, that removed their public education system and became a leader in education. Just one example will do. So far, the only country in the world to completely dismantle their public education system has been Cambodia under Pol Pot.
This was taking in 1964 and nothing much has changed 2020 ....its time to change America 🇺🇸 you can get a University education in Canada 🇨🇦...its much cheaper and better quality.
A better solution would be to make the school systems work, like in every other major industrialized country in the world. I think he meant that by going through the education system and enduring the many challenges of the journey both as a child of any race but more so children of colour, you risk going insane and having mental problems when in America illiteracy is praised to such a heavy degree.
That's not an option for most people. You have a situation where both parents have full time jobs, you can't afford a one-income-per-household paradigm anymore, because many of the manufacturing jobs have been outsourced and people accept whatever wage they can get. Plus there are a lot of single parent households. Also, after a certain level, parents no longer have the resources necessary to teach their kids enough to be competitive in the modern world.
Consider this a entry point to a pointless debated of fate..love the presentation but that in of itrself IS AN appeal To non-consentu/all\\\ reAllity that exists for 3 years on average × 10/^2
There are flaws in a public system, of course, but there are flaws in every system. The fact that you choose not to acknowledge is that it is a hell of a lot better than nothing at all, and that if you look at the rest of the world, countries with better-funded public education systems excel academically over those that under-fund education.
My view is no more "negative" than reality. Sometimes reality can be pretty negative though. It's better than viewing the situation through rose tinted glasses. You can't improve things unless you recognize the extent of the problem. I am a little disappointed that you couldn't argue with my points and had to resort to empty, childish ad-hominems.
How many parents have the money to hire a private tutor? That's a lot of money. The same goes for the school books. Those can be insanely expensive. Also, most parents don't have the level of education themselves to teach their kids past a certain level. That's one of the problems that exist in inner city schools: the parents lack the education themselves. The schools need to be teaching kids things their parents are unable to teach them, that's the original purpose of public schools.
Prejudice? Where is the prejudice in my posts? I'm talking about reality, and the circumstances a lot of people have to deal with that make your home schooling solution unfeasible as a solution.
It has nothing to do with "faith," it has everything to do with being realistic. How is a parent who dropped out of high school going to teach their kid advanced calculus?
It is about saving a few cents, or at least the promise of such by conservative politicians. The Republican party has made a practice of promising to lower taxes by taking the axe to programs like public education, it is viewed as expendable, and not important, because after all, Abraham Lincoln didn't need any public school, just a law book, a coal oil lamp and a little spare time between splitting logs.
Library books are chosen by the individual library, not by some shadowy government organization. My mom works at a library, she knows how thing are done there, they order new books on the basis of public demand, not the dictates of some sinister official in a black suit and shades. That has its own problems, but you can't call it "censorship" and look like someone who doesn't wear a tin foil hat.
What have I said anything "hateful" about any non-Western nation? The only "non-Western nation" I mentioned was China, and as I recall, I didn't say anything "hateful" about China. I gave a realistic assessment of the class disparities during the Qing Dynasty, the memories of which are one of the reasons why the modern Chinese nation places a priority on education.
I have facts. You have airheaded theories with no evidence to back them up. All you have is flaws in the American school system due to under-funding, but nothing to back up your theory that getting rid of it entirely and telling inner-city parents who are having a hard enough time making ends meet somehow hire a private tutor as if that was in any way economically feasible. Where do you propose they get the money to hire these tutors?
How am I "talking ill" of anyone? How am I "looking down on" anyone? I was describing one of the reasons why China has a better public education system than ours. I think you completely misinterpreted my post. I have never "talked negative" of any race or nationality. I think you need to re-read my post. I was talking about how China is more honest about how things were before they had public education.
I'm going by the data which is available. Other countries are miles ahead of us in education because they actually fund their public education, and our education standards are at rock bottom because we have de-funded ours. Accusing your opposition of being brainwashed or part of a conspiracy is not an argument, it is a pathetic cop-out.
You seem to have this image of a world where parents are all educated themselves and are therefore able to educate their children to the same level, and have the free time to do so. In reality, you have parents who were themselves failed by a substandard and under-funded education system, some of whom dropped out of school, who are too busy putting food on their families' tables to spend multiple hours a day teaching their kids arithmetic that they themselves never learned.
Your pie-eyed libertarian solution fails to take into account the fact that there are children in this country for whom school lunch is the only full meal they get, because their parents are simply too poor. Many don't have jobs, not because they don't want to work, but because the jobs are simply not there, they've been outsourced to China. Of the jobs that do exist here, many don't pay a living wage. How is someone who is too destitute to keep food on the table going to hire a private tutor?
You have accused me of being brainwashed by mainstream media and "censored" library books. If that's not a conspiracy theory, what is? I have argued using logic, and you have resorted to petty insults, ad-hominems and insinuations. You accusing me of being a troll is particularly rich, seeing as you're the one who is using troll tactics here. Are you going to address the points I've made any time soon or are you just going to use more ad-hominems?
I have used logic and examples, you have chosen to ignore this because it doesn't fit with your narrow worldview. Public systems ARE good, as every industrialized First World nation can attest. Look at the nations that are leading the world in education, they have public systems, they have very good, well-funded (yes, by the government!) well-maintained public systems that give every child in their country a fair chance at a successful life.
And you are saying what your media is saying. Where do you get off with this self-righteous belief that your own media and culture are any less biased than mine? You accuse me of stereotyping while yourself subjecting me to a stereotype.
The only reason that our system is failing is that it is under-funded and poorly maintained. It is under-funded because mostly Republican politicians have made a career out of imposing budget cuts so that they can promise lower taxes and get re-elected. Have you lived in this country? Have you paid attention to what is going on here? You are speaking from a position of great remove, about a subject about which you seem to be wholly unkowledgeable.
What do you even know about this issue? You live in the Netherlands, a country whose history, infrastructure and public education system are as different from ours as night and day. What do you know of our system? Why are you talking about abandoning public education when you live in a country that is leading the U.S. in education precisely because your country actually finances its public education? Do you actually know what you're talking about?
Yes you have. You lost the argument. You made a proposition that is unfeasible, then answered any criticism of it with straw men and ad-hominems. The one example you brought up, China, actually goes against your argument because they are leading us in education and put more money into public education than we do. You have not stopped, or else you would currently be posting meaningless non-sequiturs after the argument has been lost and won.
Again, you have no argument. I'm not doing anything but addressing the flaws in your argument. If we're going in circles, it's because you're leading us that way. You have lost. If you really don't have anything else, then do yourself a favor and quit, for the sake of your own dignity.
You're the only one posting nonsense here. You really have no reason to be here. You lost the argument days ago, and are just spinning your wheels at this point.
When confronted with these facts, your response, again and again, has been to make straw-man arguments and non-sequiturs about "running in circles." You're the one who is running around in circles, going back to your glib, whimsically naive libertarian solution.
